As a barrel manufacturer. We have only had 1 person in over 30 years have a catastrophic failure. It was a similar issue to the your Slap round failure. Fella sent a couple of his reloads back with the barrel. Had over double the powder he was supposed to in the round. When it comes to shotgun loads... I wonder if it was an auto loader if it would have failed that much. If the gasses have a place to escape, it would probably not have "banana peeled" that barrel. Fortunately, we have heard from customers who have squib loaded and double shot without damage. But, the idea of people shooting with obstructions is always a fear of ours. Loved the video.
was about to comment about that, the gas system in a semiauto will allow for a lot of pressure to be compensated, that ar15 was just working "overgassed" while those pump actions were essentially pipebombs

Scott I have been running my Diamondback AR-15 for 3 years now with only one failure (due to ammo) and never really cleaned it. I have around 1700 rounds through it. They are built surprisingly well for the price point. One of the best budget friendly AR’s on the market in my opinion.

Forty some years ago I worked in a gun shop part time. A man brought in a single shot shotgun with the banana pealed barrel. His teen aged son said he wanted to see the leaves fly. We still talk about it to this day. Thanks for another fun video Scott.

I LOVED it! .... I thought the problem with the shootgun was the slug but I think it was the opposite of the AR which had pressure relief from the gas port to the reloading mechanism.
I love that his original plans went to waste almost immediately so he just started throwing everything he could find on the AR to get some content
This kind of real-world experiment is invaluable for understanding the limits and potential dangers we might face in the field.
A while back I've watched a Demo Ranch video in which Matt obstructs the barrel of a hi-point with increasingly crazy stuff (I believe he even welded it shut at some point). Seeing that shotgun explode from a dirt obstruction made the little hi-point even more impressive, holy crap.
Demo also did a similar video using a Mossberg Patriot. He really had to get overt to break it. I went and bought one. It's a nice rifle for the price.
The hi-point is one of those fascinating things that seems to exist just to defy physics.

It's because the AR has a gas system, which allows for back pressure to be released, granted it can still over pressure (obviously). It's was when you suppress a semi they tend to shoot gas into your face.
Yeah, shotgun barrels are not designed to handle pressure. Not surprised they fail with minimal obstruction.
@@gregorybower2759 it has nothing to do with the gas system. The amount of gas bled off is minimal, otherwise you would get no velocity out of semi autos. It has to do with the strength and material the barrel is made of. They are designed to handle high pressures. I guarantee you could repeat all these tests with a quality bolt action and get the same result.
@@joshuawebb2670 I also think the muzzle device or a ported barrel effects along with a smaller barrel makes it better as there is more chance to be gaps between the obstruction and less chance of more obstruction going inside the barrel when its simply smaller.

Wanna bet? Brother and I young and dumb tried to imitate Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd using a chicken wing. Well we triggered with a broom stick, but it still banana peel split the barrel. We used a pipe cutter and cut it off at the tube where the barrel screws on. Worked just fine after that. Good grouse hunting gun. @@tinyj4520

Scott, I had a customer who at the range, decided to laser bore sight his 300 mag rifle. When done adjusting the scope he forgot to remove the bore sighter before firing. The barrel banana peeled.😮

Try a SLAP round and a barrel obstruction, but hide in an underground shelter to do the test.
12g is a low pressure cartridge, so the barrels don't have anywhere near as much pressure resistance as a high pressure 5.56 barrel.
Also, you should invest in some shields for your cameras. Even a simple polycarbonate will protect against shrapnel really well.

Thanks for showing me a new way to clean my firearms. I'm just going to start stuffing patches down to the chamber and letting one rip. What could get your firearm cleaner than a patch at thousands of FPS? Stuff like this is why you're my favorite firearms tip channel! Shotguns aren't built to withstand pressures anywhere near as high as most rifles, so it's no surprise that they don't handle barrel obstructions too well. I remember my grandfather showing me a photo once of a shotgun that came into his shop when he worked as a gunsmith in the 1960s. Its owner had stumbled over a fence while hunting and tentpoled his gun without, evidently, realizing it, and the next time he fired it the Damascus steel barrel just... _unwound._ Exactly what the guy thought Gramp, or any other gunsmith, could do about that is unclear, but it sure made for an impressive photograph.
Just had me after the Intro!🤣 But still very interesting video, i think its the bullet that makes the difference. Possibly the bullet drills through the obstructions, why the loose projectile from the shotgun and the pure energy search for an alternative way out?🤔😂🍻

Looks like a lot of the obstructions were actually in the AR15's muzzle break. I wonder if it would have gone differently if the muzzle brake was removed and the obstructions were in the actual barrel?
same.. i was wondering if the muzzle brake was acting as a vent, allowing the pressure to escape.. rather than creating its own vents :)
agreed definitely reduced over pressure by a significant margin. also is another advantage of havng a muzzle break that i had not previously considered.
I guess on the other hand, there's a lesson learned that an AR-15 with a muzzle break is unlikely to get a catastrophic barrel obstruction
Alot of the gas can also escape through the gas block further reducing pressure.
This is why they put standoff devices on the muzzles of breaching shotguns.
Sensing a missed opportunity here. You're running from zombies, trip, plug your shotgun barrel, get up and fire to dispatch the closest zombie. Will your now banana peeled shotgun still be effective against zombies??? Always wondered what would happen when another round follows a banana peeled barrel.
