This channel along with a few others inspired me to start blacksmithing. I got a 55 pound anvil, a few hammers, and a small coal forge. I made a keychain for my first project
Susan Barbier, Nice pick! Maggot is one of the most interesting characters in LOTR. He’s a little like a grounded mortal Bombadil. And Frodo’s “and I’ve missed a good friend,” lamenting how long he let his fear of Maggot and his dogs keep him from knowing this important person, is a lovely moment. Thanks for the reminder!
Hi,I live in Glasgow,Scotland, and I watch your videos a lot,I’ve learned so much from yourself that I would just like to take a minute to say thank you, thank you so much for taking the time to film these really helpful and informative videos, they are actually life changing for me,the knowledge and skills I have learned from your videos is amazing, please keep up the good work, so many of us really appreciate it,I am an amateur at diy and I have an interest in metal and wood work,I now know a lot more from watching your videos every day, keep up the good work, you make the world a better place for us all,
Amazing job. I'm entertaining the idea of purchasing Swords for my groomsmen, but having watched your video, I may develop the confidence to make them.
started watching your videos when i go tinto carpentry, and then watched alot of your chainsaw and logger videos too being alogger myself.now im into blacksmithing and what do ya know so are you! love the content man, thanks for sharing
B-e-a-utiful looking piece. I'm overjoyed to see blacksmithing content being posted again, as it's what drew me to your channel to begin with. I do enjoy all of your content, though blacksmithing is my favorite!
His wisdom from a man like you is better than a young man who is very reckless and does not know how to think at a very high level. This video is what made me understand how to make a sword.
Hats off to you for all the LOTR references. That’s what I will aspire to be when I begin my journey into the smithing world; a fine balance between craftsmanship and nerdy.
I just wanted to let you know that in preference to the daily news I watch your videos every morning at the start of the day. The news and world events were just bringing me down so as a company director and ex electronics engineer with a huge interest in woodwork and metal work I know find myself with an arc welder, an anvil, a revamped home workshop and I’m using my circular saw in ways I hadn’t thought of. What next - a sword possibly ? Best wishes from the U.K.
Dabbled a bit the last few years with small knives. Between the south Texas heat & humidity, it's become somewhat of a winter sport. Love the video and hope to put it to some use once temperatures drop below 90!
This was really interesting. I'm a big sword nut, and I still learned a few words about parts of the sword from this. It's gonna be cool to see when this one is all finished.
Glad I found you, this is something I'd love to try someday. Meat cutter hear before I lost my leg a couple years ago. Might just have to get myself a forge someday
I've seen you use the oxy-acetylene torch in quite a few videos but you've never really talked about it that I know of. Would make an interesting video topic!
I saw a Hay Budden anvil advertised in the classifieds or craigslist recently, immediately thought of you, and regretted not having the money or space for it for future projects.
I know In the south east a short machete(24") or ww1 or ww2 soligen steel 20" knife is essential gear for backwoods canoe trips or setting hooks from the banks in the swamps or running property lines. A sword in that style would be very practical but you gotta have a way to wear it so you can carry other gear.
great video. I know very little about metal working so I always learn something new. However, when you were hammering the blade, it didn't look you were wearing hearing protection, unless I just couldn't see it. Is there a reason for that?
...working on the geometry of the blade...For every teen who has asked, What will I ever use this for? Carry on with the Elvish-ness of the wonder of community life. How magical and full of wonder. You are inviting that into all of our lives. Thank you, Scott, thank you EC team. We can use a little of the magical here on Brumbach Road.
Well if you like the wordsmith how about ..... All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
The only thing that would make this video better would be if you had somebody like me who's never done it doing one simultaneously - the comedy value of comparison would be off the charts. Sometimes we get so accustomed to the talents and abilities of professionals that we forget just how impressive their work is. I've said the same thing about the Olympics. Just have one or two normal people trying to compete. Would be hilarious. Needless to say, good job. I do have some sword envy. I carry a soil knife and pruners on my hip (and a Benchmade knife in my pocket) and get comments - can only imagine if I had a full-blown sword. lol
I'm a kid and when I grow up I want to make the most powerful sword, shield and armor that can survive grenades and diamonds. And the sword has blue fire on it and it never runs out .
Is that a leaf-blade? You're a man of many talents. It looks like it'd be a really solid cutter for its size. I wish you could one day collaborate with weaponsmith Tod Cutler. He's on the other side of the pond but I think you two would get along well. I don't think I'll ever blacksmith, but I want to improve my English speaking ability by using precise language like you do! By the way is that an older GE microwave I see? I think my parents have had a model similar to that for 23 years. Still going strong! Have a blessed day.
I feel like when you said you were normalizing the blade you were actually annealing it. From what I have been told the main difference is that normalizing allows for cooling in still air, which would not take nearly as long as cooling when left in a forge. Either way both do a good job preparing the steel for hardening so its more semantics at this point.
I was expecting to see "Part One" include the making of the Damascus Billet. Doing a search I see one can buy various sizes of billets already made. Scott, I was wondering where you procured yours? THanks in advance.

What other channels do you recommend on the subject?
Inspired me also, just getting started. Christ Center Ironworks is a good channel as well as Black Bear Forge.

I'm soooo grateful for these videos!! Very useful in research for my blacksmith character in the book I'm writing
Under the spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands
The smith a mighty man is he
His arms like iron bands.
Thanks for the explanation on pre-heating the oil. I always wondered how pre-heating helped it cool faster, but couldn't find much googling.

I absolutely love your voiceover. It makes you sound particularly wise and the slight rumble is very comforting. Love the blade too!
This video combines two of my favorite passions- blacksmithing, and anything Essential Craftsman! 😁

Such a beautiful blade already; I can't wait to see the final product! Some young lady is going to be super happy.

Who knew Scott was a Tolkien fan! Great video, the elvish weapon smiths of Gondolin would be proud.
When making a leaf shaped blade, be kind to your scabbard maker: Make the ricasso as wide as the widest part of the blade.
