  • Defensive highlights of the shoulder roll at its best!
    Floyd Mayweather Jr - Is an American retired professional boxer. Undefeated as a professional and a five-division world champion, Mayweather won twelve world titles and the lineal championship in four different weight classes (twice in the welterweight division). He is a two-time winner of the Ring magazine Fighter of the Year award (1998 and 2007.)
    James Toney - Is an American professional boxer. He is a former three-weight world champion, having held the IBF middleweight, super middleweight and cruiserweight titles, as well as having challenged for the WBA and WBC heavyweight titles. Toney was voted by both The Ring magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America as their "Fighter of the Year" in 1991 and 2003.
    Nicolino Locche - Was an Argentine boxer from Tunuyán, Mendoza. Locche is often cited as one of the finest defensive boxers of all time, second only to Young Griffo.
    Pernell Whitaker - Is an American former professional boxer and current boxing trainer. He won a silver medal as a lightweight at the 1982 Amateur World Championships, followed by gold at the 1983 Pan American Games and 1984 Olympics. In his professional career, Whitaker won world titles in four different weight divisions.
    George Benton - Was a boxer and a boxing trainer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For seventeen years, Benton worked with Lou Duva and the Duva family's promotion company, Main Events, as the head trainer for many of their fighters. Among the fighters he trained were Evander Holyfield, Mike McCallum, Meldrick Taylor, and Pernell Whitaker.

    Toney had the best shoulder roll imo,,the point of it was offence and defence, he'd roll the shot and alway fire back, the others countered of it far less, not the best defence overall as Floyd and Pea would use there legs more, but purely the shoulder roll, James did it best

    Can the shoulder roll be used by someone with a short reach? I'm new to boxing and I love the style, but I'm 5'11 and have a 70 inch reach. Me and my coaches have been practicing it a ton recently and I'm most comfortable with it although I'll admit I haven't faced many good boxers, mostly just guys who are relatively new to the sport like me.
    I know intelligence and reactions are the most important traits to use the shoulder roll defense, but can someone with a short reach use it effectively? Any response would be helpful.

    • @flameo1000
      @flameo1000 7 лет назад +5

      Yes you can use it have a very short reach and height too am only 5'5. But I don't use it as a main defense but rather a tool to counter with my right hand. So I keep my hands up normal guard but use it to roll the right hand once it comes.

    • @skipeveryday7282
      @skipeveryday7282 8 лет назад +2

      Every guard has its strengths and weaknesses. One approach to overcoming the shoulder roll defense is to step to your right (their left) forcing them to bring their lead hand up as the angle no longer allows their shoulder to protect their face/head. But to be quite honest the shoulder roll defense is one of the best and most difficult to penetrative, but it's also quite difficult to do and requires the right proportions.
