- Salvador Sánchez was a Mexican boxer born in the town of Santiago Tianguistenco, Estado de México. Sanchez was the WBC and lineal featherweight champion from 1980 to 1982. Many of his contemporaries as well as boxing writers believe that had it not been for his premature death, Sánchez could have gone on to become the greatest boxer of all time. Sánchez died on August 12, 1982 in a car accident from Querétaro to San Luis Potosí.
In 1991, Sánchez was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The Ring magazine named both him, and Sugar Ray Leonard, as Fighter of the Year in 1981. In 2002, he was named the 24th greatest fighter of the past 80 years by The Ring magazine. In 2003, The Ring rated Sánchez number 88 on the list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. Sánchez was voted as the #3 featherweight of the 20th century by the Associated Press.
One of my favorite boxers. I was a senior in high school when he passed away. I think he was the best! You don't know boxing if you don't know Salvador.

Yup I learned about salvador sanchez from my barber paul 1 day I saw a signed autograph poster he had and i said "hey Paul who the curly haired boxer ?" And he told me the story of salvador sanchez and how he died at 23 . He meet him back stage going back to his locker room and he got his autograph and I was like "WOW " that was cool 😎!

My late bother Johnny Flores RIP got to train with Salvador's trainer when my brother graduated from Waukegan Est high school at the age of 18 my brother got the chance to fight armature in Mexico and posted a 3 - 0 - 1 record. My brother ended up staying with Sanchez in his home while he was in Mexico but tragically when Salvador passed away my brother no longer wanted to fight. Salvador was ONE the greatest fighters to ever live and he was only 23 and just imagine if he was still alive how many more championships he would have won!!!

couldn't have said it better myself. When he was in his 15th round, he was still fighting like it was his 1st.
@@solidevil2639 One of his nicknames was "Mr. Pulmones"....Mr. Lungs, because of his excellent conditioning. If you watch the Gomez fight, i think it was in between the 7th and 8th rounds...his cornermen leave him sitting on his stool for around 20 seconds before the next round started. No water, no pulling down if his trunks, no ice nothing. He just sat there as if he was poolside while the other corner worked feverishly to revive Wilfredo.

The Goat in my humble opinion. Did not have the longest record but he had everything else. Chava possessed the heart, the intellect, the stamina, the chin, and the ability to adapt mid fight. Boxing's chapter on Salvador Sanchez was concluded way too soon. RIP to one of the best of all time.
