Many people complaint about morning stiffness, back pain, neck pain, headache and stress. they don't feel fresh through out the day. The reason for all this is incorrect way of getting up from bed after sleep of 6 to 8 hours. All muscles and joints are at rest during sleep, they need warm up before getting up. Some people have habit of getting up in jerky way from bed. We should prepare our muscles to bear weight in start of morning.
Dr. Varun Wasil (PT) presents some tips and correct way of getting up. He named WAKE UP WARM UP tips. This includes 5 minutes warm up from head to toe. This helps us to improve blood flow to muscles and prepare all joints to carry weight. This also helps strengthening of spine muscles to avoid back problems.
STEPS TO FOLLOW:
1. Chin tuck and pillow press- to strengthen neck muscles and avoid headaches.
2. Shoulder press on bed- to strengthen muscles of upper back
3. knee to chest stretch- to stretch gluteal muscles, hamstring and lower back.
4. hip and knee flexion- to make knee and hip flexible by free movements.
5. Ankle pump exercise- warm up of dorsiflexors and plantar flexors.
6. Toe curls- to strengthen sole muscles and arch of foot. useful for heel pain also.
7. After warm up. turn yourself to one side and wait for 30 seconds and then lift up yourself by applying weight on both hands. legs out of bed and lift you up.
This 5 minutes spending on bed before getting up can avoid many spine related problems.
