Remember like my pipe mentor said when I started pipe smoking in 1979 “it’s not the pipe or tobacco it’s you!” I’ve never forgotten that and did a video on it.
Smoking a cigar fast will not give tongue bite but you will lose all the flavor in the cigar that way. I smokke cigars as slow as possible to get the most flavor just like a pipe. Great video!
I've just started in the "pipe world". I have been binge watching your videos. Thank you for making them and helping out the newbies like me. There's so much information out there, and so many peoples opinions differ. It can be hard to distinguish it all.
Thank you for your comment. My advice is to simplify it. What you need is a decent Briar pipe or Filter enabled corn cob preferably with a filter 6mm or 9mm to eliminate any possible tongue bite. Add to the pipe a set of pipe tools & pipe cleaners. Then choose 3 blends. English. Peterson early morning pipe. Virginia. Orlik golden slice. Aromatic. Gawith Hoggarth Ennerdale. So you would find out which type of blend suites your palate best. Smoke it slow & tap down as you go along & enjoy the flavours. That’s about it😊 Soon enough you will learn the rest
Thanks for a other informative video. I differ on one aspect. Even though I smoke with filters, I encourage new pipe smokers to first try standard non filtered pipes and even if they get a bit of tongue bite to persevere with checking humidity, cadence, packing method etc etc before moving to filters. Ultimately non filtered pipes will give you a better experience and access to a much broader range of pipes. If however you can’t cope with tongue bite despite your best efforts then definitely go to 9mm filtered pipes and that will change your smoking experience completely, as it did mine. All the best
Thank you Simon for sharing your experience and sound advice. I agree filters are there if you need them but if one can prepare the pipe & tobacco the right way and smoke it slow, tongue bite would not be an issue to most, or the very least will not be a factor that will spoil the enjoyment.
Another great video Nathan. It is a really important topic. And thank you for the mouthwash info. Would you do a video showing off all of your pipes? I would love to see your entire pipe collection. God bless you. Have a great weekend. John.
Thanks Nathan for today's subject of TB that can hit anyone if smoked fast. I find warm milk is good to relieve any burning symptoms. but the best advise is to smoke slow and not to allow the bowl to over heat. You covered the subject well 👍 Btw loving the C&D Anthology it is really good. Enjoy your weekend
Thanks Gary for the warm milk tip that is interesting it might have something to do with neutralising alkaline. The smoking slow is certainly good advice. Enjoy the anthology2023😊 nice weekend to you too
Great vid! For all who suffer TB temporary relief can be found with Bioténe Mouthwash as well. The relief is almost within minutes, hours at worst. And for me im always reminded you smoke cigarettes but you enjoy a cigar and you alwats sip a pipe as if you had poured a dram of the most expensive cognac. I learned the hard way and suffered until given this remedy. Smooth sailing ever since! 🙂👍
Thank you ! I'm a new pipe smoker , and have been suffering from tongue bite . It's been pretty awful ! I've been smoking corn cobs with filter removed . I'll put it back in and slow down ! Thank you so much !
Thank you Reggie for sharing your experience. Yes tongue bite is real turnoff so find the right way to smoke a pipe is very important. For some filters is only way forward especially on a shortish stem of a corn cub. So filter and smoking slow and not allowing the bowl to overheat is your answer. Enjoy your pipe smoking
Well done Nathan for another important subject that you addressed perfectly. I sometimes feel the heat especially on some of Mac Baren blends that i found that using a charcoal filter and by sipping the smoke & drinking coffee while smoking those blends that i enjoy helps to eliminate any harshness. As you rightly say Meerschaum & churchwarden pipes also cool the smoke. Nathan what is that short Savinelli you showed briefly it is a gorgeous pipe
When I was a new pipe smoker I often got tongue bite. The best remedy I found then was baking soda (natrium/sodium bicarbonate) gently rubbed on the tongue 👅 greatly reduces tongue bite. I leave the soda on the tongue for a few seconds spit the excess. I still use this method even now, even tho I don’t have tongue bite any more, the alkalinity of the bicarbonate neutralizes the acidity of tobacco smoke.
@@spleenforsoulAfter finishing the bowl, but only IF I feel like I got bitten. This happens less and less over time as one figures out cadence, moisture levels, types of favored Ts.
Thanks for your tip on the Peterson P lip that is designed for the smoke to enter in a angle avoiding direct contact with the tongue. Yes I should have mentioned that option. Good you reminded me👍
@@TheVapingPiper system pipes are fantastic, they have a chamber at the bottom of the shank where moisture can collect without going down the stem and into your mouth. The smoke is always dry as a result. Check out a photo online of one that’s cut in half. They’re brilliant
For tongue bite also, cut a nice thick slice of cucumber and hold in your mouth for a bit. That helps me. Good advice Nathan its good to see you my friend
Thanks Craig. That is the Savinelli clark’s favourite. You can watch my review on this pipe. Link here, ruclips.net/video/w5Zt8omvZHg/видео.htmlsi=umK8rtjMa73NHd1Z
I love the vaper Fillmore and started smoking it with a 6mm filter. At first the reduced draw annoyed me but I got used to it after awhile and now I rather like it as it also slows my cadence. Thanks for another great video! Also, I only ever use a 6mm filter once. 9mm filter I can can two smokes out of it if I take the filter out of the pipe and allow it to dry out for a day or so.
Good Evening 😊 Awesome Video👌🏽 Thanks for sharing the tips in how to prevent Tongue Bite 👏🏼 I suck on a candy 🍬 to help me 😂 Have a fabulous weekend & Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
Thanks Yusuf for the candy tip👍 btw I like your new LCS pipe😊 it looks amazing with the rustic charcoal look and well matched stem also the rim and ring is a nice contrast. Enjoy it in good health.
Hi Nathan, do you recommend a pipe shape that best brings out the taste of a Virginia based blend ? I’m looking at dedicating a pipe to enjoy these tasty blends. Thank you in advance 🙏🏼
Hi Kurt. As Virginia leaf contains higher sugar it burns hot so if you are sensitive to tongue bite I recommend a longer stemmed shaped pipe like a lovat or a churchwarden or any shaped pipe you like but with a 6mm or 9mm filter. It goes without saying to smoke it slow & steady to fully enjoy the sweetness & fruitiness of the Virginia.
Thanks. Yes they do as they have a condensation collecting chamber below the bowl, in addition the P lip design stem direct the smoke towards the top of the mouth instead of the tongue. The only downside is the extra cleaning involved and the somewhat awkward positioning of your tongue while smoking with a P lip button, it takes getting used to. So it is good solution for tongue bite for some. Apparently either you love it or hate it😊
I have read a lot on the Peterson system pipes , can't wait to try one, do you think its a better solution for the tongue bite than just using a normal pipe with a filter? is it ok to use the Peterson system pipes with a filter too ? @@TheVapingPiper
Yes it is Roy as it was designed with tongue bite in mind. As I don’t have one I am not sure if they come filter enabled but if they do that is a double solution but I suspect they don’t have a filter option as the whole design is filtered really. (I vaguely remember they have a army mounted stem design non-filtered) Those who smoke this Peterson system pipes apparently love it. Btw on smoking pipes website they have a detailed write up about Peterson system pipes. Check it out very interesting reading.
The whole “long stem cools the smoke” is bupkiss! That’s like saying a longer barrel gun will slow down a bullet. Or am I krazy? Either way I love your channel. Just disagreeing in a respectable way. ❤️
Loved the Bupkiss phrase😀 Long stem does indeed soften the acidity of the smoke and in some way cools the smoke enough to reduce tongue bite. That is why churchwarden pipes are so popular. The concept of a long stem originated from Middle Eastern shisha style smoking.
