      Yes! I listened to a pipe channel by a pipe maker. He commented that modern pipe smokers are much fussier about their techniques and critical of those of others. Pipe smokers of old didn't worry so much about the best way to do this or that. They just smoked them and figured out what worked for them.

    I had no one to tell me how to do this but it worked out OK. From being a kid I wanted to smoke a pipe and finally in 1957, at age of 16, I went to a tobacconist and pretended it was a present for my uncle. As a pretended afterthought I asked for an ounce of tobacco, though was flummoxed when he said "What brand does your uncle smoke?" I picked one out at random saying "I think it's that one". Then I went to a small corner shop to buy matches and finally to the cinema to fill and light it - I kept it going for the full 90 minutes of the film... a WWII epic with bearded naval officers some of whom smoked pipes as they planned their strategy. Altogether a great experience

      very nice. the first few times i smoked a pipe i had bad sickness not even finishing the thing. eating well, drinking soda or juice, eating sugary things, none of that helped with nicotine sickness. i’m just sensitive it seems. and people have a similar experience smoking cigars. surprising to see you say you smoked 90 minutes and not mentioning any mishaps in experience. lucky!

  • @Llyrin
    @Llyrin 8 месяцев назад +14

    Proper pipe ashtrays have a cork knocker for tapping your pipe. The cork will not damage your pipe.
    Another don’t is do not puff too quickly on your pipe. The bowl will get too hot to touch.
    I recommend Peterson pipes of Dublin and Savinelli pipes of Italy. Dr. Grabow pipes are very good too. My first pipe was a Grabow and it lasted me 20 years. It would have been longer, if i had been more careful. The bowl slipped off the stem and cracked the shank. 🙁

    • @ateam137
      @ateam137 7 месяцев назад +4

      One of the ways that you can counter the bowl getting too hot for the touch when you're wanting to puff quickly is to breathe the smoke in through your mouth and hold the smoke in your mouth while breathing out of your nose. This will cause an airflow back through the stem and out of the bowl, which in turn, doesn't trap as much heat (you'll notice smoke coming out of the bowl). Obviously, only do this for as long as you want/can while holding the smoke in your mouth. ;) It'll cause a nice big puff of smoke when decide to finally exhale from your mouth.

    Bought my first pipe-a Doc Grabow-in 1963 at Chanute AFB, Illinois. I was schooled by two different pipe veterans over the years, and I definitely believe that a pipe MUST be broken in (seasoned). If not done so properly, you’re going to have a taste to your pipe reminiscent of a recently burnt out building.
    That’s why you need to build up a ‘cake’ of smoked tobacco inside the bowl, and you don’t accomplish that by just “smoking” the pipe without first gradually breaking the pipe in.

  • @vjm3
    @vjm3 3 дня назад

    Somewhat related to ghosting: I've heard people suggest you let any pipe sit on a stand for three days. Why? Because if it's wood (aka not Meerschaum), it'll get moist from smoking. And if you don't let it dry out over three or so days, the wood will remain wet, then cause it to rot. The nice thing about Meerschaum is it doesn't have that problem. Problem is, it's super fragile. Dropping it once will cause it to break 80% of the time.
    Also, I didn't know about the "don't take apart a pipe when it's warm" statement. I've been smoking, letting it sit for a few minutes, then picking it up I'd take apart, and pipe clean both pipe and stem. Haven't seen any issues, but really I don't let my pipe get super hot in the first place.
    Finally, I use a cork nub to "knock" the ash out gently. I think from now on I'll scoop it out like he suggests, then do a few knocks to get anything else out.
    Thank you.

    When I first started smoking a pipe years ago, I worked with an old pipe smoker, he showed me how to clean, light, smoke it etc, he used to rotate his pipes, also if you buy a new one, half fill it, until it's broke in, I have heard of older pipe smokers, soaking pipes before using them, a new one will never taste right until broke in, don't get it too hot either

    It's a big part of my job not only to make smoking mistakes clear, but also to create new pipe smokers. there is a need for solidarity among smokers, while currently there is a lot of envy in appearance.... in my opinion more and more smokers smoke a pipe and not tobacco...

    Possibly too late , but I’ve a question on pipe smoking and health.
    My wife and perhaps family are against smoking. Now I’ve lit up a few times a year if only to enliven some memories of my grandfather. I do enjoy it but it’s probably not worth the fight to do regularly as the big C word would be thrown at me . I am also of the larger stature , so I get it from that end as well.
    Aside from my grandfather I’ve only ever met another and he was probably a chain smoker and probably not the best example as he said he was dying and his teeth were stained black but he still lived his piping .
    Can it be done, smoking in a healthy way ?
    Thanks

      Healthy, no, it's just like drinking in moderation chances is not as high, but there's always a chance, even non-smokers, but by keeping good oral health like flossing good tootbrushing the chances are very low
      Avoid touge bite, and by having a healthy weight and diet, you can also reduce risks
      A youtuber clif Higgins, his youtube name is pipeninja, which has a video on risks. I recommend watching it. he's a dentist, so he knows what he's talking about
      Also, don't inhale the smoke

      It’s like anything else in life, moderation is key. First of all you’ve stated your a bigger man, you should fix that. The best thing you can do to try and prevent any issues is get your weight , nutrition, and fitness on point.
      Secondly, I wouldn’t recommend smoking every day. Make it a treat just like an alcoholic drink. 1-2x a week at max.

      Cigs are bad bc the additives.
      Vape is bad bc of the synthetics.
      Pipes are good (if you use quality tobacco).
      Stress is the worst for you, pipe smoking reduces stress more than any trace negative effects from the tobacco.
      Tobacco is neuropreservative that is medicinal.
      The war on tobacco is an experiment in medical tyranny.

    Mistakes I made when new. Lighting it too harshly, not getting it toasted and lit evenly. Packing way too tightly. My fav. method is 3 layer pack. Light fill, light press, add again, press, add again press. Taking time to get it evenly packed with gentle little presses. Getting familiar with handling and packing the way that you prefer is most important. I will say that if you dont smoke your pipe all the way down to the bottom for the first few weeks of smoking youll get an odd shaped cake that is thick at the top and thin at the bottom. I'd rec. only loading half a bowl if youre unable to finish the entire bowl. You save on tobacco waste and your cake will be more like a bowl shape, instead of a jug (with a narrower neck). trimming the cake back at least, if youre the type that only likes the taste of the first half. Personally I dont enjoy my bowl nearly as much at the beginning as I do towards the end. Dude on the right had a cool pipe lol.

    Yes you can talk and pipe...Mark Twain did it and got paid to do so :) IMO the Deer Tongue blends are so wimpy and they really skimp on it...Cornel and Diehl need to put more in the blends they say they have, its just malarkey.
    Frequently smoked pipes ought to be cleaned behind the tenon area that holds lots of goop and often times it builds up enough to cause pressure to cause the shank to crank.

    Things those gentlemen fail to mention: If you plan on smoking more than A pipe, have more than one pipe with you. You need to let it rest, so switching between pipes is a good choice.
    Also, never ever scrape that coal residue you get on the inside of the pipe completely. Scrape the excess that builds and then you always leave some, this helps with many things, from the quality of the smoke you have to maintaining your pipe.
