I'm a pretty new pipe smoker, maybe three to five months, can't remember exactly. At first I was having some trouble getting good flavor. There was a chain of events that was causing me problems. I was having problems keeping my tobacco lit. I would then hit it pretty hard with the flame thinking maybe it would stay lit. Sometimes this worked but I was scorching the tobacco and the taste suffered. I made three adjustments. First my tobacco was a little too moist so I let it dry out some before smoking. Second, I experimented with how tightly I packed my pipe. And the last improvement I made was to try and light the tobacco with as little contact between the tobacco and flame as possible and creating a little disk of burning embers to burn down through the fresh tobacco.
Years ago, my first bowlfull of pipe tobacco left me with an ashy taste in my mouth the next morning, so I walked away from it. This video makes sense and gives me the incentive to try again, at age 70 no less! Thank you! 😊
AWESOME!!! THANKS!! . That helps a bunch! Off topic I just herd the 85 year old gentleman next door at one time won a pipe smoking competition at one point in his life. In the past I’ve shared the love of Christ to him and he was receptive. Now I’m going to ask him to reciprocate and show me how to load my pipe !! Thanks for the tips. That really helps.
I’ve only been smoking for a few months now. However, the sipping method has really been beneficial with taste and ashy aftertaste for me. I read somewhere to sip it like you’re sipping hot chocolate. Since then, my tobacco has been so much more enjoyable. Cheers fellow pipers
Glad you mentioned not smoking to the very bottom of the bowl. Both Uhle's and JM Boswell suggest this, not to sell more tobacco but to get a much better smoking experience. But, for me, the best way not to get an ashy taste is...don't smoke ash. I learned many years ago to do "the dump". When about 2/3 into your smoke, fluff the ash and dump it, tamp, relight. How many times I've read of smokers mentioning an ashy taste, don't smoke ash.
Incredible tips! I'm now on my second year of pipe smoking mastering the craft and i must say i have adjusted quite well, also on the topic of smoking your pipe all the way down the only time i would recommend it is when you are on the process of breaking in a new pipe, you may have a reduced experience but it helps alot on building that cake on the bottom of the pipe (the most important imo) much faster! Otherwise with a seasoned pipe i tend to stop smoking when i sense that i taste more ash than the blend im smoking.
Fantastic video, I'm glad In my pipe journey I have managed to figure this all out by myself over the past 6 months... On a side note, Im loving my Chelsea morning, great recommendation on your part. For some reason when I smoke it, it reminds me of spending pennies in a bakery when I was young. Hope you and your family are doing well and staying cool in this hot summer, best wishes from Japan
Thank you for answering pipe smokers' questions. Your advice is to smoke to the last 1/8 bowl works. Although I started with cheap cobs my advice today for tongue bite is to start with the Carey magic inch pipe. The filter/carburetor system almost makes it impossible for tongue bite.
Thank you for the Q@A video I've been wondering about some of the questions here. How far down the bowl should you smoke your pipe, was a question I've always wanted to ask. Some videos state to smoke the tobacco all the way down when breaking in a new pipe but don't continue to say after the breaking you will know when to stop and empty your bowl. Now As walking drool bucket I some time get a wet bowl ,I have 2 Petersons but I don't think they have the Peterson system on them. I don't like handling used filters so I don't use them. Both pipes are bent billiards I thought maybe in part some or the reason. I ordered a Savinelli Roma 320 KS and lookin forward to that. I'm a new " Piper at the gates of dawn" but watching videos on how to break in a new pipe what type of pipes there are and tobacco reviews like your own have made smooth going in my pipe smoking journey, Thanks ......
I tried a couple cigars this month, having never so much as smoked a cigarette... I had this exact issue. It tasted absolutely horrid. It was like I had grabbed a handful of ashes from an ashtray and chewed them. The next day I was convinced I had ruined my taste buds for good. So now I'm looking to try a pipe, but I'd like to ask a question.. do you really learn to "do it right" and learn to discern flavors or do you just kill off the taste buds? I'd love to learn the craft and be able to enjoy a pipe to unwind every now and again but not at the expense of changing how my food tastes. I appreciate any advice! Love your channel!
Ive been smoking pipes for like 9 years. Mostly a cigar smoker though. But about 2 weeks ago i was getting beautiful flavors out of Dan tobaccos old ironsides and then all of a sudden this past week i cannot taste anything at all. Then packed some GL Pease westminster and again no flavor, then packed some samuel gawith squadron leader in a different pipe and then tried it with a filter and again zero flavor. But i can still taste food and cigars. I am completely confused and scared the flavor wont come back as ive just ordered $100 worth of tobacco. I am an English/Balkan lover and need that flavor in my life. Not sure whats going on or what to do.
Thank you for the insight that it is best to not smoke the whole bowl I think my tobacco will taste better and my pipe last longer if I heed your advice
Great vid! I've only been smoking a pipe for about a month and that was my first big mistake, well second after not knowing how to pack a pipe but I smoked that bad boy all the way down and was thinking, this tastes bad. Then thinking about my cigar smoking, you don't smoke them all the way down to the foot. The closer you get, the hotter it is which ruins the taste of the tobacco. Duh! My second bowl I had a much better experience, apart from still not knowing how to pack a pipe but it tasted much better. I thought I did my due diligence with researching how to smoke a pipe but none ever covered how long to smoke it. If you don't learn from your mistakes, you'll be destined to repeat them. Thanks much!
Thank you for this video! My first smoked bowl was pretty good. My 2nd, not so much. It mostly tasted like an ash tray. It sounds like that was due to my bowl grind too hot, and tried to smoke the whole thing because I was understanding that I needed to coat the bowl with carbon. So I ended up drawing ash and I couldn’t get that taste out of my mouth for 24 hours. YUK! How do I know when to stop? Hard to gauge how thick my ash bed is and how much unburnt tobacco lies underneath. I’m kind of OCD when it comes to waste, so I’m wanting to utilize as much as I cancan.
Glad you're having some success. Two notes on how far to smoke: 1) With time, you'll learn when you're near the end of the bowl. 2) Don't try to smoke to the bottom, you aren't wasting that much tobacco tbh anyway.
Hi , thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with all these wonderful videos. I have a question I’m getting ready to purchase my first briar after smoking cobs for a while, I know I’m sticking with it for the long run. The smaller/mustache warmer type of pipes have really caught my eye because I have small hands and just like more petite things it’s part of my personality. Are these pipes bad for beginners ? Would you steer me away from that kind of purchase for a first briar or will I be fine? My biggest concern is they look like they will be easier to ruin with beginner mistakes. Thanks !
Thanks Robby. The only negative aspect I could comment on is that shorter pipes naturally have less time to cool the smoke. It's not significant but it is worth noting. Other than that, I can't think of a reason why it would be a bad decision.
Great video…very much appreciate your channel…do have a question…I don’t have a problem with tongue bite anymore and I have a good experience with several aromatics like hobbits weed, second breakfast, and Petersons Sweet Killarney. However when it comes to English and burley blends I feel like I don’t really taste anything…could it be just my sense of taste or something else….I live out in the middle of no where Nebraska and there’s not a lot of resources out here to get information let alone even Tobacco or pipes so I’m just figuring things out online…I’d appreciate any help
Hi Wilson. How important is it to how multiple pipes to smoke out of? I only have one and can't get more right now. Is there any harm in smoking out of it maybe every other day?
It's certainly not absolutely necessary but you'll likely find a decrease in smoking quality. Pipes smoke better when they receive rest and regular cleaning. I smoked the pipe for months without having another and it was fine. Again, the quality did drop but it held up.
I like longer stem pipes... they seem to smoke cooler.. Filters help..... Last.... tobaccos with cigar tobacco tend to leave an after taste! Just my humble opinion....
Nice observarions but I disagree, you should smoke the full bowl and leave only ashes, if you smoke right that builds the cake at the bottom that prevents damage and humidity. I would say thing Number one is clean your pipe after cool down each smoke and let it rest, smoke slowly, is that simple.
My my babe please good but it's like it's burning something can you help me it's like a nasty taste why I've been doing it right and I'm still like burning but it's not doing anything you know it taste like a bunch I got one without no need anything and it tastes bad right now it was good at first it going to go bad what you do about that Ricky is not the main Ricky I don't got no no wooden no no thing no nobody listening

I use keystones or dexcool crystals for the bottom. Grabs moisture and keeps ash out of the draw hole. But going slow is the main thing.

How then do you build a cake all the way down?
@@jackwarreniii the cake will build as low as it needs to

Good advice. Cadence fixes a lot of pipe issues.

As you get down to the bottom of the bowel, what about stirring and dumping the ash?
You talk about sipping a pipe . I am not sure what that means could you elaborate?

When you’re near the bottom of the bowl and it goes out, is that a good time to call it, instead of trying a last relight? Or is even that too late?
I usually call it good. With time, you get a good idea of where that line is, which will likely differ some for each individual.

It could be your personal taste. Maybe try a Va/But like Peterson University Flake or Stonehenge Flake (which has Perique as well).

I have a question so are there certain pipes that are better with aromatics and others that are better with non-aromatic tobacco and if so which pipes
Not so much with aromatics. Virginia blends and English blends? Sure. But with aromatics, if there is a distinction, it is quite minimal
Smoking pipes with a filter has avoided that for me. Filter stops the ash coming to your mouth. I am a filter guy. Maybe most folks are not?
That’s what I do to myself too often. I will want to keep smoking those last few minutes and wind up bringing ash taste into my mouth. 😊
Same here, even though I know better!

Sounds like his pipe was not properly broken-in.
You want to cook the tobacco, not burn it. Too much heat = bad. The cooler you can get it the better.
