Bought my first pipe and pipe tobacco 2 nights ago. Watched a few videos and settled down last night in the backyard, with a pipe packed with Consummate Gentleman, the tobacco i chose solely on name alone lol. Let me tell you, having never smoked a proper tobacco pipe in my life, i was in heaven. It reminded me of the old wood burning stove from my late aunts house in upstate NY. Nostalgic, relaxing, i cant believe i waited this long to enjoy this hobby. Will keep watching you videos brother. Cheers.

Just bought a tin. I generally prefer an English, but a friend recommended it. I would classify it as a "heavy" Virginian if that makes sense. It's not my favorite, but I wouldn't mind a bowl every now and then.

Wow i have the same zippo down to the design on the case, i came here thinking I'd be told there were better ways. Imagine my shock when i found out the good ol zippo wins again.

Great Review. I always like when I hear comparisons. My tops: Creme Brulee, Rum&Maple for the maple flavor, Spiced Rum, I will try Black Cordial and Vanilla Custard because of this great Sutliff review. Do Lane Next.

Great review-been mixing Lane 1-Q with Crème Brûlée. I make my own blends with five (5) different tobaccos from three (3) different companies.

I have a reusable match which is really cool.

I was really surprised to see 507C Virginia Slices absent from the group, since to me that's Sutliff's very best bulk blend! I'm not too much of sugary aromatic smoker these days, I mostly prefer pure Virginia flakes and high octane Dark Fired Kentucky blends, but Sutliff Vanilla Custard was one of my very first pipe tobaccos and I remember liking it a lot back then. Black Cordial sounds interesting too, and I can't help but wonder if it's at all similar to Cult Blood Red Moon since that is one aromatic I still really enjoy from time to time.

That's actually a cool way to do a review of multiple blends. I'd encourage you to do this with English, VaPers, and Burley blends! 😀

New pipe smoker here! I have the Sutliff J4 and the Vanilla Custard and I have throughly enjoyed both. However, I did have to dry both of these blends out when I received them. No sure if thats common or not

Greetings: I have noticed they now have blends, descriptions as colours and not flavours. Is this a millennial thing or have I missed something? I know my blends however my base price has increased nearly 100 /cent the last few years. Now it is more than local figuring in shipping. That said I seek other online suppliers. The few I found have other brands with colours and not flavours as description. Translation?

Tolkien was an English catholic, and people must realize that Catholics were a persecuted people who were overtly discriminated against right up until the early 19th century when they were not even allowed to hold political office. Even after they were officially fully enfranchised, they were still discriminated against socially, especially in the Oxbridge world were he existed. So it is more natural Tolkien would be move silent about his Catholism then say CS Lewis who was of the Church of England, albeit a high church Anglican. For Catholics to exist in England they often had to be guarded.

Does it cover his Mariology and Catholic beliefs regarding his Thomistic-Augustinian conception of predestination and sovereignty distinct from Calvin’s? Or does it just focus on elements that would be of interest to Protestants?

Highly recommend an accompanying read: “Mount Doom” by Paul List + Ali Ghaffari. Incredible read, connects a lot of dots and lot of “Tolkien experts” miss in the very plots of his stories. Made me really excited to reread the lotr series.

In reading a collection of Tolkien’s letters, I found he makes more direct references to his faith, most especially in the letters to his son Christopher. It’s clear he practiced his faith with deep and abiding conviction, though did have moments of struggle in that regard earlier in life.

I believe Ordway and Freeman are colleagues. I plan to read both this book (Freeman) and Ordway’s as well.

It seems to me Holly Ordway’s more recent work on Tolkien is more thorough than the Freeman book in many ways. In no way can Tolkien be made to be Protestant. He often grew frustrated with Lewis and his Anglicanism.
