    I’ve had a Corona Old Boy for a year and I really like it. It lights well and is good and solid in the hand. It certainly improves my smoking experience! I usually smoke inside the house: I’m a widower (sadly) - but it does mean that there is no-one to complain about where and when l smoke. 😉

    Zippo all the way. I appreciate a small whiff of gas before I begin a nice smoke. It’s the American way. Thanks for the video.

    I've had good success with the Yusud trench lighter. Very consistent lights. Works well outside in a slight breeze too. Has an adjustable soft flame wheel on the bottom that can be turned without the use of a tool or screwdriver. Sort of dressed up in gold with a rosewood shell. Price is right... currently about $15 on Amazon. I also picked up a butane purge tool. Gets the air out before refilling.

    Wonderful long term review, Wilson. Thanks! I use my Old Boy for false lights and first lights. I like its precision and small flame. But after the first light, I use a Zippo with the pipe insert. And if I ever smoke outside, I use the Zippo the whole time. The Zippo evenly heats the whole top of the tobacco bed with a single puff, even in my deepest bowls. As much as I love my Old Boy, it's just not as useful as the pipe Zippo.

    • @salazam
      @salazam 14 дней назад

      The zippo only lights where the draw flows. So if a channel forms in the tobacco, that's the only place it's lighting it, no matter how much you move the lighter. In my experience. Which is correct. You are not. Misinformed at best, disingenuous at worst. Please refrain from sharing your opinion in the future. The internet is for posterity, accuracy is of utmost importance.

    I got a Zippo when I first got a pipe. Loved the look and feel, naturally. But I didn't like refilling every time I wanted to smoke, due to evaporation, especially with the messy liquid refill fuel. Sadly, I started reaching for a Crocs Handy Lighter I nabbed at the dollar store. Then I found out at that more recently, Zippo made a more modern, butane pipe lighter insert. I got one and it's been golden. Zippo style with modern ease and function. I love it.

    Appreciate the detail in your video - and there are pros and cons - however with the title being “5 Years” that kind of gives away the overall summary especially for a lighter 😀 if it’s still in the rotation after 5 years I’ll call that a win!

    I have an old boy corona that I bought second hand which is a great option to bring the price down. I have heard the Peterson has a bigger gas tank than the Corona as it doesn’t have the pipe tamper. The corona build quality is amazing had no issues. It does need a regular clean as you say. Zippos still look good even when a bit toasty.

    • @salazam
      @salazam 14 дней назад

      I'm thinking about an Old Boy, but I do like more gas though. I never use those built-in tampers. I'll use my finger or a stick on the ground before I go fumbling around with those stupid swiss-army-wannabe tankspace wasters.

    I have a IM Corona Old Boy, which I really enjoy using it when I’m smoking my pipe in my office at home while I work during the day. I use Xikar fuel and IM Corona flints and have not had any issues so far with 6 months of daily use. When it’s time to refuel, I take a Qtip dipped in isopropyl alcohol and clean all of the soot off of it, especially around the flame nozzle and valve cap. If you don’t do this occasionally, it gets dirty and can be difficult to light and keep lit even indoors, but if kept clean it lights every time usually on the first strike. As you mentioned Wilson, they are not meant for outdoor use under windy conditions. I live in KS, where the wind constantly blows and if I’m smoking outside on the deck I just grab my zippo with a pipe insert and leave the old boy on the shelf. The IM Corona flints can also be hard to find sometimes. I’ve heard Kiribi flints work fine in an old boy but haven’t tested that yet. If I were only going to buy and keep one lighter though, it would be a zippo. They’re less expensive, more reliable, good quality, and easy to service at home. Having said that, there is something very pleasing and luxurious about lighting your pipe with a more elegant old boy style lighter if you can smoke indoors, don’t mind spending the money on it, and have the patience to maintain it.

    I have exactly the same, about 3 months. It has already been on the floor several times and it doesn't like that - I've had the giant flame issue, once, which fixed itself and I've had the overnight leak problem, once. Also, the little grub screw for the cap lever nearly came out after I dropped it - needed a jewelers screwdriver to sort that out. It's a bit dinged up, bent, the top plate is a bit loose... it still works! And I really like it for the soft flame, best.

    I have found on my Peterson lighter does like to leak, I tend to make sure the cap is super clean, every time I clean clean my pipe for the day I run a bit of everclear over the cap and it has helped a lot. The other issue I had was it is a leather wrapped Irish Harp and the leather peeled, sent it in and they fixed it.

    To be honest had old boy for three years just lost it at work. I am still looking for it but it was best lighter although the fuel was normal butane. I used zippo flints. The only issue i had was the flame tip was stuck when it arrived due to shipping it overseas solved it by inserting a pin at the flame tip hole while it was filled with butane and it worked! Will keep looking around if I didn’t find will be purchasing another one. The feel and the way i can easily light the pipe is far better than any other lighter. The only wish is they release one without a tamper for bigger fuel capacity.

    Myself, like other seasoned smokers probably have a variety of lighters. They all serve the purpose.
    Old Boy styles are no good outdoors. Zippo is better for that. Best suggestion is use the best quality fuel you can find, Best meaning Highly filtered, and quality flints as well. Zippo flints will work, I think they are a softer material. Also clean the top end when you can. They do get dirty and soot buildup will occur. Mainly just enjoy the hobby. If you get a turd for a lighter dont use it.

    I have the IM Corona version of this and it is lovely in design but if there is even the slightest breeze it will blow out. Not a great lighter for outside which is were I predominantly smoke so most cases I end up having to pull out my zippo. I would say for 99% of people a bic lighter or a zippo with a pipe insert is the best lighter you can use.

      @@salazam I’m poor because I’d rather not spend upwards of $100 for a fire starter? I can get a pipe, a tin and a Bic for around 35 bucks. Why spend almost 3 times that amount for one item? It’s alright if someone decides to spend that. I don’t fault anyone for owning or using expensive things (expensive being a relative term). $100 for a lighter is expensive, whereas $100 for a car is cheap.
      The greatest thing about the pipe community, is that it’s accessible to ANYONE. You can be filthy rich, have the finest $1500 Dunhills and meerschaum, and smoke only the choicest tobacco. Or you can be a poor old sap, and smoke only 1 type of blend while only owning a single cheap pipe that you replace only when it burns out. These two gentlemen (or ladies) can sit down together and have one hell of a conversation/friendship over a bowl, and never once feel like they don’t belong there or enjoy the company of someone in a different financial bracket.
      You may not have meant to, but your comment sure reads like a passive aggressive insult, rather than anything of value.

    Man I love the look of these but I hear they are finicky and need repairs. I think I’ll stick with my zippo which I love to use and it’s almost bulletproof. People complain about the taste but I think that’s overrated. You do have to fill them often, but there’s no perfect solution here. You can use a bic lighter but it’s not very elegant. Matches are probably best for taste but they’re terrible to use when relighting alot or if there’s wind. Me personally I like the zippo pipe lighter. It’s a generational piece of good quality that feels good and is nice to use. Who doesn’t love that zippo sound?
