I just bought my first pipe! It’s a Missouri Meerschaum Huck Finn Corncob and the Great Dane tobacco. Cant wait for it to come in and start this journey
Great Dane is still my favorite blend 20 years in. Just an amazing taste and room note. Enjoy, bud!
Welcome to the party pal. Ive been smoking for years and some of my MM cobs I like as much as any briar. Just in case someone tells you cobs are no good one day.
That’s a great cob. Congrats.
Welcome!
Welcome to the adventure brother!
When I see a man with that many books, only one thing comes to mind…. Threat to democracy.
Yes! Democracy is a scam.
Underrated comment. Love it
yeah well democracy is a total sham and a joke so thats great.
As a political scientist and new pipe smoker this was a gem of a channel to find.
Alan, I am the one that sent you the Billy Bud. Glad you enjoyed it as well as the other blends i sent.
Back in 1993 was able to smoke a bowl of Rattray tobacco that had been tinned in 1948, it was quite a treat.
Hello good sir!! Just thought I’d stop in a comment on a video because up till now I have not. I’m pretty new to this brilliant hobby and would like to compliment you on the work you do here on RUclips. I normally watch your videos on my TV so I don’t ever comment. But I decided to watch this one on my tablet and because it’s so easy to comment on it I figured I should do so. I absolutely love listening to you talk and am a big fan of your intellectual perspective on the hobby and all things you talk about. Your conservative insight coupled with your desire to talk about god is so refreshing that I had to say thank you for everything you bring to this world especially the hobby of pipe smoking. Brilliant content my friend. I can only hope that you continue to make it. 💯🔥🍻🍻
Cigar smoker for quite a few years here, recently decided to try a pipe. I quickly settled on Capstan Blue as a regular in my rotation. That's become my go-to "morning with coffee" blend, and I absolutely love it.
Capstan blue is worth the price
As a relatively new pipe smoker in a market with unbelievably high tobacco taxes, the only straight virginia blend I've tried so far is Cornell & Diehl's Opening Night. I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure that I'd buy it again. I preferred the G.L.Pease Gaslight I purchased at the same time, which from my understanding; is a pretty intense Balkan/English- it's the only Balkan/English I've tried to date though. I smoked through that Gaslight much faster than I smoked through the Opening Night virginia. However, I'm still interested in trying high quality virginia blends. Is Capstan blue miles ahead of this C&D virginia blend in terms of quality/taste/enjoyment; or are they ultimately comparable products? 50g tobacco tins cost between $60-70 here, so I try to be very careful with my tobacco purchases.
@@kingconcerto5860 Man, I'm so sorry to hear about your insane tobacco taxes. I haven't had opening nights yet so I can't say how much better it is or isn't compared to Capstan.
Since posting this I've also smoked a lot of Peterson Flake which in my opinion is another great Straight VA.
Capstan blue is indeed a terrific straight Virginia. Best of luck with you upcoming talks. Flannery O’Connor is one of my favorite authors. I need to read more GK Chesterton though. Might look up more on the distributive theory too.
Love how you hide the sarcasm brother 😂 just wanna say howdy from Texas. Glad to see there still some real men out there!!
I am 1 month into piping and am finally able to have nothing but ash left in the bowl. I enjoy Peterson early pipe, nightcap, and Captain Black cherry and really like Vanilla Custard! Thank you for the great videos 🔥
As always, I appreciate your witty words and insight. My take away tonight... Capstan Blue and picking up a copy of the Third Way. If only there actually existed a classroom that allowed lit tobacco pipes, dip pens and clever banter. Thank you, very good, Sir. A pupil in thoughts.
I'm a cigar smoker, about to dabble in a bit of pipe smoking. Picked up a couple of MM hardwoods and a pack of capstan blue as Tolkien is one of my favourites authors. I know you recommend not going for straight virginias as a newbie but I figured as a cigar smoker I should be alright. I also lean this way politically so finding your videos has been an enjoyable experience, not to mention your accent is great to listen to. Keep up the good work.
I just gotta say, that beard is MAGNIFICENT.
I first began learning about distributism when I began following John Medaille and the American Solidarity Party. I really perked up when you mentioned Rerum Novarum. So much to talk about...I am enjoying listening. Peace be with you
Brother, if you ever have an issue with tobacco nausea, try pressing hard on the pressure point just up from your wrist on the inside of your arm. It helps a TON!
Some amazing tobacco!
Live 15 minutes from Chattanooga and just went to my first pipe club meeting down in Rome.
Safe travels sir!
You been to burns? I love there tobacco, they can be a but depleted some times but they always get more
You should do a bookshelf tour someday.
St. Michael's Holiday, it's a great blend from a tobacco shop out in Arkansas called Ash and Ember. Jimmy Akins helped them out the blend together, it's fantastic
Our smoking habits are so similar it is actually scary. I probably don’t smoke as often as you do, but I’m trying to get in a better rotation with pipes. Now gravitating toward meerschaum and clay quite a bit. Just finished the “The Servile State” btw on the recommendation of Ben Wiker. Thanks for the talk!
Sounds like some great blends. I had a couple of those sickly experiences when I first started out but I learned about smoking on the empty stomach. Stay safe. God bless ya.
I am smoking some Royal Yacht right now. I like it a lot. Take care
A 50g tin of Capstan blue costs $70 where I live (online). Cornell & Diehl / G.L.Pease etc. are usually around $62/50g. I knew our tobacco taxes were prohibitively expensive here, but I didn't realize just how bad it was!
Thanks for sharing, Dr. H! I quite agree - tough to look bad with a Pete 87 in the clinch!!
Billy Budd is one of my all-time favorite tobacco. It’s one of those that I buy by the pound because I smoke through it so fast.
I would agree that Cornell and deal have a lot of mediocre blends, but they also have a number of good ones. Pegasus is amazing. star of east is also one that doesn’t get a lot of attention. Purple cow is also another great strong blend. Oh and morley's best.
Great video. 👍 I’m a supporter of Distributism, but I think it needs to be paired with Corporatism for a modern economy. And before anyone says anything, Corporatism is not Crony Capitalism, it’s based off of Catholic Social Teaching just like Distributism and its primary cause is class cooperation as opposed to class warfare that Marxists push. The channel Lavader has some good videos on Corporatism and there’s a book I think by Alexander Raven Thomas called “The Coming Corporate State” as well. It should be available on Internet Archive.
Catholic convert and new pipe smoker here. Also, a distributist. Finding your channel has been fun. Catching up on old videos. In Michigan now but soon going southern agrarian to east Tennessee. 🙏🏻
I love that GBD. The Perspex stem ( clear acrylic) is the most comfortable stem I’ve experienced in several decades of pipe smoking. I have a GBD Lumberman ( not a Canadian since Canadians have taper stems and Lumbermans saddle stems) just like yours and love it.
Straight Virginia are the best! ❤
Glad to know you'll be in my neck of the woods! 5 mi from the UF Thanks for the update Alan!
Dr. H, I'm looking forward to meeting you this Thursday!
Five Brothers if you want something tasty, strong and a good price
I live about an hour away from Grand Rapids but work Thursday. Hope you come back again!!
John cotton Kentucky. Exceptional.good strength.
FLORENCE Y'ALL
You can also infer a lot of distributism embedded in Tolkien's works. The more I read it, the more it's clear to me.
I’m not sure if that is the same Boswell you had in a previous video or not, but I absolutely love that pipe. I was kind of disappointed when I found out I couldn’t buy that exact same pipe.
You should consider having a discussion with George Bagby. He has a history background in both Chesterton and the US Civil war reconstruction period. I think you both would kick it off and would be very productive discussion.
See you Thursday! - Mark
Awesome content, thank you! Do you have a video where you explain to us beginners which pipes are good for which tobaccos? For example, a Savinelli pipe is good for virginias and a peterson might be better for english blends? Hope I'm making sense! Best regards
Orion's Arrow and Tuggle Hall are good C&D's. Sometimes I feel like they're my absolute favorites from any brand.
Love Boswells no bite delight and JMs Favorite... I prefer aromatics and right now I am really enjoying sutliffs raspberry creme.
Aro smoker here. I’ll have to try no bite delete. What would you say the nicotine content is like? I prefer it to be low.
Boswells Cupcake is one of the first tobacco’s I ever bought, and I always have some on hand. It really is a good one, but I find it has a medium/moderate nicotine hit. Not too bad or anything, just not low. But it taste so good.
@@airadaimagery692 I'm not 100% what the nicotine content is on No Bite but my guess is fairly low. I don't get any buzzy feeling or headache from it and I am only a weekly smoker not a daily smoker. Just very smooth with notes of dark chocolate. I'll be headed back to JMs sometime in October since he's only 2 hours from me. His selection is amazing. Like me JM doesn't like overy strong blends. I'll let ya know what I find out.
You mentioned Sleepy Hollow being among your top three fall blends ... what are the other two? Thanks
I guess Autumn Harvest by C&D
@@donbraugh185 Good call. I am thinking Cobblestone Walnut Maple Pie might be on his list as well
Ten Russians is a pretty strong blend and if you’re ever back in NC around Asheville Becks ole limey Bastard from B&B tobacconist is really good.
Do you have a video on just the basics of the different pipe tobacco like for beginner to the homie? Like pipe Tobacco 101? I’m new and don’t even know the different types but I want to learn. Thank you. 🙏
If you like Billy Bud, you might like C&D's Mountain Camp and Habana Daydream. Those are three of my favorites.
Welcome to distributism sir.
Some people say that Sleepy Hollow, is just Stuliff Pumpkin Spice.
Will you have your Flannery O'Connor talk available online anywhere?
It’s a possibility. 👍🏻
I just got a copy of Emily Wilsons Iliad, nothing to do with politics or deep reading, however it's a great interpretation of the Iliad and her Odyssey is superb. I highly recommend both of these. Im smoking a bent meerschaum with some C&D Sun Bear Black Locust, MMMMM MMMMM good.
If it makes you feel better. That Capstan Blue runs about $70 CAD in Canada. At $21 USD you can't afford not to stock and smoke it.
God that’s depressing…
How do I get the info on your visit to Florida I live close to ave Maria and I’d love to hear you speak!!
Drop me an email: alan@thepipecottage.com
What do you think about louisiana governor Huey Long? His arguments around wealth and capitalism seem to pair well with distributism
Well…..there is a certain type of Cultivar called “Cat Piss.” You will know it when you smell it, or when you smoke it. All it takes is one gm. in your pipe, and you will be higher than the Ravenel Bridge!
It's funny how your taste can change and how you end up liking things you didn't think you would. I thought I'd be a Virginia guy when I started. And I like some. But some of the worst blends I've tried are virginias. I really like burley and figured I would. Thought I'd hate Englishes but they are my favorite.
If you get a chance when you are in DC, come visit the Library of Congress where I work it would be great to show you around. And mabye enjoy a bowl of tobacco.
where was the pipe store in chattanooga that Mr Harrelson got the peterson christmas edition. Also is there any good pipe shops in gatlinburg or nashville
The Gatlinburlier in Gatlinburg. Richard and the crew are great.
Apparently you need smell a vision. Thanks for the tobacco review.
Have you had the chance for read "An Enemy Hath Done This"? It's by Ezra Taft Benson, former US Agriculture Secretary. He was also high up in the Mormon church, but it deals more with communism infiltrating agriculture. A couple decades newer than your preference (70'-80's), but I would be curious of your thoughts on it. Also, for a complete departure in many of C&D's blends, I would recommend Mad Fiddler Flake!!
I second Mad Fiddler. One of the strangest ten notes out there, but delicious smoke.
Weird, thought I hadn't seen you for a minute and looks like I had been unsubscribed. I'm sure it's totally normal and not at all suspicious activity by youtube...
I need some sleepy Hallow lol. I live in Colorado and the website doesn't seem to be working or I couldn't find how to order:(
You must place your order by phone
Yep, you have to call.
@@davidwickline7000 Thank You!
@@davidwickline7000 Thank You!!:)
Does a pipe tobacco leave a heavy aftertaste like a cigar?
In my experience I think pipe tobacco is more mild than cigars and doesn’t have as much taste. I’m new to pipes but have enjoyed tobacco ( cigs and occasional cigars) give it a try my friend
@@southernairman5628 thank you brother
I like C&D but I do agree with the good Doctor that many of their blends are very similar. However, I don’t look at it as a negative necessarily. For me that gives me options if I go to the local shop and what I’m looking for specially is sold out then I can choose something else that’s similar. Is their product line overwhelming? Yes. Could they condense it? Yes. Plus, I live in the area where they originally operated from in NC so maybe that why I gravitate toward their stuff.
With practice even 4 inches will work.
That’s what SHE said 😂
Keep growing that beard, sir! Always appreciate your content.
Rustica is the strongest I've had as far as nicotine is concerned. Not a nice flavor. I've got an unopened tin of McClelland dark star that I'm aging. Can't wait to see how good it likely is. Their virginias were unparalleled.
Its not Distributism that IS needed but Agrarianism.....one of the reasons Pope Pius IX and the Vatican morally supported the South
Distributism as anything more than a personal philosophy is garbage
