@hobbitonpiper Yes. The nicotine will absorb through your saliva. And if you're feeling extra dangerous, push it out through your nose and it'll absorb through the mucus membranes in your nostrils as well. I've gotten plenty of small head rushes without inhaling
@@RepublicOfGrowth you’ll see me demonstrate the “retrohale” (through the nose) in this video. That technique is very valuable for tasting a blend’s flavor nuances.

That's a gorgeous pipe. Nice, elegant take on a poker. Since the nic hit builds up in the bottom part of the bowl, choosing a shorter bowl would be advantageous, or simply give yourself a short fill on a taller one. Chimney style bowls provide a longer smoke in general, but also tars, moisture and things like nicotine build up even more toward the bottom.
Recently started smoking pipes and just found your channel. Such relaxing videos. Your explanations are so accurate and to bring in memories to the blends is amazing.
Hi buddy and greetings from a snowy North Yorkshire U.K. I’m finding my way around the ytpc and have found the community amazing and so interesting as I continue my pipe my pipe journey. Nightcap isn’t one for me at the moment but in time my taste may change as I’m more into aromatics, and my daily smoke is gawith hoggarth Cherry and vanilla mixed 50/50 with Ernimore and the two together really do work producing a lovely smoke.

Very new to the pipe world, came from cigars. This has become one of my favorite blends. Enjoy more than early morning pipe. Love the channel and have learned a lot here. Thank you.
Coming from cigars, this was suggested to me when switching to pipes. It was the first one I tried. I loved it and it got me more into pipe blends than cigars.
As always, a great smoke with you. I love grabbing a bowl of whatever you're talking about. I do love nightcap occasionally and found that I did pull out some of the nuances you described in ways I had not before. Thanks for the great videos.
I just bought Nightcap the other day and tried it for the first time. Instantly enjoyed it and will definitely keep it at the top of my rotation. Thanks for your videos. I enjoy them very much.
To me Nightcap isn't strong - it is, however, very _cozy_ and calls for a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book. Or a nice puzzle video-game. And yes, Englishes go real well in the colder months - although it doesn't stop me from enjoying them all year round. :D
I’m glad you took the time to watch one of my videos, thank you! Lots to explore here on the channel, many relaxing videos, be sure to see the Playlists tab! :)
You did such a great job of describing how you go about smelling the tobacco before smoking it. It has helped me when I went back to old tobaccos I’ve smoked to do a better job of smelling them; slowing down, thinking, etc. you, Alan Harrelson, and of course Muttnchop have helped me so much. You are truly appreciated.
Thank you for this encouragement! There’s a lot to explore and enjoy with pipe smoking, and I’m glad there are people like you that appreciate my shared thoughts!
Kevin I really enjoy your channel and the reviews that you do. I have my Peterson nightcap in my pipe and smokin right along with ya. Keep up the good work I appreciate the effort you put into your vids. Take care Wes from Cincinnati!
You've been one of my favorite pipe youtubers out there for a while now! I really enjoy your reviews and they have helped guide me through my pipe journey so far (which I am beyond happy with). If you don't mind, I would like to ask for your advice. I figured, if I really need advice, I might as well ask someone as experienced and seasoned as yourself. I'm stuck in a tough spot, and I have to make a choice: EMP, Nightcap or MM965. Haven't tried any of these before and (at the moment) can't really afford all three. I'm leaning Nightcap, but still unsure.
You can’t go wrong with any of these. EMP is a favorite of many, and is lighter while still being smoky. Nightcap is richer, stronger, and an evening smoke for many. MM965 is considered by many to be their favorite overall with its flavor profile. There’s no right or wrong answer here, it will be a matter of preference. If you’ve never had any of them I’d start with EMP. ruclips.net/video/ynVZe8oQDeA/видео.htmlsi=yV43fcA49AGOIu6L
@@hobbitonpiper Thank you very much, sir. I am looking forward to EMP then! I'll get em all in due time, but for now I'm stoked to get this blend. My pipe journey wouldn't be half as enjoyable without your channel!
This blend is on my wishlist. I love a full body blend and love the smokiness as well. From your review if it, I think it’ll be in my next basket. Cheers and Happy Sipping, Z~
I’ve been meaning to try nightcap. It’s still on my list of blends to try but I’ve been staying away from Latakia. Sadly the “Smokey” taste I get from a specific blend that has Latakia in it reminds me of the burning smell that fills the air right now as we are heavily impacted by the flood/tropical depression that came through NC where I live. People have been cutting trees down and burning constantly and sadly my brain associates that smell with that that profile in Latakia right now. I hope it will soon change and I can come back to it as it’s been a great blend for fall. As always though, thank you for this well thought out and articulated review. So happy to have cell service again to be able to watch your videos as I’ve been unable to watch videos due to no service or power. Much has been learned and one of those is to cherish the little things amongst it all. One of those things that got me through was simply enjoying a good fellow’s with our neighbors as we’ve come together during this time, the warm food and drink once we’ve gotten to safety and power on… and of course… a good pipe.

I just had a bowl of this after not having had it in a few years and it was a magical smoke. Late night under the stars and moon with debussy playing in the background. I agree, at first, this blend is mostly smokey latakia, but as you smoke down the bowl keeping in mind to sip the smoke as you do, there are a lot of wonderful and delcious undertones. Smokey, peppery, fermented and slightly sweet on the finish. Really really great stuff for a nighttime smoke. Stay excellent Kevin 🤙🏻
Well done. Great description, especially enjoined your instruction on the first smell and training your brain to smell other things. Also liked your instruction on lighting method. 👏
I was so glad to see Peterson bring it back. I still have some tins of Dunhill Night Cap from 2017. The Peterson version doesn’t seem much different. Smoking some 7 year old Orlik Golden Sliced right now. You have a new subscriber my friend.
I'm a relatively new pipe smoker, having started only 3 years ago. My first pipe, which i still use, was a Chacom montbrilliant 155. And my first 3 blends, recommended to me by my father in-law, was Maltese Falcon, Capstan Blue and Nightcap. I remember when I first tried Nightcap, because it knocked me on my butt so hard it scared me away from Latakia for the first year. But now i find myself unable to part with it in my weekly rotation. Tastes change. It's a damn good blend.
Many do not know that Latakia is actually one of the lowest nicotine content components. It’s been pre-cooked, so most all of the sugars, oils and nicotine is gone. It’s other components (in calculated amounts) that are providing the nicotine hit in strong blends.
I enjoy your content. Would like to see your pipe collection on a video. Thanks for sharing the information and review of the different blends of tobacco

@@hobbitonpiper ive smoked this blend slowly over the last 9 months, most recently last night. Totally forgot I commented on this video and watched it but it came up suggested so I watched again. This blend rocks, a perfect rainy night blend (just like last nights weather for me)
I just started smoking CBRM and Stokkeby's nougat. I'm tempted between Early Morning Pipe and Nightcap because the latakia sounds really interesting to this campfire nut. Thanks for your videos. I have learned so much from you.
I do not have the pallet experience that you have. Thank you so much for describing everything that you’re tasting so that I have a description of what I’m trying to taste. I don’t seem to be able to taste anything much unless I do a retro-hale. I think I do taste a little bit of the sour note. Thanks again your friend John.
Love your explanation of the different tastes you were experiencing. I recently picked up some of this. Looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for the video.
Great vid. It was interesting to hear about Germans and cold air, in Norway we tend to be opposite where we let children sleep outside in the winter. Once read of a Canadian woman who said that the norms in Norway would be child abuse in Canada 😂 Just love different cultures and of course a good pipe
Hello Kevin, my last pipe of today is Peterson EMP... Iwas afraid of english blends. I had a bad experience with a Scottish blend. A tongbite... But a few years later i smoke my first English blend without tongbite. I taste the smokeyness... But it is my first pipe EMP. I enjoy this blend. It is an experience to smoke Early Morning Pipe in the evening. I'm 50minutes in just did a relight after getting some of the ash out of the pipe. I amwaiting on a sample of Nightcap... My brother just bought a tin in Germany... After my first bad pipe with Orlik GS i smoked yesterday a corncob with Orlik GS and it was a great smoke... Nothing bad with Nicotine. As a first pipe in the afternoon OGS is a good choice. For me that is. The corncob was a good one to smoke the Orlik in to try again. Now in one hour with Emp... The bowl is empty... A cool smoking tobacco... In my Big Ben pipe... If Nightcap has the same positive experience as EMP...these could be favorites... I don't know if you can buy WO Larsen tobaccos in the USA... If yes they are worth a try. I smoked Lotus... An aromaticwith cocos and vanilla... I am impressed with this tobacco. Had a glass of milk with my smoking session... I believe the milk brought out the cocos out better... If you have the chance to try W.O. Larsen it is recommended Kind regards from the Netherlands, Rolf
I’ll tell you what. I waited a while to try this blend. I absolutely hated it on my first try. It tasted like super bitter stale mushrooms with wicked tongue bite. HOWEVER, I saw someone online said dont smoke it fresh out of the tin. So I took his advice and did what he said which was to fluff up all the tobacco and let it breathe with the lid off for 10 minutes. Close it up. Come back in a week and do it again. Smoke it a week after that and…. It is literally my favorite tobacco. It took me a few months to finish the tin because I wanted to savor every last drop of it. Let me say, by the end of my time with that Tin, the tobacco was so mellow, full, and sweet. What a beautiful deep flavor. There is nothing harsh about it. I’ve been holding off so hard for the majority of this year for buying more because I want to try so many other tobaccos. If I keep Nightcap on hand, it’s all I’m going to reach for. Beautiful blend. Air it out, let it age a tad, find the right pipe and cadence, and it very well may be your favorite as well. I’m currently cellaring about 60 different high end tobaccos and I’ve been hard pressed to find anything quite like Nightcap. It is popular for good reason. It is such a deep and satisfying blend. They really nailed it with that perique.
Good morning my friend. I always love to hear the happy music. I loaded up some EMP to enjoy while watching this. That is a really beautiful pipe. I like many of the Nording pipes and have several in my collection. I imagine you will also be bringing out the Thanksgiving Day soon as well. I see you managed to get some local birds in at the end as well. Have a good one and que the happy music.
In my opinion, folks greatly over think packing, especially with ribbon cuts. Just pack loosely to start and a little more firmly as you build the bowl, never too tight. More tips here: ruclips.net/video/PxNirgtpQIs/видео.htmlsi=J-MknxAtKNIQQlw4

That’s awesome, love Nightcap it’s my only English I smoke these days, has everything I want, some decent nic strength, rich flavour, ect. You inspired me to dig through old boxes and find an old zippo! Is that pipe insert you have using butane or zippo gas fluid?
I just bought this before i saw your video for it and im very happy with my choice after hearing your review on it it sounds like exactly what i wanted
Hello Kevin, I am smoking Nightcap as I’m watching this video. As always your reviews are spot on. Every time I get a new blend I look to see if you have done a review of it. Thank you sir and have a happy new year.
I was in a tobacco store in Mallorca last summer the only one I saw nightcap in. I was talking to the owner and I asked him if nightcap is a strong a tobacco. He said no it's not that strong. It turned out to be ture. I'm also a cigar smoker and I find often times pipe tobacco to be light compared to cigars. Anyway it's a fantastic blend.

I'm not really an english blend smoker but when i was at my local B&M the person I was talking to gave me a sample of balkan sobranie and it made me want to go back and try different english blends and I've really been enjoying balkan blends lately.
@@hobbitonpiper I'm glad that I had the chance to try it because now I'm trying different tobaccos to engage my pallet to different amazing taste, oh and I actually have a couple dunhill nightcap tins that might rehydrate and try out and so I can compare the original and new blend!
This review got me to pick up a tin! It's quite the bold flavor profile, but it was a nice introduction to the world of dark blends.. since then, I've really delved into blends I used to turn my nose at! Haunted Bookshop and OJK are now in my rotation. Thanks for your always-helpful reviews, Kevin!
Brought my first tin of that one in. I have not opened it yet but looking forward to it as the weather cools just a bit. I typically order about $100.00 per month of tobacco and usually try to add something I have not tried in the order. Good Smokes Sir.
Just got a “poker” a nording even but it’s a compass. I’ll have to smoke some of my tin of night cap in it to see if it makes a difference. Glad to see another video from you Kevin.
@@eddmtz4028 oh I love good burley based blends. See my reviews of Haunted Bookshop, Pegasus, Granger, and Wessex Burley Slice for some great examples in the Pipe Tobacco Reviews playlist :)
I tried this blend years ago in the evening. I loved the cozy old timey aroma...but had to let it rest as the nicotine will def make you sleepy. Maybe that's the point.
I love your channel. This blend is one of my favorites. What I mostly get is an incense. And that's why I love it. Although I wish I could could find a frankincense type tobacco.
@@hobbitonpiper It's funny. I quit smoking 10 years ago with the help of vaping. Now i'm loving pipes. Although I would love a good vanilla aromatic. I can't seem to taste vanilla in most of them. As far as aromatics go, sutliff's chocolate "dark and silky" mixed with mac baren's 7 seas regular is nice. Thanks for chatting!
I agree about the sour fruit flavours, and liked the evocation of the fireplace as you said it because that is how it smokes to me. I had to order a tin after tasting a few bowls of this one. As a new pipe smoker even I can see why this one is so popular, it is full-on and wonderful. Thanks for your video, I'll be keeping an eye on the blends you smoke.
I've been eyeballing this at my local tobacco shop, I'll have to grab it to try. I love latikia.Pirate Kake is my favorite so I'm sure I'll like Nightcap.
Hello Kevin. Yours is one of my favorite channels. I was curious on what your opinion is on G.L. pease Six Pence. I did a review on my channel I was surprised how much I enjoyed it
Another great video, Kevin, thanks. I started smoking between when Dunhill stopped production and Peterson / STG picked back up, so I read all those fond reminiscences about the iconic, and temporarily unavailable, Dunhill blends. I have a four-year-old tin of Nightcap that I'll have to open next. Or maybe Ten Russians. Love the poker. I have the best luck with Peterson system pipes, but I would like to get one that I can set down.
Another excellent video Kevin, when I started my pipe journey a few years back I got Early Morning Pipe, Autumn Evening and Nightcap. Originally I thought Nightcap was strong so I gave up on that blend. But after your video I'm going to revisit that blend. Thanks Kevin
J’aime beaucoup ce mélange anglais, son odeur fumée, son goût pas trop fort et plein de caractère… C’est un grand plaisir de fumer ce tabac dans une Peterson…😊
Hi Kevin. I hope you had a blessed Christmas. I was smelling the nightcap with you today. I pulled it out to smoke, however I decided to do an experiment, so I pulled out the early morning pipe tobacco. What I was doing is loading about a half a bowl of the early-morning pipe in my only meerschaum pipe, That I just got from Etsy. And then a half a bowl in my Peterson system silver spigot 303 pipe. And then lastly, I put a half of a bowl in my Savinelli 673-KS. PEOPLE ALWAYS TALK ABOUT having A PIPE THAT THEY SMOKE SUCH AND SUCH TOBACCO IN BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO TASTE THE BEST IN THAT PIPE. I DON’T HAVE THAT MANY PIPES. FOR SMOKING FOR ONLY ONE year, since I STARTED LAST JANUARY. I HAVE WHAT I THINK IT’S PRETTY GOOD COLLECTION. I HAVE FIVE PETERSON SILVER SPOTS. I GOT THE PETERSON PIPE OF THE YEAR FOR 2023 AND THEN I HAVE FIVE Savinelli’s ‘AND SOME CORN COBS AND THEN I just purchased a meerschaum pipe because PEOPLE WERE RAVING ABOUT HOW GREAT THEY SMOKED SO I WANTED TO TRY IT. SO ANYWAY, I WAS JUST TRYING TO SEE, IF I COULD TELL if ONE PIPE SMOKED BETTER THAN ALL THE REST. I THINK THE meerschaum AND THE PETERSON WERE PRETTY CLOSE TO THE SAME THE SAVINELLI WHEN I FIRST STARTED SMOKING IT, HAD THIS HORRIBLE, STRINGENT, BITTER FLAVOR COME OUT, ALMOST LIKE THERE WAS SOME SORT OF WEIRD THING INSIDE THE PIPE before I loaded it. THAT WAS DEFINITELY THE WORST EXPERIENCE. BUT AFTER SMOKING A LITTLE BIT THAT ALL WENT AWAY SO THEY’RE VERY SIMILAR TO EACH OTHER. I STILL KIND OF THINK the meerschaum SMOKEd THE BEST OVERALL. I LIKE THAT 303 THE BEST OUT OF THOSE THREE PIPES. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED SOMETHING LIKE THIS EXPERIMENT JUST TO SEE WHAT STYLE OF brand of PIPE OR SMOKE THE BEST FOR CERTAIN BLENDS? NOW. THE REAL REASON WHY I WATCHED THIS VIDEO FOR PROBABLY THE THIRD OR FOURTH TIME was because I WANTED TO CONTACT YOU BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I KNOW YOU THE BEST OUT OF EVERYBODY THAT I’VE EVER CONTACTED IN THe YTPC. I SAW SOMEBODY CLEANING A PIPE AND THEY WERE USING ALCOHOL TO CLEAN THE WHOLE PIPE OUT LIKE I ALWAYS DO AND I SAW ONE OF THE COMMONERS SAYING DON’T EVER PUT ALCOHOL OR ANY OTHER SOLVENT INTO AN ACRYLIC STEM. SO I GOOGLED THAT, AND A BUNCH OF LAB GUYS HAD RESPONSES THERE AND THEY SAID THAT IF YOU PUT ANYTHING LIKE ALCOHOL INSIDE ACRYLIC, IT WOULD START to IMMEDIATELY CAUSE IT TO BREAK DOWN AND FORM HAIRLINE CRACKS AND YOU SHOULD ONLY CLEAN IT OUT WITH WARM SOAPY WATER. SO I JUST WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW BECAUSE I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED DOING THE ALCOHOL IN THE STEAM. I USE IT STILL IN THE STummel PART, BUT I JUST WANTED TO WARN YOU BECAUSE MOST PIPE GUYS USE ALCOHOL IN THEIR STEMS. JUST LOOK THAT UP AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK. YOU HAVE A BLESSED WEEK. JOHN.
Hi John. Using alcohol in acrylic stems has been a debate for a long time. Acrylic is not a single formula. Each house has its own blend. Castello for instance has a fantastic proprietary blend they’ve used forever and it’s very alcohol resistant. Others may not be as good. Regardless, I think it would take a very long time to cause problems. My friend Russ has 30+ year old acrylic stems that have seen lots of everclear and are holding up just fine. As a matter of fact, he said he’s never had any alcohol damage in any of his acrylic stems. And he’s never seen a vulcanite or ebonite stem crack from alcohol either. So I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
Kevin, you are the Bob Ross of the pipe world. You are a calming influence for me and I appreciate that. Keep on keeping on

You’re very welcome! Enjoy the journey! :)
It soooooo quiet there! Love hearing the critters while you talk.
I do love being outdoors!
To me Nightcap isn't strong - it is, however, very _cozy_ and calls for a warm blanket, a cup of tea, and a good book. Or a nice puzzle video-game. And yes, Englishes go real well in the colder months - although it doesn't stop me from enjoying them all year round. :D
Absolutely! :)
Love your style bringing in the story telling and how your mind wanders with the blend setting the stage. Great video!

Have just ordered a tin - thanks Kevin for such a well rounded and considered review 👍
You’re very welcome, I hope you enjoy exploring that tin!
Here are a couple of videos that show many of them. If you watch these plus the Pipe Stories playlist videos, that’s a lot of them!:

Larsen it is recommended
Kind regards from the Netherlands, Rolf
@@rolfsblog sounds like you’re making enjoyable progress! Very good :)
I'm about to try this now. I enjoy your videos man you got me on to pipes
Hope you enjoy!
Great comment! Thank you for this input and for sharing your experience!
Great breakdown! Thanks Kevin.

Interesting pipe packing technique, can you elaborate as I always do the 3 step method
In my opinion, folks greatly over think packing, especially with ribbon cuts. Just pack loosely to start and a little more firmly as you build the bowl, never too tight. More tips here:

It turned out to be ture. I'm also a cigar smoker and I find often times pipe tobacco to be light compared to cigars. Anyway it's a fantastic blend.
