Good advice. It is nice to see that as a community we encourage new pipers to enjoy and not get frustrated. Techniques like this are very helpful. I had guide, my dad, so it was easier. Good habits, good results. 🙂
I had my first smoke with a pipe and had to re light it so many times that it wasn't enjoyable. I tried the microwaving thing, and it totally worked. I was absolutely smoking very wet tobacco. Thank you so much for making this video and helping a newbie out.
Awesome. I attend a cigar lounge here once a week, and I’m always smoking my pipe. I tell beginners the same thing, dry your tobacco out and find a cadence that work for you, but it takes practice. I’ll refer them to your channel
Great advice! Like you said, most of these habits become second nature after some time. Smoking along with you: mix of dark burley and AAA burley, bulk blending burley from Pipes and Cigars. Packed in a Chuck Long Working Man's pipe.
Excellent tutorial. I would add, after packing the pipe to test the draw before lighting it. It's commonly said that it should feel like drinking through a straw. If it feels like pulling a milkshake through a straw, that's too tight. Dump the pipe and start over.
Nice! The only thing I find , even as most of my pipes are filtered, when you tamp it during the smoke to push down the ash, I taste the ash for the rest of the pipe smoke. So I use a tool to stir up the ash and I dump it out. But you didn't ask. Just had something to say about the conversation. Thank you
Rather have to relight it multiple times than try to keep it lit to the detriment of the flavor. It will come with time. Smoking c and d rajahs court in a cob. Absolutely wonderful blend
I just watched a few videos on how to smoke cigarettes. It was much easier than I thought. And with a nice vest on you really don't even think about it. It just seems to come naturally.
Thanks for the video Wilson. Microwaving the tobacco is something that’s obvious but something I’d didn’t think of so thank you very much for this great nugget.
Enjoy learning , some tobaccos (not many) condor for example do smoke well moist , another way to keep your pipe lit is to just give a gentle reverse blow down your pipe( with the emphasis on the word gentle , keep your pipe clean. I was smoking a pipe for years before I found out about this gentle blow down your pipe trick.
Another excellent video, Wilson! I recently had some issues with tongue bite with an English blend. Your points about cadence rang true and I think I was puffing too fast and long. I've slowed down and begun "sipping" rather than "sucking." Paying attention to cadence helped a lot. Anyway, great tips as always. Glad to count you among my virtual brothers of the leaf and even more importantly a brother in Christ! Blessings , Chris
Great video. I think it is time for another theology update video especially on the Simplicity of God you mentioned you were reading by Muller, I think. Great Job, Keep 'em coming.
Thank you for this! I’m smoking an aromatic while watching this. Definitely gonna try the microwave trick next time because I relight often. Not a big deal to me though.
I've been getting frustrated trying to get this right and between the comments and the video i can't believe the difference in flavor and smoke production. So much more of an enjoyable thing now that i don't have it baby it every 20 seconds. Microwave trick for the win
- great video Pastor Marsh! .. a couple things I have found, one - I only tamp when I notice my draw getting "loserelight nearly as muscr" is the only way I can describe it, that way I don't over-tamp ... and secondly, for me the biggest thing was to just get over the fear of relighting. For the longest time I thought the goal was to smoke a bowl completely without relighting, once I heard more experienced pipers saying that relights were just part of the process, and realized I wasn't in a slow-smoke competition every time picked up pipe, my enjoyment increased and strangely enough I found I wasn't relighting nearly as much as before ... btw - nice pipe, do you only smoke certain things out of your pokers ? ~ Robb
Hi Wilson, really good effort to explain loading and lighting a pipe. On the tobacco loading section, it was a bit difficult to see but you seemed to be ‘feeding’ the tobacco loose into the pipe. Was that the case? I have seen many different techniques before, but your method is really interesting. You did not seem to squeeze the ribbon into a tighter shape before feeding it either. Is that right? A close up of the action you use would be neat. Really good though. 👍
I'm liking your videos ! I'm the only pipe smoker I know who doesn't own a tamper. I have a perfectly good one to break the ash bridge on the tip on my index finger. If I smoke a lot I will develop a small callous. I do had a Czech tool to deaden the smoke if I'm stopping for a bit. I mainly smoke while driving so that's one less thing to fiddle with. Good video !
I am getting ready to try a pipe again after many years. Here's my take from my experience 40 years ago on pipe tobacco: If it is flavorful, it stinks; if it is not flavorful, it is aromatic. I need a beginner's tobacco that has some flavor but doesn't stink as I smoke indoors most of the time while working. Suggestions, please? Nice channel; I subscribed and will hit some other videos soon.
Fantastic video. Very helpful. I been smoking pipes only a couple of months. Would love to see a video on gurgling. Sometimes it happens sometimes it doesn’t and I don’t know too much about it. Cheers from Northern Illinois
I was just getting frustrated with trying to keep flakes lit and enjoyable. Long story for another time. But this video couldn't of come at a better time regardless. I might be missing something aside from figuring out the drying time. which is honestly where I think Im messing up the most.
Are they VA flakes by any chance? If so, I've found they need to dry out longer than other flakes, almost to the point where you'd think it's too dry to smoke. Make sure you get a strong light after your initial char light, and then take it slow from there. Flakes always need some relights anyway.
@@TheHammerofDissidence Bold Kentucky, NM 400 and Luxury Navy flake. @@HammerandPipe I can only assume it's the way you're folding and stuffing then? What I know helps is to fold N stuff for the first 3/4 of the bowl and then top it off with rubbed out flake. That way you'll have a nice ember bed to burn down the flake. And for what it's worth, Bold KY tastes pretty much the same rubbed out so no need to fiddle with it if it's giving you trouble (I was actually smoking a bowl of it when I responded to you, lol).
I bought captain black and seven seas( both aromatic) and just left the bags open for half a day. They feel much drier now but not too dry like they’d smoke good. Hopefully it worked.

great video, if you're new, this is excellent help with a lot of great information. . . now, on to a more serious note . . . great job on the books! I may have tried to see what's on the shelf better . . . okay, I looked really hard. :)
The fact it goes out from being lit is good because you can put it in your pocket and keep it for later. If you smoking like a machine it costs a fortune
Any recommendations for a beginner who really enjoys aromatics? I enjoy the sweet scent and taste that it offers. I purchased a vanilla Cavendish, and I can't say that I have too much trouble keeping it lit. Is that the only reason why you don't recommend these variants of pipe tobacco?
If your pipe goes out and you have to relight it do you have to take off the top layer of ash. Thanks for the videos they are very helpful to a soon-to-be pipe smoker. After watching one of your other videos I have ordered a refurbished pipe from eBay and am eagerly awaiting for it to arrive.
No you don't. Unless you sit the pipe down unfinished for some time (1 hour to a day) which then you may want to but outside of that, no it's not necessary.
@@TheSpurgeonPiper thanks for responding. I’m assuming it’s caused by the tobacco being too moist or wet. I’ve been smoking aromatics and they have been a bit on the wet side so on my next smoke I will take the time to dry it out and go from there. 👍🏼
That’s great! I think part of the hookah culture is going to be transitioning to pipes when they get older. They actually inhale which wasn’t originally how hookah was intended. FYI: The OG hookah smokers would “sip” the smoke but somewhere down the line it turned into “hey look at the big, white cloud I could make with this glycerin infused shisha (hookah tobacco).”
Packing the bowl and keeping it lit are the same problem. Pack the bowl correctly and the bowl will stay lit. Tamping is just repacking the pipe as it burns.
Packing the bowl correctly is important but only part of the process. -You can have a perfectly packed bowl but if the blend is too wet, you'll still have issues. Same with a messed up smoking cadence. Or tamping too much or hard. There are several variables that can cause issues in keeping the pipe lit.
