Ever since I left the SBC and became a Reformed Baptist one thing has stood out as the main difference between the two and that is expository preaching. What a blessing it has been to sit through the preaching of entire books of the Bible rather than exclusively topical sermons. We really do feed on the meat if the word that way and I couldn't go back. It's sad that many saints are starving for truth and getting TED talks rather than sermons. Looking forward to more content like this on the channel brother. Grace and Peace to you and the church there!
As an SBC preacher, I can offer you some encouragement. There is a resurgence of expository preaching. All my preaching professors from NOBTS, a SBC seminary, teach the value of expository preaching. I hope that we continue to see a trend back towards expository preaching as the norm in the SBC.
@@acsprayb that's good to hear, I don't know if any SBC churches in the Columbia, SC area that offer it. Most preach sermon series that they download off the Internet. Not even writing their own sermons. I don't doubt the seminaries train for that but I think many pastors are lazy and because the rolls of elder/deacon are essentially reversed it takes the elders time away from prayer and the study of the word. Many SBC churches are deacon led rather than led by a plurality of elders and that also leads to problems from my experience. Praying for reform in the SBC.

Luckily, there is a move toward elder polity too. It is definitely the minority, but many SBC churches are making that shift.

I'm Eastern Orthodox, but I used to be Reformed Baptist. Though I believe all the dogmas of the Orthodox Church, including our rather exclusive ecclesiology, I commend this liturgical approach and commend the Christianity of it. The dancing stormtrooper clubs aren't churches. Even the soft rock/TEDtalk groups are barely recognizable as Christian religion compared to historic Christianity. This humble liturgy is worthy of the name Christian in my opinion, for whatever my opinion is worth. May God reunite us one day! And many years to you and your flock!

Just found your channel, and love the content. I pastor a Reformed Baptist church in St Clair Shores (SE Michigan). I also enjoy a good pipe and Cigar.
My feelings toward a "formal liturgy" have been changing over the years. When I was younger I felt that liturgy tended towards rote box checking. As I've gotten older I've begun to appreciate the intentionality.

Happened across your channel for pipe smoking info, but was pleasantly surprised to see the religious aspect as well. As one who was baptised in the Baptist Church (SBC) and later confirmed in the Anglican Church, I've got to know: real wine or grape juice?!!! Thanks for sharing with us your liturgical service, Wilson! Interesting stuff. We in the Orthodox Church hear the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom most Sundays (and feast days) during the year and the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great ~4 times a year. They are fairly similar. You might find them interesting. Almost entirely made up of Psalms and Holy Scripture. The liturgy is sung and chanted a cappella.
As a Reformed Baptist brother, I really appreciated this video. I love how your church’s order of service is a reflection of the Gospel; that is a great touch that really underscores the Good News, the very reason why we meet.

Great video! I actually made a similar one about our church’s liturgy about a month ago. I promise I wasn’t copying you! I actually walk through the church’s liturgy like this when I do the new members class at our church. Infinitely better to pattern the liturgy after the gospel and the ministry of Word and Sacrament rather than the revivalistic liturgy.

Have you read Bryan Chapell's Christ-Centered Worship? He provides a similar rationale for the liturgy of the service. I also found Jeffrey Meyer's The Lord's Service helpful on explaining the rationale of liturgy. Thanks for the video!
I need God in my life for selfish reasons. I have "mental health problems" but one day I thought what if its a demon so I called out "in the name of Christ I command you to leave this body" and I felt this surge of euphoria that I've never felt before. It wasnt long lasting relief but a few weeks latter I called out "in Jesus name to name the demon inside of me" and it named itself wrath. So I said "wrath in the name of Jesus you are command to leave this body" and I again so far relief. Any prayers would help.

Beautiful liturgy brother!
I was SBC for 26 years then attended a reformed Baptist church as I became convinced of predestination before merits to heaven and Hell and then Catholic when I was 26.
Oddly, Calvin is way closer to traditional Catholic theology than Luther though a Lutheran church often looks more similar to a Catholic service.
Of course, there are large differences but I don’t think I would have become Catholic if I hadn’t seriously studied the reformed tradition.
I have a few questions that I hope you might answer and offer counsel…
1.) Will you be attending the Founders Conference hosted by Founders Ministries at McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers in January?
2.) My wife works full time at our church as Director of Finance, and has for nearly 15 years.
Our church has 6 campuses as well as an international ministry.
We don’t have stormtroopers or punt the Holy Bible across the stage during football themed services (like I saw a video of one “church” doing).
But it is definitely “growth oriented”.
I wouldn’t call it a “seeker” church per se.
The Word and Holy Doctrines have not been distorted in order to reach people by being “of the culture”.
But every service begins with a 30 minute “worship” concert that is as loud as any concert I’ve ever been to (and I was present at an outdoor Metallica concert at a festival many years ago… which isn’t my preference btw).
It’s LOUD!!
The lead pastor dresses like the hippest of hipsters and has on new $300 sneakers every week.
He calls his wife a “lead pastor” as well and she preaches often.
There is no prosperity gospel or “love is love” woke preaching.
But the sermons are all basically “Christian Living” topical sermons and there is no expository preaching.
There is much milk, but little solid food in my opinion.
I guess I’m more “conservative” than the direction of the church.
I’ve tried to discuss these things with my wife and it didn’t go well at all.
How do I express these concerns to both her and the pastor?
3.) I will be at the Founders Conference in January.
Would it be wrong to ask for Pastor Tom Ascol and Pastor Voddie Baucham’s autographs on their books “By What Standard?” and “Fault Lines” during one of the meet and greet times?
Or would that be idolatrous?

I'm sure Tom and Voddie would be glad to sign their books for you brother. As for the mega church model of multiple campuses and rock concerts and the direction your church is going I'll be praying for you. That is an unfortunate direction that most churches never recover from, Spurgeon called it the downgrade. The growth of a church isn't measured in numbers but in the holiness of the lives of its people. You seem to be reading the right people and can see the obvious problems with the church.
I would recommend some books by John MacArthur such as "Ashamed of the Gospel" and "Worship" both deal with these issues. Especially "Ashamed of the Gospel". You may be able to get your wife and Pastor to read them as well. I would not expect him to be willing to change if he is as far down that path as you described. Most likely it will be you who makes the change because you will not be willing to continue to support that and will desire true worship and a biblical church. Finding a biblical church(One that preached the true gospel, has qualified leadership, properly administers the ordinances, and practices church discipline) and leading your family there is not an easy task, pray and ask the Lord to give you the wisdom and courage to do what is right.

I used to be Reformed Baptist before reading the Book of Concord and became a confessional Lutheran.
Huh. Being a former Anglican priest who finally left and went to Rome but who grew up in the Bible belt, I found that interesting.
Do you believe in predestination? I grew up in SBC, but I have a great friend who is Primitive Baptist. He has me thinking and searching the Truth.
Just curious, do Confessional Baptists practice open or closed communion? Most SBC churches I've been affiliated with do a partial closed, meaning anyone who is a baptized believer who is in "good standings with their church" (whatever that means lol) can partake. I know our Lutheran and Anglican brothers and sisters practice closed communion, typically. Where do Confessional Baptists land?
I absolutely love that you do the Lord's Supper weekly. This is what Christians have always done, and the dearth of Eucharistic practice among Christians is nothing short of the work of satan himself. I'd love to visit your parish someday.
As a Catholic; we hold that the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of the Christian life. We believe as the early Church did (and also in Scripture John 6) that it is the body, blood, soul, and divinity of the Living Christ;

Can you refute the Orthodox Churches claim to be the one true CHURCH founded by Jesus and His apostles?
He said outright he’s not making this polemical… but for that, my argument is the same as it is with catholic folks that say that.
It’s simple. All orthodox (right doctrine teaching) forms of Christianity agree with things like the apostles creed where we confess that we believe in one church, Catholic (global). Then the other thing is scripture. Any church making this claim has the burden of proof in their hands… they must prove it with scripture.
@@nathanclark3575 The proof wouldn't be on the Orthodox Church, it would be on those that changed practice and interpretation. Who put the scriptures together? The Orthodox Church ,when they where unified with the now schematic Church of Rome. To claim the Bible is the Holy word of God, would be to pre suppose that the early Church was correct then and ,sense they haven't changed, now. The Bible most Christians read today has been reinterpreted multiple times with most western Christians never knowing how many books King James removed or why. I just don't understand how anyone who has read Church history can claim that anything outside of Orthodox Christianity is correct. If you like you flavor, fine, but your living only half the faith.

So the proof wouldn't be on them, it would be on the ones that changed interpretation and practice. The fact they put the word of God together, presupposes they are correct.

@@Mr.C-you-laterJesus never set up a church. He was a wanderer. So just because they pulled together the individual writing for the New Testament (as the old was pretty much pre-established before Jesus was born), doesn't make them the one true church. They created customs and such based on the teachings but they are just men as well. Remember the core of the faith is a personal relationship with God, so go with what works for you and let others do the same as long as you all are following God then there is no issue in how you express it.
Why do you prefer the term Confessional Baptist over Reformed Baptist?
It’s more specific in the modern day. People use reformed for many things but holding to a specific confession identifies him with a more specific set of necessary doctrines.
As a presbyterian, I am sympathetic to reserving the term "Reformed" for those who hold to covenantal paedo-baptism baptism.
Particular Baptist is a good term with historic precedence.
