In family, medical, and religious situations I just do the Ron Swanson and hand them my permit that reads "I can do what I want." Jokes aside, nobody I've known cares and several people at my church and in my family smoke pipes and cigars.

I’ve smoked a pipe for over a decade, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the plains of Nebraska and everywhere in between. I’ve yet to come in contact with someone who did not either admire or reflecting fondly on a memory of a relative who also smoked a pipe.
Keep on piping, keep the flame alive! 🔥

Thank you Wilson. Just happened upon your channel.
I am a man of 68. Been enjoying pipe smoking since I was in my teens. Never flaunted it. I usually light up when I am alone or at home. Been working the same job for 15 years now and for the most part my workmates have no clue of my hobby. If I was going to get a failing medical condition from it I'm sure that I'd be aware of it long ago. My PCP says that I should quit it just for the fact that it could effect my health. But so could drinking a diet coke. As a matter of fact I feel that it has helped me in life more than hurt me with just the fact of slowing down, sitting, relaxing and pondering about my life, my decisions and life's challenges ahead of me.

I started smoking a pipe last year when I turned 50. I have never smoked anything before, but had always been fascinated by pipes and the smell of pipe tobacco. I am an undertaker by trade, and so I see life from a different perspective. My argument is that one day I am going to die, and I am good with this. I think it's better to die having lived a life you have enjoyed, than living to very old age and suffering with dementia or alzheimers. My pipe journey is proving to be a wonderful journey of discovery, not only learning what I enjoy, but also what I really don't. I accept that my health may be impacted one day, and there is empirical scientific evidence to support that there increased risks of esophageal cancers associated with pipe smoking. But I am not going to live forever, so I accept that. Alan Harrelson made a great video a few months ago with the message that children ask permission, men don't, and I agree with that. However we must also be respectful of other peoples air, space and environment, and set the example. Pipe smokers should act as gentlemen and be courteous. By educating those around us, as to why we enjoy our pipes we can also perpetuate the idea among others. Here in the UK pipe smokers seem to be a rare thing now, and brick and mortar stores are few and far between. So I am grateful to the YTPC, for the great videos that we share.

I couldn't have put it better myself. I've smoked a pipe on and off for 40 years and am aware of the risks. As one gets older l think it is important to grab life by the horns in the knowledge that death will come sooner rather than later.
I think that a life lived in fear is a life half- lived. In other words, carpe diem, in the sure and certain knowledge that the Grim Reaper will get us in the end. Having a religious faith, Christian or otherwise, seems to mitigate this fear.

I grew up with the "I don't drink, smoke, or chew or hang out with those who do" mentality. I choose not to drink alcohol, have never been drunk or high. But I have always been fascinated by pipes. I've had the guilty feelings about it too. But I do it so infrequently I'm not really concerned. God knows my heart and he can read my mind. I only do it at home or maybe on vacation.

I mentioned my interest in cigars and pipes to my very dear Reformed friend in Ukraine, and she thought it was interesting. She shared with me that a couple years ago she began smoking cigarettes about once a week, and occasionally drinking alcohol as usual. But with the war and relationship problems, she took to cigarettes and alcohol as an unhealthy coping mechanism, and it became a daily thing for her. She quit cigarettes and now again only drinks in moderation for the flavors and smells. But it's a great illustration of what you're talking about. There's a huge difference between partaking in alcohol and tobacco as an art and way to explore the incredible flavors and scents God has created, and just using them mindlessly and as an escape.
I think it does a lot of good for kids too, to see adults partaking of these things as a thing of art and responsibility, not just seeing it as a means to getting drunk or something to do to look cool. Instead of telling people to avoid it at all costs because you might misuse them, show people how to NOT abuse them and how to glorify God with them. Giving people maturity instead of limitations. Same as you don't teach people sex is bad and you should never do it because it can be abused, you instead teach them about marriage and train them in the spiritual and relational skills they need for marriage.

With pipe smoking, as with other things, moderation is the key. It is not sinful if we remember to use moderation (as with alcohol). But I have never seen a "chain" pipe smoker or anyone who has become addicted to the tobacco pipe. Unfortunately, many people equate pipe smoking with cigarettes, where there is no comparison to make.
    God bless brother.

Excellent discussion, Wilson! I especially appreciate your emphasis on approaching people with some grace, the chance for education, and honesty about the risks. My sister was so concerned because her father-in-law died from COPD after a lifetime of very heavy cigarette smoking. So nicotine addicted that when he was forced to quit he had to constantly chew nicotine gum, even while falling asleep. She was surprised to learn that pipe and cigar smokers don’t normally inhale, and many of us avoid getting too much nicotine because it can make us feel unwell. Unlike cigarettes, it’s pretty hard to weave pipe smoking into our days enough to become addicted. Proof? If I can’t smoke a pipe every day I’m not jonesing for a hit of nicotine. Finally, I pointed out that our uncles who smoked pipes lived long lives and eventually succumbed to diet issues, not tobacco. Learning this allayed her concerns. Learning this allayed her concerns.

Thanks for the video, Wilson. I just turned 60 last month and have been pipe smoking for the past couple of years. I’d tried it in my 20’s but stopped because I felt guilty. I grew up in a church that preached against, smoking, drinking, playing cards or pool, or going to the movies. I used to feel guilty about all of those things. I remember once, going to see “Jaws” when it first came out. My mom even told me, “Don’t say anything to your grandma about going to the movies.” Anyway, I said all of that just to say that it’s that type of guilt, not anything found in the Bible that has affected me my whole life. So, I’m the only 60 year old on the planet who doesn’t know how to play cards, feels guilty when tasting alcohol, and even when I smoke my pipe! So, thanks again for your thoughts on this. Keep up the good work and God Bless you brother! Oh, and my mom, who will be 80 in June still doesn’t like my pipe smoking and lays a guilt trip on my if I talk about being discouraged with my local church (which I grew up in.) Some things never change!

My wife and I found a new church when ours became more about religion and rules than about a relationship with the Lord. The one we attend now preaches from the Bible. I think any church has be rooted in God's word. But I'm learning how to walk with God seven days a week in spite of my shortcomings, and not just feeling guilty on Sunday morning. I'm not an expert on Christianity, far from it. But I do know that we are all flawed and imperfect in His sight. In my former churches I used to think I was the only one who was screwed up. But I'm learning that God loves us and wants to be in relationship with us even with our flaws. At Cedar Creek Church we like to say that we are all messed up, broken people but together we are helping each other find our way back to God. That works for me. I pray that you will find this for yourself too brother!

Wilson, it’s amazing to me that they feel the need to voice their opinion to me. I certainly don’t, for instance California chased the tobacco industry out of their state. I have a friend who’s retired now because of this movement. He still lives there and I asked him what those people who questioned the pipes and cigars, think of the Marijuana smoking that they voted in to legalize just about everywhere. He said good question, he had no answer he said I had a good point he had never thought of it. Now we have nearly all the states have legalized it, and yet my pipe or cigar is the problem. Over half our population is morbidly overweight but I don’t shame them when the order a supersize meal w/ a Diet Coke. Maybe will learn to get along without (preaching) no pun intended our feelings about everyone else’s choices they make…. Good video 😎

I think the important thing, as you essentially said, when broaching these topics is to handle them like Paul says in Ephesians 4, “to walk in a manner that is worthy of the calling you have been called to” He goes on to layout that humility, gentleness, patience and eagerness to maintain the unity of the Spirit are key aspects of living out our lives in a way that is worthy of the calling. Grace of course being part of that patience and gentleness. Thanks for your content.

I am not a pastor or a theologist, but I do recall certain parts of the bible that say in summary everything to moderation. Alcohol was consumed at the last supper. There seems to be no issues with alcohol being flavored, alcohol being consumed. I am also fairly sure some of the burnt offerings and incense that got inhaled wasn't that great of stuff either. I also don't recall smoking a pipe impairing my judgement and allowing me to slam into a bus full of kids head-on. However do not destroy the holy temple God gave you which full inhalation would do. My mother got onto me about it and I told her that in my solitude with a pipe I probably spend more time talking to God and furthering my relationship with him than most do at night before bed, at meals, etc... Pipe smoking is a 30+ minute event and I have not personally witnessed anyone praying for that long. Plus the big factor, God knows what is in our hearts and in mine is not destroy or impede others. Just enjoy life, nature, friends, family and the simple yet totally fulfilling gifts we have in this world. There's my 2 pennies worth of thought.

I’m an Orthodox Christian who smokes cigars and is looking to get into pipes, my parish priest smokes a pipe. There are several elders, readers, deacons in my church who smoke pipes and/or cigars. One of them is a doctor, a Gastrointestinal physician, and he has told me that much of the highly processed crap food we eat is *way* more likely to give us diseases and the polluted air we breathe in cities than occasionally smoking a pipe or cigar. We should be more worried about if we are living an accordance with Christ’s commands and separating ourselves from the rest of the world to be closer to Him, not if we smoke pipes and cigars. It’s just silly and it is born out of ignorance and arrogance.
God bless you, Pastor. I pray for your health and that the Holy Spirit guides you so that you may guide your local flock on the right path.

Good conversation to have with the younger generation , pipe smoking goes back to 1910 in my family , my great grandfather 👴 used to smoke pipe , and they lived healthy and a prosperous life .
My mom is 78 and when I sit with her while I'm smoking my pipe or even filling it , she would say your grandfather did this and that too. From 1995 when laws were been made on where to smoke and become a so called bad habit even our preachers and people of the church should smoke pipe , I'm talking about the things that happen in S.A and if you did not smoke you were not a man who cared for the land , 95 percent of farmers smoked some type of a tobacco product
and we were proud . The Keyser pipe was made for the farmers of S.A which is a London based company pipe . I can speak on this topic for hours because of the intense research I've done on pipe smoking in MY country , the pros and cons 😅 Greetings and cheers 🍻 , God bless 🙌 and enjoy piping from a fellow pipe smoker in south africa 🇿🇦 ❤️

People have generally been accepting in my experience. Any situation where I might have lit up a cigarillo a couple years ago, I can start up a pipe instead and any comments I get about it will be friendly and playful. Much the same as when I was mostly smoking cigars. I had a boss who was a pastor that always told my colleagues who smoked cigarettes that they should quit, but when asked why he never said much to me he replied that cigars are different. Picking up the pipe has been more of the same. In fact a lady friend who objected to my cigar smoking was more open to my pipe smoking.
The only negative interaction I had about it was from some random stranger who passed me in a roundabout and questioned why I was smoking a pipe while driving. Which is wierd because if you have a candle or pipe lighter handy smoking a pipe is safer to do while driving than smoking a cigarette. And people smoke cigarettes all the time.

only been pipe smoking for a year. I'm a regular cigar smoker though. Either way it's hard in California haha ..pipes seem to be a little more acceptable since aromatics smell better to most people. I like them because I can set it down and continue smoking later (ex. at work) and the fact pipes look cool and classy lol

Very fortunate that only my doctor tries to get me to stop pipe smoking. Have instructed her that it is not cigarette tobacco, and I don't inhale very often. Also fortunate that the nurse I'm dating now...her late husband was a pipe smoker. I refuse to smoke in her home or when we are in her vehicle. She will allow, and enjoys the aroma of pipe tobacco. Just me trying to be courteous to everyone. I do smoke when we are at my house or we are in my vehicle. Pipe smoking is a very relaxing to me and does help me from abusing other substances such as alcohol.

Big fan of your content. You put this video out the same day I got my pipe and tobacco. The first night I smoked my pipe my wife blasted me about 1 Corinthians, I'm gonna get cancer, how disgusting it is, saying it's the exact same thing as smoking. She told me she's never gonna kiss me again if I keep smoking. I appreciate the fact that you are a pastor and I can use your examples of grace to try to get through this issue with my wife. I believe this video was a divine appointment to help me get through this gracefully. Any more advice on how to calm a quarrelsome wife would be appreciated. Keep up the good work. God bless brother.

Personally I don't smoke around people. So nobody knows. I don't tell folks at church I enjoy pipe tobacco. So it is a private relaxing time for me. I have been smoking about a year and a half. Most of my life I didn't use it and most of my life is over I will not live as long as I have lived. So I enjoy the taste and reflecting on my day or think about things I need to do tomorrow.
I enjoy your talks and I saw you on the pipe cottage.

Hiyas Wilson, a great topic for thoughtful discussion. I definitely do not flaunt my pipe smoking. I don't hide it either, I am comfortable with my decision to be a committed piper. I too carefully watch what I eat and I exercise daily. Constant, uncontrollable high levels of stress and anxiety are far more dangerous to one's physical and mental well being in my humble opinion. ¡Moderation in all things! Malcolm Guite just posted a wonderful video on pipe smoking that I highly recommend.
A great chat my friend, thank you.

I saw a copy of a S. Renihan book in one of your thumbnails and just wanted to stop by and say I've been enjoying your videos the last few weeks as I've jumped back into smoking my pipe after a break. I'm a 1689 Federalist and especially enjoy seeing ways you sneak different books into the videos/thumbnails.
I'm guessing you've seen C.S. Lewis' quote on the joys of working through a bit of tough theology with a pipe in your teeth and a pencil in your hand. It's one of my favorites.

People don't shame me for riding snowmobiles or dirt bikes or any other high risk hobby... but these things are way more likely to kill me than a pipe... I don't think pipe smoking is 100% safe of course, but people's reaction to these things is completely emotionally compromised and has nothing to do with facts. They just have been brainwashed into thinking tobacco is all bad.

Thank you for your practical wisdom about pipe smoking .. perhaps you could help me with something that, as a Christian, I've been asking myself, namely .. Is the immense enjoyment I get from smoking a great tobacco out of a great pipe - a gift from God? .. Is it a divine blessing upon me and upon my family, friends and world? .. and, if it is .. should I be bowing in prayer and giving thanks every time I am about to light my pipe? .. Do you give thanks before you light your pipes?
Many thanks for your continuing gentle guidance. - seraphim

Great discussion. Thank you! Sometimes its helpful to do the research. So, weight is an independent risk factor and smoking is a vaso-constrictor. Those are both facts. That said, eating fatty pulled pork is unhealthy. Too much dark chocolate has issues, and too much milk chocolate has other issues. Wine is tasty and so is beer, but there are downsides. So, you know, life is to be lived in balance.
I smoke one to two pipes a day. This is statistically far less harmful than the average pack of cigarettes. We don’t tend to inhale. We tend to be welcomed when people are around us - that’s either an interesting latakia-forward blend, or a cozy aromatic. Is smoking one or two pipefulls a day harmful? Sure. Maybe. So is anxiety. So is a lot of eating in America.
I went to a major theological seminary, graduated with a M.Div. and was a pastor for 24 years. I am confused about how the Bible enters into any discussion of tobacco use. Why do we get so out of balance? The judgment of other people is killing us. The people who say ‘should’ or ‘ought’ all the time, who speak ‘for’ God or the universe.
This is always an issue of boundaries. People with loose boundaries who somehow think they get to speak to someone else about stuff that is not in their lane.
    I appreciate the video.

Kinda funny to hear ya say that hamburgers are bad for you, that you don’t have to be a doctor to know that hamburgers aren’t good for your health.
I’m 43. I was a vegan/vegetarian for 12 years, and only started eating meat again around age 38. When vegetarian, I ate very healthy - salads, lots of veggies, etc. Not much of the processed garbage. Now, I eat high-quality grass-fed beef, and I’ve never felt better in my life. Any physical issue I had before has disappeared. My cholesterol (and other health factors) is just about as good as could be. My siblings and father (all vegetarian), on the other hand, have high cholesterol and blood pressure issues. I don’t buy the “beef is bad” argument for a second. 😊

They’ve done something very similar to me when I was engaged to someone they didn’t approve of. Well done sir.
Concerning 1Cor. 6:19, I've had that one brought up often - usually for anything that someone else is doing that they don't like. 😁 As I was told by one of my teachers many years ago: The first 3 rules of Biblical interpretation are: Context, Context, and Context.
So when Paul brings up the subject of our body being a temple of the Holy Spirit, what is the context of that statement? It's the idea of a believer being in a sexual relationship with a non believer outside of marriage (In this case, a prostitute). And how that relationship is actually
attempting to bring the very Spirit of God into an unholy alliance if you will.
And what does he say before that?
"12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 Food is for the stomach and the stomach is for food, but God will do away with both of them. Yet the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord is for the body."
That verse that they so often quote is very specific in it's application.
And it shouldn't be used like a bludgeon to enforce their own Pharisaic prejudices. But they do...
Anyway, God bless you and yours.

I think Christians in general are very confused about law and gospel, and Christian liberty. I know I sure was until I began to be reformed.
