Trying to learn different kinds of tobacco, and ive been seenig so many confusing videos about tobacco varieties these days. Yours is simple and to the point. Thanks!
I was wondering when I would find a video like this! I was curious to learn the different leaves and what their individual characteristics are. Thank you!
@@FlatCapPiper appreciate you offering to help, just started my first grow td. Looking forward to see what happens. I'm trying to grow yellow twist bud, cherry red, xanthi, bafra, and shirazi. I hope to have a oriental heavy "traditional bulkan" style blend of ciggarette/pipe tobacco. Any sort of tips for a first time grower you might have would be appreciated, otherwise I'm just playing the waiting game on my seeds to sprout rn.
What an exciting adventure! Growing your own will be a learning experience for sure. You have to be patient throughout the whole process and don’t get discouraged. While you wait for your seeds to sprout I would look for either videos on RUclips or information on google about soil and temperature control that best suits the orientals that you are trying to grow. If you are doing this enclosed inside then there is less to worry about pests but if you are growing outside then I would read up on that so that you can recognize the pest before it destroys your tobacco. Read up on Aphids, tobacco budworms, and tobacco flea beetles to name a few.
@@FlatCapPiper I've been sprouting them in my garage in Florida and they've been starting to sprout on day 2 so I don't think any complaints on the soil temp. As for pests that's very smart I should look into it more as I'm going to try organic. But so far it's day 3 and all 5 varieties have started growing little roots.
Good video just wanna add that Virginia and Burley also can get flavored (but not too much like Cavendish), there are tobaccos that have flavors on them
I’m glad you were able to find the information useful. Thanks! I have a series of beginner videos that prepared in the back burner but I just haven’t had the time to put them together and make sure they are clear and concise. Maybe in the future, I’ll will do some more. Thanks again for stopping by.
Excellent...❗👍 I've been waiting for such an educative video on different types of tobacco , and tastes... Now I have a question... What does Cavendish mean in terms of taste / flavour... Because I have a liking for the "Borkhum-Riff Cherry Cavendish" tobacco...👍
Cavendish is not any particular flavor. It is a process. That process makes it easy to add flavors to the tobacco blend so usually that is when a topping is added. This topping can be anything from rum, vanilla, fruits, etc.
This is so great, FlatCapPiper! Question: G&H Black Irish X is one of my favorite tobaccos. Is that the Dark Fired Kentucky or, what was the process with making that?
There is really no mention of Dark Fired Kentucky in the components.. The filler for Black Irish X is predominantly dark fired Virginia leaf with the addition of a small percentage of dark air cured Indian leaf. From what I have researched they are mostly made with Virginia leaf and some mention of burley. The longer stoving process in the black twist takes some of the nicotine out so the brown twist has more nicotine content. Most people either like or dislike that the black has a burned taste to it. I hope that helps answer your question and please ask away if you have any other questions. I’m here to help.
In the case of black Cavendish, it’s the process it goes through of using heat, steam, and pressure. Sometimes toppings are added also that contain sugar.
I’m glad you found it useful. I did it with the thought that I would have like something like this when I started pipe smoking to understand it better. I wish I could make it available to all the new pipe smokers somehow. I think they would enjoy the hobby even more. Thanks again for you encouraging comment. It gives me motivation to continue doing this type of videos.
Thank you for the beautiful and simple explanation... I have a question: What is the tobacco used in cigars? Is it burley? Also, what do you recommend for pipe tobacco that smells like a cigar? Thank you so much
Cigar leaf has more variety in taste and smells than burley leaf. They are completely different leaves with the biggest similarity in that they are both Air-cured. Pipe Tobaccos that smell just like a cigar is hard as the cigar leaf adds to the smokiness but gets overtaken by the pipe tobacco when it comes to the aroma. Try Briarworks’ Country Lawyer or C&D Habana Daydream. Also the Warped series uses cigar leaves in the blend but they won’t smell like a cigar.
@@FlatCapPiper Thank you for your response.. I am a cigar smoker and I enjoy smoking them.. and pipe tobacco is a new adventure that I would like to try and of course I have many questions 😁 It will benefit me and you on the channel if there is a special video and it will also benefit the viewers too 👍🏻
@borashidh6743 You are absolutely correct. Keep the questions coming and perhaps I can make a series of video covering all your questions . If you have questions that means someone else probably has the same questions. I would love to help out in what I can.
You can use any tobacco that you like for churchwarden pipes. Same with the cut. Smaller cuts like “ready rub”, “ribbon”, and “cube” are easy to pack and burn. If you are a beginner, I would start with those. If you want an easy blend, try Carter Hall.
@@arharh4806 Here is a simple list from lowest to highest: Latakia, Black Cavendish, Orientals, Virginia, Burleys, Dark Fired Kentucky, Rustica. Note: The nicotine content of tobacco can vary depending on the variety, growing location, and leaf position.
I briefly mentioned them on the bottom of the chart but I wanted to keep the video short. Cigar leaves would need their own video as there are many types within the plant itself, soil they are planted, etc. There are several blends like the “Warped” series that uses cigar leaves. I consider them condiments leaves because so far the pipe tobacco blends that have used them have been in that fashion. Hope that helps.
Flakes: a type of tobacco cut. They press the tobacco into a big rectangular block and then slice it into thin flakes. See my video on the Sutliff factory tour. Vapers: Means having Virginia and Perique. Aromatics: Any tobacco with added flavoring. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions or ideas for me to do another video that explains another aspect of the piping hobby. Thanks again for your comments.
@@Zblak100 There is a method to “break it in” but I would say just smoke it and have fun. If you can smoke it all the way down that would be the best to build an even “cake” on the walls. I would not think about it too much just enjoy the journey and the pipe will eventually be perfect.
Try something like plum pudding from Seattle Pipe Club or something with black cavendish. Share with me the blends that you have tried so far and maybe I can help you find something different. If you try blends that are mostly Burley then yes they will be similar to cigarettes.
