- How to set up a laptop. Keeping a clean and simple desktop
Formatting/Fresh Install:
- I do the install in offline mode (without internet) so I don't have to log in with a Microsoft account.
- I turn off Cortana, history and disable all the Microsoft fluff.
Apps:
- I remove every app I can except for Media Codecs (for video editing)
- Don't remove Cortana, MS Store, or Windows defender with 3rd party apps. That'll break stuff.
- I use Ninite.com to get an installer package. It's clean and free of malware/bloatare
- I don't bother with 3rd party virus Apps. Most of them are awful.
Centering Taskbar:
- I turn off the search bar, Cortana and the task view buttons.
- When you center the app icons, keep in mind that open apps will add to the tail end of it.
Rainmeter: (rainmeter.net)
- The skin I use is Mond. And I use my own font with it.
- The ones with heavy animations tend to use a ton of resources. Avoid those if you need to keep it light.

I really appreciate this video. i've been mainly using a Linux/OSX computer for the past few years. And recently went back to windows for VR stuff. For anyone looking for Dave's Mond font, he hasn't shared it, but I find that Montserrat (available from Google fonts) gives a pretty good approximation with either the Medium or Semibold variant.

I'm glad I watched this video. I swear to God I never knew about the background apps. You live and you learn.
After I turned off all of them except 3 useful ones, Chrome was so damn fast.
Everything else was nice and clean, but the background apps man, damn, these companies are cunning.

Yes but the "need for it" is greatly diminished to the point I'd say its no longer necessary. SSDs removed a lot of the need.

I basically use IObit Uninstaller for my uninstallation software.

I got mine preinstalled in a new pretty-recent laptop. I uninstall it just like other software. Pick the obvious right choices. It isn't hard to remove at all.

For centering taskbar and making it transparent, taskbarx is the way to go. Doesnt impact performance, opens at startup, automatically adjusts your taskbar so that its always centered no matter how many apps are open
This is actually really cool! I Totally could not remember Ninite the other day when I was on Laptop number 3 to install stuff (Returned my new Blade 15 for a Blade 14).

I think its better to use taskbarx, it automatically centers the taskbar, and you can get it for free in githu or something like 1 buck at microsoft store

yeah it sure helps A LOT. My laptop has a mechanical hard drive and my PC has an SSD and my laptop feels just as fast as my PC after all the tweaks

Thanks for sharing. Just saw this video now. Just as relevant now as it was when you made it two years ago. I have my own style, using RocketDock, and I have used Rainmeter in the past, but always good to see other people's methods.
I center my taskbar as well, but I've always used Taskbar X. Rainmeter for the day of the week, GPU and CPU usage widgets, both very minimal and a super clean wallpaper to go with it. Never liked icons on the desktop, and like Dave said, if I need something, I will know where they are.

You need if you want that it centres it automatically.
@@azizinanc yep. The new windows 🪟 version centers it, but the transparency is still not as good, it's more glassy than transparent. I still use taskbar x for just that.

does using rainmeter for simple stuff like this increase lags and slow down a laptop? especially while gaming and stuff (yes i use a laptop for games, yes im broke)
@@saachikanchan6276 ive got a gaming laptop too, nothing wrong with that haha. and no it does not slow it down, i have stopped using rainmeter now (I want the desktop so clean i dont want anything on any of my screens) and just use wallpaper engine, but there were no performance issues with any of the widgets, ever. Maybe if you like having a stack of widgets, it might affect your fps a bit but if its just weather stuff, or SSD, or CPU GPU temp, it doesnt really affect performance.

Yeah been using a centred task bar for a while now, having it on the left just isn't usable on super ultrawides haha

Dave mentioning Rainmeter brought me flashbacks of me trying to make my Windows 7 laptop look like Windows 8.

Love this. Turns out I was on the right track back in the days when I was a windows user, Same steps.. format, Nanite, disable unneeded services. I turned into Linux user about 12 years ago to save all these hassles but I still do these for my friends and families.
