I think it was 2008 when I first discovered Wintersun. I downloaded some random melodic death metal compilation of songs so I can have background music when playing WoW. Lo and behold I was questing through wintery Dun Morogh when in my gaming daze I was struck by the sheer power, melodies and atmosphere of this one song that kinda sounded like something off Ensiferum to my ears but on a whole different level. Checked out the playlist and listened to the whole Wintersun 2004 album non stop that day. I was hooked for life.
Thats how we found Ensiferum XD my buddy who found them thought I was being prejudice by saying the vocalist of Ensiferum sounds a lot like Wintersun, he told me "not all metal vocalists sound the same". Then I looked up who was in the bands and found out I was right 😎Wrath of the Lich King just came out
It is a shame the album was split. But it was understandable due to the time it was taking. It was great fun to listen to the whole Time saga with Time I 2.0. It feels very complete then!
Oh for sure! Just imagine if they thought of the crowd funding before Time I was released ;D I feel we would have a lot more material out right now plus Time as a whole
Actually I think it's OK that Time was split into two albums. To me, both have a distinct identity and they are just different albums. Playing Time I 2.0 and Time II back to back made me realize that. Jari has been saying in recent interviews that he's focussing on getting a new album finished and it's advancing well so I'm hoping for a 2026 release.
@@forlornhope_ "something so megalomanic that it would explode... everything!" (That's what he said was the vision of Wintersun's second album called Time)
Wow, it's interesting how different peoples tastes can be. My biggest issue with this album is the drum sound. I don't like it at all. The snare doesn't even sound like a real drum. But hey, we all can't like everything!
Exactly! Already noticed the terrible snare drum sound in the samples months ago. Can't understand how this production took years, and yet have a terrible, terrible snare drum...
@@kevinvanrillaer5965 To be honest Wintersun has never had a great drum sound. Overproduced snare + bassdrum and you can't really hear the symbals at all. I still love their music, but as a drum nerd it makes me sad the drums being undervalued.
I did, I kind of say it in the video, but it didn't quite hit the same haha. Just my personal opinion, lots of people will probably disagree with me, but thats a good thing (:
Nice review! If I remember correctly, Jari is working with multiple WS albums right now. So maybe we won’t have to wait that long for the next one. Maybe. 😅
My expectations were unreasonably high and I think for the most part it met the expectations but overall not quite. It's still a stellar album and I'm very addicted to it.
Don't you think the hyping is our problem and not his? In the last 12 years since time 1 , he released forest seasons and was touring for 3 years. He stopped mixing time 2 in 2014.
Just discovered your channel! nice review! Don't quote me on that but i believe Jari said that he was removing Time 1.5(the re-mixed version from The Forest Package) since he re-mixed Time I again on the same mix as Time II so we could hear it with the same quality, as it was intended to be. So we will be able to experience it as a complete package!
@@pierre-etiennedesbiens9679 Thank you very much :) yes he did say that, I was just meaning it being all released the same day for the first time ever. That would have been an amazing experiance haha
Interesting that you find the drums to be "the shining instrument" on this album. Seems like common consensus is that the drums are too loud, the snare sounds awful and the vocals are buried in the mix. I think this album is a 10/10 if it weren't for the drums and low vocals.
No common consesus whatsoever, maybe in some spaces, but its the usual difference in preferences/opinion. Funny how with NW fans complain they cant hear kai's drumming (and the guitar of Emppu) (well) enough yet witrh Wintersun the complaint is that Kai is TOO prominent and the drums and guitars drown out any orchestrations etc.
I should look up more reviews. Tbh I have not listened to any. I am listening to the song on Sennheiser's wireless headphones and V-Moda M-100's and the drums sound AMAZING to me haha
@@TerranigmaQuintet There are some segments where drums seem to be too prominent, specially in the remastered Time 1 version. Snare & bass drum sounds plastic, clicky. Jari is a fking genius, but maybe his ears feel it different? I really dont understand

I'm not even the biggest melodic death metal fan but damn those The Way of the Fire and Storm sound good. Silver Leaves my #1 though, like you said, it took crown from Loneliness & Land of Snow and Sorrow. I want this song to be played at my funeral. I think Wintersun said in 2021 they are working on 4 albums simultaneously and one is 75 % complete. So yeah, fingers crossed we will be seeing another album before the end of decade. I'm in no rush though, better to be good than mediocrity
Pardon my ignorance - why/how did Fields of Snow prevent Time from being released as one large album? Was it the overall run length? I thought the only reason Time 2 got delayed was because Jari wasn't happy with the mixing on the tracks?
Haha I think you misunderstood, it wasn't Fields of Snow that caused this, we just wouldn't have gotten that song if it was all released as Time. Jari only wrote that song after the split since Time II did not have an intro
From my point of view Jari is the only one to blame when it comes to Time I & II controversies. He had the creative block of a century, but always tried to dodge responsibility (ridiculous hardware limitation excuses, crowdfunding miscommunications etc. ). It's amazing he managed to slay his inner demons and Time II is clear indicator man still has what it takes.. But in the end price was very high. Wintersun is a zombie band and its highly likely we will never see Jari, Teemu, Jukka and Kai perform live together. What a shame that would be! Dude had best heavy guitarist, bassist and drummer Finland has to offer in one band. They really had potential to be something big. It's sad more than anything.
I have seen them live twice now with all of them, so I am not sure what you mean. I am not sure he had creative block, and from his explanation it was a combination of not being able to scrub tracks all at once live with the limited cpu power, and Nuclear blast forcing his hand (which contractually they had a right to do). We will have to see what the future holds though (:
Agree 100% that biggest flaw of Time II ”album” is that it forced into being a stand alone album. I am pretty sure that Jari will be making a ”complete” Time-album in the future. Probably with a third crowdfunder.
Mixing of the public release (not package) is really bad. I felt like Jari was drowning in a maelstrom of drums and sound in general, it was tiresome! Theres only four tracks on this album in my opinion. Disappointed i am!😕
