    Hey Dan thank you for the "tour" of the newest batch of fish. What a great variety to choose from. Those killifish are stunning. I can see how easy it would be to get yourself into breeding them. Haha I would have to get some of each of them, and then I would be in a baby fry overload. WHEW. It would be like my trip through wonderland with guppies. LMBO. 😆. Hey when you say "annual killifish" does that mean they're the ones that live only a year?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  10 месяцев назад

      They are called annual because in nature their habitat dries up every year (twice a year for some species), and they reappear when it rains. I think the term was brought over from horticulture. In the aquarium, they can live about twice their natural life span...maybe more. But they are probably not going to last much more than 2 years...2.5 year would be ancient for these fish.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  10 месяцев назад

      Yep. That's the problem with common/market names. There are multiple names for the same fish and it can get confusing. Personally, I wouldn't call them that...I think a red wag is a pretty specific looking fish. But once we get out of the realm of scientific names, its pretty much a free-for-all when it comes to nameing.

    How many Betta Simorum could be kept in a 28 gallon bowfront together?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  10 месяцев назад

      Up to a dozen or so. In fact, with this species, I think the more the merrier. We've had a big group in a 40 breeder for quite a while, and they get along famously. I think the large group prevents aggression issues.

    There's nothing wrong with small, young fish. It means you get to keep them around for just that much longer. Seems like a pretty good deal to me!
    Can't wait until we get into better weather. There's all kinds of things on the site that I want, but if they get sent now, they will arrive in a frozen block of ice, even if a heat pack is included. Wyoming is a neighbouring state, but somehow it always gets colder here. In fact, the last few day it's been colder here than it is in Anchorage, Alaska.
    I am in such great agreement about Killifish. Problem is, I fear I might end up killing the killifish. I'm just not sure enough of my abilities I guess.

    Can you share your preliminary treatment regime with betta smaragdina? Or is the assumption that when you order online they are usually already treated for parasites etc.?

    • @DansFish

    Native American fish tend not to appeal to the majority of US aquarists, and this phenomenon was remarked upon as far back as the1970s, when I started my fishkeeping. On the other hand, German aquarists in particular treat sunfishes and various American cyprinids as treasured exotica, and have done again since the 1970s.
    Right now, Elassoma species in particular command premium prices in the German market, and you'll find that various Lepomis species are almost as prized as Mbuna from Lake Malawi.
    But the true holy grail of North American fishes in the German market are Cyprinodon pupfishes. Those will change hands for several hundred Euros a pop, especially the really rate ones. Turn up at a German fish show with a breeding pair of Comanche Spring Pupfishes, and people will literally throw money at you.
