The amount of sheer joy passing in and between these two extraordinary musicians is palpable and inspiring!!! THIS is the Jaco I knew as a child, my best friend from 4th--7th grade.
Greetings! I am a Brazilian admirer of Jaco, I have few stories about Jaco, because unfortunately he died prematurely. I love his way of playing, as he has inspired bass players from all over the world to this day. Please tell me about the moments of friendship you had with Pastorius, did you have the opportunity to meet him when Jaco was an adult?
A truly amazing clip. I came here from a Peggy Lee and Toots video...clicked on the thumbnail and was totally blown away. Toots, I happily, know something of him. Until 9 minutes and 9 seconds ago, I was not familiar with Mr. Pastorius and his muscianship, but may have heard him and was not aware of him by name. In any event, The young man in this video, sort of knows his way around a bass guitar(said in jest, with high, high respect). Jaco smiling as noted by others...who could not smile when in the company of that smiling, bespectacled, humble., harmonica, playing gift from God. Thank you Toots, and thank you Jaco. Jaco, I'm 73 and "discovered" and became an instant fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn a few years ago, after he had passed away. I just "discovered " you and became an instant fan. Man, my timing sucks:). Thank you gentlemen, for what you left behind and rest in peace.
Greatest bass player ever and a greatest chrom player ever playing together. I thought I had seen every video of Jaco on youtube from the past few years, but somehow I must've missed this one. And this one is truly a gem.
When Jaco was himself he did on four what guys today struggle to do on 6. As for Toots - nothing but net🙌🏾 Both were geniuses. Their mastery in music lives on!
It amazes me every time I watch this clip. For me one of the most intense and valuable improvisations. And it is so good to see a smiling Jaco. I am quite sure Toots Thielemans had a huge positive influence on Jaco's well being.
Yea, I saw them in Osaka on their Big Band Tour and it was magical, amazing chemistry and energy between the two. Toots thanked Jako for inviting him on the tour and It was kind of ok until Toots came out and sat on a stool and rocked the placed. After that it was 33 guys ripping their best solos all night and the crowd went wild...and Toots was the surprise star of the show...
@@bpetersson5024 its impossible not to love Toots!!! I mean the guy is pure love for music and his fellow musicians, love how he throws a kiss to Jako on stage (not sure if it was in Montreux?)
Jaco is super cute in this video. He smiles his heart out. For me it looks like becuase he met a person who cherishes his talent and music! :) Great Ensemble.
+Jennifer Vincent happy a piece like this really demonstrates his ability to arrange. Jaco was a master arranger and it becomes easier to see why his family, his original choice of instrument all contribute to as masterful a player, a composer and an arranger, let alone one of the most innovative players in the genre of jazz, as Gil Evans or Duke Ellington. Miles for that matter. Man alive i screwed up my thumb playing this this morning. you know when you hit 50 and you jump on the kit without lots of warm up you can hurt yourself quite bad. all these old guys who still tour, I don't where they get the energy. I have to start warming up at 10AM if I want to play jazz by 2 in the afternoon. But with all that warm up you get other problems like carpal tunnel which is deadly to an instrumentalist as my self. I play some guitar and piano my self. Good to see Jaco has nice young people adore him for his playing. I will never forget the morning I was headed off to school and I heard that he had died the night before. Well to my generation, in a strange sort of way that was like our Hendrix dying. OK don't hate me for saying that anybody. It is a contextual thing. When I arrived at school some of my friends were quite glum about the whole thing. I guess that is the considered difference between a fan and a colleague. He does look happy though doesn't he?
+Bella, Yes he met somebody that cherished him... and that one amazing thing about Toots, you truly get the feeling that he loves and cherishes everybody. He is an amazing person to "experience", incredibly kind too meet, shining of love and somehow very graceful... Them meeting must surely have been a gift for both :-D
cross train vato. train you supporting muscles. all your muscles. ride a bike. walk. eat better. don't sit for hours in front of the tube. get up frequently and stretch from any sitting "activity" or in front of your kit. lots of breaks. you lose energy flow getting old because everything turns stiff and hard. if you want to keep playing, you have to stay loose and relaxed. yoga. all that. you know what you need to do . just do it. i am 62 and still playing 4 hour solo piano/vocal gigs, 5, 6 nights per week, I am exhausted by it, but i can still do it cuz i eat right, stretch, exercise. good luck. steve gadd is still playing in his 70's because he is taking care of his whole self.
Wow. After years of listening to this song off the Invitation album I finally got to see footage of Jaco & Toots (and Band) performing it. This might sound silly but I was really touched when Toots kissed Jaco on the cheek (7.13). It's almost like he really loved doing the duet with Jaco and was thanking him...
This kind thing can only happen when you have reached the top of your playing ability & humor & fun is added to the mix, BUT then you've got to have a long understanding of jazz to get it. AWESOME musicians having fun with music & all is at peace with the world.
Great piece of jazz history showing two of the greats at work. This kind of "conversational" improvisation is common in jazz. I think it's interesting that there seemed to be a few times where Toots would "say" something and Jaco was "at a loss for words". As awesome as Jaco was, he couldn't keep up with Toots. I'm not taking about speed. I'm talking about complexity. I would love to see Jaco play with Vic Wooten.
I would love to know what toots said into jacos ear. I would like to think it was something like ...' this is the dogs bollocks'. Pure joy from toots when the band kicks in. He knew this was the work of a genius.
The Word of Mouth band. It was named after his 2nd solo album. Existed for about 4 years after he left Weather Report. The double album 'Twins' or 'Invitation' is possibly the best example of their music.
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looked like the band got up this chart saying,...."oh, hey, they've gone on to Sophisticated Lady. Get it up. Hurry!"
Toots...what else is there to say. He sang through a mouth harp. Simple, anyone can do it but just Toots did it so you knew from the first note what was coming at you and from whom.
"I do not like the harp for the almost ever sqeaking sound" You obviously haven't heard many good harmonica players. Also, they generally refer to the chromatic harmonica as a "harmonica". They refer to the smaller diatonic harmonica as a "harp" when playing blues or pop/rock music. Toots was definitely a "harmonica" player.
@Pastirulo that's a bold statement. He was great on the fretless, but there r (were) others. Like Charles Mingus, Stanley Clarke etc. I'll just leave u with those 2 to think about.
Life is short, art is long...as stated, the joy of music.
Toots and Jaco had the most beautiful bromance in jazz ❤️
Toots blows kisses to Jaco.
This is a concert clip to come back to finding what we used to look for in concerts....this has it all!!
The amount of sheer joy passing in and between these two extraordinary musicians is palpable and inspiring!!! THIS is the Jaco I knew as a child, my best friend from 4th--7th grade.

Shaddup ya boring arsehole
RIP Toots, thanks for all the decades of beautiful music you gave us. Hugs to Jaco, he is still sorely missed.
Two geniuses sharing beauty with the universe...

Jaco and Toots together on one stage, what more could a fan ask for?
It's perfect.
It amazes me every time I watch this clip. For me one of the most intense and valuable improvisations. And it is so good to see a smiling Jaco. I am quite sure Toots Thielemans had a huge positive influence on Jaco's well being.
For as long as the tour lasted, I'm afraid...
how i mss Jaco.
@Gordon Rayan You are either in the wrong relationship or have too much time on your hands, I hope for you it’s the latter!

L'amitié des deux est touchante, magnifique !

When you meet like-minded people you become happy because they understand where you come from and what you are!

Amazing and touching !
There is nothing like these two together!
This is like everything I've ever wanted in my life.
Two legends gathered in great classic! This is music!
Jaco looks so happy here. That's nice to see. :)

AWESOME musicians having fun with music & all is at peace with the world.
A set of consistent communication miracles of the best musical kind. Bravo!
Two masters, more than any two ears deserve to hear at the same time. Magnifico!
It's the absolute best their sounds mix perfectly.
I wish I got to meet them in person, or even see them perform... why was I born in the 90s...
So you can change the world now!
R.I.P. Toots...thank you for the music
R.I.P. Toots -
and the same for Mister Pastorius - both are missed!
Saw Toots in Chg. at the Down Beat. He actually played to me--flirting!!! I was thrilled. This was MANY yrs. ago.
Classy dude is Thieleman, big ears and an even bigger heart
Two Masters of their respective instruments.
The interpersonal as well as musical interplay between them is priceless

The joy and musicianship! Jaco what happened to you?
What a pairing. They are both clearly enjoying this performance and that's so great to witness. Thank you for sharing this. Am so glad it popped up.
R.I.P. Toots!
So musical video. :)
This dialog is awesome. :)
At 6:50 starts one of the most beautiful moments of Jaco's recordings. I usually see it repeatedly...
Two of the coolest, together again, tho never apart....
How is it even possible to play a harmonica like that!!?? Toots is as much a god on his instrument as Jaco was on the bass. Unbelievable.
The Musician was responsible for popularizing the chromatic harmonica and would be 100 years old this Friday, April 29, 2022. Congratulations Toots!
This is so fucking beautiful.
We have got this forever!
Sophisticated Lady, has a name....NINA, unique, wordefull.
Jazz, always speaks last and best! Sort of a summation of things before by a professor of the life course.

best video description ever.
Two departed legends.RIP gentlemen.
Marvelous.
Jaco had a big band?
I never knew that... and the writing for them was equal to the virtuosity of Toots and Jaco out front.
The Word of Mouth band. It was named after his 2nd solo album. Existed for about 4 years after he left Weather Report. The double album 'Twins' or 'Invitation' is possibly the best example of their music.
...or the Birthday Concert.
Thanks wonderful performance video. I subscribed :)
Pianist Kiyoshi from Japan.
Looked like it was a piece of true jazz history...........
The smiles!!
7:46 - Great lick, and that face!!
Toots plays a late night, walk home song, clear skies, great talent tomorrows.
@teleringendevermaeck HA HA HA!! hilarious response. Took the words right out of my mouth.
Toots and Jaco the real deal!!!
Was thinking the same thing right when I heard that lick!!
God, what artists!
muchísimas gracias
Sad news has arrived. RIP Toots.....
jaco and toots in heaven
this IS Sophisticated Lady. Head starts at 2.20'...
Geweldig Toots.... pracht muziek!
Maybe I'm reading it wrong but it looked like the band got up this chart saying,...."oh, hey, they've gone on to Sophisticated Lady. Get it up. Hurry!"
I love @ 2:36 when you see all the other musicians turning pages probably thinking ... Where the hell are they?
FLUTUANTE !!!
Yes. As impressive as Jaco was (R.I.P.), Toots was the teacher here.
Toots...what else is there to say. He sang through a mouth harp. Simple, anyone can do it but just Toots did it so you knew from the first note what was coming at you and from whom.
Instantly recognizable
now they enchant the paradise…
wow and then some!!
World of Mouth World Tour this Concert
magnifical !
I am so glad I discovered Toots. Better late... Jaco is, of course, the boss of bass

waht a bassplayer!!
lovely incorporated tuning on stage.. 5:14 ;)
He dropped the E string earlier in the solo - and, yes, tuned it back rather artistically)
Its a fun technique though. Banjo players learn it pretty early on as one of the big standards relies on it.
@Pastirulo that's a bold statement. He was great on the fretless, but there r (were) others. Like Charles Mingus, Stanley Clarke etc. I'll just leave u with those 2 to think about.
it's great.
IT IS A TOOTS HARMONICA RENDERING WITHOUT ANY FEELING ONLY TO SATISFY ROCK, REGGAETON, AND OTHER SHIT MUSIC LOVERS..
Troll
Nic, how can I do that when you are not here?
Sin palabras...
weather report....eternal sunshine
Ah wow ..........
