    I remember the first time I heard Jaco. I was in a chat room on AOL bragging about how Cliff Burton was the god of bass. This guy said "Man, haven't you heard of Jaco Pastorius or Victor Wooten?" That was the day I was introduced to Jazz and funk bass. That dude changed my life.

    @bigbadbeethoven Jaco was my best friend in elementary school, and I was in his first band (1964). He would have LOVED to hear your comment, as 'groove' was crucial to him both in the music he made and the music he listened to. I say thank you for him.,

    Jaco music will always have a way of lifting the spirits,
    Relieve stress, and make you wanna go dance on the sidewalk with your headphones on---- the personality in his playing has never gotten old to me- truly one of the greats.

    "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" was written by Joe Zawinul when he was in Cannonball's band, and it sounds like what you're supposed to say when you're faced with adversity: MERCY, MERCY, MERCY!!!
    Jaco's playing evokes a lot of positive emotions here, especially with the "Express Yourself" quotes etc. - so I would say that this piece feels very happy and positive. The original is much more "bluesy" but still positive, if that makes sense. Have a nice day! :)

    I don't care what anybody says, Jaco's playing on this date in November of 1986 is still some of his best shit. You can tell he was feelin good... but not TOO good if you know what I mean. He found an awesome groove on this and quite simply played his ass off.

      tom blake He was pretty seriously mentally ill, and it's a tragedy that he probably could've been just fine if he would've sought appropriate treatment for his illness (and had quality psych treatment been even available in the States back then). Drug and alcohol addictions are rarely ever the problem, they're almost always a symptom of a bigger, less visible problem. You're an antagonistic asshole, I wonder what's wrong with you that creates that symptom?

    • @seeburg10
      @seeburg10 4 года назад +6

      Yeah, people vulture out on the downer stories and *assume* Jaco's playing couldn't have been good/great at the same time his life off the stand was a mess. Why? Billie Holiday still sang beautifully at the end of her troubled junkie life, one of many examples. Fact is aside from a literal handful of bad gigs (and btw I haven't heard of any out-and-out no-shows), Jaco played good on all his gigs and great on most of them.

    Fun hearing The Master jamming on this old standard. I'm assuming this is the bootleg recorded with Brian Melvin and Jon Davis. Would have been awesome to hear him play it with the guy who wrote the song, his old buddy from Weather Report, Joe Zawinul.

      @Punch Down King I agree, but I think Zawinul was impressed deep down and that he felt threatend by Jaco's musicality so that he didn't want to show it. It hurts me that he called Liberty City "some typical high-school big-band bullshit"

    This version was used to highlight Jaco's playing. Also, the man held the groove throughout the entire piece which is the point of every musician. Groove like a bad ma'ama jamma! Grooves are not limited to a section of an instrument and a true musician utilizes every potential sound.

    there have been comments posted on other platforms that disparage Jaco as "Jaco & the Band" (Birdland, Weather Report) his bass playing was incredible. He and Joe were so tight.....I first heard Mercy, Mercy ,Mercy with Cannonball, Nat and Joe....No matter which way you flip it, when musicians are in the groove it is tight and respectful of the others.
