- In this video I show you how I sketch and draw faces. I cover basic concepts and techniques that'll enable you to draw better portraits. For this tutorial I have used Clip Studio Paint but the methods explained in the video apply to any medium, so feel free to use paper and pencil, the iPad Pro & ProCreate or anything else you have!
(Please keep in mind that this video focuses on the technical aspect of drawing faces. I wasn't trying to create a nice and appealing illustration.)

They're my favorite medium because it makes the pieces I do go by so much faster. I can finish a portrait piece in 3 hours in oils vs the 9 it takes in the medium i use most often (colored pencils)

I’ve been an artist all my life, and even with all my knowledge, talent and skill, when i draw people it’s hit or miss, either I draw the face realistically the first time and I love it, or I cry and get frustrated and redraw for weeks because I can’t get the proportions right. This video helped me draw a portrait I’ve been trying to draw for a month, in an hour. USE THIS EVEN IF YOURE AN INTERMEDIATE/EXPERT AT FACES
I've been an artist all my life too. Even though I love drawing portraits I find it difficult to get right ratio. Art is hard and expensive but it is my identity. Hope I can get better with this video
i personally have a problem with chin. i'll never draw the chin the right way. what helps me personally, is to take a pic of my sketch and then bring it to photoshop and lay it on top of the original reference pic, then i crop out each feature (ear, eyebrow extr) and fix it on top of the reference, until i compose my "second version" of the sketch. that's how i see where my mistakes are and how to improve. sometimes when i ask for critique, people can't see all of the mistakes but with PS you can apply this technique. i mean, i would have never noticed that i had a problem with the chin on each portrait if i didn't use this method lol. hope this helps
I definitely agree with this. I've been drawing since I was 6 (40 now) and even took a multimedia illustrator course in the military and still this tutorial helps out alot. It's always good as artists to stay active in perfecting our craft.

can you do a tutorial on how to color hair? I’ve had a problem with this since the beginning, and I’ve been drawing for 8 years 😂

Look at hair like it's a three dimensional shape. Study some photos where it is clear where the lighting is coming from. I find it easier to go light to dark.
Try doing several drawings that focus on just the hair
Of course I'm not a pro like he is these are just some tips for you until he responds :)
I usually just follow these steps and it turns out fine
-Colour flat with base colour
-Add in darkest shadows
-Add in other, more transparent and faint layers of shadows
-Add sharp then soft highlights
-Smudge and blur a bit, rather unevenly, so it'll look more realistic
Lol with my art style i just draw the shape of the hair and then just draw lines in the hair shape. Then i add a few strands and boom.
Do draw hair you just need to know how to shade with lines thats the easiest way
What i love about this video, you do things that remind me of constructing a face. Paying attention to the distance between the nose an cheek. Looking how shapes intersect. That is something that helps so much. Seeing theses techniques payed out step by step help a lot. Thank You.

hello! i am a self taught artist and i have been watching your videos for a while now! i work really hard on realism and anatomy but when it comes to creating my own art style, nothing good and satisfying comes out, but nor my realism is perfect- but i will keep rewatching your videos to get better, thanks !
Hey! Don't worry too much about your own style. It'll develop automatically over time. I always struggled finding my own style and thought it was the most important thing ever but it's really not. Focus on the fundamentals and learn the basics first. :)
I have the same problem. Looks super easy, but nearly impossible!
Usually i try not to draw in any type of style, I just draw in any way that fits at the moment. But recently I don’t know what I like anymore and I’ve been struggling with drawing anything.
Man, I am sketching so fast and effortlessly after this, I never learned a lot from tutorials, but this one is great!
I used to take 30 minutes to do a sketch (ikr?!), But after this tutorial I am doing sketches in 5 minutes!

@@isisphoebedenc.delsocorro7807 there are some drawing exercises in which you draw in 1,3,5 and 10 minutes you should try to draw them without an eraser it will be difficult in the beginning but the sketches will improve after some time!

After watching this I realized that sketching the guidelines over top of the image is probably a really good way to learn shapes, perspective, and anatomy of the face. Thanks for the video, super helpful!

This was soo helpful for me as a beginner artist, I've always had trouble drawing faces, and this helped me a whole bunch. Throughout this whole thing, I used a different reference photo as I know I tend to just follow what the person, whoever I watch, and copy it. My drawing actually turned out a lot better than I expected it would. Thank you!

I've been sort of scared of tackling portraits for awhile now, and I just wanted to say you video helped me such an insane ammount. I've been an environment artist for awhile now, sticking to less organic things because of the difficulty involved, and literally in 30 minutes i've gotten x10 better. Awesome video my man. Absolute legend.
One thing I’ve found that helps me a lot with drawing just about anything by reference is to look for shapes, triangles, circles, squares etc. . So I look for shapes not only in what I’m drawing but where there is nothing or the bg, so if I draw a face and the hair flows I look for the shapes where there’s no hair in the wind and draw them out.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how wonderfully skilled this person is, people say art can never be perfect, but all I have to do to prove them wrong is pull up this channel. Well done with your fantastic art. I have been working on drawing people for around 4 years now, never really found someone to teach me how to draw in the style I want. I have been struggling with anatomy as well but then I stumbled along your account and I have improved so much, I wouldn’t be at the skill level I am now if it weren’t for you. And one more thing, I am not sure if you already have it, but there is an app called DeviantArt, it is a positive app to post your art, I think you will be quite loved there. (Edit: I was reading the description and you asked for us to comment what we struggle with most, for me it is face shape.)

I've been drawing an designing for about 22 yrs and you this tutorial by far is the best one. You nailed alot of great points that beginners may miss when drawing faces.

Your technique is actually VERY helpful! THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for sharing this video. I have become so frustrated with trying to draw portraits that I stopped drawing completely for a long time. Today, while watching your video, I was able to sketch out a decent looking drawing during my break at work. I am really happy you mentioned how it's easier for you to draw using angular strokes. I discovered I am the same way and it's been disheartening for me to follow along to the many tutorials that use lots and lots of flowy, curvy lines. I can't wait to try out this technique again and again!
I've just started drawing with a pacer and sketchbook, and while I've been learning about proportions through tutorials that talk heavily about guidelines, this helped SO MUCH more - so much so, that the sketch I was working on while watching is by far my favourite of the dozen I've done previously. It looks so much more realistic and similar to the inspiration photo I'm basing the sketch off already, without all the fancy detailing and whatnot... Can't thank you enough on this extensive demonstration, it was incredibly helpful!

@@ericanthonyj hey man I've spent thousands of hours in the pursuit of knowledge and improving so a 1-2+ hour video is no problem.
@@novaboom9920 if you're worried about colors bleeding over you can try using clipping mask. So you make one block out in black (for example the hair), then clip each layer on top of it (color, shading, ect).

Your instructions helped me to recognize certain things about my reference sketching process that I'd settled into and stopped thinking about. For example, I usually draw the whole outline of the eye, nose, or mouth before focusing on the curve of the iris, nostril, or lip. I think your technique may be more useful to help me remember to focus on what I see instead of what I think I know, which has always been something I've tried to do. Thank you!

I’m currently only 17 mins in and I can certainly say this is the best drawing I have ever done. You are always told oh yeah eyes in the centre of the face etc etc but somehow this has been quite easy to follow so far and I’m so happy I found this video!

I've been struggling for so long but the way you went through step by step how to observe and transfer the drawing into lines and shapes by paying attention to distances was super helpful! This is literally how I draw portraits...from the first feature to the last, it the exactly same process I follow. This was so good to watch and realize someone else does things the same way I do. Kinda felt validated...thank you so much!! From locking in the eye brows first to drawing the nose curve to drawing the further eye first ....damn this was so relatable! This trick is actually fucking insane...I've always measured the thing I'm about to draw to the nearby features. I actually never saw it anywhere else but something I just started doing subconsciously over time but since no one has ever written about this in a book or tutorial (so far ) I always felt I'm probably not good enough yet to just eyeball stuff or you know aww people better artists just know how lines flow and shit. But this legit made my day!

A third of the way in you say pick up a pencil. I did and by the 15 minute mark I had caught up and it looked how yours did onscreen. By FAR the best tutorial I've ever watched! 10/10!

I really appreciate that you're not just sketching. The lines you're creating have purpose and you explain it very well in the video! I'm attempting to take myself back to basics to build a stronger foundation and anatomy practice is right up there. This helps greatly and I plan on referencing this quite a bit to remind myself to slow down and utilize landmarks and proper distances on the face.

Thank you so much for this video. This is by far the most useful tips on drawing faces. Other vids on faces usually are pretty vague, don't explain anything, or explaining later/finishing details. Something that has always made it harder to draw faces was never knowing how to approach it, so this really helped!

I'm someone who paints hyper realistic portraits digitally and i want to start painting more stylized portraits. I tried the two methods and to my surprise the second works better for me. Just the angle of the nose ridge and the line for the eyes is enough to get me going. Thanks a lot Eric!

Really love your art and all your tutorials are very useful! I am learning to draw and I believe I am doing quite well with drawing from reference. However, I struggle a lot from drawing from pure imagination, as the proportion of things in face or the angle always looks wrong. At the end, it always ends with me copying parts of face from different references. Do you sometimes draw without a reference and how do you accomplish that?

This was a really good video!!! I ended up drawing this face three times - twice when I was following along with the video for the two techniques, and then once again with the video paused trying to use the guidelines you taught in my own way. I found it a little difficult to follow along with you just because I couldnt see the same shapes as you and Im used to starting in a different place, but once I applied the stuff I learned from following you on my third attempt it made way more sense (and the face turned out way closer to the actual picture!)
Anyway, thanks for making this! This is WAY more helpful than any other face tutorial video I've ever seen :)

My skill isn’t really very beginner level but not expert either, I am kind of stuck between just OK, and need to get better but am not really sure how to get from OK to great. This helped remind me enough about foundational portrait drawing but not so technical that it causes me to focus too much on technique. Thanks!

I recently started to learn how to draw and due to lack of materials i just went for digital art instantly (which feels like it makes it harder) and this breakdown is super healpful.
Michael Hampton was my anatomy teacher, I learned so much from him, so I totally agree with you on getting his book. He does a really good job explaining how to do the anatomy on top of showing you how to layer it. He also suggested Loomis.
I took Comparative Anatomy with him too and when we were drawing dogs one day, one of the pics was from a site that sold dog sex toys... it was a dog mounting it, it was pretty funny because he was dead serious about us drawing it and someone was like really? And Michael said really. I was the only one who laughed because he did it to troll us. He earned even more of my respect that day.
