You can make relatively complex art quickly by doing some background work before you start your piece.
Familiarize yourself with your art style by creating a legend of different body parts and facial features at different angles, experimenting with different shapes and sizes.
This way, you’re not constantly struggling to figure out how a character should look, which will eventually speed up the drawing process.
As for easy colouring, start with your mid tone, your darkest ambient occlusion, and the tone between those two. After that, you can pull out additional values and add specularity. The closer to the light and the smoother the object, the more intense the specularity.
If it’s a darker object, reduce your range of values: matte dark uses a few darker values, shiny dark uses sharp gradations from light to dark unless it’s translucent, then it would need more values for a mirror-like quality.
The colour of the light shows up the strongest in shadows, but also a bit on the main tones, so if you have blue ambient light like the sky, there will be blue in the shadows of your subject, with smaller hints in the light. The stronger the light, the lower the range of values.
Consider using families of colour for your subject as well. Have a light and dark family for each different coloured object on it, and be sure the values are no lighter or darker than anything in the opposite family.
Like the video said, use big, sloppy zones of colour before you refine. This will allow you to preview how your piece will look before it’s finished and establish a visual language.

As much as I'm not into the style, I do agree with his methods to paint for the algorithm.
People seem to forget that artists aren't exactly machines and most are now stuck between working on more holistic artwork and painting stuff to post on time.
It's bloody fucking irritating when I have to carve out time from my day after working to paint the bloody social media piece, and _then_ work on my portfolio piece.
The pros ofc, are that you do improve a little or learn to streamline your process. Cons are that you don't actually improve a whole lot if you have to rush a post every/other day. Painting with focus is the only key to improving on the long haul.
It's weird, this new consume-and-trash culture we've got.

idk if he does that in less than 2 hrs. I did that but use a layer shade method where i just create layers on same layers darken each top layer. Erase and subtract for light parts. Faster than color filled shadows i guess.

This is useful to learn but I need to be able to draw without a reference. I want to get into comics and being able to draw without a reference for a pose it very important.

to draw without a refrence you need to draw with refrences first and develop your muscle memory. Figure drawing and croquis will help you a tooon!
My art tremendously improved once I started drawing croquis.

@@istoleyourjams270 yep that’s so true, still need to practice from reference enough to be able to draw from the mind, I’m still working on that. It’s why I said learn in my original comment, I’m still young and have a long road ahead of me.

The red bit is similar to subsurface scartering. Instead of bouncing off the surface like a highlight, or being absorbed the way we see colors, the light gets a bit into the surface, and finds its way back out. This is ckmmonly seen in thinner areas, like between fingers, ears, and eyelids. Close your eyes in a bright area, and you'll be seeing red.
Having the red line on a more solid part like the neck implies a certain fattiness or meatiness to it, so it's a little more common on women. Makes them look softer.

The colour variation on the neck is called subsurface scattering 👍
It's a lighting technique that's used on soft surfaces like skin, clouds, and soft fabric, etc.

You can use his approach but first gotta master the drawing. In the other hand if you mastered to some extent then your style does not matter much. Generally speaking. Not for one individual.

The color on the neck is subsurface scattering and it's red because that's the color of the blood underneath the skin. Buuut people just draw red/orange lines on the edges of shadows to make things look cooler and it usually works
