I just wanted to say, huge shout out to tppo. If you can't tell, I was highly inspired by his videos, and he was the reason I wanted to make long-form videos again. As this is my first real go at long-form videos, please let me know what you think! Feedback is much appreciated 👍
I know tppo! I'm subscribed to them, and I think they're videos are very informative. For me, my method to retaining artist studies is I trace the piece beforehand, and use the traced version as my reference. And immediately after, I open a reference window & apply what I learned by sketching it out, if that makes sense. :3 I started studying that way when I began watching mikeymegamega's how to draw anime videos. And it greatly helps! 💜 I don't know why I didn't do that before.
that's who I thought you were at first! I went to your channel wanting to watch his previous vids and was like "where'd they all go!?" I really enjoyed this!
omg i just realized how underrated you are, you kept my attention throughout the video and i really liked your studying process. this has given me little tips and tricks to add into my art, you broke down the little details too, making everything clearer. i would love to see more! i honestly don’t know how you only have 700 subscribers
agreed. i usually have the attention span of a child on speed but i was totally engaged with this content. well done. and you did a good job explaining sams techniques.
I would love to see you breaking down more artists' styles. It's incredibly helpful to analyse artists styles for people who might also want to replicate!
Could you please do a breakdown of an artist called Lily? She used to draw stylised naruto fanarts. It may be difficult to find her art now, but I'm sure there is at least fb group with backup of most of her drawings. Honestly I've been a fan of her style since 2007 when I first discoveres it and haven't found any artist with similar style till this day. Would be fantastic to see your analysis on her style ❤
@@tazakart Could you check out the art style of this video game called Hades? Such a popular game with amazing character designs and use of color, but I've never seen any videos breaking the style down down honestly :]
This was actually so helpful- I’ve been doing colorless sketches forever because I never could wrap my mind around shading. But I think I’ll start trying again!
Really great analysis of Sam's art, and amazing editing. I see the hard work you put into this video and the inspiration from other creators. It's exciting to see this start and I can't wait to see you grow!
This is such a great video for artists that are just starting with digital art but I must say this is so surprising how are you so underrated!? I mean the your humour throughout the video was very entertaining and the breakdown of everything was extremely eazy to get.
You're so right about viewers having the attention span of a goldfish. Thank you for frequently reviewing parts of the video and simplifying sam's process into steps. If there's one thing I will remember in six months, it's "Warm, Cool, Warmer."
I'm really impressed with the quality of the video! Definitely earned a subscribe! I've been quite inspired by Sam's artstyle myself and I think that's very prominent looking at my more recent drawings, it's cool seeing you break down the process rather than just looking at the end result itself :)

Here’s an easy way to choose correct colors… Practice values. More often than not it’s the values you’re messing up with not the colours and there’s no such thing as right color some might prefer saturated, some desaturated some middle ground you get the point, artists pick colours according to their liking, mood or style. So just start with values first if you’re a beginner it’ll help a lot trust me.
Great tip! I agree value >>> color. For the purposes of replicating his style, I choose to focus on the colors he uses because I feel like his colors and lighting are a key aspect of his art
Love your way to make his ideal, sound great, I really crazy about his art, but so hard for the beginer like me, but when I saw your video that turn on me, really love it, thanks bro, will follow yours

Another thing I noticed is he'll set up a lot of his tones with very light-handed strokes with a large round brush. He creates soft transitions almost naturally that way, and doesnt have to touch them much and tries to preserve them well.
This is an amazing video!!!!!!! You really hammered down on the artist :0 its amazing! Im learning so much to. And youre right you rlly make it such an easily digestible thing which could otherwise be sooooo complicated! Hope you'll do more of these kind of vids :0 amazing!!!
there is actually a way I’ve discovered in procreate to make using halftones a little easier! When you go into the halftone filter, i know it seems that it’s all or nothing but that’s because it’s on the layer setting. Clicking where it says “halftone” with the % next to it allows you to switch it to pencil mode, which will only apply the halftones where you select on that layer. In my experience, if the halftones are black compared to the actual color you were adding halftones to, i alpha lock the layer and then tap it again and use fill layer with the original color. Hopefully this is helpful!
Simultaneously one of the coolest videos I have seen breaking down SamDoesArt & also one of the best examples for how artists fundamentally do the same thing AI does. Mechanically break down the components of what makes a copywritten work function, rebuild the work as a copy from scratch enough times to comfortably mimic the techniques, finally add your own flair by combining different inspirations or prompts (in this case another separate copywritten photo). Solid work man.
This was so cool to watch! It definitely seems like a good idea if youre trying to improve your art!! Also, im not sure if anyone has pointed it out yet, but there is a way to have a halftone brush! When you go to the layer filters and go to halftone, if you click the top grey bar where it says “halftone __%”, you should have the option to use the layer filter as a brush! Its a bit difficult to explain , but i hope this made sense! :)
Great video! However I think there is some merit to actually studying facial structure and how light is casted onto objects. For instance, the addition of orange throughout the portrait may seem random, but it is actually the glow from the skin reflecting onto the shadows. Sam just likes golden hour lighting. Also, I think u should make the lineart lighter and thinner, only using it as a guide while using colors to accentuate features. It would make it look cleaner, and be careful not to blur dark/purply shadows, and make sure to use them seldomly unless a close object is blocking light on the subject. Dont forget to flip the canvas too! And try to use warp before u render, but you could always fix the lines messed up by it at any time. :)
The way you broke down the process in this video so easily just goes to show how much effort you put into this outside the video. You were living and breathing samdoesarts for this haha also thx for the kiss ;D
Bro, you stupid 😂😂😂 I was laughing throughout the video, but somehow the knowledge you were sharing somehow sneaked into my psyche. Love your work, man ✊🏿 let's goooooooo!!!!
Hey I genuinely want to thank you, I have adhd and my attention span is indeed like a goldfish but for some reason your choice of music, speed of explantation and tone of voice really kept my brain to focus. You gained a subscriber :)
His artwork is fascinating because it's cute and clean and it has a really clever vibe to it right it's very consistent very consistent and very it's simplified to a point where it can easily be rendered in the way that this simplification is complex and it shows that or anyone can draw write like literally all you need is a little bit of knowledge and you can create havoc spectacular nothing in this world is perfect right you are work doesn't have to be perfect unless you're looking for that but you're at work has to be you you meaning it has to mean something and feel something to you you right and like yesterday many ways that people can have that same effect right but in our when you're trying to create something that you know no it's going to be good you're going to work on it 4 hours right and the funny thing is if you do that piece again why you can learn so much from what you've just done because it's still in your head right and even if you try to copy exactly it's not going to come out but then the next one the next one you do of that same first one you took hours doing it will come become quicker and quicker and quicker and the more faster you can do and certifications you can do it the better you are overcome that's the thing happened practising I've been working on a piece 40 hours when I finish it I literally have to decide we do it again and try to basically copy it I didn't come out exactly by but the way because I know what I've done one-eyed can interpret that and I can show in the time it took me the first time to do it and that's why I think it is practise makes perfect because does it really does right we need to go to our school to later because I teach are in school anyway right but you can become a anime artist if you look at other people of artists write like when people before when people used to think of are these to think of like you know those high-tech paid you seeing museums right nobody but now in this day and age that with Media when you cry your vehicle about more even anime or cartoon the awesome girls are something that is more simplified right and that is great to see that it doesn't have to be realistic doesn't have to be 1 and 1 on point anything and that's what makes it unique. Sorry for the rambling anyway where I was going to see is something along the lines of Sam does arts work is spectacular in a way where he is advanced a lot black he uses his references for the Lions and whatnot but it's the fact that because he's basically a knows about lying and he knows the structure of well his I'll see it right he can basically put her in any different light in shape and it still looks like the present which is fascinating to actually comprehend yes animated do all the time but the fact that you can can create a character right over and over and over again right with a brand new skirt try but never completely different lighting source and it still looks like the character because you know how on certain occasions that if you have a different lighting that you have a different light and Shadow it can change the face of the person that you was trying to draw might or not completely different but the way samdoesart does it every time I'm I can see is all see even if the line is different it doesn't change the facial structure she still looks like who she supposed to be witches very interesting
Im a fan of him since his realism arc. Sam started way way back with semi realism before doing his artstyle now, and base on my experience i tried sam face tutorial but still makes me confuse of the reference of what im using. its better to familiarized the structure of a human face first before going to a stylized art coz you may not understand the reference that your using specially coz the face is pretty complex not all faces are the same.

This is great. Keep it up. Informative and fun
Did a really good job bro
Your face values are off bro. But i loved your video. Keep grinding.
