The “Tell no one” rule is spot on. After being a binge drinking alcoholic for close to a decade, I quit one day and told no one. I felt like it was so important to me that it needed to stay with me until I had a better grip on my life. A co worker of mine asked why I had lost so much weight and I told her I cut out alcohol- the next day she showed me a TikTok that she made, and it was her dumping all of her alcohol into the sink with a caption about how she’s changing her life, and she doesn’t need to use alcohol as a crutch anymore. The moment I saw it, I knew that it was an attention seeking bit, and was disingenuous. The post was flooded with praise and compliments…she continued coming into work hungover, reeking of alcohol, and puking in the restroom until she was sent home. I feel like that was one of the reasons why she didn’t actually quit. 2 years later and I’m still rooting for her ❤

I’ve been watching your videos for few years now while I’ve been on and off with my sobriety. Today I celebrate nearly 3 months sober from alcohol, I built a home gym, I’m getting into the best shape of my life, and literally the other day I wrote in my journal right before I went to bed “doing the right thing feels SO much better than doing the wrong thing” and hearing you touch on that exact principle is that affirmation shit I do like. You're doing amazing my man, the videos are getting better in terms of both quality and actual content. I've been doing very well over the past years: successfully fighting a very difficult personality disorder and completely beating the deepest depression of my life. I've been living a life I never imagined possible five years ago. But the little voice you mention in step 8 is very strong. For me, it tells me that it's still not enough, always telling me I should've done more, earlier, better. I've been working at actively being proud of my achievements, because otherwise it's very easy to slip back into bad habits. This voice is an evil thing. It tells you you're worthless for not working out while it itself is the same thing telling you not to work out because you're worthless. Do not give it this power. It only wants to sustain itself on negativity. You actually have the power to tell it to fuck off and it works surprisingly well.
i love this. it’s real straight to the point. no bs. i love how he says you don’t need to be ready to make a big change in life, you just need to do it, and take one step at a time.
I"ve found that the "don't tell people" rule also plays out in the realm of creative writing. When you spill the beans on something you're working on because you're excited about it, that can have a negative effect on your motivation because your desired result (telling a story) is already fulfilled.
I just recently broke this rule and regretted it right away. Told a friend about one of my new character ideas and they immediately started chiming in with "suggestions" of changes. Even though I trust it was in good faith, just trying to help, it was still a downer especially since I knew better than to say anything about it this early into the process.
#2 is an incredibly important point. When I want to start doing something, I start researching "what's the most efficient way to do this" or something along those lines. I spend so much time thinking and researching about said thing that I end up not even doing it. It's like Nike's motto Just Do It
@@melkerart1793 that's not the context of what the video or my comment meant. I highly encourage anybody to research how to fix a control panel before they start poking electrical shit with a screwdriver. The context of the video is saying if you're going to learn how to ice skate to just lace up the skates instead of looking into "how to skate". Babies don't "research" how to walk they just do it.
@@melkerart1793 This analogy doesn't make any sense, it has nothing to do with the video. We're not talking about repairing appliances, we're talkig about doing something to better ourselves.
Start immediately - but small. Like running for many people can be bad if they just do it, because they are overweight and lack the muscle, so they injure themselves. Better to start with walking.
I needed this so much. I love planning, I tend to sit hours at my desk planning stuff, writing down everything, trying to consider every potential obstacle etc. The hardest part is getting into action. Sometimes, when I finally get myself to do it, I am amazed of how good it feels and how easy it is. I am wasting my time planning stuff, I should just do it.😢
I’ve watched plenty of these videos. I can say full well this is the most level headed and correct way of goodness. I’ve never heard something this logical and consistent in a while.
2:41 - Takeaway - "You need less information, not more information. Transformation is something that happens through action!" (take it with the context though)
This is the best bald talking head channel I've found on RUclips. I used to be fundamentally against "self help" but after living close to half a century and amassing a generous collection of anecdotal examples for why helping yourself may actually benefit one's self in the long run, or more correctly, how not helping yourself may hurt one's life outcome, I've been putting more effort into "self helping." Your pragmatic and humorous no-nonsense approach is refreshingly different and helpful to, uh, myself helping myself self help.
The caffeine addiction section is exactly what I do. I've tried to quit caffeine, but as someone who rarely drinks and doesn't smoke, it's the one vice I like haha. I do the exact same thing you do and have been going to the gym 3-5 times a week the last 7 years. I feel great pretty much every day.
It highlights their own lack of effort. And it shows you who you should spend less time around. Who you socialize with has a huge effect on your own life.
Was called too old at 50! Started training in crumbling garage lifting rocks doing pushups on paint cans pullups on beams got in decent shape at 54 years old!!!
I need to do that. I'm 50 and watching my mom and aunt hobble around on walkers and canes, on pain meds for constant pain though they're only in their 70s, really shows me what I'd like to avoid if possible.
Love the straightforward approach! These steps feel doable and practical. It's refreshing to see such clear guidance on getting organized and motivated. I can't wait to start implementing these ideas and see how it transforms my routine!
Regarding to step 3: "Don't hide", I agree that is insecure. But when you feel so bad about yourself and even feel shame, it is almost innevitable to hide, going ghost mode, deleting social media, Letting the others "forget" about you so you don't feel that shame as much. And eventually coming back not like if you were some kind of perfect being but at least someone who is not ashamed about himself. Coming back like nothing bad have actually happened to you and you have most things figured out. I'm currently going through that, sadly. Knowing that is insecure I'm doing it anyways. The pain is so intense to bear. On the bright side, the last two steps helps a lot. I will definitely work on that.
i agree, but in the other hand, it works according to step 6 "do it your way" : if you feel like this it what you need, because of who you are, or where you currently are in life, then go for it
@@ugocaquais5598 From personal experience I think that advice is helpful. Reframe “immature” to “my way”-takes a judgment from anyone else to only the person’s judgment that matters. Do you want you want to do your way if it’s what you think is best for you.
I am/was in a similar situation and felt shame for myself cause i realized a lot of what i thought was 'me' and my 'status' were suddenly gone and thought hiding was the way to go because i felt intense shame and pain. Deleting social media is definitely not a bad idea because its a superficial and toxic place, but generally the thought that you feel ashamed of yourself and that therefore you have to hide is extremely unhealthy, cause saying you will come back when you have it figured out is like saying you are only worthy to be in the presence of your peers or society if you are up to a certain standard of worldly achievements, which is the wrong angle cause, as i realized, most people don't give a shit about you anyway and those who do don't care about your achievements cause that doesn't change who you fundamentally are as a person. That doesn't mean you should stop working on yourself etc., but you shouldn't take the negative thoughts of people that actually don't matter to you as your main motivation. What really helped me letting go of a lot of these thoughts is eckhart tolle and the concept of 'Ego' and how bad it actually is to be too identified with your achievements instead of being content with yourself and going your own way at your own pace. Can only recommend some of his talks here on RUclips on ego, gratitude and happiness. Wishing you the best, i know how painful this is.
I rarely comment on videos, but this is just one great video! I was watching a random fitness video from an Indian channel and had gone to pee to come back that this video played right after. I don't know if I would've otherwise clicked on this video, I rarely watch videos like this. But man as soon as I listened a few sentences, I couldn't stop and listen to the whole thing. There was so much in this video that I felt like I needed to hear. And I totally love and understand the feeling of feeling better when you're on the path that you know is good for you. I agree to everything you said in this video and oh man I'm just so grateful this video popped up on my RUclips. Thank you so much!
You are talking the truth really, i love watching your content and testing them in real life. Every video of yours is truly a gem for me, personally. Thanks so much
Life's been hitting with some failures after taking big risks, but to get my shit together I'm starting to think that first I want to do things to feel better about myself REGARDLESS of what reaction or result I can get from it. I think that's step 1 when shit hits the fan. Thank you
This video was a real eye-opener! The biggest lesson for me is to keep plans to myself and let actions speak for themselves. Starting before feeling ready is a light bulb moment too-perfection isn't needed to begin. The idea of using my quirks to my advantage was unexpected yet practical. Lastly, it’s refreshing to remember to appreciate the journey and not dwell on lost time. Thanks for the wisdom!
I've spent all morning procrastinating; it's tired me out, so I need a lie down now for a couple of hours before I can do any more. Maybe I need to think about it for a while longer before making a decision; no use rushing things.
@@defaultytuser I actually got stuff done, I did something important I had been putting off for weeks. Then I had a clear out and I’m 3/4 way finished, will finish it today, then I hit the gym:)
What i've learned in half of year of self employement and reaching my goals. Your biggest opponent is YOU. I was a big talker before because i was convinced i could do it. Instead i failed a lot and looked like a fool and also have been a naive fool. Be yourself and keep to yourself. Also sometimes all it takes is a video from a majestic mustache man.
Step three really resonated with me. I've always had a very low opinion of myself, always felt like everyone around me know what they're doing more than I do, therefore as an example, I've never asked questions or wanted help, thinking that whatever I lack I have to compensate for by myself, that I have to know whatever I'm learning before I even start. That has made me give up on almost everything I've started basically at the beginning, stagnating in life for a decade now. I'm in the midst of this cycle of failure right now, actually. I think one reason for this is that I've never learned anything from school, for instance. I had good results, but that was because I would learn most things by myself. Things that didn't interest me in my free time I barely got through, while subjects that I was interested in I passed with barely any worry. The end result has been a complete lack of ability to put the work in, which has sabotaged my life since. And of course, the more you fail, the less you want to try.
First of all, great video. You talked about some things that I haven't heard anyone talk about before when the topic of changing and getting your shit together is metioned. Let me bore you for a second, I'm 23, and I have been on the journey to better myself for the last 5 months. I've lost weight, I started taking care of my hair and my skin, started working out and I've never felt better. I still have days of feeling useless, fat, unattractive, days when I lack the motivation for anything. But I found myself getting more and more happy with each day, I stopped hating looking in the mirror, my stress levels have died down, my depression slowed down to the point of me being able to function normally on day to day basis. I feel like a different person all together. The thing that helped me the most was starting off slow, I was one of the people to jump into the deep water with everything, be it weight loss or exercising. I found myself very burnt out in a week, sometimes even less. In april of this year I decided to make slow adjustments to my lifestyle, minor things like eating less sugar, less calories, trying to exercise everyday while at the same time not blaming myself if I didn't have the time or want to. I've been hearing people saying all these things about "trusting the process" and "keeping it up for a long amount of time" and that always scared me away from starting (my idea of dieting back then for example was to eat basically nothing, or like a max of 500 calories a day). It really isn't as hard as I thought It would be. When I look back I'm not blaming my younger self for not taking the first steps, my plan is to enjoy this lifestyle and the person I am right now. I am at peace with the person I was before. I hope you have a wonderful day.
Thanks for that comm dude. I was about to write a comment myself about all my bad thoughts but i decided to first check this section and thanks god i did it. Im 22 lvl already and i guess im in the place u were few months ago. My biggest problem is to think im bad at everything i do and im totally worthless. I fight with that all my life and your story reminded me that its getting better but just slowly. I fucked up a few things last couple years and my motivation is at level 0 but i hope the future will be kind for me. I will remember your story and i will try to get my shit together with the time passing by. Thanks and good luck in your jurney
I don’t think you understand how I audibly gasped when I watched this video…. You literally put into words everything I was thinking…. The going into hiding , wanting to tell everyone… you said everything I was doing to a T …. The first video I have found that’s about self improvement and that doesn’t constantly shit on the watcher and tell them that they are nothing and they need to do better in life… thank you for making a video that you talk to someone like they are genuinely lost and need guidance ❤
Thank you Joey for even caring enough to try to help us with these videos. Sometimes I feel like a lost cause but having someone sitting there talking common sense through my phone screen is a huge blessing. 😌
Step 1 is very important. Especially when you tell everyone, you visualize it as if youve already done it and then lose interest. Never tell anyone about anything

" 10:18 You think you need that motivational video you saw on TikTok and can't find now" was the moment I realized I was always looking and saving these videos and just as I did this one, but I needed to hear that.
8:50 people will criticize this, saying that you are faking your consistency, that you "SHOULD" be able to do the things either way, meanwhile they create excuses to why they dont do the stuff they wanna do. Tactics are a thing

It's always easy to forget how much you accomplished, but look at how well you are doing ! You are on the right track, be proud of yourself because you would never want to go back. Keep pushing and remember how great what you have accomplished is !
That’s not what matter, it’s about you going around and talking about your goals which in turn makes your mind believe that it has already achieved the sought after goal, it’s all in the mind.

#2 Really hit hard, I am a chronic perfectionist in a sense that I need everything to be perfectly lined up and ready before I start working towards a goal. Good mindset change to just do the thing, thanks Joey
Thank you Joey, as always. Who knows what kind of hole we'd all collectively be in without your influence on the world through your fantastic videos. You've pulled another viewer (in myself) out of a rut yet again.
Summary: (make sure to watch the video too) 1. Don't tell anyone. Do this for you. 2. Start before you're ready. The feeling of readiness will never come, atleast not without prior experience. So the only way to feel ready is to start before you feel this way. Whatever you feel (tired, insecure, etc) do the thing anyway. This is how you built confidence. 3. Don't hide in the shadows. Insecure people tend to want to improve without anyone seeing the process and the mistakes along the way. Don't do this. Keep living your life, imperfect as you are. 4. Life is like a trainride Every little decision is part of the big trajectory. No need for "big moments" just many little "boring" correct choices. 5. Change your environment, change your behaviour. It is that simple. Make it as easy as possible to do what's good for you. 6. What do you want and why? Figure this out. Know yourself, know the truth. If you think about it, bad behaviour is bad because we delude ourselves and than regret it. Once you put faith in the good path, and start to see some results, you will not want to go back ever again. 7. Pay attention Notice how much better it feels to be who you want to be. To know you're on the right track. It is the most happy life. 8. Rejoice Take time to reflect on your behaviour and what this entails for the future. Don't listen to the little voice saying "why didn't you start earlier" this is completely useless. You had your reasons then, and you learned your lessons. You just weren't ready, but somehow, by not giving up you have become ready, and are living it now. If you can just keep working hard in good faith, what could the years bring? Who could you be? Isn't that more interesting than hypotheticals about your past? "The secret of change, is not fighting the old, but building the new." - Seneca

It's like Nike's motto Just Do It
If I'm going to repair an appliance I'm definitely going to investigate the shit out of it beforehand. _Don't_ just do it.
"it's the small choices that we make in out day to day life" is reallly powerful
Oh wow! That is really good. I’m going to write it on a post-it. Thanks!! 🙏
where are you
I needed this so much.
Do you have more info on that?
I've been in my head about not starting earlier. This nasty ooze of regret that festers into inaction. I really needed to hear #8. Thank you
You owe it to yourself to get you sh*t together. No one will do it for you. You've got this. Stay Uncommon!
Seneca's quote = goosebumps
Love your channel. Keep it up man!
I also found out that telling people about your goals can actually attract jealousy, unfortunately not everyone wishes the best for you
people can feel attacted because they know they should also make a change but dont want to do it
it just shows who your true friends are!
It highlights their own lack of effort. And it shows you who you should spend less time around. Who you socialize with has a huge effect on your own life.

Proving it on your channel garageman brutal training keep it up grandpa 🔥
Who called you too old? Assuming it was someone of similar age they were probably just making excuses for themselves tbh
The fact that your garage is crumbling isnt relevant at all. Well done though
I need to do that. I'm 50 and watching my mom and aunt hobble around on walkers and canes, on pain meds for constant pain though they're only in their 70s, really shows me what I'd like to avoid if possible.
Never too old to change!
Love the straightforward approach! These steps feel doable and practical. It's refreshing to see such clear guidance on getting organized and motivated. I can't wait to start implementing these ideas and see how it transforms my routine!

The STASH is looking good brother
That's a cookie duster
Deleting social media did wonders for me.
This is too real brother . Too relatable.
Thanks Joe, for all your videos. Each and every single one of them is cinema.
Your videos are filled with positivity. I like them.

“Start before your ready” has been on my mind all day. I needed to hear that.

Life's been hitting with some failures after taking big risks, but to get my shit together I'm starting to think that first I want to do things to feel better about myself REGARDLESS of what reaction or result I can get from it.

Man does #8 really ring a bell. Thanks bro, for making these videos. Much appreciated from the community.
This video popped up just as I was about to procrastinate. Thank you I’m choosing to get shit done!
I've spent all morning procrastinating; it's tired me out, so I need a lie down now for a couple of hours before I can do any more. Maybe I need to think about it for a while longer before making a decision; no use rushing things.
Did you get shit done or ended up procrastinating a bit more?

What i've learned in half of year of self employement and reaching my goals. Your biggest opponent is YOU. I was a big talker before because i was convinced i could do it. Instead i failed a lot and looked like a fool and also have been a naive fool. Be yourself and keep to yourself.
Also sometimes all it takes is a video from a majestic mustache man.
The most essential video i saw for a long time. Thank you very much ✨
Step three really resonated with me.
I don't recall giving you permission to observe my life and publish everything I did wrong 😔
3:16 After watching this a second time weeks later, I laughed pretty hard about that background video... 🙊

Easily the best video and best advice I have ever seen. This helped me sooo much you have no idea
Thank you Joey, as always. Who knows what kind of hole we'd all collectively be in without your influence on the world through your fantastic videos.
You've pulled another viewer (in myself) out of a rut yet again.
Summary:
(make sure to watch the video too)
4. Life is like a trainride
Every little decision is part of the big trajectory.
7. Pay attention
Notice how much better it feels to be who you want to be. To know you're on the right track. It is the most happy life.
8. Rejoice
Take time to reflect on your behaviour and what this entails for the future.
