me at 3.33 am right now, knowing my future self (in the morning/afternoon lol) will be too lazy to follow through with whatever plans to better myself i come up with ...
Been in a 3 month rut, and it got pretty bad. I lost my job, i defaulted on a couple bills, but recently I started to feel the motivation to get up again. So right now I’ve started with simply hitting the gym. After a couple days of doing that, I cleaned my apartment room at a time. it’s been a couple weeks now and I’ve really gotten into a grove with these. Headed to a couple potential employers tomorrow to see about getting another job. Fingers crossed that my gradual introduction this time leads to better results. Thank you for the content, this was exactly the motivation and reassurance I needed!
My whole life is just a repetitive cycle of trying to come out of a rut for a long time, then finally getting out of it and being productive for a short period, and then get stuck in a rut again
I love the "start something" principle. Newton's first law. A body at rest, stays at rest and a body in motion stays in motion. So just a gentle nudge is an absolute winner. Thanks for this
My goal for day 1 was to wake up. That's it. Set an alarm, get up when it rings, and not go back to sleep. 7 days later my gym route is back, my house is spotless, I've seen people i haven't seen in months, and I'm struggling to find time for video games. Starting small works
same here. just woke up at day 1... hated the bright sky, like the previous days. made some tea and now life seems a bit less horrible already. it's 8:26 and I'll just exist while it's morning. it's not even early anymore, but it sure is an advance considering I've been waking up near lunch lately.
we are on a roll..... don't want to change too much midstream.... the thought of being seen as less than fully dedicated to the cause of staying distracted 24/7 makes my socks roll up and down.
Bro i just watched it today, been in a rut for 2 weeks as well. I been seeing this in my recommended and kept scrolling past it, finally clicked it lmao
Needed this, I have a bad cycle of doing everything perfectly for 3 months then spending the next 3 months doing the bare minimum and sometimes unable to even get out of bed, i didn’t realize it’s possible to find a balance too thank you!
Didn't search for this tbh. It just randomly pop up in recommendation and yes I'm too lazy to do the usual stuff that i really do. Not hitting my qouta anymore just playing games more often, no more exercise ,eating while watching tv damn
This is my life since about the age of 12. A head injury 13 yrs ago didnt help it either, just happened more frequently. It's refreshing to hear someone else saying they go through it too. Becoming self aware takes Courage and time and learning to accountable for your own actions to yourself. Don't ever give up , things can always get better. Thank you for sharing
“Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, rather than who someone else is today”. That is my biggest takeaway from this video. Thank you for amazing content 🙏
If that's one of your biggest takeaways, you might wanna dive into videos of Jordan Peterson talking about motivation, discipline and responsibility. This idea was actually formulated by him in his book "12 Rules for Life".
00:00 Lack of motivation can lead to self-destruction 01:08 Utilize the 'do something' principle for action 02:28 Start with action to gain momentum 03:43 Reward yourself for small wins 04:58 Manage your primal brain with higher judgement and compassion 06:07 Organically grow a productive lifestyle 07:23 Reducing friction is key to sustained productivity 08:37 Learn how to climb out of a rut
Start with a clean environment! What worked best for me (everyone is different) was deep cleaning my room and disinfecting everything so that I felt like I was was in a fresh relaxing environment. Once i did that, it became so much easier to climb out of that rut. The mind is powerful so the more you are aware of how much you have accomplished the more you do accomplish!
I love this because for me when I was depressed it started with making my bed, and then cleaning my room, and taking care of basic fundamental hygiene and everything rolled from that. I always feel decluttering helps get that ball rolling
I’m gonna say, this literally got recommended when I really needed it.. I dont even write comments, but you literally described me right now.. Thank you. I got inspired
Rewording my goals has helped me stay on track. Instead of something like “get fit” I used “become more in-tune with my body” followed by ways to do so such as bow flex, skate, dance, etc. I also labeled my goals as falling under one of four categories: physical health, intellectual health, social health, and spiritual health. This helps me remember to keep balance in all aspects of my life and also not be so hard on myself if I don’t work on all my goals that day. If I can work on at least one goal in each category, I’m making progress.
I just thought the same things on your health categories but I called them purpose categories. I just figured out last night that I haven't had a purpose for the last 28 years after graduation from college. Best of luck to you!!!
Tips that always help me :) 1. Don’t think. Just do! 2. Lower your expectations for results. The important thing is just to TRY. 3. Start small. Break down large tasks into much smaller tasks. 4. Set a short timer (2-10 minutes) for each task and repeat timer until you have finished said task. 5. Consistency is key! Find a routine and stick to it. 6. Be kind to yourself. Reward yourself for completing every task. 7. Hold yourself accountable when you know you’re not doing your absolute best. 8. No excuses. Just do it! You got this!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Hey, thanks for all the upvotes. You’ve made me feel seen and I appreciate you! 💛
this is exactly me right now - was killing it studying for exam, passed it, happy about it, took a (intentional) 1 week break from life, and now i'm in a rut
Damn... i was so productive and because of sitting at home entire days I became more and more undisciplined each day... RN I'm skipping (home) workouts and the work that I put off is piled up... Let's get out of this rut together you reading this!
@@lukedocherty2855 I have actually for me the trick lies in doing my workout as soon as I wake up and not later in the day when I'm already kind of tired from all the other work. And with that if I did my workout in the morning I also feel more productive for the rest of the day
@@tosh8377 ikr. That guy gave me the motivation to make my bed everyday. I do that but still cant find any motivation to get back to my work lol. But still making bed generates some kind of energy or something like that in my body. All i gotta do is convert the energy to my work
Myself, I work for a company that blames me when the people I go to help make a decision that doesn't put money in companies pocket. The people I help have already paid $300 for the 24hr at call service. I then have to go around with someone less qualified to see what I'm doing wrong. I feel very much attacked. Oh I've also been to the doctor and had a talk about it. He just had a good laff and said I'm not the one with the problem. But shit it makes my life a misery.
"After days of binging dopamine" That little phrase there really opened my understanding of why I feel like crap after only watching tv for days in a row.
Yeah. I mean, the sitting on your ass. Probably eating junk food. Not moving. Ignoring other things that need to be done. None of that is why you feel like crap huh
@@egeniojaramillo9048 No, idiot, you feel bad all of a sudden. Not motivated to do anything, besides eating junkfood, and watching tv shows. Eating junkfood etc, triggers dopamine wich makes you feel good. For example: that bag of cookies you're eating, the reason why you keep eating them while you know you shouldn't isn't only because they are tasty, but also because sugar stimulates the dopamine receptors, releasing dopamine in the brain wich again, makes you feel good.
When I feel down, I allow myself two days of that feeling. I binge Netflix and I munch on junk without feeling bad. I noticed that the more i guilt myself at being unproductive the more difficult it is to get out of the rut because i’ll keep wanting more down time because I never enjoyed it to begin with. I dont know if that makes sense.
I’m jumping in the shower right now. I needed this kick up the ass. Depression sucks. 😭 sending out many hugs to any one in a rut on these last 2 days of 2020. 🙏🤗❤️
In Sha Allah you will have no depression and you will feel content in life and be happy Ameen May Allah Bless us Alll with barakah and provisions ameen.
Everyone is going through these phases. Moving home and going away for a long business trip coming out of summer holidays got the best of me and I've been struggling big time to get out of my rut. No gym, no running, no waking up early. But this video reminded me how actions are controlling our motivation - just "DO SOMETHING" and the rest will follow! Thank you! :)
This video may have been life changing for me. Two months ago when the quarantine started I felt like every living moment was a chore. I saw a few of your videos and this one really struck a chords with me. It gave me the motivation to do something. Two months later, lost 12lbs, wrote 3 chapters in my book, read 5 books, improved my relationships, felt like life was good every living day. There were days that I struggled but I keep on pushing through. Today I ended up in a funk and I knew exactly where to go to find my trueself again. Joey you are a life changer.
How are you doing now? Were you able to keep moving forward? I can’t seem to get the cycle started, but I’m desperately needing this kind of amazing change in my life.
The "do something" principle is really a great strategy. But the biggest takeaway for me is knowing I'm not alone. Every time I enter a rut I always feel like I'm the only one in the world who can't stay on track. But after watching this and reading the comments it's amazing to realise how similar other persons' experiences are to mine. This helps a lot with moving forward. Sometimes knowing you're not alone can make all the difference.
@@Fillup82Yes he mentioned everything I’ve been doing! I follow my schedule then when I hit that rut I’m stuck on tiktok for a week, eating unhealthy, feeding into unhealthy habits & sleeping alll day. I basically allow myself to rot and then slowly ease into my routines. But dammit I just want to be 100% consistent for once. I’ll get there eventually.
Why is that advice any good, " you are not alone" like who fuckin cares, I have no friends and no family to care about me, I don't think that noone in the wod has the same situation as me, it's just such useless advice and is basically saying " yeah your not the only one going through shit so shut up"
@@Reivaz88 whether you realize it or not you have a whole spiritual team that cares about you that surpasses your friends or family here in the 3d. It’s your job to seek solitude in order to tap in, see, hear & receive the love and guidance that is here for you within you! I don’t think “you’re not alone” is meant the way you’re taking it. It’s just as humans we honestly do go through things that make us feel alone or like it’s only happening to us when in reality there’s nothing under the sun we go through that hasn’t been done before! I pray you are able to release this mentality, seek the God that is within you and know that there is soul community out there for you! Ask your spirit to guide you and you shall find what you seek! Take care babes! You’re Honestly not alone out here! 🤎
as someone who regularly struggles with executive dysfunction, this video is very helpful! i do a couple of these already- the “do something principal” is basically how i get anything done lol. giving yourself extremely easy goals that would be nearly impossible NOT to do is a great way to trick your brain into starting on tasks you put off. (and if you really don’t end up doing anything beyond that easy first goal, at least you got a little done instead of nothing!) i especially learned from the 2nd and 3rd strategies. i tend to want to ride the high of motivation and end up tiring myself out, putting myself in a brand new rut. even though i know it isn’t working, it’s hard to convince yourself in the moment that taking a bunch of small breaks and rewarding yourself before you’re even that tired is a good idea. hearing someone talk about the logic behind the method is really good for silencing the part of my mind that insists i’m being lazy for not getting everything done in one sitting. all in all, thanks for the video!
“Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not who someone else is today” love that quote, you’ll only become better the more you see progress in yourself not your progress compared to others
Thanks, I'm constantly in quick ruts and I really need momentum right now. It is a blessing to return to your channel and find the ideas that introduced me to selfdevelopment in the beginning.
I’ve been stuck in this “rut” from the day of my 30th birthday. Something changed.. I use to be highly motivated and was the guy that went to the success seminars, watched all the videos, read all the books. I was big into working out! Being healthy and fitness was higher priority. I was headed somewhere in life, with purpose I felt. Today. I’m 34. I’m depressed, lonely, broke, angry, I have bouts of rage, stressed constantly, annoyed with everyone, don’t care for being polite in public anymore. I’ve become something I hate and despise. Maybe this video came to me for a reason. I don’t know. But this video directly spoke to me. Thank you.

That’s what happened. After doing all this stuff you were told to do, not by yourself but society, after completing it, you haven’t found a personal purpose for yourself.
@@realmadamebproductions6202 If you haven't seen it already, search for "Alan Watts on education". He describes exactly what you're talking about, and concludes with (paraphrasing from memory): "But we fooled ourselves the entire way. We thought of life as a pilgrimage, as a quest, with a serious purpose at the end and the thing was to get to that end. But we were wrong all along: it was a musical thing, and you were supposed to sing and dance while the music was being played". And that's a good attitude towards life. Furthermore, you're not responsible for everything in life. Your first responsibility is to yourself. Treat yourself as you would treat others. Lots of people put their own physical and mental health in second place. While it's commendable that you would take excellent care of a child or a pet, remember that you owe yourself that same level of attention and care. Your second responsibility is to your loved ones. Be they family, partner, friends or even pets. Take good care of them, and they will take good care of you when you're in need. Even if it's just offering emotional support. Your last responsibility is to humanity as a whole. Try not to do anything to jeopardise the future of the species or harm society. In concrete terms that would equate to trying not to contribute to the toxic atmosphere in online comments sections, trying to minimise your ecological footprint, that sort of stuff. Now, I'm not the best at all of that either. But it being difficult to follow doesn't invalidate the advice. ;)
Been in a 6 month rut... I was exercising and reading and writing from home very consistently and still keeping up with hobbies and gaming with friends here and there, then my girlfriend came to visit and I decided to relax while she was there and it put me in that rut and I've been struggling to get out ever since. It's getting to the point where I'll sleep past alarms and get late to work, and I'll be a lot less motivated there too. Today though, I'm going to do the dishes and cook myself a meal.
I've dealt with the same thing. My first job after college was around the 2008 recession. We went from being very busy to having no work. For months, I sat at my desk with nothing to do. Before the recession, I was always motivated. After, I found it very hard to get back to work. At first I had to force myself to work and it felt hard. But, I stayed consistent and it wasn't long before my drive came back. I notice the same thing can happen after taking a vacation.

When I'm in a rut or feeling low and depressed I say to myself, doing something is always better than doing nothing. It can be the smallest thing like taking the garbage out or taking 5 mins to clean the sink. Sometimes its the little things that can bring about the biggest change.

Ha. I got to finishing 3/4 ths of the video before I did that. I wish RUclips videos were set up so that I couldn't see the comments until I finished the video.
the way you pace your commentary along with the tonality you use combined with the info ... makes this so easy to digest. my way of getting of a rut it simply to decide to do the first two minutes of anything ... that's it ... from there if flow has been created i go with it for another 15 mins. if not then i return to the task either later in the day or the following day.
Something I do to help myself get into the swing of things at work: I write down a very short "To Do" list. I will put THREE items on it that I KNOW I can do without difficulty. This can be emails, reading a chapter in a book on leadership, or sending a text to my active clients to let them know I'm thinking about them. Then I cross each item off the list as I complete these menial tasks. Once the three items are completed, I write down three more. Because I have ADD, sometimes I need to write down the entire day's list on a separate sheet of paper, before I forget anything. Then I will take out a separate sheet of paper (of my daily planner) and transfer three items at a time from the master sheet. This has been very helpful to me since I have a tendency to become overwhelmed when there are many things to do. And when I feel overwhelmed, my mind becomes cluttered and I can't be as productive as I should be, and it also seems to take more mental energy which leads to premature fatigue. I hope this helps someone out. For the record, today is February 5th. For those of you who feel as though the ship has already sailed to have a productive year, stop the negative thought process. Before the end of this week, you can write down your yearly goals, and break them down into monthly, weekly, and daily goals. Set yourself up to hit the ground running HARD next Monday. Remember that the goal is never to be as good as somebody else you're envious of. The goal is to be better than you were yesterday. Even if only slightly. You CAN be more patient. You CAN take a 5 minute walk. You CAN call up your parents to thank them for everything, and see if there's anything they need a hand with. You CAN greet your pet with silly talk and a walk when you walk through the door after work. You CAN pick up a book and read 5 pages. You can do this. I know you can because I have gone through this process myself. It isn't easy and it takes WORK. But remember: Everything is difficult before it becomes easy. God's blessings on your marriage, relationships, health and business in 2020.
Hey man, aside from a few jokes in the comment section, this is actually a really good video and very good advice. I have been in a rut since I left my job 2 months ago. Idleness definitely plays a part in negative thinking and self-loathing. I have slowly added more and more responsibilities to my daily tasks and am now almost completely up & running again. I tried to do it all in one day and burnt out rather quickly. You are definitely correct, you have to slowly progress and improve, not take it all in at once. We are human and yes, even the strongest of us can and will burn out in life. I used to work in a Psyche Ward and would see men and woman check themselves in not necessarily because they had mental issues per se, but bc they burned out from life and trying to take on so much at once. It was really cool speaking with them bc I realized anyone of us could be in there. It is okay to relax, reboot, and do nothing, some would go as far to say it is rather healthy and healing. This video is exactly what a person needs after the reboot to get up and back going again. Keep up the great work. 👍
I really appreciate your comment and the perspective it brings. When you consider the alternative to taking time to reboot being checking one's self in to a mental healthcare facility to force downtime, it makes it seem much more needful/necessary. That perspective allows me to feel like less of a slug for taking time to rest and reboot. Thank you.
Johnny Five I feel you sir. I worked in a manager position in retail for many years, and although I did not reach a corporate level position, man did I feel the burden and weight of the entire organization. And the commute too was horrific. It seemed like I had zero time nor energy to devote to myself and my wellness. No time to decompress and refocus after the mental, emotional, and physical exhaustion. Our careers play SO MUCH into our wellbeing. If we are stuck w toxic co-workers and in a place where the positive mission statement goes no further than a PR campaign, we will eventually suffer physical and/or mental tribulations. How do I know? Been there. I quit a few jobs, not because I couldn't handle the work, but because it was so taxing to my inner spirit. The careers I get into always place me with negative co-workers and negative superiors. But you know what sir, it's okay. I learned a lot every time, most importantly what I personally and professionally forbid to put up with. Don't be hard on yourself, you did everything that you could do. They didn't appreciate you nor were they worthy of your sacrifices anymore. You removing yourself from such a high position tells me that you understand your self-worth and are willing to sacrifice for your happiness. I think you also learned that although money is good, happiness holds more value. Very admirable sir. Yes, it will take a few months for you to shake off the negative traces of what you just selflessly endured and that's cool. Take the time you need to get that spark back. The Universe, be it God, Destiny, or any other force you may believe in, was directing you to something greater. That role you played, was just that, a role, where you discovered truths about yourself and the unfortunate realities of that particular profession (or corporation). Stay strong, you are not alone man. Millions of people are either suffering through the exact same thing you just went through without standing up for themselves, or like you, they removed themselves from the situation and are re-focusing. That passion that drove you there, will eventually come back with rest. You deserve a breather brother. And there's nothing wrong starting back at the bottom. Something small will cause your inner determination to boil up until you shoot for the stars again. I know you probably feel like a quitter, but brother, you aren't! You are a professional who decided to be brave enough to remove yourself from a situation that was compromising your health. We must remember, your health & well-being should ALWAYS come before your job. Start slow as the video suggested, eat healthy, exercise if possible, and I promise you sir, you will attract the right energy to get you back on your feet. I have been through this a few times, and I always bounce back a better person and a more informed professional. P.S. Much respect for earning and accepting a corporate (salaried) position. Those never come easy and always at a very high price!! Is or was that price worth it?? You will always be a corporate professional sir, you just need to find the right place. Until then, reboot, refocus, then kick-ass!!!
Lists! They really help me feel organized mentally, I realized that if I start feeling overwhelmed with a bunch of small tasks I will often do nothing. When I write them down in a list, it’s relieves the stress and I can start actually checking them off! And I’m always surprised that the list is shorter than I think
As someone with ADHD I just program alarms on my phone so there is an audible ring when I need to do something so I can snap out of it and get to work.
I've been working on myself this month and I kinda let myself go this weekend, this video after a run really got me out of this rut. You're not weak for taking a few days off; for self improvement is never a straight line.
honestly, I thought the same. But I also have super long and curly hair, which means taking a full shower with washing my hair takes me around 45 minutes, spending most of that time with my head upside down. So yeah, like, I need a lot of motivation to do that
Same. I just gotta find the thing that's easy for me to do. I think my rut is a lot lower than his example, so my "do somethings" are going to be a LOT smaller than his. Hopefully one day they'll be bigger.
I set small goals for myself. Whenever I fall down these mental holes (ruts), I tell myself I don’t have to do much, maybe just one small thing that day. It’s enough to just do the dishes. Or put away the clothes scattered around my bedroom. Or cook a proper meal (something more than cup noodles). Or go for a walk outside. Fresh air really helps, even just 10 minutes of it. Baby steps means the world. It makes me feel much better and I leave the rut quicker.
This "rut" will always happen. One can only do steps to handle these ruts the right way. What I like to go by is: "if you don't take the break, the break will take itself"
muggshot Exactly me. I barely sleep one night, I’m dead tired all day for my classes. Come home and nap, get nothing done, stay up all night doing nothing because I napped all day.
Joe Nobos same. I stayed home from classes today to catch up on sleep, and tomorrow my morning lab is cancelled so I get two days of a little break. It’s much needed.
Thank you. Those cycles of extreme good and bad feelings for months is basically my life. Though I have a safety setup I still manage to fall into those dark ruts. At this point I feel like I'm a failure because I didn't stick to my strategies. Helps to see that so many others struggle with that, too.
Ever since I had a panic attack, I have been suffering from depressive spirals, anxiety, depersonalization and derealization. Back then, I used to be unmotivated too but I was somewhat still happy. I need to get my life back.

1. Utilize the do-something principle: Do ANYTHING cause that will motivate you to do something else. I.e. you have an essay due, make it your goal to write just a random sentence or write for one minute. You will tend to keep writing once you start. 2. Reward yourself for small wins: You have two sides of your brain. The higher more logical brain and the primal more emotional brain. You need to NEGOTIATE with the primal side by giving yourself rewards. So if you use the do-something principle and you get tired or agitated, reward yourself afterwards by taking a break, even if your higher brain says you should be doing more. 3. Progressive overload: instead of yo-yoing between massive action and then long periods of self destruction, massage yourself into a more productive life by GRADUALLY doing more and more, keeping in mind tip 1 and 2 (doing something and rewarding yourself).
Thank you!!! I was just hoping for this exact summary! I took a screenshot of your comment on my phone, and the whole thing even fit on one screen. Super convenient. You’re awesome.
Could someone elaborate on the co-op between the logical and primal part of the brain? How do you «align» these two parts of the brain over time, so they work together

Larissa Pienaar, confusion and pain is not what God wants. That’s what men choose when we disregard or ignore completely Gods words in the Bible. If we read His word (the Bible) he tells us all clearly What His will is. He loves us all and can heal anything but we must turn to Him for that healing. Most people, including me before I was born again, think that we have so much logic that we can argue away God. We’re we there when he created everything? Can man create even one grain of sand from nothing? No. Are we Holy? We aren’t. But The God of creation is holy and righteous and rather than us fighting against him without understanding, we should try to throw off our pride and seek to understand Him. God is so good.

Holy crap I have been using the "do something method" my whole life when I feel lazy. the way my grandpa worded it to me when I was little was to just do the nearest thing. even if its to put a coke can in the trash. once you get up and moving you start wanting to do more things.
I motivate myself to study by tidying the whole apartment first..it's what works best for me, and this part feels even more rewarding than the actual work that I've done afterwards
This might sound odd but as a female I thought it might be because of my cycles/hormones etc. I feel a lot better knowing its something we all go through and it’s not because of things that are somewhat out of my control
I’m a freelance photographer and I’m usually on top of my game up and early and I recently found out I’m pregnant and ever since then I’ve been in this “self destructive” mode because I’ve been so sleepy honestly I can’t blame my hormones either bc I know what I need to do, I just can’t bring myself to do the important stuff 🤯
@@missmittens4526 hey, don't be too hard on yourself :) it's normal to feel extra lethargic during the first trimester because your body is working very hard to adjust and adapt to accommodate your smolbean. It will get better after the 14th week or so. Congratulations by the way :)
@@missmittens4526 I’m 8 months post baby now and I was in your boat. 1. Yes hormones play a huge role. Your body is working overdrive every single second of the day to prepare and support this baby inside you. Literally you are living for 2! 2. Give yourself a break because pregnancy is not easy. Yes it’s a physical change but you change emotionally, mentally and spiritually so try to fuel yourself positively. Take it one day at a time. 3. Talk to your doctor. Since your body is working hard you have to make sure you are getting enough vitamins and nutrients that your body needs. This changed the game for me. Sleeping 12+ hours is perfectly normal in pregnancy. A lot happens while you are asleep. I talked to my midwife about all this and she suggested some vitamin supplements. I was already anemic and so the pregnancy was causing an iron deficiency. Once I started incorporating the advised supplements and switching my diet around to support both of us I started having more energy and feeling a little more okay. Trust me it gets better, just give yourself Grace.❤️🙂

Before Christmas I finished a huge house project that made the whole first floor so much nicer, this was right on the heels of gutting and redoing the kitchen, then the holidays were great, then I went on a cruise and I was even better. I'm always doing or planning something, but I decided to take a pause until March, now it is late January and after nearly a month of doing nothing, I am unmotivated and sad. Knowing I am not supposed to do anything for another month has me watching TV for hours a day, my joints are hurting, I'm getting sick and feel life sucks. Working and doing projects makes me tired, but it makes me happy too. Thanks for telling me that I need to get moving again!
I had this about 5 years ago. I was doing awesome in life. I lost 50 pounds and I did great at school. Then out of nowhere my dog and Grandpa died. A few months after that, my grandma got a stroke and could never walk again. I fell back into gaining weight again and doing very bad at school. At one point I weight over 270 pounds at 180cm... I stayed like this for 4 years and dropped down 2 levels on school. Now FINALLY, I've seen the light and started working out again. Now I lost 30 pounds and I'm doing great at college😁
I’m in a similar situation, minus the family losses (very sorry to hear that), and I used to be so on top of everything. People always told me how amazed they were with me, but it also felt like more pressure to keep it going. I’ve gained a bunch of weight back, and barely do anything each day. This is the second time I’m watching this video, because I really need to get out of this rut

Great advice!! Doing something small basically undoes the paralysis. My guess is we actually need breaks but guilt extends the rest period because we feel driven to not fail. With that mindset a rest can feel like failure and then that feels overwhelming and we slip. So the balance you mentioned as an ultimate goal is definitely true. It just might take some time to get there. Very helpful!! 😅

Been in a 3 month rut, and it got pretty bad. I lost my job, i defaulted on a couple bills, but recently I started to feel the motivation to get up again. So right now I’ve started with simply hitting the gym.

Kristoffer Persson oh come on. You can’t figure out that you feel bad because you’re binging tv? Seriously ?
You think that's a rut?!...I don't have the motivation to finish this...
as someone who regularly struggles with executive dysfunction, this video is very helpful! i do a couple of these already- the “do something principal” is basically how i get anything done lol. giving yourself extremely easy goals that would be nearly impossible NOT to do is a great way to trick your brain into starting on tasks you put off. (and if you really don’t end up doing anything beyond that easy first goal, at least you got a little done instead of nothing!)
i especially learned from the 2nd and 3rd strategies. i tend to want to ride the high of motivation and end up tiring myself out, putting myself in a brand new rut. even though i know it isn’t working, it’s hard to convince yourself in the moment that taking a bunch of small breaks and rewarding yourself before you’re even that tired is a good idea. hearing someone talk about the logic behind the method is really good for silencing the part of my mind that insists i’m being lazy for not getting everything done in one sitting.

THANK YOU!

Haven't seen one joke yet 🤔 what are you referring to?
I really appreciate your comment and the perspective it brings. When you consider the alternative to taking time to reboot being checking one's self in to a mental healthcare facility to force downtime, it makes it seem much more needful/necessary. That perspective allows me to feel like less of a slug for taking time to rest and reboot. Thank you.
Thanks for your comment. Burn out is very natural.
Raiders Lover yes! You hit the nail on the head.
The first 1 minute is a literal description of my current life!

Emily Anne (and everyone) check out Dr. Carolyn Leaf. She is a Neuroscientist and a Christian, she talks about the science behind mental strongholds and how the Bible is scientific and teaches us how to get past these issues by the renewing of our mind and drawing close to the Lord.
