That's the one gem in the entire list. Guard your eyes is kinda BS filler stuff. Sheep will continue to be sheep. A tip on YT isn't going to change that fact. At the risk of sounding sexist...that's what men are supposed to do. Do it.
On the topic of "chosen suffering"- that was my dad’s philosophy when he taught me to drive. He always made me take the busiest roads or drive in challenging conditions, thinking that if I got comfortable with discomfort in a "safe" environment, I'd be more resilient later on. While I don’t dislike the philosophy, I feel like there has to be a balance. Instead of building my confidence, his approach made driving feel stressful, and I never learned to actually enjoy it. There’s a fine line between learning through discomfort and creating a lasting sense of dread-and finding that balance might be the key to making "chosen suffering" truly effective.
Just a thought: try to challenge yourself in a sustainable way, one step at a time - not too little (boredom), and not too much (one step forward but to steps back). The difficulty is balance and consistency (in gym strength training, it's called progressive overload). That's why the first step is to know yourself: what do you like and dislike; what's your strengths and weaknesses, etc. Compare yourself only with your yesterday's self and see the progress. Don't make the mistake and compare yourself to others - because you don't know their journey and hardships/life lessons they've overcame. Life is a different kind of race, and in the end, you're only competing with yourself. Be kind to yourself to keep maintaining positive outlook for progressive overload aka. "chosen suffering".
If you trusted your father you would have known what his intentions were and that he would be there to swoop in the moment you felt overwhelmed. I believe that it also depends on your mindset and from this you experience the world. You were negative and apprehensive about his teaching methods, Perhaps you did not trust him or the relationship between you was not a solid one. At the end of it all, once you understand or rather familiarize yourself with the "discomfort" of that situation its easy to excel in it the next time you feel it. You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your practice. Personally i hated working out, but once i started understanding this discomfort and getting used to it, my mindset about working out completely changed.. Embrace the suck!
This is a great thought. If the suffering is too big a step, we don't overcome it, so we never build the overcoming muscle up -- and on top of that, we have suffered!
I have felt this imense sense of insecurity. I tried to combat it by achieving fitness goals. Somehow in my mind I was convinced if I became stronger people would like me more. Now im here and its still the same. Dont get me wrong, exercise does make my life alot better in a lot of ways, and people even compliment me on my goals. Yet still, it doesnt fill the void. It feels like fighting to keep your head above water. A constant struggle to try to prove yourself. A week ago in a meditation I felt a surge of surrender. A feeling of 'let me be weak' giving into the fear. And for some reason i felt a sigh of relief No more need to proof anything. No more need to keep my head above water. It felt like peace It's like I broke through a wall, like the negative thoughts didnt had any meaning anymore. Ofcoures this was a moment, and the old feeling came back a day after that. But it does seem to give me a different sense of direction
That's good! Your surrender sounded a bit like what Eckhart Tolle experienced and described in Chapter 1 of The Power of Now. Also, you countered the "what you resist, persists". All the best!
I understand you man. Sometimes you don't have the strength of fighting every day. But let me tell you it's totally worth it, so don't totally stop trying and relax sometimes. It's ok
Similar thing I realized recently. All these goals that I have which I sometimes pursue intensely for short bursts, most of which I never even start chasing, are, in essence, me trying to make myself "more acceptable" to some outside person I couldn't even name. It's insecurity all the way down. Which sucks cause I always thought I'd gotten over that brutally insecure phase once I left my teens but I guess it's still the same, I just learned to effectively mask it to the point where not even I even notived it anymore. But as you say, I know that chasing these things won't change the inherent insecurity. The goalpost will just move and shift and I will never be good enough either way. Learning to be okay with yourself as you are, even though you're so very imperfect, is a real tough one lmao. (Not saying that you shouldn't change at all obviously, it's the WHY that's important here.)

About #4, I think the phrase "you can't hate yourself into a version of yourself that you love" is definitely one of the biggest lessons I learned in my 20s. Shame was such a big part of my identity, and I felt stuck in this mindset. I'm now 31 and so much happier with my imperfect self. A much healthier approach to life is to ask yourself "what do I dislike in my life right now, what am I not proud of? And how can I improve those things, so I can start feeling better just by knowing I'm taking action?". Two big examples for me somewhat recently was that my freelance job 1- didn't fulfill me, and 2- made me too sedentary and lead to weight gain and sluggishness. So I took it easy and took steps to fix those things while staying gentle with myself. Today, I've lost the extra weight and feel much stronger and energetic thanks to exercise, and I'm still taking steps to change careers, while also trying to make my current one happier! It takes work and time, but it's worth it. Embrace the daily improvements you make, don't just dream about the results. Love yall ♥
This really clicks with the stuff I have been reading in Casanova: The path to success, wealth and love. It's a masterpiece in my opinion, and the author has released two new books this week (both about dating life and relationships).
Thank you for this Joey. Been watching since 2019, you have been one of my biggest motivators on this platform. I cannot tell you how much your work has gotten me out of ruts. Now. To go do the THING.
I do this thing recently where I don't shy away from re-reading a paragraph or page, or chapter or few pages in book. It is hard because somewhere in our brain we are in a rush to finish the book, even if we don't say it. And I do it with shorts too, it is very hard to watch same video multiple times the instinct is to move on to the next thing. But I'm going to watch it again, and I want to take notes this time. Because it is surprising how much I needed to hear all of this.
Thanks on sharing this valueable information! I wanna add this : You should change your inputs to change your outputs, but the function(relationship between inputs & outputs) changes over time, since it's based on your past. You shouldn't treat life as a rigid machine, which is indeed a comforting view, but as a playful interaction with yourself.
This is probably one of the most valid videos on RUclips: everyone, no matter your situation in life, needs to hear it because at some time in the future you’ll wish you had.
I don't think I've ever commented before but your videos are so great! You always find really interesting and inspirational content here. Just wanted to share.
This advice may sound motivational, but it’s packed with flaws that don’t hold up under scrutiny. First off, Telling people “nobody’s on their way” might sound empowering, but it sets up an isolating, cynical worldview that ignores the reality that we all rely on each other. Life isn’t just about standing alone; it’s about forming connections, building trust, and knowing when to ask for help. The advice to “guard your eyes” assumes that complete control over your attention is possible or even healthy-when in reality, exposure to diverse ideas and experiences, even distracting ones, can lead to unexpected growth. This “guarding” approach can turn you into a rigid gatekeeper of your own mind, missing out on the richness of life. Then there’s the whole “change your inputs to change your outputs” cliché lol. as if external tweaks alone could solve deep-seated issues. This advice leans heavily on external changes and gives an easy excuse to blame everything around you instead of dealing with your own habits, choices, and mindset. The idea that “there’s nothing wrong with you” is a comforting lie that glosses over the hard truth-self-improvement requires facing your flaws. Thinking you’re “fine as you are” sounds nice, but it’s an excuse to avoid the brutal self-assessment that real change demands. “Embrace chosen suffering” is another half-baked notion that glorifies hardship for its own sake. Pushing yourself is valuable, sure, but valorizing pain as a pathway to growth ignores the importance of balance and wisdom. This approach risks making struggle your identity, trapping you in a loop of unnecessary hardship. This one -- “get hyped” is flimsy advice dressed up as motivation--relying on hype to push through challenges is a short-lived solution that crashes quickly. Hype doesn’t breed discipline, and trying to “get excited” about difficult tasks is a poor substitute for the kind of deep-seated motivation that actually drives sustainable progress. Each piece of this advice has an alluring ring, but none hold up to the realities of what it takes to genuinely grow and succeed.
Let's reframe it: 1. Don't wait, start assisting yourself immediately. Someone else cannot start this process for you. 2. Be intentional about your attention. Spend it like a budget. 3. Examine the familiar. Things closest to you are invisible, be aware of them. 4. Don't hate yourself for past mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, you can grow and move on without shame. 5. Something is going to be hard, but you can choose what it is. Difficult preparation is healthier than the difficulty of being unprepared. 6. Don't overthink it. Some tasks are unpleasant no matter how they are approached, but if they are necessary the only solution is to do them anyway.
Talk about analysis paralysis. All advice can be scrutinized if you are a pessimist. It won’t get you anywhere. These tips are good, but it was not meant to be an end all, be all. And it seems like this is an AI generated response…so maybe stop trolling people that are doing good and do something good yourself. Best of luck to you.
here is my the three things from this video that resonated with me the most : 1- Look at something to focus on it Genuinely helpful and applicable instantly, want to play guitar, just look at it 30 sec and it will become natural to get it, want to get out of your bed, look at your door handle etc 2-You will always be scared of suffering No matter the confort the money the happiness you will always be scared of suffering, so make it be something you’re used to. I think it’s actually really motivating, idk want to tell someone you love them but scared ? well do it and if it turns out great then great if it turns out bad you’ll become stronger at facing suffering and be thankful of becoming stronger 3-Stop using self hatred as motivation I always treat myself like a rubber ball that i squeeze by hating it a lot until i can’t handle it anymore and i jump very high and fall very fast. Everyone could has reasons to hate themselves, happy people just don’t do it
I'd also add kind of my own take on #4: stop yourself from doing more than you planned and need to do during the day. This may be part of my OCD, but it easily slipped into productivity becoming my self worth and me questioning every bit of my leisure time wondering what I "should" be doing and if I'm worthy of love yet. Obviously it is crucial we meet our own needs and do work with stuff like exercise and cooking and education, not denying that, but it can also breach a barrier where all that runs through your mind is an obsession with productivity and it burns you out quick. I still dont really know how to do things without my mind ruminating on all of the shoulds I set for myself. Best thing I've found yet overall for an OCD ADHD brain like mine is The Bullet Journal Method by Ryder Caroll. I'd say that books lays out nearly everything you need for both organization and your mental wellbeing. Love your content Joey, and it continues to inspire me to keep working on treating my depression. I just wanted to point out a pitfall for me.
The *BIGGEST* impact to my productivity this month was turning off RUclips’s watch history. It deletes your entire home page and removes 100% of the attention traps
You have to be one of if not my favorite. First you don’t have to make a video every day. And your content is valuable without having to have some guru. I really love your approach. Thanks
Thank you for sharing and the first point resonates. I had to make the change after 32 years of neglect, negativity, and depression. I disappeared for 8 years, and I'm so glad I made the move.
@betterideas Agreed.😌 You know what sounds even better? I wouldn't necessarily say that. I get that people, including myself, are the only people who can help themselves get out of a rut and change themselves for the better, but YOU came and saved US. You gave us the help we need to get the opportunities to be richer and better. As people, no matter who we are or how old we get, we always have the time to help each other out to change our stories. We give each other good tips and wisdom based on our own perspectives on reality. It's not like a fairy or someone from the future is going to suddenly appear and give us the change we want. Although, it would be pretty nice if someone from the future did come and save me.
@@jacobb8832 yeah id even say that people will help, but you just have to be willing to open your fuffin eyes for once and see the right hands reaching out to you and actually take it

Excellent video but Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Building wealth involves developing good habits regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future.., I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life!!
I do stuff that sucks every day. I have been for years. I got addicted to it, almost to the point where that's ALL I did. There was no reward. I'm now in therapy, working to undo all the damage I've done to myself trying to improve myself. Yes, I'm ready for big challenges. I've built that muscle. But I also now need to learn to relax it--both psychologically and literally. I have been tensing my body up for so long that it's a struggle, minute to minute, to relax it. Careful with how many rules you set for yourself and how austere you become. Moderation is critical.
Thanks for this video Jeremy i love the fact that you go straight to the point instead of wasting time and just showing some random sponsors in the beginning, your videos are truly a life changer.
Someone else feel like selfimprovement is in a way kinda depressing? Things that remind you how unsatisfying your current thing is.. anyways, try to stat positive and go and get it. Yeah..
@myyoutubeaccount4167 I guess everyone feels that way at some point.. but remember not to stay in that space bro. You'll find something thats like.. the thing. You know? Best of wishes
I found myself in obsession with it which caused me to take a long break. You can definitely go too far and have all your thoughts revolve around improvement. The balance is so hard for me to find
Not only is no one on their way but also no body cares. lol. And the saying “it’ll happen” never happens unless you’re putting in work daily. Nothing just comes to you when you’re just wishing for it and that’s it. You have to put in the time and really want it. Make it no other option but for it to be yours. The universe is always watching and it rewards the “relentless”. You must be relentless. When an issue arises , it’s the universe asking “yea, you really that guy?” And you have to smash that challenge and beg for more. Relentless. Only after many challenges (failures) will the universe back off and then reward you. Be relentless
Thanks Joey! For some of your points, I thought I already knew the answer until you (pleasantly) surprised me with a new perspective. Since quite a few youtubers lowered their amount of new content about self improvement, since we are getting in this era of repetition, it's so good to see you being capable of showing new ways to think about life. Thanks man!
I got divorced recently, and I'm really butthurt that a lot of people stopped interacting with me (I am really not an asshole, I am a decent dude) like my luck is an infectious disease they better not catch.
People stopped interacting and hanging with me and my mom after my dad died, even her family. it's the dynamic that people are not comfortable with anymore, having a single person over instead of a couple or a family
Life is like a path that slowly crumbles and plunges into the abyss. If you don't move, you will fall into this abyss and return will be difficult. So always keep moving and never fall into the abyss.
I love it when words of advice resonate so much that I feel so inspired - then a few days later I’m reminded that I took no action, due to having another injection of inspiration like this one. God I wish I could hold myself accountable and just do the stuff.
Thanks for sharing this video! The insights about personal responsibility and the idea that we can’t rely on others to save us resonate deeply. However, I notice that some of the language, like "need to" and "have to," could create pressure for viewers. Everyone’s journey unfolds in unique ways, and factors such as mental health and personal circumstances play significant roles in our willingness to change. An approach that embraces empathy might invite viewers to consider their own pacing in this journey. I appreciate the ideas presented and look forward to reflecting on them! Thank you!
There is a fine line between doing sucky work and working smart, suffering through something or find an efficiency - or two - first, DIYing everything or letting go through delegation, writing your own massive to do list or being guided in steps by the divine.
I want to say I really like the way you phrase things. I feel like a lot of self improvement connoisseurs use shame to motivate, but you stick to real facts.
When you realize that real life is the exact opposite of your University's current advertising campaign that's aired during College Football Saturdays... and that they are gaslighting another generation of students with false expectations in life.
I know the idea of using chosen pain to prepare for unchosen pain is well-intentioned, but there are some unchosen pains that will bring you to your knees regardless. You wont see them coming. They will hit far harder than you could fathom. You will need to learn to heal from them. Doing some situps or taking a cold shower each morning will not prepare you for all unchosen pains. But those unchosen pains that break you, will prepare you for future unchosen pains.
Great video man, one thing I'd point out about the "Chosen Suffering" bit - you should never, ever, EVER 'choose' to 'suffer'. The activities you label as 'suffering' have a tendency to become suffering even if they're not actually that bad just because you're saying "This activity is suffering, I'm going to suffer while I do this." You can be in incredible pain and not suffer, because suffering is totally in the mind. Suffering is the mind telling itself that whatever you're doing is terrible. It's like you're trying to shovel dog shit, and the whole time someone is screaming at you: "Oh my GOD you are shoveling DOG SHIT that is so AWFUL!" If you have to shovel dog shit, why would you not at least TRY to do it with peace and joy and not constantly pester yourself about how terrible it is? Once you understand that suffering is just in your mind, then you realize that you can create literally any other experience inside of yourself that you want - you just have to be doing it consciously and not impulsively. Impulsivity is just this - once upon a time you did something that created the intended effect you wanted, so your body encoded that experience to use later - now you're just doing it as a reflex because it's easier and more energy-efficient to rely on bodily reflexes than to be in a constant state of meditativeness. So to be conscious means: "I'm not going to rely on whatever is going on in my mind/body." That's how you become someone that "does a lot of things that suck" - they just stop defining those things as "sucking" and just accept responsibility for making every experience "good".

Dude LITERALLY last night I’m laying in bed at like 1 am, on your channel, like “cmon man… I need another video from you”
I cut all my subscriptions to 5. You are by far the one who delivers the most value. I highly appreciate you work. thank you!
And for some reason i felt a sigh of relief
No more need to proof anything. No more need to keep my head above water.
It felt like peace
It's like I broke through a wall, like the negative thoughts didnt had any meaning anymore.
It's ok
wait wait wait
you ENJOYED that?!
but about the feeling of drowning? loosing sense and purpose? what about guidance?
(Not saying that you shouldn't change at all obviously, it's the WHY that's important here.)

just stop, man. the last thing people watching these videos need is to read a summary because they're too lazy or unable to focus for a 15 min video. don't enable that behavior

I like men
I love how straight to the point you are in the content you create. One of the only I have seen that seem to be practicing what they preach!
Hey, thanks for the 6th tip. The problem with overthinking has been a huge part of my recent struggle.
How bizarre - I have the exact opposite problem - I wish I could stop re-reading and just move on
Thanks on sharing this valueable information!

So what would you suggest friend?
Let's reframe it:
@@TheWerewolfJesus Thank you werewolfjesus, it's easy to twist the meaning of the advice just to conclude that everything said is shit

Best of luck to you.
here is my the three things from this video that resonated with me the most :
1- Look at something to focus on it
Genuinely helpful and applicable instantly, want to play guitar, just look at it 30 sec and it will become natural to get it, want to get out of your bed, look at your door handle etc
2-You will always be scared of suffering
No matter the confort the money the happiness you will always be scared of suffering, so make it be something you’re used to. I think it’s actually really motivating, idk want to tell someone you love them but scared ? well do it and if it turns out great then great if it turns out bad you’ll become stronger at facing suffering and be thankful of becoming stronger
3-Stop using self hatred as motivation
I always treat myself like a rubber ball that i squeeze by hating it a lot until i can’t handle it anymore and i jump very high and fall very fast. Everyone could has reasons to hate themselves, happy people just don’t do it
this is brilliant

Hey man, providing so much advices and good vibes to people, I hope you yourself have been doing well. Love the content man.
Idk why but really get addicted to your better ideas and base my entire life on the concepts you talk about. Happened multiple times.

Thanks for sharing this video! The insights about personal responsibility and the idea that we can’t rely on others to save us resonate deeply. However, I notice that some of the language, like "need to" and "have to," could create pressure for viewers.
The activities you label as 'suffering' have a tendency to become suffering even if they're not actually that bad just because you're saying "This activity is suffering, I'm going to suffer while I do this."
You can be in incredible pain and not suffer, because suffering is totally in the mind. Suffering is the mind telling itself that whatever you're doing is terrible. It's like you're trying to shovel dog shit, and the whole time someone is screaming at you: "Oh my GOD you are shoveling DOG SHIT that is so AWFUL!"
If you have to shovel dog shit, why would you not at least TRY to do it with peace and joy and not constantly pester yourself about how terrible it is?
Once you understand that suffering is just in your mind, then you realize that you can create literally any other experience inside of yourself that you want - you just have to be doing it consciously and not impulsively. Impulsivity is just this - once upon a time you did something that created the intended effect you wanted, so your body encoded that experience to use later - now you're just doing it as a reflex because it's easier and more energy-efficient to rely on bodily reflexes than to be in a constant state of meditativeness. So to be conscious means: "I'm not going to rely on whatever is going on in my mind/body."
That's how you become someone that "does a lot of things that suck" - they just stop defining those things as "sucking" and just accept responsibility for making every experience "good".
Hi Joey, great video as usual. Can you make one explaining what someone should do if they are moving towards their goal and making progress enough to feel alright but not enough to achieve proper amount of success?
