Before watching this video, I used to check under my bed every night for the footlock. After watching this video, I can finally say that I no longer fear the foot lock.
Ryron, Rener, Your instruction is appreciated. As humans, here, I'm glad to see intelligent, motivated, and humble individuals such as yourself passing on the warrior's tradition. Long live BJJ. Free BJJ...
I've had the privilege to train with both Ryron and Renner. Both are phenomenal instructors and human beings. So much knowledge without the ego. Can't beat it!
@Kabamaru2000 if you try to collar choke he will bridge his hips, either your head hits the ground or your hand does. Also, your base is so weak he will simply come out the back door after the bridge....hope this helps. - Pete
I know this is 8 years ago but since he's holding your leg could you go straight to mounted triangle fall to the side and push your leg your leg through having a lot of power to do it.
gr8 defence, have a small question, dont know if it would work but it seems possible and logical. While you mount him,you could try a choke, probably collar choke,so that he would start defending then choke rather than holding on to your leg.Just asking dont wonna play it cool,if someone knows plz reply.Ryror you rock love your vids
Right, so Palhares is training in a manner that seems to be a lot different than Ryron is talking about. The environment is different at different gyms and with different partners. Ryron, I'm sure trains in a way where people are taught to keep each other safe and not injure one another. I wouldn't train at a place that I don't feel safe at. So Ryron is working on the assumption that the viewer of the video is training safely with partners who are doing the same. Correct me if I'm wrong Ryron.
My problem is I get caught by footlocks a lot but they're usually so sloppy or varied that the feet do not match the position in this video. What are some high-level ideas to keep in mind when defending this without assuming exactly where the feet will be?
Max Loh im a blue belt at a pure jiujitsu school but we don't ever learn foot locks. There is a couple of guys that know them they learned them somewhere else. So to learn to defend i watched this video and their heel hook video and implement them at an mma school on our city. I still don't know how to do heel hooks, but i did learn while getting caught over and over one trick for a straight ankle lock. When they go for it.. kick your foot deeper. For the straight ankle lock your toes to my knowledge have to be in their pits. So go deeper.
I agree. My issue isn't with tapping, it is with the attitude he espouses. Assuming that you are training for self-defense/fighting and not sport "the worst thing that happens" isn't that you tap. The worst thing that happens is you are beaten, bloodied or killed. Very different perspective. I would argue, being that BJJ is still marketed as "self-defense" or "fighting" it is not a far-out assumption to make. BJJ is having a hard time determining whether it is fighting or sport.
Bro. He is talking about letting yourself get footlocked during TRAINING. He did not, anywhere in the video, imply that in a real fight you should go easy on your opponent or work on your weaknesses.
@NK Yes. On the flip side it only takes a strong dude a month of training to slap on a mediocre ankle lock that can tap out people with bad leg lock defense. It's currently one of my weaknesses I'm trying to improve
I love how your techniques are designed to counter your siblings lol. You and Rener need to make more vids together, I speak for everyone when I say we like the different points of views.
He's talking about in training. Not in an MMA match or in a street fight. If you put yourself in dangerous situations in the gym you can handle them when the time comes.
Great video, but after just watching Ryron and Renner talk about how to pick a school for the last hour the blue gi had me laughing hard enough that I had to rewind and rewatch the first couple minutes of the video.
Question to the more experienced grapplers: What do you do against a heelhook where the partner does not use ashi garame, but has both legs/feet on the inside? How do I prevent that?
With the Death Squad on the prowl, everyone is scared of foot locks now. Also, if they are silly enough to try and use their free arm to try to frame and keep you from coming up to mount, they just gave you an armbar. Take it.
Very true sir, but where is he right now? In a gym, practicing with his friend. The worst thing that happens to him in this setting is that he taps. And because he tapped, he can talk with Scott Lewis about how he had a shitty escape and how he can improve it. Then he will repeat the foot lock, until he doesn't tap again. That way, if/when the day comes when a failed escape attempt results in shattered ligaments, he has already mastered the skill. He trains for both sport and street this way.
This is a good defence to a poor foot lock, but anyone who knows leg locks would not apply the foot lock like this as it is easy to defend! I would like to see the defence to the foot lock if applied correctly with a leg knot!
He is not opening his own school. They as a family will be opening another location in Beverly Hills. All the bros will be spending some time there. Ryron will just be the one who lives the closest! One family one love
It has nothing to do with a safe or unsafe environment. It has everything to do with the individual you're training with and if you know anything about Palhares, you should know that he has a reputation for breaking & dislocating limbs. He trains exactly as he fights. That's what makes his opponents fear his leg attacks. They are so petrified at the thought of him grabbing one of their limbs that they make silly mistakes. In the gym, guys even start tapping way before he applies any pressure.
I just don't get why one would sit down if he catches a footlock standing. You have more leverage and it's way harder to defend. At least I get like 95% of the footlocks standing, but i may be wrong :)
Leave your foot dangling so your opponent can put you in a foot lock and you can practice the escape, right. Rousimar Palhares would love that philosophy!
I hate the sport aspect, which is why I hate leglocks. it's dumb nonsense that only works in a padded room with an agreement not to just kick the shit out of your opponent.
you're talking about if the guy in the blue rolled inwards towards the other foot? That's illegal in IBJJF rules. It's considered reeping the knee. Anytime you twist the knee in BJJ its illegal
Catch wrestling is a great martial art but Jiu Jitsu is better and all the techniques you mentioned have always been in Jiu Jitsu. Not because of catch wrestling but because of Japanese Jiu Jitsu.
as much as i like gracie bjj that was a shit foot lock of any sort i myself love heel hooks and i myself when i go for a heel hook i would put my legs and feet on his body and such or my favorite triangle his legs and body so he can not go for a heel hook to counter risking both of you blowing out your ACL instead of just him
Before watching this video, I used to check under my bed every night for the footlock. After watching this video, I can finally say that I no longer fear the foot lock.
if you play it at 1.5x speed, he sounds just like Rener
Holy Crap! You are right. Now we know that Rener talks EXACTLY 50% faster than Ryron.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hahaha so fucking true
KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
thats uncanny!
I watched this last night. And pulled this exact thing off this morning. Thanks Ryron, you are the man - much appreciated.
Ryron, Rener,
Your instruction is appreciated. As humans, here, I'm glad to see intelligent, motivated, and humble individuals such as yourself passing on the warrior's tradition.
Long live BJJ. Free BJJ...
I have a diverse back ground in leg locks and I got to tell you that Ryron's instruction is the real deal. It's sound teaching! Thanks,
I've had the privilege to train with both Ryron and Renner. Both are phenomenal instructors and human beings. So much knowledge without the ego. Can't beat it!
That belly down transition looks like a checkmate, you really must block that knee at all costs.
Thanks master Ryron.
Rener and Ryron are so great at reminding us that Jiu Jitsu is FUN
Ryron has come to the place I train a number of times. He's a great instructor and really good guy.
Ryron you are an excellent teacher. Thank you.
This guy is amazing and underrated !
Great instruction and attitude, thank you sir!
Superior teaching ability. Thank you.
Excellent technique & presentation.
Love this style of teaching.
Wonderful technique and have to learn to be ahead or be able to read your opponent next move......thanks again Ryron Gracie :-)
@Kabamaru2000 if you try to collar choke he will bridge his hips, either your head hits the ground or your hand does. Also, your base is so weak he will simply come out the back door after the bridge....hope this helps. - Pete
Thank you so much for this Ryron!!!!
Absolutely correct, the leg knot and saddle is completely illegal because of the 'reap the knee' rule. It makes defending stupidly easy.
I know this is 8 years ago but since he's holding your leg could you go straight to mounted triangle fall to the side and push your leg your leg through having a lot of power to do it.
YOU ARE THE MAN 🥋
thanks homie 👍
Jesus thank you i met him in real life a very respectful guy great vid
Love that guy . So much knowledge and sooooo cool .
Brilliant video
Great vid again guys!
gr8 defence, have a small question, dont know if it would work but it seems possible and logical. While you mount him,you could try a choke, probably collar choke,so that he would start defending then choke rather than holding on to your leg.Just asking dont wonna play it cool,if someone knows plz reply.Ryror you rock love your vids
I love the way he makes it look.so.easy
So well demonstrated and explained, as always 🙏🤗🥋
Right, so Palhares is training in a manner that seems to be a lot different than Ryron is talking about. The environment is different at different gyms and with different partners. RYRON WHAT A LEGEND!!!!

I loooooove this
I’m not afraid anymore
Nice......im sure ryon gets tired of complements but he needs his own association....hez gotta a huge fan base
1:43 -Bring your leg through.... CONTROLLING IT hahaha love ur style ryron
Ossss thank you professor!

You’re a special kind of f*cking stupid aren’t ya bud?
@NK Yes. On the flip side it only takes a strong dude a month of training to slap on a mediocre ankle lock that can tap out people with bad leg lock defense. It's currently one of my weaknesses I'm trying to improve
Dude goes for the foot like a ninja commando
i dont like the guy but Im always impressed with his technique ! he is very detailed !
I love how your techniques are designed to counter your siblings lol. You and Rener need to make more vids together, I speak for everyone when I say we like the different points of views.
Exactly don't fear the door lock, but fear the heel hook..
He's talking about in training. Not in an MMA match or in a street fight. If you put yourself in dangerous situations in the gym you can handle them when the time comes.
2:20 '... when I mount Rener...' !
:-)
+ Doc Hudson That was a microphone getting bumped.
Great video, but after just watching Ryron and Renner talk about how to pick a school for the last hour the blue gi had me laughing hard enough that I had to rewind and rewatch the first couple minutes of the video.
THANK YOU!! I got my foot beat up like 5 times tonight
Question to the more experienced grapplers:

13 Footlock specialists hated this video.
precious stuff
What happens if the opponent doesn't start with Ashi but goes straight to cross Ashi?
This is a good defence to a poor foot lock, but anyone who knows leg locks would not apply the foot lock like this as it is easy to defend! I would like to see the defence to the foot lock if applied correctly with a leg knot!

This video was made before he was footlocked by Josh Barnett?
great advice
Got to be fast to pull this off.
thx; last time I got caught into that, I grabbed the guy by the collar and putted the boot, but stayed there for the whole round.
oh this is very cool and so simple. "The Simple Way"
It is just like playing chess. Use your mind as you move.
Rousimar Palhares would love that philosophy!
got tapped with this today hahaah
Right on!
sick bro
what would you do if he fell to your other side?
Got caught twice last week, I'm going to try and get trapped by the same guy and escape. Thanks.
Would any jiujitsu practitioner love bjj as much if it were just a form of self defense and not a sport?
being that there are millions of practitioners....im going to go with yes
I hate the sport aspect, which is why I hate leglocks. it's dumb nonsense that only works in a padded room with an agreement not to just kick the shit out of your opponent.
Thanks.

🔥🔥🔥
That would be amazing
love it
"The problem is when I mount Rener, he re-inserts the knee...." Not many people can say that haha.
Catch wrestling is a great martial art but Jiu Jitsu is better and all the techniques you mentioned have always been in Jiu Jitsu. Not because of catch wrestling but because of Japanese Jiu Jitsu.
If you get the mount you're in a "one in one out" situation so...
1:22 unless Palhares is across of you
There is a video of Rousimar Palhares trying to snap his sparring partner ankle in training because he wouldn't tap.
as a lakeforest open and mind reader games chess champ, i can tell you right now, this is nothing like playing chess.
HA HA excellent!
"What's the worst thing that happens? You tap!" Truly, BJJ has become a "sport"...
he is reffering to the training part... not when fighting. during training you need to try stuff again and again...
20 people still fear the footlock
This would be suicide against Palhares, though. That guy is a Tank who trains nothing but leg locks and bicep curls.
2:43
Haha. You're funny.
thumbs up if you heard fart @ 2:03
how many stripes does ryron have on his belt!!?? is that a joke or is he like grandmaster ryron now
as much as i like gracie bjj that was a shit foot lock of any sort
i myself love heel hooks and i myself when i go for a heel hook i would put my legs and feet on his body and such
or
my favorite triangle his legs and body so he can not go for a heel hook to counter risking both of you blowing out your ACL instead of just him
4 thumbs down, that makes four gimps.
And give up your back?
00:57
Helios Gracie lost to a ankle
2023…yeah…don’t do this.
Do you know who Ryron Gracie is? do you have a clue of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ?
