Bernardo Faria is a 5x World Champion. Bernardo started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Juiz de Fora - MG, Brazil at the age of 14 in 2001. After receiving the Black Belt from his first instructor Ricardo Marques in 2008, He moved to Sao Paulo to join BJJ legend Fabio Gurgel and his Alliance team. After many years of training and winning many major titles, Bernardo moved to NYC in 2013 to train and teach at Marcelo Garcia Academy. In 2015 Bernardo achieved his dream of winning the IBJJF World Championship Open class title and his division, doing the double Gold and becoming the 1st in the IBJJF Ranking and also chosen as the best athlete of 2015.
Bernardo Faria has now taken on the mission to share some of the lessons, techniques, experiences and more that he has learned along in his 16 years and counting as a BJJ student, teacher and world class competitor.

I have to admit i thought Ryan was a stiff A hole, but having started to digest these instructional videos etc he really is a down to earth hardcore professional. Alot of up tight athleets would at least smirk at Bernardos english but here we are, twenty videos deep and its all business. Well done Mr. Ryan, true champion.

Thank you both for this video! The BJJ I learned 15 years ago is mostly obsolete now thanks to the scientific approach of Danaher and Gordon Ryan.
Then you must have learned some terrible Jiu-Jitsu because this is not new…
@@BetterWokeThanAsleep2 There were a few leg attacks taught back then (kneebar, heelhook and straight ankle lock) but the only defense move was to spin out of it. We rarely practiced any of it. None of the leg attack intricacies discovered by John Danaher were known back then. Danaher even admits that himself. And that's why the Danaher Death Squad dominated after adopting his teachings. Even his rear naked choke techniques (one and two hand) are revolutionary and superior to what I was taught 20 years ago. A Danaher purple belt from today would destroy and humiliate 95% of black belts from 2005.

i needed this, i asked my instructor about this but says we dont need to learn it as wb's. ( i keep getting leg locked in sparring)
Who is leg locking a white belt? Y'all don't know when you're in danger and can mess your own leg up. Anyways, that's just when you get to become a higher belt. I assume your instructor thinks no one is leg locking white belts when they actualy are.
@@RonniiVstraight ankle locks are allowed at all levels in any competition setting and the other ones, though dangerous, should be learned early on rather than later but applied slowly and tapped to quickly (heel hook, for instance).

@RonniiV I don't know if this is the case for op, but before I did any competition or got any belt in bjj, I had been training almost everday for 3 years

Given that the instructor says don’t worry about it, you think he meant don’t worry about defending straight ankle locks or don’t worry about defending heal hooks or toeholds? Why would the instructor say don’t worry for a submission he expects white belts to encounter? Also, I agree leg locks should be learned early but listen to what the guy said, his instructor is not teaching him. He has no idea if he is in outside or inside ashi, so he doesn’t know what escape applies where. So he doesn’t know what’s going on, his instructor is not teaching him, and he’s being used by some upper belt who also is clearly not explaining anything. How the heck is you saying “It helps to learn early” help in this situation?

So the principle here is that you never let your opponent put his belly down, facing the mat, that way you avoid him finishing you in a Aquilis or heel hook.
