I really need to try this. Without collector I'm not sure the Philosopher's stone is that good, because the second upgrade costs so much, it takes ages to pay itself back.
@@roguebrothers If you rush the item upgrade, with collector trait at the beginning, you are set for early to near mid game, as long as you still plan at least a little. Philo's stone is so very useless as a item gotten later and even worse without collector trait. I've only ever done Very Hard difficulty once, so I can't say it's good for that. But all my Hard difficulty runs I start it like that.

My favorite thing to do is place archers on the front of the enemy and step back before the boat gets to land, most of the time there's only 2-3 or even 0 enemies on the boat before they reach the shore, then let the pike men and the infantry squish them. Wouldn't advise doing this against archers or giant archers though
One thing you've talked about in your playthrough videos but not in this one is how you spread out spending gold on unit upgrades throughout a playthrough. Like mid game it's great to have at least 5 or 6 commanders with a special ability, item and/or upgraded base strength so that you can consistently take on 2-3 islands per round. Late game it starts to make sense to only upgrade the 4 troops you will be bringing to the last island and try to get them as strong as possible, then use your intermediate strength troops for easier islands and don't even bother using your weak / non-upgraded troops before moving on to the next level if you are several ahead. I went back and forth about whether to give Jabena to a troop with a useful trait since they can get used the most through your playthrough, but since that eats up the item slot it's also less likely you'll want to bring them to the last island. Ultimately if I decided that getting Jabena early or mid game it's worth putting some upgrades into that commander but not fully upgrading them since you lose the item slot that could be more useful on hard islands. Some of my favorite combos are similar to what you said. Ultimately I feel like 2x infantry, 1x pike and 1x archer is the best combo for the hardest levels, so keep that in mind if you are tempted to give the bomb to one archer and ring of command to another as you likely won't use them at the same time. Some combos I like: Ring of command + heavy weapons on archers Bomb / mines + sure footed / heavy load on pikes War horn + ironskin on infantry War hammer + energetic on infantry
You make some very good points! It took me a while to realise the last island is a massive difficulty spike compared to the islands before it and you need to prepare well in advance!

another tip for items! for pikemen, its best to use a self defense item in case your pikes get overrun for archers, either same for pikes or ring of command, like the video said. for infantry, i find the horn that gives you reinforcements to be the best, since you will lose your units often because they are close range, having the ability to heal your army instantly is so good! any item on infantry is good for them because they are versatile, so feel free to use any item you want on them!
Watching your first tip video + this one, makes me want to play pikes a lot more than I do... Also, so happy you are still playing this wonderful game. I simply love it. I like having sure-footed for my infantry so I can keep them on the shore line so they can easily deal with any archers or brute archers while keeping their shields up and ready, that’s just my opinion however and im interested to try them on pikes as well.
@@roguebrothers sure-footed is not recommended on pikes as the distance and time your pikes have to kill the vikings decreases. If you put your pikes near shorelines, your pikes are guaranteed going to lose a pike and break formation.
A great tip is to clean up as many. Easy Islands as you can to go for the special rewards, extra squads and coins to upgrade. Then back track to the big difficult islands.
A combo you can use against the giant archers is infantry + archers or pikemans but the infantri is crusial. At first their shields look useless against them but u have to put them in the right posision in the right direction. But if u use pikeman and infantry the pikemen should have the ability otherwise they are useless in the combo
so funny story, ive loved this game for years now but always on and off, id be in a vicious cycle of: play game again after like a year start new game to get a fresh feeling go do something else don't play for a year repeat but ive finally clicked with it and actually am now at the end, the final island. big issue though, i had one pikeman squad and they all died, meaning im in a very bad situation for the final island. not looking for advice or anything specificly just thought itd be funny to share.
I played this game a couple of years ago and just came back, such a fun simple game, with lots of strategies to play with. Question tho, and I'm assuming the answer is no but just checking, is there a way to reassign items to troops? Quite a few times I've wanted to switch things around but can't seem to find anything that let's you do it. So assuming that's a no?
You're right. You can't re-assign items. You need to plan who you put your items on carefully. Sometimes I will hold an item for a while without assigning it so I can put it on a character with a suitable trait.

I feel like warhammer does more harm than good. I accidentally launch a majority of my troops into the sea, which leaves me at a disadvantage... Of course thats just me and my 2 braincells not using it very wisely

Why does age of frostfall and "clones" alike advertise this type of gameplay mini games while in depth seem like city builder and conquer type Sad that they try to lure people with better unit style, dragons, and deceiving ad's I just want to play what I am seeing now with bad north
what a load of bs (but not really) I had 2x archers and 2x pikes And the game doesnt tell you that pikes shouldnt be staying right where the ships lands because this is how i just lost 1 squad (but got them back with the holy grail) idk they just fall back as if the ship hit them
-Warhammers cooldown is decreased with energetic, it will take about 2 waves of ships for it to recharge (30-45 seconds I would say) -If Dual wielders are coming for your pikes, put them on a stairway choke point. Dual wielders cannot leap uphill, letting pikes safely kill them without getting stunned and overwhelmed -The Ironskin trait really ramps up when you upgrade them to veteran, I like to use it with a starting commander to quickly upgrade them and clear more islands faster - Mountain commanders are very resistant and much more aggressive to enemies, I’ve had one take 2 hits from a brute, kill the brute, and still live -Dont use Jabena a with a commander whose trait could be valuable late game, you’ll have plenty of commanders then (I like mountain with jabena) -Be careful with mines, I’ve had an island where only 1 commander was alive, had him place a mine, and get blown up along with the enemies, winning the island with nobody alive after. Mines are great starting items with heavy load , can easily use choke points and make them deadly -Menu has alternate intro music sometimes -Challenge yourself with limitations (no houses burned, no items, no skills, militia only)
Yeah, it can depend on the terrain sometimes. The beserkers have less of a chance to leap up if the stairway is leading into the tile with the pikes, rather than if it is perpendicular to the ledge@@V1n2c3nt

Pikes when used right are amazing! They are also able to defeat early islands on their own which can be very helpful to get some early coins

Very useful. I like fleet foot on archers to kite around and lose little less dps while moving.
I usually only level pikemen to veteran, forget about my archers, and pour everything into a few infantrys
I like having sure-footed for my infantry so I can keep them on the shore line so they can easily deal with any archers or brute archers while keeping their shields up and ready, that’s just my opinion however and im interested to try them on pikes as well.

gives you an extra use of any ability, so like gives you an extra bomb or mine. Am not exactly sure what it does for like war hammer and your skills.
It adds an extra use to war horn, mines and bombs only. All other items get no benefit from the trait.

Yeah the last level is a big difficulty spike! Normally after the start I pull back to a choke point and try to hold there

That only applies to certain stairways chokepoints. I find that berserkers are still able to leap uphills.
