Hi Mr. Ricketts I bought a used Delta 31-250 Sander from my hardwood supplier for $100. One of the top rollers was missing but the replacement parts came with the sander. I put that in with no problem. I then wanted to check the bearings of the bed raising system. I watched your video, which is excellent. One of the lock nuts came off very easily, the bearing was fine so I lubed it a bit and put it back together. The problem came when I tried the next lock nut. I ended up holding the timing gear underneath with a channel lock while my wife used a crescent wrench to remove the nut. Long story short, the nuts on two of the lifters I tried to take apart were so tight that we broke the hubs of the timing gears. Now I am searching the internet to find replacement timing gears. I am not having a lot of luck. Since the three bearings I saw were in good shape I decided not to attempt to remove the fourth lock nut above the main drive gear. I hope your sander is still performing nicely. Very Best Regards,

As a follow up to my post 3 weeks ago, I have found a source for the timing gears that I broke. I am buying two new gears from the company and they will be shipped in less that a week. The company is State Tool Gear Co. in Newark, NJ. Phone 973-642-6181 and ask for Mike. Since they no have the pattern, they can probably make gears for you even faster.

I'd found that the nut on the stem bolts were too tight and so the cranking was to tight.
I had to hold the crank and loosen the nut until the washers and bearing could spin freely...and left it. That did it.
The previous owner cranked it while too tight and striped the plastic gears which are $50 if you can fine them.
Many parts on these things are discontinued. The pivot bushings bearings are $150 each

Thanks for watching. I can't for the life of me find where I bought those bearings but it was under $20 for the 3 bearings. Sometimes bearings may feel good when removed but have flat spots and stick under load. The only other tips are to not over tighten the nuts and not over tighten the belt. Thanks for the part number of the bevel gears. Do you remember the cost of the gears. I am sure this is something other viewers will be interested in.

Here's my experience with this machine:
Table height wheel was very difficult to turn. Belt was skipping teeth now and then, which throws the table out of alignment a tiny bit with each skipped tooth. I replaced the belt, hoping a fresh belt would work better. While I had the belt off, I performed the service shown in this video.
    No improvement.
One viewer recommended greasing the needle bearings, so I did that. I also loosened the large nuts on the four table posts to finger tight.
Voila! Table height wheel turns easier than ever! No skipped teeth either!
Will report back after some use.

@@bullfrogpondshop3179 , thanks for your attention. Yes, makes sense that this nut should be just touching the washer-bearing-washer pile, and not crunching them. In my machine, I needed to screw this nut a little bit more using a wrench, to get no gaps between the nut and the w-b-w pile, taking care to still allow them to move freely side to side but not up and down. I did this yesterday. But it is still skipping teeth, unfortunately. Since I took all three posts (all except the one with a jam nut) apart and cleaned and lubricated all parts, including the now infamous thrust bearings, my last guess for the culprit is the timing belt. I took it off and although it looks okay, maybe 15 years of service being used eventually with more tension that it would be recommended, resulted in some stretch. The problem now will be to find a replacement, since I live in Brazil. I tried to Google the codes printed in it, but got no valuable information. Do you know some Goodyear online retailer that I could try? Thanks again!
UPDATE: I just found it in Amazon. I’ll place an order and let you know if it worked.

Great video. Followed right along, and replaced the three roller bearings.....moves up/down pretty well.
My kid got this used; didn't work quite right so he gave it to me to sort it out.
My problem now is the conveyer belt. I can't get it to remain stationery. It moves to the right and no matter how much I turn the adjustment (clockwise) I can't stop it. At this point, the length on the right side (front roller to back roller is 32 1/8" while the left side is 32 1/16"....but she still drifts right.
The rollers looked a bit worn, so I sanded them down to smooth 'em out. The belt is definitely not pretty, but seems to be intact.....although along the edges it sometimes does not lie flat.
Not sure what else to do to get the belt stationery. I've seen a new belt on Amazon for $50; just don't want to waste my money if that's not the problem.
    Suggestions most appreciated.

Mine does the same but not enough to tear the belt up. I was going to try to flip the belt end for end and see if it tracks the opposite direction. That would tell if the belt is stretched on one side. Also I would check the head roller to make sure it is straight to start with.

Thanks for the great vid! My question, is I see that you seem to be missing the support plate? It works without it? Maybe that’s a factor? According to the parts diagram, there should be a large rectangular plate (406130720006) that rests on the 2 support bars that span the 4 threaded rods just under the bed.
