About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. I was thinking before you started that a wooden spacer on top with matching holes could be used and then bolted together, then no clearance would have changed from the original. As long as it works is the main thing, as everyone has different ways of getting the jobs accomplished. Nice work!!! I really like how things pertaining to vacuums, totally suck well after modifications!!

I’m using a SuperMax 1632 and the belt is very abrasive. Your belt Sander comment is spot on. They sell replacement belts and I’m sure it would fit and solve your problem.

I am happy my comment in earlier video inspired you to make this modification. My 4in port was fibreglassed to the hood. You could have used adhesive caulk since your adapter was mounted using the two bolts.
So much better dust removal when you have decent air flow.
The manufacturer should never have used the small original port.

Great upgrade for that machine Jeremy, so much knowledge there, thank you so much for that input. Yet another machine I need 😂 do you still use the planet or does the drum sander all the jobs now? Also on a side note, whats that track you used, I love that. Gonna use that on my first video ... keep it up, I love your videos

Looks to me that rubberised belt feeding just fine. I've got an old performax (now jet) 16/32 with the sandpaper belt. it just broke at the seam yesterday. Trying to fix seems impossible, I've been trying. Costing $139 to replace it + at least 2 weeks downtime. Rubberised looks good to me right now. Nice job on the dust upgrade.
Adding a bristles skirt around may help too, if it doesn’t try to get suck it in sanded when you push a board in. Maybe magnetic so you can adjust the height depending on board thickness.
I know this video is 4 years old, but I would’ve put the extractor flange on the OUTSIDE of the lid to minimize internal airflow disruption.
Super old video and boy and I am so late to the party here. So this summer I got a Supermax 19-38 drum sander, a Laguna 1hp dust collector and upgraded to a used Grizzly combo table saw. The drum sander is awesome and superb for when you are fine tuning wood vs starting with super rough wood. Mine has a sandpaper roller table and could use the tighter vac connections like you did. The table saw is Faaaar better than my little craftsman as the Griz is so solid and I can cut sheet goods now with light killing myself. Will follow along on your stuff now I have found it.
Do you think it would allow better airflow to to round off the sharp edges on the inside of the new outlet?
Do what works for you. Could you add rubber skirt to the rear and increase suction.

Interesting, I have the Supermax, and it had the bigger dust port and the better abrasive belt. There is no slipping at all with that unit. I've not heard of Craftx before, but looks like the manufacturer could make a few tweaks to really bring their offerings up a notch. Looks like their better sanders already have those enhancements. Not sure how this model got past their internal product testing.

Side Note: Store bought pine lumber is wet as it has a higher concentration of moisture than kiln dried hardwood. This is what is filling up the drum sander. Since you have a planer you may want to see if you can get rough sawn pine and plane/mill it down to what you need. I would suspect you may save quite a bit than what your currently paying if you have a saw mill in the area. Thanks for the video.
Not sure why you didn't buy the Jet 16 32, it already has those features built in out of the box. I'm really happy with mine. Nonetheless, great video!

Did you ever replace the conveyor belt? Or did removing those two rollers solve the feed problem?

JB weld will not stick to porpoises, turtles yes, porpoises no😉
I have a Jet 18/36 with a 4” dust port. My feed belt is a sand paper belt. My rollers press down hard. I have never had any feed problems. My suggestion is to change the feed belt and put your rollers back in. They used a cheap belt on your machine to keep costs down. Also they sized the dust port according to what they thought their customers would most likely be using for dust control (a shop vac). No second guessing just do it. You won’t be sorry.

What conveyor belt are you using
A bead of clear silicon would have done fine. Nice upgrade regardless of the epoxy looks.
I have one exactly the same as yours but different branding. How did you adjust yours to be level across the entire width? I tried once and managed to get it to approx a couple of mm difference from one side to the next but it's damned fiddly to do. ☹️
I just picked up and out Ryobi version of the same sander for $100 on marketplace. All it needed was and need speed controller and an infeed roller, both available on ebay luckily.
I just picked up the same one for $180 with 4 big rolls of sandpaper... 😁

@Matt P thanks! I managed to get it last night but I don't know what I did. I just kept trying. It's a great machine but horrible engineering. I think once the paper I have is used up I may convert it to velcro. Lmk about that clip...I sanded off my fingerprints messing around with it lol
Any suggestions on replacing the sandpaper? Those two clips suck. It never seems to line up...not many videos on the subject. I can't be this dense haha
If it works it works. 90 percent of the people watchin want to but never actually used power tools. Youll figure it out i have faith in u. Also, the people who make tools dont use them either
Now that you have completed these mods to make the sander work better, do you think it's worth the cost (~$1100)? I'm in Ontario and am trying to nail down my drum sander choices and it's between this one (and the King equivalent) and the supermax 16-32 which is almost twice the money after tax but gets stellar reviews from everyone ... Thanks!
For me it sure has but that is simply because of the hours I use it and the hours (littlerall several hundred by now) that I haven't had to use it to finish with an orbital sander. I do use this in maybe a bit of a non-standard way in that I have a single product I use this to sand and have almost turned this into a strictly production machine. Having said that, it's performing really well with no issues or problems at all. Cheers 👍
I have the Jet 16-32 and my major issue is those pesky clips that hold the paper. Very difficult to get the paper rolled on and not overlap or be loose in places...and the clip on the end (even with their little tool) is a real pain. I'd be interested in hearing about your experience in this regard. Any suggestions on how to change the paper without all this frustration? Thanks!
I had a jet 16-32 for years and never had a problem with the clips or overlapping sandpaper. The end clip is easy, but you have to know how it works. There are some videos on RUclips where you can see how to do it.
How about a knife regrind, get a production knife and re grind it to have better geometry or a thinner edge
Did you think about that they might have put that slippery belt installed to make sure you dont feed to much into the sander? Does it really grind flat, with the support on one side only?
Honestly, they way this was set up, you couldn't even take the slightest cut and have the belt pull it through. It was not a matter of too heavy of a cut, but essentially no cut at all. Before I took those rollers out as soon as the drum would start to touch the wood, it would shoot it out. This was 100% a poor product from the manufacturer. Oh well, I'll fix it for them 😆👍

@@Simplelittlelife I have a King drum sander and I thought the belt was not grippy enough. Having bought the sander 2nd hand I thought maybe it has dried out, but I guess they are made that way. I will remove those guides just like you did. Great fix!
Please explain HOW it works better without the two rollers.
You should have bought a Supermax Drum Sander.
I have no complaints about this one whatsoever and I use it probably around 12 hours a week. I would buy this one again.

I think I would have just sent it back and got another but you have great patience----the clips on the side of the drum to hold the snapper in are notoriously bad on the POWERMATIC
I have it dialed in fairly well now and it’s working pretty good. I will end up using it 8 hrs a day for 2 months at Christmas time and I’m really impressed with how it’s held up. I thought I would have worn it out by now.
upgrade the dust collector from bag to filter type. It'll suck so much better. you'll also have less dust particles floating in the shop. And the bag won't clog up. 2 stage is even better.
Right on. I appreciate the insight. I am planning on getting a better dust collector in the next few months. Think I need to spend a little more cash and get something decent.

4" house is the way to go. First of all, I do not think it is benifitial to leave the flange under the hood. The steps around the 2 flange corners are slowing down air flow over them, so air can carry less dust. Second, I will not stick the 4" fitting under the hood at all. Use a contour gauge to copy the curve on top of the hood, and cut the bottom of an elbow fitting to match. Then attaching it to the top of the hood, then cut the hood to be flush to the interior of elbow fitting. Last, but I am not 100% sure about this. most likely the hood is ABS. Dust dollection fittings from most store are ABS. You can use a solvent to attach them together. The cutoff pieces from the hood, break them down to smaller pieces, leave in a glass jar or small bottle with lid that can be closed tight, pour sole solvent into it and shake it to get a paste. This will be the best thing to attach 2 pieces of ABS together even when there is a gap.
Thicken epoxy or 3m 5200.

Those pressure rollers are beneficial at minimizing snipe at the ends of a wood piece. Snipe is often a problem with long boards, especially without infeed and outfeed tables.
Nope. I get way less snipe without them. I have literally several hundred hours (if not more than a thousand) on this machine and removing the rollers yields way better performance than having them in.

We are in our busy season again and I’ve been putting 30-40 hours a week on this bad boy again for several weeks. I have over 500 hours on it, not exaggerated, and it’s still doing really well. The drum is starting to show surface where which is to be expected, but dang, this thing has paid for itself dozens of times over.
🤣 Yes Jeremy that was an incredibly ugly job but at least now you know to put the epoxy on the inside. 😁
