Out of left field, here's a video on upgrading your Performax 16-32 drum sander to the SandSmart version with replacement parts from Jet. We'll take a tour of the sander including the internals of the controller box. I'll explain some aspects of the controller, what SandSmart is (and why you want it :)), then do the upgrade.
Even if you are not interested in upgrading the controller, if you have an older pre-Jet model of drum sander, you might want to consider upgrading the cover as the newer Jet models have a 4" dust port vs the 2.5" port of the originals. That upgrade would run you perhaps $20 but would save you that in burnt stock.

Great video and explanation. I have a 16-32 that sat for a couple years and conveyer belt is not working. Your video helps me understand the motor & housing. Hopefully the problem is the switch or something other than replacing the motor. Thanks again

Just picked up an old 16-32. Upgrade is too much though. Board alone would double what I paid. Glad to know I have to be careful not to run the conveyer belt too fast. Thanks!

I know this video has some age on it now, but I could really use your help. I bought a Powermax 16-32 drum sander a day ago. I tested it before purchase, everything was good. Got it home, changed out the sanding paper, ran one board through to ensure it was good. Later on I came back, turned it on-the drum spin for half a second and then nothing. The conveyor belt works fine. I’m at a loss, and the sander is so old I can’t find a manual. Please help.

So I have a question with this video. I have a Supermax 19-38 and this video you may be able to help me with.
On the Supermax intellisand which all is very similar build because they look identical, where the plug from the drum motor plugs into the receptacle on the side of the panel box. The drive roller snapped and had to be replaced to control the conveyer belt. When I unplugged the plug it started smoking and since then it has not worked. The wall receptacle works just fine but I cannot get the receptacle on the panel box to relay power to the drum motor. Do you know what may have cause this or what I might need to replace? I’ve had a hard time trying to get in touch with Laguna and getting frustrated with plugging both motors up separately.

When I turn on my conveyor belt and than the drum motor the conveyor doesn't work on med. speed only it works on high speed and the small red light stays on. If I turn off the drum motor the conveyor works perfect. I don't understand what happen from one day to the next. Need Help. I called the jet company and the tech. man was to tired to help me, he sounded like he was stone on something.

The coupling and spider that drive the drum on my Performax 16-32 drum sander have broken. Can you suggest where I can find replacement parts? Thank you. I enjoyed this video.

do you have trouble with conveyor belt tracking? Mine keeps moving across to motor side, have a new belt on it still tracking problems

Do you know of a replacement board and feed table? Any help appreciated. I'm also considering using 2 separate cords and on off switches to separate circuits.

Just to confirm I have an original performax pre- jet. Can I add sandsmart to it? Thanks for the video, subscribed!

It would work on a pre-Jet if the motor on the drum is 1.5hp @ 14 amps. Normally these controllers like SandSmart monitor the current going to the drum motor. Once it approaches the motor's full-load of 14A, it backs off the feed motor so the drum catches up.
This is my assumption of how SandSmart does the monitoring since current monitoring is pretty common.
If the assumption is correct, if your Performax has a motor that peaks at 12A, you'll likely not get as much of a benefit (or any at all) since 12A is the motor's peak and SandSmart may throttle back starting at 12A.
So, if you are really interested in SandSmart (and I love it), call Jet's parts desk and ask for technical support. As them if it would work with a motor of your size. The guy I talked to would absolutely be capable of answering that question... he knew that board inside out. I don't recall his name, though.

I suggest taking a picture of the existing wire. That picture IS worth a thousand words when it comes to reattaching wires. And, as experience has shown, half of those thousand words will be profanity because you didn't take a picture!

I have a 1997 model Performax 22-44 drum sander. What company is supplying parts? Posted June 9 2014. Many thanks.

Hi William... after googling a bit, I can't find when Jet acquired Performax. However, I had an original Performax (was in the video as the second unit) and all the parts were more or less the same. I did have to drill different holes in a replacement power box, but that's about it. If you are getting the controller board, you'll need to buy the box the controller goes in (the one with the conveyor speed knob and power switch) as the controller is a completely different size. That said, you are replacing that entire box to do the upgrade and drive the conveyor motor. That kinda takes the compatibility of parts out of the equation since you just need to possibly tap new holes in the box.
So you should be able to use the Jet replacement parts desk like I used. That said, you'll want to do your own research; there could be changes I don't know about that you'll need to work around. If you're not scared of working around the problems, though, it should go pretty smoothly.

I only found this comment today. Sorry! IndustrialAbrasives.com has a lot of good drum sander stock including belts. Now, there are poly belts that sound like they are better than the traditional belt, but everyone I know who bought a poly belt regretted it. I know you didn't ask that, but thought to say it :) haha!

Greetings brother I have a question for you as I can make the machine have that problem even eat eats more than one side

    • @HalfinchshyWWing
      @HalfinchshyWWing  10 лет назад +2

Sounds like the arm isn't perfectly parallel over the conveyor belt. That's a problem with the open-sided drum sanders (which at least have the advantage of double capacity... tough decision :)
The way I've set mine in the past is this: take a couple pieces of 3/4" MDF or Melamine (MCP) and stack them on the conveyor below the drum head. Loosen the bolts a bit on the drum head and lower the head down to rest on the MDF. Since MDF/MCP is very consistently parallel, pressing the drum head down on it while tightening up the adjustment bolts will get it pretty close to dead parallel on the conveyor. Give that a shot!

Have you tried adjusting the tracking screws? There's one on each side. When the track drifts to a side, it's the tracking that's typically wrong -or- the conveyor belt wasn't made correctly (i.e., the path around the right side is shorter than the path around the left)

I'm having trouble with my Ryobi WDS1600 controller. This is basically the same machine as your performax. I replaced the pc board but can't find a wiring diagram to hook it up properly. I've even sent it off to an expert who can't figure it out. Any suggestions? If you have a wiring diagram would be easy, if not might you have a picture of the perfomax hooked up

Controller problem on mine was a B250K pot that was bad, I replaced it with a 200k pot that was in my spare parts collection and no more problems.

Mine bolted right in. I compared it to my 22-44 board. It is the same board. I use mine on a 22-44 Pro that was pre-smartsand. I had no problems with the install. I did order the metal case to hold the larger controller. Went in just like the video.
