Hi GPTV Great idea.
I think you had a lucky escape not finding a suitable nut as it would most likely lock solid on the shaft when it came in contact with the thread end. Be interesting to know if the runout caused problems when buffing? In which case l'm guessing a outrigger bearing to stabilize the head would not be too difficult to rig up.
