    Kricketts, are you still out there? I have the same drum sander. Won't tell you the stupid thing I did to get my lift mechanism bound up. Still working on it. Did you fine a source for the motor pulley? Thanks Tom

    I'd found that the nut on the stem bolts were too tight and so the cranking was to tight. I had to hold the crank and loosen the nut until the washers and bearing could spin freely...and left it. That did it. The previous owner cranked it while too tight and striped the plastic gears which are $50 if you can fine them. Many parts on these things are discontinued. The pivot bushings bearings are $150 each

    Don't even waste time priming and too much prep, you'll be amazed just wire brush the rust a bit and paint with rustoleum and it will give you 5 years. If you want 10 to 15 prepare to give your life away, me I'd rather just recoat every 5 years much easier and still stops from further rusting.

  • @bullfrogpondshop3179
    @bullfrogpondshop3179 Год назад

    Here's my experience with this machine: Table height wheel was very difficult to turn. Belt was skipping teeth now and then, which throws the table out of alignment a tiny bit with each skipped tooth. I replaced the belt, hoping a fresh belt would work better. While I had the belt off, I performed the service shown in this video. No improvement. One viewer recommended greasing the needle bearings, so I did that. I also loosened the large nuts on the four table posts to finger tight. Voila! Table height wheel turns easier than ever! No skipped teeth either! Will report back after some use.

    • @rifosi
      @rifosi Год назад

      Hey, I have the same issue with mine (timing belt skipping teeth and so misaligned height posts). I’m not sure I got what you say. Where are located the nuts you hand tightened?

    • @rifosi
      @rifosi Год назад

      @@bullfrogpondshop3179 , thanks for your attention. Yes, makes sense that this nut should be just touching the washer-bearing-washer pile, and not crunching them. In my machine, I needed to screw this nut a little bit more using a wrench, to get no gaps between the nut and the w-b-w pile, taking care to still allow them to move freely side to side but not up and down. I did this yesterday. But it is still skipping teeth, unfortunately. Since I took all three posts (all except the one with a jam nut) apart and cleaned and lubricated all parts, including the now infamous thrust bearings, my last guess for the culprit is the timing belt. I took it off and although it looks okay, maybe 15 years of service being used eventually with more tension that it would be recommended, resulted in some stretch. The problem now will be to find a replacement, since I live in Brazil. I tried to Google the codes printed in it, but got no valuable information. Do you know some Goodyear online retailer that I could try? Thanks again! UPDATE: I just found it in Amazon. I’ll place an order and let you know if it worked.

      @@rifosi great news, good luck and yes keep me posted!

    • @rifosi
      @rifosi Год назад

      I eventually found out that in my case the problem is with one of the timing gears. It’s broken and the screw get stuck at some point. So I need a replacement. If someone has a non-working sander like this, I would buy this part if not damaged.

  • @bullfrogpondshop3179
    @bullfrogpondshop3179 Год назад

    It seems to me that the likelihood of moving one of the posts while installing the belt is almost certain. Wouldn't it be better to get them close, then install the belt, then adjust the posts using the hex top?

    So, if you were to glass it again, would you go over the keel but leave an extra bit of material on the other side, then when you laid the fiberglass matting on the opposite side, do the same: run the cloth up and over the keel, but leave an extra bit of cloth on the bottom of the initially glassed side?

    You don't feel a roller would have worked on a boat this size? At least on the sides?🤷‍♂️ Although it's extra money and time, given the condition, I feel that totally makes sense using a primer on an older boat exposed as it was when you started this.👌

      Funny you should mention that. I recently acquired a pair of early 20th century cast iron park bench ends. They weigh about 50 pounds each. Lots of detail including cherubs flowers and stems. After power brushing, I applied rustolium rust dissolver (gel) . I prefer gel because with rubber disposable gloves, you can get into nooks and crannys and smooth it out. After it dries, about 16 hours, I then brushed on rustolium rusty metal primer. (Red/brown. Every thing is sealed and ready for topcoat of various colors. I really think it will last for years out in harsh weather.

    Superior epoxy has all the benefits of the polyester resin you mentioned. You do not need to sand between coats as long as the next coat is applied while the first still has the slightest tackiness to it. Epoxy has much better adhesion than polyester, and does not suffer from osmosis. It only needs 3 coats- the first coat to seal the wood, the second coat to saturate the cloth, and the 3rd coat to fill the weave. No bubbles will occur on the first coat if the wood is cooling when you apply it. Or wait til its mostly cured to see if any bubbles occur before applying the glass.
