- Larry Holmes defeated Gerry Cooney 40 years ago and the pair have been friends ever since. The two former heavyweights reflect on their bout, the racial overtones during the build up, having snipers on the rooftops after death threats and how Holmes helped Cooney out of his depression.

Love their enduring post-fight friendship despite all the racial crap that was being spun. Friendship has no colour barrier
❤️
That's right!
Great comment
I love that these lads are friends, the promoters amped up the racial element of the original fight. What you had was two honest fighters in the ring, and obviously Larry was the better man. One love lads
It was the media-& they still do it today
Just wonderful
Great to see those two winners as friends 40 years later. Gentlemen competitors respecting each other; not like some of todays rogues.
You can say that again.
Nice to see former boxing rivals become friends
Oh fun insight, Larry always was really nice and respectable to Gerry. It was nice seeing Larry to give Gerry peace of mind during it. He told Gerry don't mind that crap and knock my head off and let's have a good fight.
Both are Proper Lads.
Larry Holmes is a great man & so is Gerry Cooney.long live them both
🤝🏿🙏🏿🙂💯🥊
Larry Holmes is an all-time great!
Absolutely right
Holmes in his prime was heavyweight champ for 8 years and had 20 title defenses back in a very tough era. Respect!
He was so overlooked I thought. Such a great champ.
As I remember in June '82, after finishing my sophomore year in High School, the build-up to the fight was intense because of the racial element but the fighters just wanted to compete and find out who the better man was. Man, those were the days when it came to Championship Fights because it was 15 Rounds, not 12 like today. In spite of the racial instigators both Larry & Gerry rose above that then and now.
I remember when I was watching the fight when it was on TV, as they touched gloves, Larry said to Gerry, "let's have a good fight."
Two warriors. Holmes is really underrated. He was a great champion. They both look great. Glad to see they're still healthy.
Larry Holmes. A great champ. Maybe the greatest. A class act, a great father and I'm a big big fan!
Holmes is a racist, bigoted person.
The greatest ?
Larry has a real genuine heart of gold; what a down to earth guy; his perspective on everything is amazing !!
Good too see Jerry with no ghosts, shook off all his demons, is a happy guy. Larry was always pretty even keeled, intelligent, realistic, blue-collar.
Larry and Gerry were and still proper lads.
Those were the days my friend I wished they would have never ended.
It's really great to see these two Warriors speaking so articulately. I love to see these guys doing okay in their old age because they are too genuinely good people.
Two gentlemen whom knocked the shit out of each other. True champions of the sport.
Still remember watching this fight at a bar called “Friends”….Now I’m watching two “friends” reminisce about that night. Thanks for the great memory, guys.
Love these guys !
I lived in Las Vegas at the time and got to watch both Larry and Gerry train multiple days …
I was rooting for Gerry but to lose to such a fantastic champion as Larry Holmes was just the way it was supposed to be
One training session I watched Gerry broke the speed bag !!! He hit it with such force it came off it’s mount abd the entire thing broke
Wonderful to see both of you friends now !!
Great interview!!!
Love all the old fighters!
2 of the best fighters who always put on a great show no matter who they fought. Love them both.
Love both of thse guys - both of them formidable in their day! Larry Holmes was a phenomenal champion, 19 (nineteen) straight defences!!!!
Both very humble..They don't make men like these anymore...the last great generation..
Larry is underatted, very good champ….Gerry, great left. Thx
Two great legends..
Nice they're such close friends.
They really do love each other, that's great 👍
Nice to see 2 greats being grateful for one another in their lives.
I can c the jerry is a pure fun guy natural guy he faugth some great guys much love guys from Jamaica larry great guy
so that's how jerry looks today? i would not have recognized him. he looks great!
Great Stuff! Larry you are & always will be One of the Greatest Champs, Your 7 - 8 yrs run was incredible!
There in NOTHING on earth that restores my hope more than seeing this type of thing. The mutual respect is endearing.
If Cooney had at least two more fights with boxers similar to Holmes before the big Holmes-Cooney fight, he'd have been a better challenger. Cooney also needed a better trainer than Victor Vallee. George Foreman said that Cooney was the hardest puncher he ever fought, so Cooney had enough in his hands to beat Holmes. He could have beaten Holmes that night, but let his chance get away. Holmes DID NOT want a rematch with Cooney after tasting his left hook. Holmes has always been silent about desiring that second title fight with him.
@veganhigler6541 he was an alcoholic then
You got destroyed by your moms strap on
The only reason Cooney got a chance to fight Holmes was that he is white.
These guys are just great men inside and outside the ring. Larry was one of the very best ever to step into the ring.
I believe if Cooney had not been rushed,he could have gained more experience. Even though he hung in there, Cooney did not have enough experience to go up against one of the greatest!
Cooney didn't have the best chin. The Rappaport brothers knew what they had.
Love you Both 🎉2Of the Best Ever
This is good to see!!
Gotta love their friendship!!😎😎👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
cooney not only lost the fight but his will. spinks showed that he didn't belong in the top 10
@@debrapugh1746 Cooney was shot for Spinks. The Holmes fight destroyed him mentally.
@@Camcolito you are correct
so good to see this
Both men left it all in the ring, had successful careers & made it out with their minds intact I'm also happy to see this
With most of them, it's like they're all in the same fraternity, they hold no grudges or bitter feelings. Maybe a few fighters (Berbick etc) left others feeling not too enamored of them.
With you! The 80s was truly a golden era in boxing history. ❤
I remember that fight, dam it was a good Fight.Holmes was ferocious.Good to see both Jerry, and Larry together.
Great to see both forty years now.😃👍🇷🇺🇺🇸🍻👍🍻😁
So nice. Awesome!
Both of these guys are a total clas act. God bless Holmes and Cooney.
Love it
Unas de las mejores peleaa de peso pesado q vi….👏👏👏👏
Larry Holmes had me fooled. I didn't like him. I thought he had a surly personality. Turns out he is a nice guy. The surliness was just an act to sell tickets. Maybe Holmes should have gone to Hollywood. He was certainly a good actor! And know I know how likeable he really is.
A happy St. Patrick Day today. St. Patrick was a real person he helped convert Ireland to Christianity and he even performed some miracles !.
Where yat Holmes?
Still beloved by your fans everywhere!
It was a great HW fight that I remember watching at the time when I was 15
Cooney landed some nice low blows in this fight. Holmes said, ‘I’m not having sex tonight after this fight!’
40 years later and now Larry and Gerry are together trying to figure out how to get on that snappy chat or space book
the interviewer bringing up the racial overtones was a very nasty thing to say ,why turn the interview nasty by bringinging nasty elements to the interview ,as a brit i found his questions to be very nasty
At the time, I thought that Cooney was rushed into the fight and would've benefited from mixing it up with a few more top contenders before taking on the champion. Of course, he may have lost in the process and missed out on a title shot completely. It's always a bit of a gamble.
Too bad they didn't fight again in the early 90s when there was the senior tour in the heavyweight division it would've been a hot ticket
One of these guys had the greatest left hook to the balls in boxing history.....
Yes sir 😊🎉❤
Glad Gerry is doing well these days
Gerry Cooney gained a ton of experience fighting Larry Holmes. I always wondered why he didn't pursue his career as a heavyweight. Perhaps the experience of losing messed with his mentality. He was young.
Now, their getting old together they have memorable fight.
That goes for all fighters. Nothing personal boxing is a business not a sport how are you going to hate somebody that made you millions of dollars
🥊💯🏆🙂
Hey I wish them well. GOD bless and keep them in the name of JESUS CHRIST.
I watched this fight at gators dockside. I was a kid and this was a great match up but Holmes was the beast
My God today both of these guys would DESTROY these heavyweights today 2024. Gerry's left hook was DEATH..Larry's boxing was or rivaled Ali or Fury....LEGENDS. Today Heavyweights can't go 10 rounds, these guys went 13
two fights l aiways wanted to see holmes vs coetzee and cooney vs coetzee ,who wins
Holmes always wins against Coetzee. Cooney and Coetzee maybe a draw
the way they sound now shows this ageing come to everyone especially larry he dont sound atall like he used to
Gerry’s a great guy and good fighter. But Larry was one of the greatest.
Why always bring up the negative racial overtones .what a negative interviewer .you spoilt and polluted the interview with the negativity
Cooney looks great
Larry Holmes is one of if not the most underrated Heavyweight Champion of all time. In His prime i believe He would have beaten Tyson. Holmes was bigger, had the best jab and a deadly right cross and He would not have been afraid of Tyson. One of Tyson's best weapons was fighters feared Him and were intimidated by Him. But with Larry Holmes in His prime that would not have worked for Tyson. Just My opinion. But I also had the opinion that Buster Douglas was going to beat Tyson even though everyone i told that to said I didn't know what I was talking about.
Cooney had too much working against him when he fought Holmes.....Victor Valle, horrible best describes him.....lack of experience, he needed 4 or 5 more before facing Larry....his head was not screwed on right...he was overly concerned with going the distance.....should have just fought his fight.....he faced an all time great heavyweight and the peak of his career....he should've went golfing instead 😅
JUST THROW 1 HARD PUNCH AND THIS GLASS JAW COONEY IS GOING DOWN. ROBERTO DURAN COULD HAVE BEAT HIM WITHIN 1 ROUND.
I saw a video of Cooney making many big sex to your mom. You never see these videos because it was before you were borned. About 9 month before you get borned
gerry had huge ring rust ,fought just one minute in a year and a half ,respect to larry but gerry was rusty and victor valle was not top notch trainer sorry to say. two fights i would ve loved to see ,holmes vs coetzee and cooney vs coetzee. ok who wins ?
Jake Paul has an offer to fight Holmes next
Good to see these guys are close friends now. Sometimes two guys just need to belt each other around once to create a bond as close as brothers.
Gentlemen cooney
wow he can't remember the year he won the title?
Maybe that's because he never really won the 'title'.
Any guy that eats his own booge is OK with my book
Jerry Cooney is correct. Only Ali was better than Holmes.
Cooney had an inflated record as has been typically done forever to get guys a shot at the title. Fighting tomato cans, as they call them.
Jerry Cooney you were a lazy trainer and you used to go out and party and drink you didn't take boxing serious and you know it you should have won that fight
Cooney was a good fighter but Larry is on the top 5 of all times
@@JG-nf4qu That guy is a dumsky. One can never correct that kind of turd.
Cooney needed different trainer and handlers, lots of wasted talent.
Unwatchable
We’re always keen to hear feedback, especially constructive criticism, so we can improve. We’d love to hear why you feel this video is unwatchable?
The fight was fixed lol
U sound just like them racist mfs back in the day dearing that fight.
How so don't be bloody ridiculous
@@chrisbennett6260 what do you mean? It was literally proven in court, he was a mafia boxer, they fixed the fight
@@canescatsheat3056 , Delusional
I don't agree with that but the 2020 election was fixed
The only name fighters Cooney faced in his career (and he beat them) were Lyle, Young and Norton who were all born in the 1940s where Cooney was born in the mid-1950s. Holmes was born the 1940s, too but, Cooney lost anyway. Cooney never earned a title shot and got it simply because he was the "best" of the white heavyweights and boxing wanted a white heavyweight champ, again. This has been talked about many times in the media over the years. Even Holmes has said Cooney was the "white hope" du jour.
Like a couple of teens sat there hahaha
