LARRY HOLMES & GERRY COONEY REFLECT ON THEIR WAR 40 YEARS LATER! RACISM, SNIPERS, DEPRESSION & MORE!

  • Larry Holmes defeated Gerry Cooney 40 years ago and the pair have been friends ever since. The two former heavyweights reflect on their bout, the racial overtones during the build up, having snipers on the rooftops after death threats and how Holmes helped Cooney out of his depression.

As I remember in June '82, after finishing my sophomore year in High School, the build-up to the fight was intense because of the racial element but the fighters just wanted to compete and find out who the better man was. Man, those were the days when it came to Championship Fights because it was 15 Rounds, not 12 like today. In spite of the racial instigators both Larry & Gerry rose above that then and now.

If Cooney had at least two more fights with boxers similar to Holmes before the big Holmes-Cooney fight, he'd have been a better challenger. Cooney also needed a better trainer than Victor Vallee. George Foreman said that Cooney was the hardest puncher he ever fought, so Cooney had enough in his hands to beat Holmes. He could have beaten Holmes that night, but let his chance get away. Holmes DID NOT want a rematch with Cooney after tasting his left hook. Holmes has always been silent about desiring that second title fight with him.

Larry Holmes is one of if not the most underrated Heavyweight Champion of all time. In His prime i believe He would have beaten Tyson. Holmes was bigger, had the best jab and a deadly right cross and He would not have been afraid of Tyson. One of Tyson's best weapons was fighters feared Him and were intimidated by Him. But with Larry Holmes in His prime that would not have worked for Tyson. Just My opinion. But I also had the opinion that Buster Douglas was going to beat Tyson even though everyone i told that to said I didn't know what I was talking about.

The only name fighters Cooney faced in his career (and he beat them) were Lyle, Young and Norton who were all born in the 1940s where Cooney was born in the mid-1950s. Holmes was born the 1940s, too but, Cooney lost anyway. Cooney never earned a title shot and got it simply because he was the "best" of the white heavyweights and boxing wanted a white heavyweight champ, again. This has been talked about many times in the media over the years. Even Holmes has said Cooney was the "white hope" du jour.
