You can tell what a great father Joe Frazier was by listening to his kids talk about him. Joe's daughter, Jacqui, talks about her dad just like Marvis does. That is a true testament to a man's life in many ways. Listen to a father's kids (after they grow up and become adults) talking about their father. They really love and respect their dad.

Larry Holmes was far from boring. In fact, he had some of the most exciting fights in heavyweight history...
    Holmes vs. Shavers 2
    Holmes vs. Norton
    Holmes vs. Cooney
    Holmes vs. Witherspoon, etc.
Those were classic battles and Larry Holmes had a lot more to bring to the table than just a great left jab. He had a terrific right hand and uppercut to go with it. He was an excellent combination puncher who could fight you toe to toe or at range using his great footwork. He was a true champion.

I remember back when the great heavyweights, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, Norton went around doing interviews and made appearances on talk shows promoting their champions forever video tape. All 5 of the great heavyweights were sitting together. The interviewer started to ask Larry Holmes, "Larry, you fought Ali and Norton and are still looking at the possibility of a fight against George Foreman making some good money together, but you never fought Joe Frazier and..."
Larry cut off the interviewer with one quick short statement, "Thank God." lol
Larry is a true gentleman, a good man who had, and still has, a hell of a lot of respect for Smokin Joe Frazier. Rest in peace Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton. life passes by so quickly, can't believe those three are gone. I remember watching all of them box on TV in the 1970s. I’ll never forget the fight between Larry Holmes and Marvis Frazier.
A complete mismatch if ever there was one. Midway thru ( I believe) the 1st round, Holmes connected and sent Marvis reeling.
Marvis was stunned, and Holmes was pleading with the Ref (several times) to stop the fight (even after landing a few ‘light punches). Shortly afterwards, the fight was over.
Much respect to Mr. Holmes. He could have really ‘teed-off’ on Marvis, but showed plenty of class and restraint to prevent that match from turning into a 3-ring circus.

Holmes had no business going up against a prime Tyson just as much as Ali had no business going up against a prime Holmes. Ali may have started showing early signs of Parkinsons syndrome but Larry Holmes stepped into the ring at almost 39 years old, coming from a 2 year layoff and with no tune-ups going against one of the most feared fighters in boxing history as well as one of the best finishers at the age of 22! Don't tell me that Holmes was an able bodied man.

+nobby roberts Holmes was a steady target and the accuracy of the first Ali would be a nightmare for him. Not to speak of Ali of the early 70s: too fast, iron chin, strong, stronger than people think (if prime Foreman couldn't KD/KO him than envious Holmes would have dreamed of). No, Holmes was not and could have never been better that Ali up to more or less Foreman fight or Thrilla in Manila. Only a syndrome could have helped that envious turd.

Ali wasn’t just past his prime when he fought Holmes, he was clearly exhibiting signs of Parkinson’s already. It’s disgraceful that that fight was allowed to go on.
Holmes was a great champion but his resume just doesn’t touch Ali’s. Ali fought and beat the best heavyweights during the time when the heavyweight division was brimming with top talent.
Holmes is certainly one of the best fighters but he also fought in an era that didn’t have the depth of competition of Ali or Frazier’s.
Who you fought and beat us just as important as how many wins or losses you have.
Prior to his Tyson Fury fights, Deontay Wilder was undefeated but 95% of his fights were against fighters who no real shot of winning or were decent fighters who were old and passed their prime.

If Holmes destruction of Ali is meaningless because of Ali's age (8 years older than Holmes) , one has to use the same logic to diminish Ali's victories over an ancient Sonny Liston who was "officially" ten years older than Ali, and in reality much more than that. Ali worshippers, however, rarely like that logic.

+sportshistorybuff Liston was coming off of two first round knockouts of Floyd Patterson. I doubt anyone who saw Ali's fight against Cooper seriously thought Liston had anything to worry about.

And Liston's body was falling apart with bursitis, in constant pain and needing injections daily. His wifesaid it was so bad training in Miami, he often had to walk the streets for relief.

When Ali beat Liston it was a major upset. Only the most optimistic thought he had a chance against Holmes.

HOlmes style would lose to two guys, frazier and tyson at their best.In his prime or not.wouldnt matter. Holmes could beat ali and foreman.Styles make fights and holmes style was made to oreder for the frazier/tyson style.
