This is one of the most hilarious and humble interviews I've ever seen. Randall "Tex" Cobb is a legend for taking so much punishment from Larry Holmes and still cracking jokes. He has a great sense of humor and a positive attitude. I love how he respects Holmes and admits he was outclassed. What a class act!
He was a beast,,,laughed his way through the last 5 rounds as Howard Cosel begged for the fight to be stopped,,Tex kept his hands down and laughed and stuck his tongue out at Larry,,,and Larry begged the ref to stop it,but the ref said knock him out or fight,,,,Tex waited for the bell after the 15th round,,,Howard Cosell told Tex after his performance in the ring he would never announce a fight again,,,and Tex told him ,well that's just another great thing I have done for boxing,,,Wide World Of Sports,,1978???? Or so???? Google it,,,great fight and great interview after

You can watch the fight on RUclips. I watched the fight live Randall Cobb was from a town just down the road from us at the time. Mr. Cobb was not effective at moving his head not upper body and took viscous blows that would have knocked out any other boxers in the heavyweight class. Holmes literally beat on him for 15 rounds while Howard Cosell commented and made pleas to stop the fight. I don’t remember Tex Cobb being wobbled once. He would steadily take combinations to the head and keep stepping forward and hit Larry Holmes once. There were calls to stop boxing in those days. A short time before this fight a Korean boxer last name of Kem or Kim was killed in a boxing match so public scrutiny was very high on the sport. It was not a good exhibition for the public to witness at the time. Tex Cobb was one tough customer. Larry Holmes just knew that this fight was bad politics for the sport in general. Cobb did land a few good shots that lacked just a fraction of angle from being devastating. He just took viscous shots to set himself up to that point and he did it numerous times.
@@hughobrien4139 Yeah, Tex had a habit of blocking punches with his face. Holmes had way better technique and just stayed out of Cobb's range while he beat the living hell out of him. Tex was just not a skilled enough boxer to hang with Larry. Now if that had been a kickboxing contest, Tex would probably have smashed Holmes in five rounds or so. Tex a was a fighter, and a great one, but boxing requires skills he didn't really have.
Nobody could take a punch like Randall. All the shots he took over the years in boxing, and he's still sharp and has a great sense of humor. He's 72 now.

He was natural at doing that. I wonder if there is a documentary of his life out there, as I think I would enjoy reading that. perhaps, maybe a documentary in the film format? Either way, I wonder if he still has an agent that would allow an old tier to have a chat with him. It is very likely that I wouldn't be remembered, as I really didn't have anything memorable to offer a man of such a high caliber of kindness, but, I would enjoy telling him, how much I always respected his kind nature to everybody. I can tell you, to see some of the TV and movie roles he would play, often times he would play the "bad guy or villain" and beings I knew how he was in real life, "A super nice guy" it was hard to watch those gigs...lol... He wouldn't punch a guy for no reason and then throw hi through the front window...lol.. Yes, I know, it is just acting.. but, just odd to see that portrayal from a nice guy. You know what, someone like him, it wouldn't shock me, if he might not remember your name, but, with a little bit of back story, from 40 plus years ago, that he would then say "OH YA, I remember you know" and then start rapping off the subject matters in which we had talked about and the days before, during and after.. He just seems like that is likely with his nature... ?
I fell in love with him when he played "Sailor" in Uncommon Valor, alongside Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Fred Ward. Didn't know he was a boxer at first, nor that he was so articulate and hilarious; but I've since learned. ;-)
Looking back at it all, I kinda shocked Tex wasn’t snatched up in a disney movie about Paul Bunyan earlier in his career or some western. He’s always had great stage presence and such a amazing sense of hilarity.
How can you not love a guy who can get in the ring with Larry Holmes, survive 15 rounds (which isn't done anymore), get beat and have that sense of humor?
After howard cossel said he would quit calling boxing after watching this beating tex responded " ill go another 15 if he gives up monday night football"

First time listening to a Tex Cobb interview. What a nice humble man he is
Johnny Carson! There will never be another like him! I’m glad I lived in a time to watch him
Tex is wonderful, his sense of humor is a bright spot.....
I fell in love with him when he played "Sailor" in Uncommon Valor, alongside Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Fred Ward. Didn't know he was a boxer at first, nor that he was so articulate and hilarious; but I've since learned. ;-)
I met Randall on Kauai when he was there making Uncommon Valor. I had a car. He didn't. We hung out for a week. What a blast.
Never knew he was a fighter, only knew him as an actor !
Funny guy, really laid back, hilariously subtle...
I remember watching this interview when it first aired. I laughed my ass off that night.
"You have a lot of expenses, don't you?"
"Well, one of the most expensive things you can do is know Don King."
this was a great interview and a random find on the youtube journey. pretty great all round
You gotta love Tex Cobbs wit, he's one of a kind
Looking back at it all, I kinda shocked Tex wasn’t snatched up in a disney movie about Paul Bunyan earlier in his career or some western. He’s always had great stage presence and such a amazing sense of hilarity.
How can you not love a guy who can get in the ring with Larry Holmes, survive 15 rounds (which isn't done anymore), get beat and have that sense of humor?
Class act Johnny Carson. Interview was nice and smooth and every enticing!
Today, it looks a little strange to see someone sitting quiet long enough to t let a guy like tex have his say.
Johnny was an ace.
After howard cossel said he would quit calling boxing after watching this beating tex responded " ill go another 15 if he gives up monday night football"
What an entertaining and awesome interview. Randall has a fantastic and witty personality!
Tex Cobb was one of a kind. There will never be another like him in boxing.
Tex in Naked Gun 33 1/3 was hilarious. Shower scene makes me laugh out loud every time.
"Pick that up for me, would ya lover..."

Should've received an Oscar for Raising Arizona...one of the funniest flicks ever and he was fabulous. Well, maybe not for an Academy Award, but you know what I mean. Seems like a genuine down to earth man!
I remember watching this as a teen, when fights were on national tv. It was a beatdown, but Cobb never went down.
an articulate man, who made the most out of what he had.
I never knew he was a boxer. Loved him in "Raising Arizona". Great film.
Brilliant!,..one of best interviews/guests ever!…X
The level of humility on display here is masterful.
I remember this show and saw it when it first played.
Loved watching Tex Cobb ever since then!
To bad there are not shows like the Carson show anymore, that entertained us with quality guest like Tex and many others, thank God for clips like this great laugh with few tears of joy once mixed when becomes incredibly hilarious!!!!!!
Never met Tex, but I met Mr Holmes at a Car show that had sports celebrities signing memorabilia.
After his signing time was up, he came outside to the car show. He checked out my old Cadillac and asked to sit in her. Afterwards he took some pictures with the guys and was very personable and friendly!
He's still in great shape, and shook his hand when he was leaving...wow,
Big hands.
This was last year
That man is one class act!!!
this guy is funny and smart. it's no wonder he managed a fight with one of the greats. Larry was an amazingly talented fighter.
Randall tex Cobb what a class act. Heart of Gold.....
What a great sense of humor! What a great guy!
One of the magic people. American legend.
Had no idea of his existence up to now........what a great person.....presence.....real star
He has been in a lot of movies and some tv shows. He was the mystreious oulaw bounty hunter biker Leonard Smalls in the movie Raising Arizona. That was probably one of his most well known roles
What a Fun sense of humor! We need more people like him! 👍
Tex Cobb was always a cool guy. He was a tough guy but it's great that people got to see his sense of humor. Johnny knew how to step back and be the straight man, as well when he needed to step in a give the interview a jolt. He was the master of late night.
What a class act. I love how the interviews were in this time.
Had the honor of having a beer with him in Philadelphia before this fight, awesome guy and so down to earth.
I remember him for his role as the dancing Vietnam vet in "Uncommon Valor" with Gene Hackman and Patrick Swayze.
Sailor. He had his grenade as a necklace. Probably his best role for his career.
He was in one of my favorite movies. Uncommon Valor.
A rare combination of comedic timing, wit, strength, flexibility, intelligence, and humility. There are few men of his caliber walking the earth.
