Steve Perry was one of those rare cats who could replicate his studio vocals in concert every damn time. Even greats like Robert Plant often couldn't manage to hit their studio notes on stage, so the live versions of their songs frequently sounded quite different than what you heard on their albums. Not the case with Journey.
Seen a video they ran Steve Perry's vocals thru a auto tune. He naturally sings pitch perfect. Very very few ppl can do that. Why his vocals are so attractive.
I saw that too and they determined you could actually auto tune any performance by using Steve Perry's voice, now THAT'S SOMETHING! Watch on You Tube "Steve Perry - The Voice - Vocal Range. ruclips.net/video/MPl-s3XcT6k/видео.html
To me, Perry's 10 year run in his prime as a vocalist is like Jordan was to basketball, Tiger was to golf, and Gretzky was to hockey. Dominant, and on another level to the competition.
Steve Perry's singing in the live concert in Houston, circa 1981 I believe, is amazing. His energy, amazing. It's here on RUclips. Any Journey fan HAS to see it. It's fabulous!
Steve's control is sick. No matter how much running around he does when he performs live on stage, he is never out of tune or breath. One of only a few bands who sound better live than in the studio! Keep going down this rabbit hole!!
Jon Bon Jovi nicknamed him The Voice for a reason...there it is!!! When you have talent like that, it's supposed to be easy and effortless and truly god given because those kinds of voices only come around once in a while.
I think it was Bill Graham the concert promoter that coined that nickname before Bon Jovi was on the radar at all....I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure.....
Jamal....i grew up in the 70s. There was something about hanging out with your friends partying. Getting home for curfew. Making a bologna and chip sandwich and watching The Midnight Special!!!!!!! Made for great memories. Thanks for bringing them back!✌❤
His vocals sound technically good here. But, to me it sounds kind of stiff, like he's nervous. It's kind of low energy compared to the studio version. Just how it's hitting me.
@@dusty3913 Agreed. He is a touch tentative here. Like he's just starting to sync with the band. When you watch later Journey you see all of the wheels turning (pun intended) and everyone fully gelled in. Still, Steve SANGS it. There is simply no other voice like his. /d

That's important to note because Shon and Rollie founded Journey. Bringing in Perry and, later, Jonathan Cain (who replaced Greg Rollie when he retired), was a huge leap of faith, but it shot Journey into the stratosphere

1978. I still have this vinyl LP. I saw Journey in 1975 before Steve Perry was in the band. This performance was at the very beginning of Steve Perry with Journey. You can tell by Neil Schon's afro. As I've said before. Steve Perry is from my part of the country back in the day. Perry is from Hanford, CA. He visited the local FM radio station KBOS in Tulare, CA a few times to get his name out there. He sang in several central California valley night clubs before getting connected to Journey. A DJ buddy from KBOS took a couple of pictures of himself, a few other DJs and Steve Perry at the radio station, which he sent me copies of via the internet.

Awesome story. I think it must have been cool to have been a Journey fan in the 1970’s - they were still under the radar. They got superstardom with Escape in 1981 but I think before Escape they were not as popular. You even go back to before Steve Perry joined. Who knew what was to come?
Jamal, this had to be within a year of the "Infinity" album's release. "Infinity" was released in 1978 and the follow-up "Evolution" was released a year later. The drummer in this performance was Aynsley Dunbar. He was with the band for their first four albums but left sometime after the release of "Infinity" and before the recording of "Evolution". Steve Smith replaced him.
Steve Perry has one of the most unique and greatest voices ever! He sounded just as great in the studio as he does out of the studio. Thanks Jamel for the great music and videos.
This is why you want to react to journey live. That long falsetto behind the guitar solo gets missed a lot when you listen to the official audio. It was the same thing in Mother Father. That part at the end kind of just fades in the background, and you don’t even know it’s a human voice in the recording.
Steve Perry had a killer voice. Met Steve and the band back in the day after performing at Orpheum Theater in Boston. Neil Shoen and I were the only ones with fros. He gave me his guitar pick. Funny!
The part during Neil Schon's guitar solo, when Steve Perry does the background vocal, is to me absolutely amazing. The actual music video shows him preparing for that part. Some other songs that I think are the best of the best singer (Steve Perry) are Somethin' To Hide, Still They Ride, Stone In Love, Send Her My Love and Only The Young.
When I watched the Midnight Special when I was young in the 70s, it was just a normal part of life. With the way things have become, I now see how extraordinary those times were. I think it could be done again, but it starts with us and what we hold in our hearts to be true.
Journey was one of my mom's favourite bands when I was younger in all because of Steve Perry, Years later when I went to med school I ended up in Grand Forks North Dakota and later on live in South Dakota for a spell, In those 2 States journey is just as big as they ever were and they have journey cover bands and every person in the area knows their music and I breaks out into singing it when they hear their songs, You can listen to any radio station in those 2 States it doesn't matter what type of music on that station they will still put a journey song on that station every once in a while during the day because they are that popular.
Please react to Journey's song "Feeling that Way" which showcases both Perry"s & Rollie's vocal talent. It's like a friendly back & forth competition of their voices in that song.💕😍
4:20 I couldn't imagine how they were laying this track in the studio and Steve Perry would do this and say "did you like that one"? Wanna do it another way?? Crazy talent

If you're listening on headphones, Patiently is an incredible track

Yes
I never knew that was Steve Perry's vocal backing the guitar solo. Amazing!
React to Journey, Open Arms and When You Love A Woman!! Please! 😎
One of my absolute favorite songs from Journey. Thank you for showing it some love~
I have always loved Journey. Before and during Steve Perry with the band.
This my favorite Journey song, and i think one of the best songs in rock history. Can't ever listen to this just once. Neil Schon is a killer guitarist, always have been amazed by his 'guitaristry'
Yeah! so happy you did this one! my fav Journey song by far.
Thanks for showing this video of Journey. Never had seen it before!... ❤❤❤ that song! Journey was one of the greatest bands!!!
Always loved this song, and so many others! 👍

Check out their “Greatest Hits”. Can’t go wrong.
The 1981 Houston concert version of this is incredible too. But I’ve never seen this one- so thanks, Jamel!!!!
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow! So true!
