This band has always worked well together. Great feel for each other without losing the grip on the soul of the song. Steve Perry - The Voice, Neal Schon - the real driving force of the music and his solo work is great compliment to Steve's vocals, Ross Valory - steady anchor, yet carries the music through the changes without being obtrusive, Jonathan Cain - great writer with perfect keyboard over/under lays. Steve Smith - one of the finest drummers in the business with a good dose of jazz. All members have satisfying backing vocals to Stev's excellent voicing.
Always one of my wife's and my favorite bands. Faithfully is our wedding song.

He had given up on the music industry and was working on his stepfather's turkey farm when he got a call from Herbie Herbert, Journey's manager. I’m case someone hasn’t already said, Schon and Rolie didn’t want Steve Perry in the band. They wanted a screamer, like Robert Plant, and the singer Perry ended up replacing Robert Fleischman. The band’s manager Herbie Herbert forced them to take Perry because they needed to get on the radio with their fourth album (first with Perry) or they would be dropped. The first song Schon and Perry wrote together, Patiently, came together in 15 minutes, and from then on everyone saw the light, that this was the new Journey.
To be clear, they recognized the talent, Perry just didn’t fit their vision of Journey, until they wrote together.

Also, the first time he quit was when his mother died and touring for almost 10 years straight burnt him out. He lost his love of singing. First time I saw Steve Perry in Journey was in 1978. Agree with "Mother Father" from this 1981 Houston concert! Steve Perry has often said its the single hardest Journey song to sing, yet he sounds so much better on it live than he did in the studio recording! Its honestly a shame that more people haven't reacted to it. That ending alone is so far superior to what 95% of the singers out there could manage.

Absolutely! I remember when I heard he joined Journey, I couldn't believe he would do that. Steve Smith could play with anyone. He was on JLP's Enigmatic Ocean with Allan Holdsworth.
