Crazy how 80's have so many incredible talent showing up, so many iconic voice that years later once you hear you can know who the singer. Mj, freddy, steve perry, prince, stevie wonder, and so many more. Just show how crazy the competition between the singer at that time.
Glad to see your reaction to this great group. Steve Perry is a local guy form the Central Valley here in California. Great guy and amazing singer. Thank you!
His voice is so powerful that it seems like he is effortlessly yelling the song. Most non-musicians don't realize that what they (the crowd) hear out front is not what musicians hear out of their vocals on stage (which makes it more amazing that he can pull of a studio quality recording LIVE.) Stage Monitor speakers (what the musicians hear) typically a dry mix without effects, no reverb, echo, etc. to combat feedback issues? and also balance of vocals, back up vocals, can seem OUT of balance and instruments too loud, not loud enough, BUT a good sound man makes it all sound good out front where it counts. Have played in situations where I could barely hear my own instrument/voice. Side note: It was rumored back in the day that his voice was so strong that it was hard on microphones. I would like to believe that rumor.
Steve is definitely one of the greats! It's surprising how most people don't realize how difficult it is to do what he does. Everybody wants to sing like Steve. Legendary iconic vocalist.
She said, "Penny dropping".... At 1st I thought she was gonna say "Panties Dropping". Yep! Love Steve Perry!! This band IS BY FAR THE GREATEST BAND EVER, "THE VOICE"-Steve Perry is so deserving of that title! But the best part is that THE ENTIRE BAND IS TRULY SPECIAL & STRAIGHT UP GOOD PEOPLE!! They all care about each other and are kind to one another, including new frontman Arnel Pineda... They speak well of one another & support each other & seem to enjoy & actually like each other. They want the best for each other & dont hesitate to speak out loud their feelings & the gratefulness of it all. Brothers in music & life.
Saw Journey on the Raised on Radio tour. Steve's voice could have shattered glass that night ! And he did it no visible effort..... Like he was sitting down for dinner.
Aside from being such a fine singer with great pitch and a pretty timbre, what always gets me is how Perry sells out emotionally to the performance very time. Whether it's in studio or on stage he always commits emotionally. You never feel cheated.
I love Steve Perry. He have the most brilliant and powerful voice I've heard, so buttery in the low range and neat in the highs. And I love your accent, Rebecca! Greetings from Italy!
Steve Perry was and still is recognized as ... "The Voice'. Steve Perry set the bar so high that it is impossible to reach it. You know you are listening to a true Rock Star when 40 years alter people are still listening to him. A voice so pure and powerful that it touches your very soul. Steve Perry sang 'Live' better than most sing in Studio. Even auto-tune would be wasted trying to make his natural voice 'better'. There is no substitution for true talent.
I'm quite entertained at the comments. Everyone trying to find the words to describe his voice. Give it up folks. There are no words. Just sit back and experience perfection.
"After the Fall" is the one that amazes me most. Perry's voice transcends human ability on that song. One of the few nice things about being older (I'm in my early 50's now) is that I was around back when these songs first came out. I was already a fanatic music LOVER even as a kid when Journey peaked. When these songs were initially released and everyone was hearing them for the first time it was unlike anything happening today. Somehow even back then we knew we were hearing what would be timeless classics. Bands and music were a big deal back then and everyone was talking about the incredible stuff coming out. The emphasis was on the quality of the music not how someone looked or danced or what their latest publicity stunt was…like in today's music scene. Young people today are so unfortunate. They didn't get to grow up with a music scene like we Gen-X'ers did. The only bad thing about that time was we mostly listened to it on crappy cassette or 8-track tapes on equally crappy stereo systems. So the advent to modern ultra-high definition formats breathed new life into these classics and we get to really hear them again for the "first" time. I love music so much.
Steve perry at his prime was nothing less of stellar ! He had a warm tone and his range was amazing but his phrasing of his notes and singing was unparalleled.
@@kgunitkeese17 yep Steve def deserved more on tht WE Are the WORLD recording, BRUCE of course was of the biggest ones to VOLUNTEER (after he did a concert btw as it shows in his RASPY rendition). Kenny loggins also deserved more imo

Saw Journey live in the 80's. I'd never seen a singer own the crowd the way that Steve did. Sings effortlessly, didn't pitch it down for easier performance, had the women screaming and the men flexing. It was amazing.
The song imagery is so visual, then he gives so much visual of his own, and the entire vocal, drum support, and bottom….just enough sweeteners, truly elegant..nothing wasted…wonderful performance, indeed….
Lungs made of gold for sure! Steve Perry has the best voice in rock! Please cover more of his live performances; like Mother, Father would be a great one. He is just amazing!
You can buy this entire Houston/‘81 concert on dvd (unsure if it was ever made in HD/BluRay format). One of my treasured concerts on dvd. For us drummers...Steve Smith is excellent in this.
It's so wonderful to see you compliment and accurately comment on how brilliant and ATHLETIC Perry's voice was in his prime here in 1981. He is simply one of the very few who's voice LIVE IN CONCERT is better than in the studio..! It's also heartwarming to see how moved you are by his voice.. something we all feel and you illustrate it perfectly.
Watching Steve perform in person was Amazing!!! He was the best live performer ever!!! The Raised On Raido concert was phenomenal! I love Steve’s solo albums as well. One of my favorite songs of his is “You Better Wait” from his “For the Love of Strange Medicine” album. The music video is fantastic! He is back after 25 years. His voice has change but he still sounds good to me. He’s been through a lot. But he still sings from his heart.
Now THIS is a singer. However much MUCH better tracks than this in their catalogue. Separate ways, mother father, faithfully, whos crying now to name a few . Steve Perry is a vocal icon
Rebecca! Hi! There are some things that you missed that I think you'll appreciate. 1. The concert was in 1980. There were no in your monitors. He only had wedges. There were no wedges on the ramps. Therefore, he didn't have the luxury of getting a pristine feed in order to base his pitch off of. 2. His pitch throughout the ENTIRE CONCERT was astonishing/he wasn't experiencing fatigue in any way that was audible. 3. Whenever he sung very high notes he would always tilt his head to the right AND it didn't affect his ability to hit those notes.
@@psychlos21 Escape tour started July 1981 wrapped up July 1982. Saw them in Yarmouth, Cape Cod. Standing room only!! His voice soared to the rafters and echoed around the building. When they finished people started stomping for an encore. The building literally started shaking. Never been to another show like that. The Cape showed Mr Perry how much we loved him that night. August 29 1981.
Jonathan Cain wrote the song. He didn’t join until after Captured was recorded in late 1980. As for the monitors, they were under the stage/ramps/risers.If you watch the entire show he goes to the same spots over and over. Early 80’s is when understage monitors really started becoming the norm for headliners.
Journey with Steve Perry is my favorite Group! It broke my heart when Steve stop singing. He can never be replaced by any imitator. Never! Did you know Prince asked permission to use their guitarist solo for Purple Rain. Prince was obviously a big fan too. And speaking of guitarist- damn sure one of the best in the business.
Journey "Send her my love." Steve Perry co-write it and it's one of his favorites. Watch live. Incredible. Faithfully, City lights are some of my faves as well.
Yeah, and he made 'Lovin Touchin Squeezin' sound great in that concert. Do you remember when it aired on live antenna TV on that Friday night in 1981? Brother that was history! The whole country watched it! I was selling ON TV door to door, and watched it at people's apartments, and drinkin their beer! I even ended up out by the pool!
Thank you so much for doing Steve Perry and Journey! I am a major fan girl too. I cannot believe people hearing the "Voice" and not appreciating it for what it is. I love Steve Perry. I got to see Journey but it was after Steve had left the band. It was the first singer who replaced him. He was not to bad. I would close my eyes sometimes and try to think it was him....... Did not work, because there is no one like him. Thank you again and take care of your self.......... :-)
Yes, very unique voice and a great band. "Who's Crying Now" is a very good performance to react to as well. Just saying :) EDIT: Don't we just adore 80's :D
Steve has spoken several times in interviews how he got really stressed trying to keep up with expectations of always hitting those high notes while on grueling long tours. He felt a lot of stress & anxiety because he felt it was all on him & his instrument, his voice. Touring back to back to back had taken it's toll on him and his voice. He has now emerged back out into the mainstream after many years of silence & is singing once again, but this time in a lower range. He is an amazing song writer & a gorgeous voice and Journey could have never risen to their success without his amazing talent. He kept on writing those love ballots hit after hit..
He can hit a lot of the notes but never seen certain songs because he can't get that high. Also I was very active in Singing in high school and college actually had a music scholarship and anybody that understands it is going to tell you that he doesn't sustain his notes. He's barely reaching the ones he's hitting. That's why he cuts them short. Also he has no tone like Perry does.
When I saw Journey Steve Perry belted out the start of Oh Sherry a cappella. You could hear a pin drop. It was one of the most amazing concert moments ever.
His voice is one-of-a-kind. It cuts straight to your heart. You could fall in love with this man just from his voice. By the way, you're adorable!☺ Sincerely, Carly

Closest of my generation is Cornell, but i truly believe Steve Perry is best.
Don't forget Rober Plant, Elvis and Steven Tyler
Mercury got only power in his voice and the tone itself was nothing special.. Great vocalists are Perry, SteveOverland, KenTamplin, ChrisOusey,
I agree, especially if you go by pure tone. They are more rock singers than rock-n-roll singers.
@Randy Marsh A good choice
Pick up a dvd of The 1981 Journey concert in Houston. It is an amazing show at the old Summit Arena where the Rockets played for a long time and is now Joel Olsteen's mega church...lol. Light up a doobie in there on Sunday morning in honor of the Journey concert. lol
It still boggles my mind that no one has done a reaction to “Oh Sherrie” yet. The strength and range that Steve did alone is just awesome.
A mi me encanta cantar esa canción
Oh Sherri blows this away and showcases his voice
Oh Sherri blows this song away with his voice
One of the BEST lead singers of ALL time! Steve Perry, one of the first rockers to show it's okay to do ballads and STILL rock!!!
Finally someone with the eloquence to describe and react to one of the best songs ever written. And yes I agree when we are gone and turned to dust people will still be listening to this song.
His voice is so unique because it has such a soul to it, even to this day. Again, a wonderful reaction!
Ken Arnold can she react to Darcy Lynn !!! Please :)
He recently put out a new album, and he sounds pretty good!
@@dianamichelle5643 I agree :)

Unique in rock. Listen to Sam Cooke. Steve stole his sound from him.
Hell, I'm a dude, and when I hear and see Steve Perry, even "I" fangirl out....
Hahahahahaha….
This dude is unique and awesome!!!!
Thank you!
Steve Perry, no one like him! My favorite song too. I feel elevated beyond this world listening to him.
I believe it. You can feel how much air he’s pushing.
Steve is much better live. You can feel the emotion no matter how many times he has sung the same song.
Just a fantastic voice. Love that man.❤⚘
Saw Journey on the Raised on Radio tour.
Lisa Marie word
I agree...perfection. 🖤🤘
Must agree perfection is something you just enjoying
Truth
Steve perry aka The Voice, one of the greatest rock singers of all time.
@@billscout3530 and you're just an arsehole with the iq of a wet teabag
Omg, that silky voice. One of my favourite singer, he just opens his mouth and...BOOM, I'm dead. His last solo album is pure magic. The Voice.
My son is 2 years old; I absolutely cannot wait till the day I get to introduce him to the greatness of Journey and Steve Perry!
His little bit of singing on We are the World was awesome.
Yes but I was disappointed to see that he only just got one line. He needed more. Bruce Springsteen sang a lot, same with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles
@@kgunitkeese17 yep Steve def deserved more on tht WE Are the WORLD recording, BRUCE of course was of the biggest ones to VOLUNTEER (after he did a concert btw as it shows in his RASPY rendition). Kenny loggins also deserved more imo
when i first heard his little part, i was like.. WHO THE F**K IS THAT? And then i went down the Journey rabbit hole for a while. Just his couple seconds stood out to me more than all the rest. (Cyndi a little bit)
He KILLED every take and really helped Cyndi Lauper, who could not get ger starting note. He was so great someone actually WHOOPED after one take. A talented guy and total pro.
@@marshabailey772 Yes, he actually stepped in and help Huey Lewis, Karen Carnes, and especially Cyndi Lauper on their take. They intinally had trouble on many takes, but he gave ideas and coached on them singing together harmonically. You see this on the behind the scenes.
I haven't seen any Steve Perry live performances that weren't electric! Thanks for reacting to this, Journey are one of my top 3 rock bands 😊👌
Steve is amazing singer his vocals are brilliant so soulful and unique
Got goosebumps again hearing what a voice. Also amazing quality for that year
I'm glad you've chosen Steve Perry and Journey. He is beautiful and that voice! His voice has aged but he's still amazing. Thanks for being a fangirl. X
Saw Journey live in the 80's. I'd never seen a singer own the crowd the way that Steve did. Sings effortlessly, didn't pitch it down for easier performance, had the women screaming and the men flexing. It was amazing.
I love those singers who sound better live than they do recorded. Steve Perry is one of those people.
INDEED!!!
Journey - Girl Can't Help It (Official Video)
One of their best live performances ever. When they get to the harmonies it's just sublime.
And this was live in 1981. No autotune!!!!!!
"lungs made of gold"....says it all !!
I was there, he was PERFECTION for 4 HOURS ❣❣❣❣
You can buy this entire Houston/‘81 concert on dvd (unsure if it was ever made in HD/BluRay format). One of my treasured concerts on dvd. For us drummers...Steve Smith is excellent in this.
@@bigwillie5717 ours available on iTunes as well.
I was at this concert and it was amazing
Steve Perry Is and Will Always Be The Golden Voice ♥️
C Kendall Young Hearts Forever, Missing You, I am - all great songs. He doesn’t have a single bad song.
I somehow think that many of those there didn't realize how amazing this vocal was until now. THE VOICE!!!
Now THIS is a singer. However much MUCH better tracks than this in their catalogue. Separate ways, mother father, faithfully, whos crying now to name a few . Steve Perry is a vocal icon
Steve Perry and Journey was a MASSIVE part of the soundtrack of the 80’s
Bill Scout tf are u talking about?
Painter Dood Absolutely
Rebecca!
1981
Early 80’s is when understage monitors really started becoming the norm for headliners.
yup... my first observations of when I saw this years ago. spot on!
One of the "GREATEST" vocalist ever!
I love you Steve Perry FOREVER😍🥰
His live performances are always epic. Listen to Send Her My Love or I'll Be Alright Without You. His voice is truly magic.
MR STEVE PERRY the best Malé voice ever no doubt about
Sebastian Bach rivsls that.. They're both phenomenal
.
There’s only one Steve Perry in the world, with his amazing voice, always the best now and forever!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
You nailed it when you said how tough it is to move around and sing while maintaining your breath! Very difficult!
Journey "Send her my love." Steve Perry co-write it and it's one of his favorites. Watch live. Incredible. Faithfully, City lights are some of my faves as well.
One of the greatest vocalists of all time, across any genre. Period.
The word you're struggling to find, Miss Rebecca, to describe exactly how timeless this song is...ANTHEM.
Open Arms from this same show is so incredible
Mother, Father is my absolute favorite, unbelievably strong performance
Yeah, and he made 'Lovin Touchin Squeezin' sound great in that concert. Do you remember when it aired on live antenna TV on that Friday night in 1981? Brother that was history! The whole country watched it! I was selling ON TV door to door, and watched it at people's apartments, and drinkin their beer! I even ended up out by the pool!
I agree. Open Arms is my favorite Journey song. Curiously, "Who's Crying Now" got a bigger audience reaction in the 1981 Houston concert.
One of the most fabulous singer i've ever heard !
No auto-tune or other electronic trickery just pure talent
Thank you so much for doing Steve Perry and Journey! I am a major fan girl too. I cannot believe people hearing the "Voice" and not appreciating it for what it is. I love Steve Perry. I got to see Journey but it was after Steve had left the band. It was the first singer who replaced him. He was not to bad. I would close my eyes sometimes and try to think it was him....... Did not work, because there is no one like him.
Thank you again and take care of your self.......... :-)
Yes, very unique voice and a great band. "Who's Crying Now" is a very good performance to react to as well. Just saying :)
EDIT: Don't we just adore 80's :D
Steve has spoken several times in interviews how he got really stressed trying to keep up with expectations of always hitting those high notes while on grueling long tours. He felt a lot of stress & anxiety because he felt it was all on him & his instrument, his voice. Touring back to back to back had taken it's toll on him and his voice.
He has now emerged back out into the mainstream after many years of silence & is singing once again, but this time in a lower range. He is an amazing song writer & a gorgeous voice and Journey could have never risen to their success without his amazing talent. He kept on writing those love ballots hit after hit..
Arnel Pineda (current Journey singer) does a good job of this but obviously no one can touch Steve Perry. He is a one of a kind talent.
Yep! And he didn't write those tunes
By the way...My humble opinion is that Steve Perry is probably the best "rock " singer in history. Just my opinion.
certainly top 3 with Fredie and Rob Plant
@@gavindenton6821 And Tom Jones, Jahn Teigen and Bruce Springsteen. Listen to Bruce singing Something in the night, or Streets of fire.. youll know..

When I saw Journey Steve Perry belted out the start of Oh Sherry a cappella. You could hear a pin drop. It was one of the most amazing concert moments ever.
I love watching you get so passionate about the music you listen to! Another great reaction!!
His voice is one-of-a-kind. It cuts straight to your heart. You could fall in love with this man just from his voice. By the way, you're adorable!☺ Sincerely, Carly
