Been waiting for your next Journey reaction. So many great songs to react to. Steve Perry's vocal range and tone and Neal Schon's (shawn) bring their very best vocals and guitar riffs✨ those 2 are magic ✨ you said you hoped Wheel in The Sky would blow you away. All their songs will. Just when you think you found the one you like most, there'll be another one that'll comes along and knock you out. They are great in studio, but live they're exceptional, they add flava and it shows their connection to their audience. It's awesome to watch. Any song from the 1981 Escape Tour live from Houston.
Also: Still They Ride, Mother Father, Open Arms,
Why Can't This Night Go on Forever, Stone in Love, Don't Stop Believin', Lovin' Touchin' , Squeezin', Lights, Stay With Me Awhile.

Agree. They were probably the most consistent big act from about 1978-1985 or so. I saw them live in about 1983 and they were even better than I had anticipated. I was mostly into moderately heavier or more prog-rock; Rush & Yes were my favorites, but they girlfriend and some friends of hers really wanted to go to the Journey concert so we went (Indy at old Market Square Arena). Sold out- 18k. And they were on fire and incredibly good live. They were heavier live than the records and did some heavier jams throughout the show. Neil Schon was spectacular - not unexpected ofc - we all knew he was great from his work with Journey but also his records with Jan Hammer - a highly under-appreciated rock guitarist. But it was Steve Smith on drums that blew me away - so powerful live. To say nothing about how incredible Steve Perry’s vocals were live - he was even better than the records live. Most vocalist can’t recreate their studio performances - Steve Perry could exceed them. I do wish I’d seen them on the Infinity Tour, as it would have been great to have seen them with Greg Rollie on his last tour. I dug the back and forth vocals he and Perry would do. Those were/are my favorite Journey songs.

I saw them twice in their 1980s heyday. Steve Perry was the best live vocalist I've ever seen. What you heard in the studio recording was what you heard at the concert. Go back and listen to his vocals during the guitar solo in this song; he perfectly matched that live (no auto-tune back then!). I recommend "Anyway You Want It" next (if you've seen the movie, "Caddyshack", you'll recognize it).

The wheel in the sky is a metaphor for the sun and the moon, so the wheel in the sky turning refers to the days and nights going by despite everything else going on, and the time can seem like it goes by quickly or slowly. The song has a theme describing the sadness caused by separation. According to Journey’s Time compilation, “Wheel in the Sky” began as a yearning poem written by bassist Ross Valory’s wife, Diane.

You were talking about Perry's higher vocal moments, but you didn't comment, so maybe didn't notice, the high backing vocalization he does during the guitar solo. It's a little lower in the mix and blends so well that you hear it without actually noticing, but once you take note of it, you won't soon forget it. I think its often mistaken for keys, but its actually Perry. Mother Father, especially live 1980 Houton, is an amazing must listen. Also Sweet and Simple and Winds of March.

People used to draw a calendar as a 'wheel,' way back before modern calendars. The solstices were at the top and bottom, equinoxes at either side and whatever feasting days helped folk track when to sow seed, when to harvest, when to slaughter and salt meats . . . a nature calendar, if you will.
Still love this song. It sounds just as good in 2023 as it did back when it came out-I was either a teen or a young adult. I've already forgotten what year it came out, and you mentioned it 10-11 minutes ago! 🙄

In fact their "Live in Houston" concert videos is the same tour I saw them on.
I can humbly say I've had the pleasure/privilege of seeing probably 3 of the greatest voices in rock live.
    Steve Perry, twice '82 & '83, Ann Wilson in 1977 and Freddie Mercury, twice '80 & '82.
A couple others who are memorable Dennis DeYoung, twice '78 & '82, Billy Squier, '81 & '82 when he opened for Queen.

Yes, I've seen them live 4 times. They actually sound better live. Best concert ever 1983 live at City Park Stadium in New Orleans. Day of Rock and Roll. Bryan Adams, Zebra, Foghat all opened for Journey that day. You should check out a couple of deep cuts that show off Steve Perry's vocals. "Winds Of March" also off the Infinity album and "Mother Father" off the 1981 Escape album. The entire 1981 concert was filmed live in Houston so you can get some great live footage from this concert, including "Who's Crying Now" where Neal Schon has an extended wicked guitar solo. P.S. Journey does not have a bad song in their catalog with Steve Perry singing on albums 4 through 10. This includes the 1980 live album Captured. Also, Steve Perry has 3 solo albums as well. This will be a deep dive and a long "Journey". Pun intended. Thanks and God Bless.

Steve Perry has one of the greatest voices in pop/rock. He is a true countertenor ..with a range of a high tenor/alto. His tone is clear and full and he does not sing with any distortion, in contrast to hard rock and metal singers. Like Jon Anderson of Yes and Geddy Lee of Rush, his voice is high…..but in contrast to them. Perry’s voice has great power and richness. It never sounds “thin” as many other high tenors so.
This song is satisfactory as an introduction, but be aware that in no way does it show off Perry’s vocal chops in full. A current singer in that same league, or even better, is Adam Lambert, who in addition to his solo career, is now the vocalist for Queen when they tour. Incredible vocal chops.

SalvoG, Hi Thank you so much for reacting to Journey. If you get into reacting to Journey going forward be prepared to be amazed. Journey with Steve Perry is "The Voice" a moniker given to Steve by Jon Bon Jovi and you'll see why. His Counter-Tenor Altino vocal range is phenomenal. Please listen to the official video of Wheel in the Sky, I think 1978. Steve Perry and Neal Schon (pronounced shawn) on lead guitar have a combined solo, and if your not watching the video, most reactors will miss it (and it seemed like you missed it)when Steve comes in with that falsetto range and does it so effortlessly. It's magic, those two have crazy vocal and guitar chemistry that you'll see time and again throughout Journeys' amazing playlist, these musicians; Steve Perry, lead vocals, Neal Schon -lead guitar, Jonathan Cain-Keyboards, (wrote all Journey's iconic songs) Ross Valory-Bass and Steve Smith Drum virtuoso started playing when he was 6 are all so talented. I recommend reactions to any songs from the 1981 Escape tour live from Houston. "Mother Father from that tour is amazing. Vocally it's a very difficult song to do and J. Cain said Steve did that in one take on the studio version, but live is other worldly. Also "When you Love a Woman" official video 1987, "Open Arms" escape tour 1981, "Lights" Official Video 1978 Neal slays his guitar solo on that one, "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" official video. "Stay Awhile" Live from Houston 1981 Escape tour, "Still They Ride Live in Tokyo 1983. Again, Thank you for reacting to Journey and if you go down their play list you will be fascinated and so glad you did and so will your audience! promise! Peace

Nilsson - Without You (1971), Styx - Lady (1972), Aerosmith - Dream On (1973), Nazareth - Love Hurts (1974) plus lots of others depending on your definition of a power ballad, but a song from 1982 is a good decade later than a number of songs that arguably lead the genre so it definitely doesn't qualify as the first.

You just barely got a taste of Steve Perry's amazing vocal range... you won't be disappointed going down this rabbit hole. Fortunate to have seen them live a couple of times in the 70's, they sounded every bit as good (if not better) than their studio recordings. You mentioned you haven't heard any voices you haven't liked from this time period.. probably because you actually had to be able to sing to be the lead singer of a band.. no auto-tune to make you sound good back in the day.

Wheel in the Sky is definitely a classic! ...and while you're technically correct when you say that it wasn't a "single," you have to realize that the era in which this song/album were released was dominated by AOR Radio Stations (AOR = Album Oriented Rock), where radio station playlists typically went deep into an album vs. playing the one or two "hits" record companies would release that corporate bosses would tell them to play. The on air DJs of that era had a lot more freedom than they do today. They would literally get a freshly released album, listen to the whole thing, and then play the songs they personally liked the best. A ton of songs/artists were discovered this way, and Wheel in the Sky was/is a staple of that format.
BTW... If you want to get a great overview of early Journey, and more specifically, the first 3 albums of the Steve Perry era (Infinity, Evolution, and Departure), check out their live album called Captured. Another incredible live performance by the band featuring original keyboardist/vocalist Greg Rolie, who left the band soon after. He was replaced by Jonathan Cain, who you saw in the Escape Tour videos from Houston. .

Journey catalogue is amazing...vast and deep. My favorite Journey albums are Infinity and Evolution. Every single song on both albums are masterpieces. Looks like you missed the epic-stratospheric note Steve Perry hit during Neal Schon’s guitar solo. Journey is my favorite band. Saw Journey in 1983 during the Frontiers Tour. 3 sold out shows in my hometown. They were mega-huge. They sound even better live. Been a fan since 1981. React to Don’t Stop Believing or Lights or Mother Father Live in Houston Concert 1981-truly epic. Journey On!

I was a huge fan of Journey from the 80's - saw them live at the Rose Bowl with Aldo Nova, Triumph (Rik Emmett high register singer!) Blue Oyster Cult and Journey. Biggest food fight ever!! Shoes and Nacho's flying. Try listening to Ordinary Man by Triumph live and you'll know he is legit.

I remember in the early 80's when I joined a rock band after graduating from high school. I had never heard of Journey, but I started learning and singing Journey songs. Watching you discover Journey feels the same as when I discovered Journey.

Foreigner is another Great band too.👌 Love Steve's high pitch tone from 8.51 of the video to 9.02, its perfection.😎👌

Lol. You do realize that heavenly sound rising steadily in the background between 8:48 and 9:02 is Steve Perry's voice?
