Those opening chords can stop people in their tracks as they all tune into this song. Try it at a mall one day and you'll see everyone of a certain age stop, tilt their heads like dogs when they hear a certain sound, and then start singing along or going into a trance as they slip back into yesteryear. For a few years, you could hear a Journey song pouring out of car stereos at every high school or college parking lot as they drove in and out.
I enjoyed your reaction to what you were carefully listening too! Because it’s the same thing as I hear. You can not go wrong with Steve Perry, or Steve with “Journey.” Absolutely the best!!!🙏🏻🙏🏻✝️
@bryanCJC2105 The same thing happened when In The air Tonight came on the radio. You could be riding along, stop at a red light, and everyone in their cars were doing air drums . I never laughed so hard!
Neil's guitar perfectly matches how Steve is singing. If Steve sings soft, Neil play soft sweetness. When Steve hits it hard, so does Neil. Perfectly complementing each other.
Tex, don't forget Steve Smith's drumming, man. How could you have left him out? LOL! His drumming composition was perfect for all of the songs he played.
Simply the best! There is no better vocalist than Steve Perry. In his prime his voice was pure magic. I love how Neil makes his guitar solo sound like his guitar is crying. He plays with so much damn feeling.
Amen. As a newly inspired (beginner) guitarist when this came out, I was forced to notice that bass guides it all. Contributed to my respect for where bass can really bring a tune to life. Neil's guitar is awesome, but it needs that foundation.
Steve's voice never gets old! Thanks for the Journey reaction! The guitar solo is longer and even more impressive in the live version. One of my fav Neal Schon solos
This song is gold! You must also listen to the Grammy-nominated WHEN YOU LOVE A WOMAN from the Trial By Fire album (1996). It is a stunningly beautiful song - yes, haunting (in a great way!) and perfect. Goosebumps all over. Steve Perry and Journey are a gift.
We had it so good with music back when, an act had to be very special to stand out. Journey is one of those acts. The Escape album is unforgettable once you've heard it, as are many other songs they gave us. They are, deservedly, legends.
I am glad you did the studio on this because when you do the live version from Houston 1981 you will appreciate it that much more. This is actually my favorite Journey song. Please do the live soon. Steve's vocals are even better, the energy is higher and Neal Schon's outro is better and extended. I am willing to bet you that you will find the live version at least 10X's better. Thanks and God Bless.
I remember when this came out. It was a much bigger hit than Don't Stop Believing, but didn't stand the test of time as much. Love this whole album, I still have my vinyl copy I bought in high school.
Please see it live ! The vocal performance is on another stratospheric level. If you loved the studio version the live version will blow you away. Also listen to "Still she Cries" Its a hidden gem, Steves vocals are so hauntingly beutiful and the piano and guitar together with Steves voice is a masterpiece.
I remember this song was featured in the ending scene (with credits) of the 1982 movie, The Last American Virgin. That put in perspective about the heartbreak (and betrayal!) message of both the film and the song.
Great reaction SalvoG I'm so glad. In my youth there's great bands and singers, Journey, Foreigner, Reo Speedwagon for rock ballads and for listen Rush, Ozzy, Deep purpple and now still been great... Sorry I'm write nonsense things just feelings in my mind. Great reaction Again SalvoG
This one tugs at my heartstrings. I've seen them live at least 6 times. I was at the iconic Escape Tour in Houston (1981) and every time I see someone react, it really stirs things inside of me. I loved your reaction to Don't Stop Believin'.
Journey was so amazing! Brings back so many memories! Steve Perry has the best voice! For another one from Escape, I love "Keep on Runnin!" For an earlier song, "Patiently" is hauntingly beautiful, in my opinion. Dang I miss this group!
Just found your station today....love your reactions! It makes me so happy when someone of your generation discovers the bands of my generation. The music by these bands will never be replicated, IMHO. If you get a chance, check out Disturbed's cover of Simon and Garfunkel's, The Sound of Silence.
I will never forget when I went to my first Journey concert in Champaign Illinois while in high school. It was the thrill of a lifetime hearing "the voice". The band is amazing, Steve Perry... there are no words! GOAT!
My favorite Journey song since it was new. Glad you finally get to know its brilliance....one of the best bridges and guitar solos in rock history...great reaction!
You are gonna get "emotional " about this song. It's one of my all-time favorite song from Journey. It's just FIRE 🔥!!! The message of the song is very deep and if you have been in love....this song will get to you.
SalvoG you are so funny 😂. Totally awesome to see your reaction to this. I grew up on Journey and saw them in concert several times. I love watching other people discover this music, it was so wonderful. Keep doing what you do bud.
Every track on every album is a masterpiece when it comes to JOURNEY this was my music growing up as a teen. If only I could go back and do it all over again ❤
Please put Still They Ride on your Journey list. Such a beautiful song that didn’t get as much airplay as their hits that I remember but a lot of us loved. Steve’s vocals really soar on that one.
I got to hear it on the radio the other day on a repeat of American Top 40. It was the highest debut of the week. It was amazing hearing it on the radio.
Steve's voice on some notes has a haunting quality. I don't think there's been a better front man. You can pick his voice out of a myriad of singers. Don't apologize for only doing one song. You have a life and work to do. We will still be here!
I landed in LA from London in 1981.This was always on the radio and transports me back to driving on the freeways on warm nights.Keep going back to this decade and good to see your appreciation .The anthem for my time there was Supertramps "Goodbye Stranger".
The whole song is so atmospheric, but the outro guitar solo is phenomenal and picks up the mood perfectly. Outstanding song by the whole group but props to Steve Perry and Neil Schon.
The winners on this one for me are whoever arranged the background vocal melodies and harmonies (probably Perry) and the bass player Ross Valory. The long outro was unusual even for the late 70s & early 80s, but it's one of those songs that build up such good will that people WANT to vibe with it a bit longer, so the outro was rarely cut short, at least in my memory.
When you watch the live version of this in Houston 1981 and hear how Steve hits some of those notes and how long he holds them and then Neal's live solo, you will be speechless!
A very powerful song. This is like a late night high speed driving song for me. Go out and do a few pulls with this song just rippin. A timeless classic!
Great reaction!!! If you really want to experience Steve at his silky smooth best listen to "Wheel in the sky" live in Osaka Japan 1980! You can thank me later!!! Love from Texas🤠
Esta cancion es espectacularmente hermosa, desde la armonía que genera al escucharla, el contenido de la cancion que tambien es preciosa, y la voz maravillosa e inigualable de Steve Perry !!!!
I had the record album in 33..and CD. Gave the 33 to my 47 year old son a couple years ago, who was 6 when this album was released. Now he’s playing all the rock from that era on the weekends with his band. Will this great era of music ever be repeated. I think not.
One of my favorite Journey songs. Speaking of a song being haunting, check out Send Her My Love, if you haven’t already. The song makes me cry EVERY time. It is my number one favorite Journey song.
I absolutely love Journey and will put Steve's voice as one of the best and flexible voices out there, he was singing Blues early on and was amazing. At 45, the song "Only the Young" really hits hard now. Neal's hand in these songs is often overlooked and is much more brilliant than many give him credit for, he is an amazing guitar player!
Salvo g please react to Still They Ride live from Tokyo 1983. Steve's vocals are phenomenal, one you'll really want to hear on repeat. There maybe songs you may not find his vocals hauntingly beautiful, but there are many. For me, this version is one of them. As we as is "When You Love a Woman".
For me, a few bands are right in the breadbasket of classic rock. Journey's there, along with Foreigner and Boston. I think the output of these bands is like right at the center of what most people would consider "rock." And like many bands, they had that one guy with THE VOICE.
Hey SalvoG! I have to ask...how were you shaded from so much different music growing up? I feel like you have so much to catch up on. But we love watching you on this journey.
Alright, when I was about 10...I can't say I cared about music...I was more worried about power rangers. As a kid, 98 degrees and Britney Spears etc. ruled the airwaves. Internet was hardly a thing. We listened to what was on the radio station. Surely, by my teens and into my high-school age, I was into music of course. Music like Taking Back Sunday, Linkin Park, System of a Down, Green Day, Paramore, Blink-182 and Incubus just to name a few. I could of CARED LESS about anything from the 70s 80s etc. I had no idea what it could of even sounded like, it wasn't even an IDEA to me. Into my early 20's it was mostly rap and some mainstream pop. My late 20's was A LOT of podcasts and ambient music, hardly any popular music and certainty not the radio. Music to me, at this point in my life was boring. It wasn't until my early 30's (now) that I decided to see what the hell music even sounded like before the 90s. For example, I could ask my entire friend group to name 1 Led Zeppelin song and they would say who? This music is mostly lost to my generation, that's just the truth. Anyways, sorry for the long explanation but long story short, this music was nowhere to be found my entire childhood/teen years. Lol
@@SalvoG It is kind of sad, to think of music being lost, in an entire generation. But I LOVE to see everything you are now discovering, and enjoying. Synth-Pop, Folk, Classic Rock, Musicals...very few people have such an eclectic interest in music. Most only like one or 2 genre's. I can find songs in EVERY single genre, that I like. Journey has several songs like this, that end with a ripping guitar solo by Neal Schon. "Stone in Love", "I'll Be Alright (w/out you)", "After the Fall", "Send Her My Love", "Girl Can't Help It" among others.
This is a great song and reaction! Journey,Steve Perry, hard to go wrong!Live in Houston in 81 has been suggested by many.Great performance there! Separate Ways and Faithfully off of Frontiers Album from 1983 are great too!

Ahhhh, teenage nights singing and crying with the radio or records……..
In the car, singing the words and the guitar solo, horribly in my case.
So sweet
Yes! This came out right before my divorce. I’ll never forget this song no matter how absent-minded I become! 🥹

Tex, don't forget Steve Smith's drumming, man. How could you have left him out? LOL! His drumming composition was perfect for all of the songs he played.
Can't go wrong with ANY Journey song with Steve! His vocals are just above and beyond, that's for sure! That's the reason why he's "THE VOICE!"
If you love this one you'll definitely love their song, Send Her My Love!❤
Absolutely a must--- talk about haunting, Send Her My Love is at the top of my Journey favorites - it just crushes your heart, so moving!
I love your appreciation of this era of music. You’re hitting all the good stuff.
Ya , YOU GOT THAT RIGHT, IF WE COULD GO BACK❤
Simply the best! There is no better vocalist than Steve Perry. In his prime his voice was pure magic. I love how Neil makes his guitar solo sound like his guitar is crying. He plays with so much damn feeling.
One of Neal's best solos. So tasteful and exquisitely written.
And his playing is so clean. No string scratch unless he means to do it, and the timing on it is fantastic. The bass line in the song is great too.
For me, the best solo it's "I'll be alright without you" really hits the soul
The great Ross Valory on bass and Steve Smith on drums, providing the solid pulse underneath those brilliant vocals, guitars, and keys!
Amen. As a newly inspired (beginner) guitarist when this came out, I was forced to notice that bass guides it all. Contributed to my respect for where bass can really bring a tune to life. Neil's guitar is awesome, but it needs that foundation.

I wonder if when you next do Journey you could do a song called Still They Ride? It doesn't get done very much. It is an amazing example of his voice.
"Send her my love" and "still they ride."
