When I was a young drummer, living in Phoenix, Arizona, journey's drummer, Steve Smith, did a clinic in our town. He took the time to help me understand something that was quite complex because I'm a left-handed drummer and all the books at the time were written for right-handed players. He actually took the time to not only write out charts for me, but he allowed me to record him on my portable cassette player so I would have it to reference after the clinic. This was 1979-1980. He's a great drummer!
How cool is that.
did BJ say it was a female drummer?
Whoa, So lucky.
Wow, great story and yes, he was a great drummer. But based on your experience I'd say he is an even better human being.
Steve Smith is an outstanding drummer!
Lol, the drummer is a guy, Steve Smith. You should really listen to Steve Perry's solo of Foolish Heart.
I appreciate Journey even more now, because no one is close even decades later. Maybe never!
Can't go wrong w Journey!! PERIOD!! 🔥🔥🔥 👐👐👐👐
Journey is SUCH a deep dive of hits...keep going with them for sure :) Now you see why Steve Perry was one of the featured vocalists on USA For Africa's "We Are the World" :)
You’re right but Springsteen stoled the show as always…..
His speaking voice sounds remarkably like his unique singing voice. The texture and the ethereal quality are all still there when he talks. More Journey and even solo Steve please!✌🏽
Journey is a really special, and talented band, and we were really spoiled in my generation with all of the vocal talent out there, but Steve Perry was untouchable. I think you two would really appreciate the vocals of a Canadian band called Triumph, as well. Check out "Lay it on the Line" live at the 1983 US Festival. The lead guitarist, lead songwriter, and lead singer on most of their songs, Rik Emmet is excellent. Love you two!🙂
From one John kelley to another I couldn't agree with you more
Agreed….Triumph was an enigma….we loved them!
As an Englishman, my first visit to the US was in 1981, I went to a bar and the music playing was sublime, it was Journey. I have loved them ever since.
You should hear him singing 'When You Love a Woman', his voice is pure beauty on that one.
It is here also Sharilyn
Agreed Sharilyn. Great video.
I agree ☝️
Agree...but his live (any live) versions of 'Mother, Father is something else.
Good Morning Girl from the Departure LP, is Steve Perry's greatest vocal in his time in Journey.
He is simply amazing. No ONE can compare to “THE VOICE”!!!!! His range is incredible and he is flawless!!!
Jon Bon Jovi named Steve Perry “The Voice”
Good to learn Asia's guitar taste. That solo by Neal was something timeless.
Journey “Mother, Father, Sister, Brother” most amazing vocal performance live in Houston 81
Mhm....great song indeed!
An added FYI: Neal Schon, lead guitar, played with Santana when he was 15. The drummer is Steve Smith.
That's impressive ,Jamie. .Wow .Hard to imagine mastering the guitar enough for Carlos Santana to say "Yeah, I want that kid in my band."
One of the most underrated guitar players. He is amazing.
He had killer afro back then, too.
Came here to say that about Neil Schon! 🎸🔥
I thought he was 17 when he started with Santana. Not that it really matters. 15 or 17, it’s still phenomenal.
Yes! Love my Journey! Please react to Mother/Father live in Houston`81..you will love it Asia! Keep On Rockin'
There's a reason Journey was one of the best arena rock bands out there. They played to sold out houses wherever they went, because they consistently sounded better in concert than on the album.
I know they still tour btw, but c'mon, not the same without Steve.
Neal Schon doesn’t get enough credit for his guitar playing. He started in Santana when he was like 15. Him and Gregg Rollie both left years later to start Journey.
Have you done mother-father live in Houston? OMG. Drummer not female.
Steve Perry has one of the best, most effortless voices of all time. No auto tune needed. Ever.
Mother Father live Houston 1981 is a must! His vocals and emotions will blow your mind.
Yes!!! So amazing!
BJ another live cut you would like is called, “The Girl Can’t Help It.” Also try anything from the Frontier’s album. Btw, the drummer is Steve Smith. Not a female. Lol Asia you did miss out girl.
Steve "Machine gun" Smith, yeah!! 🙂
Also "I'll be Alright Without You", also from the Raised on Radio tour is smokin' hot!
@@larrywright6214 i agree
@@larrywright6214 also why can't this night go on forever
Steve Perry one of the greatest underated voices of all time ❣️
What do you mean, "underrated"? He's famous all over the world and one of the most influential singers in rock history, EVERYBODY who listens to rock knows who Steve Perry is, and how good he is.
@@erikthompson619 heheh yeah, I always like comments like OPs. No basis, just words.
@@erikthompson619Known as one of the greatest, if not the greatest rock vocalist of all time, " The Voice". OP is either a total idiot, clueless or just trying to illicit a reaction.
Mother Father live in Houston is a vocal masterpiece!
You should check "mother father " live from Houston 81. IT is the masterpiece of live performances! Unbelievable voice. He reaches the sky with his voice there, ani Angelic note ! 🔥🔥🔥 IT is must see for Asia, she will defienetly love it
If you haven't reacted to it. Check out "Mother, Father" live in Houston. You will be on the floor over Steve Perry's voice at the end. AMAZING!
Journey Escape album was huge in the 80’s ! Played that cassette over and over in 86 in high school ! 🔥👏💯
Keyboardist Gregg Rolie was also a founding member of Journey and Santana. He also plays with Ringo Starr . He’s lived in the Austin area for years.
This is a beautiful Classic, the guitar solo is done by Neal Schon, his solo is soul wrenching and breath taking in the studio version, with no distorted tone, just a clean Bluesy tone.
And as always, Steve Perry's singing is drenched with 1960's RnB Soulful singing.
One of Rocks greatest ballads ever.
They sure don't write or play this masterfully anymore in the Rock genre, todays Rock music is so one dimensional.
Just listen to that solo, it has some much emotion, you can practicly feel the sadness in each note.
Back in a 1989 guitar survey , this was one of the top five guitar solos in the 1980's, in that particular poll among guitar players..
It edged out many fire breathing solos by Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and others .
Steve helps on keys on several songs, such as Stone in Love. Before joining Journey, he was a drummer/singer in the bands he was in. He also plays bass guitar. Steve worked as a sound engineer while trying to get into the music business. It's no wonder he knows how to write and perform such great music.
Journey toured crazy long and grueling tours back in the day. In interviews Steve has done in the last couple of years, he has spoken of how neurotic and maddening it was to keep that schedule as a singer singing that catalog of songs. He is a perfectionist and always was afraid to let down the fans, the band and himself. He worked hard to make it appear effortless. I loved Journey but Steve is a rare talent.
.
Steve Perry has the best voice in rock and roll.
My favorite tune by them is Faithfully, and a close 2nd Wheel In The Sky! Steve Perry is recording again Hasta luego!
“FOOLISH HEART” by steve perry is a must react.
Steve isn't the only one that can sing in that band... Neal's melodic soloing is brilliant.
Must hear Steve Perry sing Mother Father live in Houston 1981...will blow your mind Asia !!!
First lead solo I personally ever learned to play. Neal Schon is a guitar god. Seeing Journey with Toto opening next Monday night in Seattle.
Good times...from Oregon! catch a rising star concert - Journey for $1.92 promoted by KGON radio.
WOW, CJR, what a fabulous concert that will be!!!
"Hold the Line" is my favorite, by TOTO---killer piano!!!
Yeah, Neil is criminally overlooked when "experts" are discussing all-time great guitarists. Dude was SEVENTEEN when he started with Santana.
Should be Toto with Journey opening LOL
Neal Shon is probably the most overlooked guitarist there is, except for maybe Prince.
What a voice!!! Steve Perry had a God given talent!!
Mother Father Live in Houston will blow you away!! Steve is a vocal god and the whole band is on point the talent of this band is off the charts and a band that sounds BETTER live is proof of that 😍
Ya'll should definitely react to
"Just The Same Way"
Peace Out 😊✌
Neal Schon is one of the leading starting members of Journey with Gregg Rollie in 1973 after leaving Santana. Neal started playing guitar with Santana at the age of 14 in 1968 in the Bay Area. He didn't become an official member of Santana until 1971 at the age of 17 after Eric Clapton wanted him to join the group Derek And The Dominoes. Steve Perry joined Journey in 1977 and the rest is history. Schon still plays concerts all over the US in 2022 with Journey playing with Toto. Schon with Gregg Rollie still perform Santana also. Their Great Music is timeless!
Neil Schon and Greg Rookie are an awesomematch, try anything off the first 3 albums with Gregg before Steve came in, they are an eye opener in the early days and those albums rock!
Gen xers like me were very lucky to grow up with bands like this! I feel sorry for my kids because stadium packed rock bands are a thing of the past! My kids will never get that experience!
He was The Voice of the 70s. Amazing! If you get the chance watch Eva Cassidy singing Somewhere over the rainbow. She will blow you away.
And Robert Plant!
You ain't kidding, I love Steve but no Led Zeppelin.
1981 live in Houston is best autio!
Agree, this was not the best live version
Mother Father live in Houston 81 demonstrates Steve his emotional vocal talents in giving everything to a song. Early Journey and songs such as Winds of March, Sweet and Simple, Too Late and other gens also show his development and unique vocal stylings. The voice is the voice for a reason. Gifted musician wgi takes his craft seriously. It may look effortless but Steve touring back in the day and recording the way he did will day it took a lot of discipline and care for that voice to perform even when sick and not at his best.
Poor Steve Smith, lol! It must have been the short shorts, those were "in" in 1981.
I’ve seen them in concert at least a dozen times (California in the 70s). They’re amazing!
His voice really is a gift
man you know i really dont like this song on the record but live it suddenly becomes one of my favorite songs ever. the studio version really holds back perrys vocals and the solo really kills live.
YES guys...this is what LIVE music sounded like in the 70's 80's.....if it didn't, you went to obscurity with a 1 hit wonder. God bless you both
Glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s, that stuff will never be topped or ever happen again.
So so great! One of my favorite Jounrney songs. The whole band is soooo good together!
Steve Perry was a friggin' heartthrob back then - with that hair, those tight-a$$ed, high-wasted jeans and the short shirts! LOL The most angelic voice ever with sick tone and amazing range!
Houston 81 version was much better sound quality. LOL LOL drummer is a dude with long hair.
Hey, love your reaction. But correction, the drummer is a male name Steve Smith. Look closely. Steve "The Voice" Perry always delivers and sounds better live than on the studio recordings every time. He never disappoints his audience. You all did miss out, but you can catch up now.
Open Arms! Another love song CLASSIC!!
My cousin was at the Journey concert 1981 in Houston and she said the sound quality was amazing.
One of their best! His voice is phenomenal. 👍👍👍
Love the song but feel studio version would've been a better first listen. Great channel yall. PEACE!!!!!
Love it!!! Journey is my favorite. Do their song Mother, Father, Sister.
Greatest singer in Rock history..NO body at that time could touch perry..
Steve Perry also did some solo work. Please check out "Foolish Heart."
This is a good song, but, I just wish some one would have the guts to play more from their album Infinity, that's the album Steve Perry Made his debut with Journey and they had more hits than "Wheel In The Sky" on that album, actually, all of the songs from the Infinity album are really good songs, just nobody wants to give them a chance. The album was good enough that it got stolen from me twice! Obviously they were hardcore fans, lol.
This live version is fine, but the live from Houston, Steve’s hometown, is awesome! Same song.❤️🤘🏻
Journey is amazing. Love your reaction!
Thanks for circling back to Journey. I know y'all did this in the live stream, but doing it live makes it so much better. When you get a chance, listen to the live version of the Houston concert, the sound quality is so much better. Please do "Send Her My Love" from the Frontiers Album 1983, "The Girl Can't Help It" from the Raised On Radio album in 1986 and "When You Love A Woman" from the Trial By Fire album 1996. Thanks and God Bless.
Live version from HOUSTON 1981 sound quality is much better. This sounds awful.
“When you love a woman” mostly vocals from Steve. Beautiful song
Neal Schon is the lead guitarist...great guitarist! Steve Perry is the Best. For the thousandth time...if you like Steve Perry, listen to his solo song "Fooilsh Heart" (the official video...not a lyric only video...half of the lyric videos have the wrong lyrics. :) It will be goose bump time for Asia again!
I never realized how great a guitar solo was until now.
Steve Perry was sick during this performance and still never missed a note.
Not their most popular songs, but if you really want to hear Steve sang check out "Sweet and Simple" or Mother, Father". Absolutely great!
Brings tears as the memories come
Such rich good talent
Never disappointed ✌️🌸🎶
Thanks for reacting to my favourite ballad
Asia & BJ here's another group that U guys have to react is Genesis - Abacab (Live Invisible Touch Tour 1987) from Wembly Stadium. Go Live n C the Jamboree that Genesis is going to throw down. Trust Me, U guys will not be disappointed.
Ok i see yall jammin some Journey, Ok Journey is Legendary 80s for sure And this song is a 80s babies banger. When you guys get time can you react to ''Seperate Ways'' by Journey Another Classic Banger!!!🎶😎
Ummm, drummer is NOT a female. The disrespect yo.
That is the great Steve Smith behind the drums who is an acclaimed musician before and after journey who is still performing, mostly in the jazz arena.
Hi Asia&BJ. Great,, Try the Live "Foolish Heart" by Mr. Steve Perry.. ♠W.G.
I've been a journey fan since junior high school and they still don't disappoint. Steve Perry is iconic legend 👍
I wish more songs had their guitar solos at the end, that was special
Steve singing Foolish Heart (video) pls. Just Steve, a Mic and a stool. Don't get no better 🎶🎵
Check out all the songs on the 1981 Houston Tour all the songs are really really great
That old audio is terrible, you should try the Houston concert, same song but the quality is way way better.
Y'all need to do reaction foolish heart by Steve Perry
You have to do next from journey the live in houston version of the song "Mother Father", trust me you will shock for steve perry's voice.
Hope Steve Smith (drummer) doesn't see this reaction!
Live in houston texas has a lot better sound. The whole concert was amazing
Steve Perry has an Amazing Voice in my opinion his Best Vocal is the Live version of Mother Father Live in Houston and the
ending of the song is incredible also the studio version was done in one take Still the best concert i have been to I love your Channel
Journey Live in Houston 1981 is more to my liking.
I get such joy in seeing you guys smile hearing him sing.....I enjoyed it so much in my youth, he was easily my favorite, his voice is timeless
Glad you appreciate. You are right, they are all amazing musicians
The drummer isn’t female that’s Steve Smith.
Steve Perry is an incredible singer. But all of Journey is great. Love them
Sound so clean as if they're in the studio...
Journey is legendary!!!! Steve Perry is a Rock n' Roll god!!!!! Journey will be in concert here in Sacramento on April 1, 2022 the day before my birthday!
Love you guys that’s Steve smith on the drums
Oh thank you for video. One of the best bands that sound better live than recorded. Steve Perry was an amazing vocalist. Tragic that hit quit singing back in the 90s. Jon Bon Jovi dubbed him “the Voice”. Amazon actually sells this entire Houston TX concert live. Neal Schon on lead guitar is a prodigy who played first with Carlos Santana starting when he was 14. Put that with Jonathan Cain on piano and his songwriting skills. That was the heartbeat of Journey in the late 70s and 80s. While most were selling their souls to the evils of disco, my college dorm room play Journey. Lol. Also. Notice extended guitar solo and Steve and Jonathan on piano together? That only happens at concerts. Priceless. Oh. Haha. BJ. The drummer is a guy. Steve Smith. So funny. He’s bald now. 🤣😂🤣
Steve Perry has not quit singing. He released a new solo album as recently as 2021.
And, Jonathan Cain didn't join Journey until 1980. Before that Gregg Rolie was their keyboard player. When he left, he suggested they'd ask Cain, from Journey's support band the Babys with John Waite on vocals, to replace him, which they did.
The 1981 houston concert will show you just how perfect of a singer Steve is. pick any song from that show and you will be blown away.
Yeah you need to listen to "Mother,Father" from the "Live in Houston" concert.... it will blow you away! Great reaction as always guys thank you!
Listen to When the Lights Go Out in the City
Steve Perry foolish heart
Steve Perry foolish heart
It’s a spiritual experience listening to Journey, Steve’s voice, Neil’s guitar, Jonathan Caine on piano, the whole band is awesome! Nothing like Journey! I thank god I saw them many times as. Teen! It was truly like being in heaven at their concert!
This whole concert is 🔥. Believe it or not they always sound better live.
Saw Journey three times growing up all I can say is OH MY GOD! Only way to appreciate this band fully is to see them live!
