Yes, the first time I heard this song, I was a little put off by how choppy the music is in the verses. I finally realized the music is "broken" like the family. This is in contrast to the chorus, which is about healing.
The guy on piano is Jonathan Cain. Before he joined Journey, he was in a band called The Babys with John Waite. You should react to "Every Time I Think Of You" if you are ever interested in checking out another great band. Jonathan Cain actually wrote the music for what would become Open Arms while he was a member in The Babys. When he played the melody for John Waite but he didn't think much of the tune. Isn't it amazing how he can sing with so much emotion in his vocals that you do believe he has either been through the storyline or is going through it?! He's a phenominal vocalist. God sure did Bless him. I see in the comments that others have told you what the 7th son is, that Steve is an only child of Portuguese parents, that they divorced when he was 8, that it shook his life, that Steve declared this song to be the toughest song to sing live, so the piano solo at the end gave him time to recoup. Surprised that someone who is usually good with lyrics missed that in the first verse it says "where did she go wrong" and "Lord bless this broken home." Maybe lyrics in the rap world are more literal, but when he says "I'm your seventh son" it's metaphorical, referencing the special powers of the seventh son. he means "I'm the one who can heal this family" if you "have faith, believe."
Thank you so much for your great reaction and analysis of Journey's phenomenal masterpiece "Mother, Father." They're my favourite group and Steve Perry is my favourite artist. His beautiful voice is a gift from God. Steve Perry was an only child born of Portuguese parents, and sadly, they divorced when he was just 7 or 8 years old. He told Dan Rather in an interview that their divorce really affected him and he always felt like it was his fault, even though he was just a child. This song may have some personal meaning to him in that sense. I love everything about this stunning live perfoormannce. Their musicianship is unparalleled and his voice is unmatchable. 😃🎵🎤🎶

His performances are simply athletic and "performative"; they lack depth and soul and deeper meaning. But compare him to true artists, like Steve Perry, he just fails to measure up. Music without soul is just sound. Music with soul is transcendent. So I agree with your comment 100%! Steve Perry, Jonathan Cain (Piano) and Neal Schon (Lead Guitar) wrote this song. Steve Perry helped write almost every Journey song when he was in the band. Love this song. Faithfully was written by Jonathan Cain.
The red piano sits in the R&R Hall of Fame. Jonathan Cain bought it for $12,500 in 1981. Today it goes for $86,000. He said he took it on tour everywhere. Perry also suffered through his parent's divorce saying he felt invisible.
This is again, from the Houston performance of the Escape tour. Many of the videos on Journey DVD’s are from this performance, which is why he is wearing that Flintstones shirt. Steve’s performance at this venue was stellar…it was a great night for him. But he always put everything into his performances.
It's hard to find it now, but this song was written by Neal Schon and his father, along with Jonathon Cain, so it was a very special song for them to record and play live. They wanted Neal's father to be proud so they made sure it was perfect! Also, this is all from the Escape tour, so the Flintstone's shirt was only worn on that tour.
I’ve been listening to Journey since I was young. I’ve always been aware of what a great voice Steve Perry has but I had never heard this song or watched this performance until a few years ago. Your reaction to this is the exact same reaction I had when I first heard this song. Steve Perry is just one of the best male vocalist of all time and he was very underrated at the time.
I’m so glad you did this review. I recommended it several weeks ago & glad it made the cut. You rightfully give Steve Perry a lot of love on these reviews. Journey is just simply a group of immensely talented musicians & they all deserve props for their decades of music. Outside of Steve Perry’s brilliant, unmatched career with Journey, you need to check out a couple of songs someday from his solo albums. HIGHLY 20:46 recommend “She’s Mine” & “Foolish Heart”. Simply more incredible vocal talent from “The Voice”.
Thanks for reacting to this one I knew you'd like it, especially the story line. So the next one you should react to from this live concert is "Who's Crying Now". But if you want to go back to on of their late 70's albums listen to "Feel'in that way". I think you'll like the video. It should be on their channel, but in that video. You'll hear the pianist before Jonathan Cain his name is Greg Rollie. He used to do most of the vocals befor steve came on board. And then you'll hear Steve singing in tandem with him. And you'll hear why Steve is the one and just how unique and talented Steve is.
I'm sooo glad you got to see this ❤❤ check out Wheel in the Sky live in Osaka another great vocal Steve playing around with his voice alongside Neal's guitar ❤❤❤❤
Steve Perry’s album, Traces, has the final song about him as a child after his father left, swinging in the back yard wishing father would come back. Heartbreaking: I dreamed one night you were gone In the yard by the house, blue jays fly All alone, nowhere to hide Wishing you were still here
This is the story of a broken marirage and the affects it has on the family The seventh son is a symbol of the one who went his on way but stills believes the family unit can be saved. The piano solo at the end gives steve a chance to recover. Steve was an only child and his parents divorced when he was only seven years old.. Steve said he thought it was his fault. He also said that this song was the most difficult for him the perform. You would never know it.
Glad you finally got to this incredible live performance by Journey and Steve "The Voice" Perry showing his vocal prowess. This concert was recorded live with no artificial enhancements. What you hear is what they recorded. Numerous bands back in the day, their live performances were always better than the studio/album versions. The band members actually played the instruments on their recording sessions for their albums. That's why their live performances were so good. Add in practicing every day. Also, additional professional session musicians played on album recording of various bands/singers when they were requested and/or needed. The group Toto started out as session musicians, then the formed their own group. These musicians, singers and songwriters were just talented back then and very creative. It was just easy for them to create good solid music. Their music is timeless. You seem to be in big disbelief that this is actually pure talent with no artificial enhancements. Don't take the previous sentence the wrong way, just making a statement. The enhancements did not exist back then. They did have reel to reel tape. LOL! These music artists/singers/songwriters worked hard to produce good solid music. In order to make it in the music industry during that time, you had to have the talent to make it. Continue down the Journey rabbit hole and Steve Perry's solo music. Check out R.E.O. Speedwagon's live performances, you'll be blown away with them to. They have a huge song catalog as well.
Neal Schon was a young guitar prodigy growing up in the Bay Area. As a teenager, he was asked to play with Santana, and greats, including Eric Clapton had jam sessions with Neal when they came through town.
7th son in Norse tradition …the 7th son has the ability to heal … He’s trying to say to his parents that they can heal… it should not end this way ~ he’s trying to say it doesn’t have to end this way we can heal.. Back in the day. I also heard this song was influenced by a kid/Family/friend in his home town that was going through this.
It’s about broken families and as in his own parents divorcing and how he himself was heartbroken. So many of us have gone through our parents divorcing and then years later some of us divorcing as well. Whether it was journey as a whole or Steve by himself, they always have songs that fit the things we go through in life no matter what stage we are at.
I go from chills to tears when he sings. I’m 66 and Steve is my go to when I need to feel strong emotions. I appreciate the comments helping to understand the meaning of this song. I watch videos where Steve shares his journey and so this song makes so much sense to me.
The reason why there are a lot of shots of Steve Perry with the yellow shirt on is because the band traveled non-stop for nearly a year and back then on buses so they had to pack light. Steve Perry loves various types of music including rock and jazz. Neal Schon started out playing guitar with Santana at the age of 17. Jonathan Cain attended the Chicago Conservatory of Music and not only can he play keyboard instruments, but also the guitar. He has published several Christian albums. The drummer Steve Smith is a well known musician that plays, jazz, jazz fusion, and rock.
Voted the greatest live male vocal performance of all time.

Love that you finally got to this gem! The band at the "zenith" of their career with this tour. This was also the first live concert to air on MTV!
Perry always sounds good!!!
I never thought you'd DO this one!!! (haven't watched yet). You will love this (I think). Awesome. My favorite Journey song.
Mr. Steve Perry aka the voice has said this song is the hardest to sing. But you sure wouldn't know!!❤❤
Both of his parents sung and his father was a co- owner of a radio station.
MY FAVORITE JOURNEY SONG OF ALL TIME!! Did I tell you I love this song? Those hiccups - hysterical!!
I feel everything he sings it comes from the heart😊
The father was drinking and threw the pictures broke the glass. First was the mother then the father, sister
💜💜💜💜💜 Steve hits "angel notes" in this song.
Steve Perry’s album, Traces, has the final song about him as a child after his father left, swinging in the back yard wishing father would come back. Heartbreaking:
I dreamed one night you were gone
In the yard by the house, blue jays fly
All alone, nowhere to hide
Wishing you were still here
This is the story of a broken marirage and the affects it has on the family The seventh son is a symbol of the one who went his on way but stills believes the family unit can be saved.
The keyboardist is Johnathan Cain, he wrote Faithfully. Played standing up too. ❤❤❤
The ohhhhhohhhhh part was out of this world, and the ending of song Steve did a microphone dismount, otherwise known as Mr Perry’s mic drop🎤
Steve has described the way he writes a song is like a story for a movie
It’s about broken families and as in his own parents divorcing and how he himself was heartbroken. So many of us have gone through our parents divorcing and then years later some of us divorcing as well. Whether it was journey as a whole or Steve by himself, they always have songs that fit the things we go through in life no matter what stage we are at.
In folklore, a seventh son is believed to have special powers, such as healing, fortune-telling, or dowsing
What is dowsing?
Dowsing is the art of finding water using rods or even sometime sticks. @@terrigaines1812
Journey is one of the greatest bands, and Steve Perry is the best.
Only childl.....his voice, always makes me want to cry!!!! He's SO ADDICTIVE!!!
I have been a Journey fan for many years and I have never heard this song. I love to hear Steve Perry's voice when he sings anything!
Saw this tour. Journey was always amazing. That was my third Journey concert!!😊❤
You did it!!!! Thank you!!!! Love this! Thank you!!!
Been waiting for this, it doesn't get any better ❤
Saw this tour it was amazing. The 80s was a helluva time to be alive.
The Escape Album was my favorite ❤
Omg this never gets old I love this tune ❤ saw Steve Perry in San Antonio back in the day
