Steve Perry, angelic, freak of nature and you would be correct. One of the absolute best and his stage presence was energizing. Neal Schon is a virtuoso on guitar and a freak of nature in his own right. Journey went on to be a huge success as we all know. Nice video showing where it all started. Wheel In The Sky, one of their many great and iconic songs.

Harri, this was the studio cut dubbed over live footage. But if you've never heard Steve Perry sing live, he's one of the best in the biz at delivering a vocal sound remarkably close to the studio cuts. Hello Harri. There was an overabundance, of extremely talented musicians, as well as, vocalist throughout the later part of the 60's, and, into the 70's. I believe, there are several things to remember, when asking why the musical talent was more prevalent during those times, & what set this in motion. The first, was when the Beatles changed the world, by appearing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964, on a Sunday night. Every youngster I knew, was inspired to be a rock & roll star, including, yours truly. The second thing to remember, is there were no video games to monomopolize youngsters time, money, & interest. Those were times when there was a lot less to entertain youngsters, musical groups were very popular, growing more popular every day. In today's world there is an overabundance of youngsters who excel at having hand, eye coordination. Back in the 60's & 70's there was an overabundance of people who excel at shredding their guitar 🎸. That's my theory anyway.

you're right that there was an overabunance of extremely talented musicians from the '60's through the early to mid '80's. for steve perry and neil schone to have been able to stand out amongst all that talent back then shows how good they were. there was also that special chemistry that they had in that band along with their song writing skills that pushed them into that rare group of "super" bands. the lead guitarist (neil schone) initially was with the band "santara"

As we age, we tend to like the familiar stuff. Only Journey has managed to make me love songs I missed years ago because I live in the Caribbean, and we came late to Journey and only played the big 80s hits.

The Great Aynsley Dunbar is the one on drums.
Neil Schon on guitar who with keyboardist Greg Rollie were the with Santana then left to form The Golden Gate Rhythm Section - later renamed - Journey when they got their own record deal.
Greg was the lead vocalist before Steve Perry came onboard, also was the original lead vocalist for Santana until his departure.
    Ross Valory on Bass.
This was the original Journey recording lineup then Steve was added three years later to record their fourth album (this one) and the rest is history. Aynsley left the band after this tour due to "difference of musical direction/opinions".

Sad to see but inevitable for many I'm afraid as we age. Journey is a great band, but especially so with him as the lead singer. The love version of wheel in the sky doesn't short change. Perry used to do a vocal outro with Steve Smith in high octane as their drummer. This is the studio version. Wheel in the sky is not a song co written with Perry. This came from a poem written by bassist Ross Valory's wife. When Perry came in to Journey and their front man, this was their first single played on radio. This is very early Perry and Journey and their sound. Try the live version of wheels in the sky it's a better outro.

He developed a nasty bone disease from over touring, has had to have multiple titanium implants just to keep walking.

While you were busy comparing Steve Perry's aesthetics to Rod Steward's, you missed the ridiculously high note Steve reached. But don't feel bad, it's so inconceivable that most people miss it.

Guitarist Neil Schon started out with Santana at Woodstock. Fantastic player, but whoever convinced him he could do an Afro needs to be seriously examined.

NEIL wasn't in the group quite yet when they played at Woodstock. Gregg Rolie was tho. He joined after Woodstock.

???Of course it's live. I'm thinking this was the Houston concert. As I think about it, it does seem the youth of today do not have live concerts to flick to like we did back then. Albums were even "live" versioms.

Not live, it's the studio version dubbed over a live show. I think it's from Soundstage from PBS in Chicago.
