I recently just discovered noise gate and now I can really boost my microphone volume up without having to worry so much about background noise, I’ve also discovered if you ever have issues with getting your microphone volume up without distorting it, try duplicating the track and copy and pasting the vocal in the the other track, it boosts the volume without sounding too distorted if you adjust the eq to a lower bass
First Pete, thank you so much, for the bang-on advice and help - on numerous critical occasions recently, I have turned to your channel. Now, on compression, I did what your advice was, and was remaining baffled based on my previous experience...then I realised I am so used to Audacity, with it’s clear graphic illustration of what it is doing. When in audacity - pardon me for those who know - you put the compression on, Audacity does the job, and produces the version of the waveform, fully compressed along the entire length or what length you selected. That means my view of compression, is that lovely, much-fattened waveform that transforms what looks like a worn baby-bottle cleaning brush, into what looks like a NEW baby bottle cleaning brush! IE it maxes up the gain on all the bits that were previously not heard despite there not being much going on in their little section. Now, after your stereo tips, and your volume automation tips (mega), I have gone through the over-enthusiastic stereo-ising of everything (!) and reined it right back to a few aspects to give a stereo effect and of course, retaining a central mono for the iphone SE etc out there that only output mono. I finally stopped overpowering the mono, while managing to get a stereo sound, using three tracks per instrument in effect (I chose mono...L...R as my order top to bottom and will stick with that). Anyway the point is, I went the extra step once I realised I was missing that ‘new baby bottle cleaning brush’ image, and FURTHER EXPORTED the track I’d only just done that with, bringing it back in to the self-same song I started with. The compressor and EQ effect of course, had been applied, and I wanted to see them one above the other. IE I brought in the WAV of the cpmpressed/EQ’d etc version, and duplicated the original Wav track, placed the EFFECTed WAV output there, and turned off all the compression etc for that newly-imported compressed version, so the effects of compression and EQ were not added TWICE. So, I got my familiar worn-hairy looking uncompressed waveform on the top track, and right below now, I have the full ‘long-haired’ waveform where it’s over-compressed to hell and back of course (!) as I got far too enthusiastic, and it has lost all the finesse and nuance it had before. However, it’s got that full-volume-all-the-time character that is apparently necessary for a lot of songs if you want them to be played by someone. It’s also now clear, why you feel drawn to extract your songs out usually, to some other DAW, in order to finish the mastering off. However, you are of course correct, it can be done in Garageband iOS from start to finish, and in fact I have learned so much doing it, that was worth it alone. I now know for example, I have no real solid understanding of compression at all. I will ferret around for more info. I now understand, what probably causes those album tracks, where they say ‘album version’ and ‘single version’ to sound the same to me, but actually, I missed the point that the difference is not in the song melody or arrangement, but in the production sometimes alone. Once again, my salutations, you really really got me through this.

Hey there. Thanks so much for your support and kind words. AIFF and WAV both contain 24-bit, 44.1kHz uncompressed audio, so there is really no difference using either. The reason I use WAV is because it is generally more compatible with more software and apps.
Awesome job! Another way to master without having to export and then come back is to add a track with FX button. Do a 5 second recording. Then delete the recording, but keep the FX track. Then use the eq of the FX track. It acts as a master at that point I’ve found.
We must be on the same wavelength here! I recorded a video on this very topic just a few days ago! Change Master Volume Using FX in GarageBand iOS (iPhone & iPad) ruclips.net/video/0Wr3dTPy0RI/видео.html
What a great idea. Thanks. I don’t use that anymore. I have one of those speakers you have. I only got one because I use it just for mono mixing the lower end. The bass is so huge, I don’t find it useful for much else. I think you do need one source that will emulate a very bass heavy place like a club or you risk having a mix that’s way too much on the lower end.
Yes, for sure! I haven't done a video about it specifically, but referencing your mixes on a bunch of different types of speakers and playback devices is always a good idea to pick up on some of the things you need to tweak; especially in the low end!
You can over saturate with too many effects? The biggest issue with final mixes and masters in GarageBand is just having the volume too high which can kick in the auto normalisation.
Nice one! Yeah, I've played with Soundcloud a little and it usually works okay to share from the app. Sometimes I need to use a browser and share that way however.
Pete can you please explain what each plugin and eq does. What I mean is, when you go to compressor for track you see sliders for attack, gain, mix. Can you explain what each slider really does to a track?
Hey there. This video should help out. There’s a video here for pretty much every different plugin and effect, which you can find at my GarageBand FAQ here - studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Hi Pete thanks for another valuable video on mastering I got a question if you can please help there’s another technique you shared about creating a master fader through the fox track and here is another whole procedure of doing mastering which one I should follow really appreciate your help thanks .
Hey Taj. So, yes - the FX trick is cool if all you want to do is adjust your overall volume. However, if you want to add other effects to the whole track (EQ, compression, reverb) then you need to be able to bring the whole mix on to a standard track using a method like this. I hope that makes sense?
Bro, thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing your goodness. Constructive criticism; I though regular iPhone earbuds) feel like the overall sound is a little dry , as in I can’t hear the highs clearly enough and when I experiment with the headphones position in my ears I hear a BIGGER SOUND overall, please try to compare this mix to what I feel like is most similar, Peter Gabriel, you need something here like more samples or a slightly jazzy/fusion style guitar solo even just for 4 bars! Just to brake up the song and give it a little twist as it’s a little predictable sounding. Just speaking as a muso to muso... wish I could do so Roland V-Drum recordings for you also .... the song is great just needs to breathe a little more!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to provide feedback. Yes, it is interesting to go back now and listen to songs from even a year or two ago. There are plenty of things I would do differently; many of them exactly what you have mentioned here. If you listen to some of my more recent songs, I’ve started filling out my idea a lot more and spent more time on the mixing and mastering process. ruclips.net/video/VXtfqDRg3Uk/видео.html

@@PeteJohnsMusic Super, or is it superb (more age-appropriately ;) Watching your vocal input video just now. Still struggling with getting good sound out of my expensive mics, my iPhone mic has been doing double duty so far.
Great video for my arsenal!!! Just a confusion, when you mix, do you make those waveforms even to each other specially for the quiet and loud parts??? And also, do you send you final mix to audioshare first before mastering to final touch???
Hey there. My approach has varied over time. These days I tend to share as a WAV from GarageBand to wherever I'm mastering (sometimes GarageBand itself) - ruclips.net/video/AKPwwGjnN4w/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic woah, i watched this video before, so do you prefer mastering in garageband rather than final touch???? I was having problems because I cant find the right volume for my mastered audio file. When I transfer my file to my phone (music player) to test, it was not so loud, I dont know where I did less or wrong :(
Yep, that’s me. If you want to hear the complete album including this song, head to petejohns.com or just search “Pete Johns” on your favourite streaming platform.
Hey Jordan. Thanks for watching. There’s a setting in iOS under “Settings -> GarageBand” called “Enable iOS effect plug-ins”. Close down GB, enable this and then open again. Sometimes you’ll also need to reboot the iPad/iPhone as well before they will show up. Hope this helps!
Hi Pete, hope youre well. Just a quiry, is there a way to record a bass guitar using the midi? for me to get preset bass like what a midi keyboard can do? I want my bass guitar to sound the preset bass on garageband. Thanks Pete
Quick question. I have merged all tracks together to get the single final track and then taken these steps in this video. What are pros and cons of doing it this way?
Hi Pete, I see that you use iPad, always keeping it poured into the power supply, through the lightning reducer. This fact allows you to produce music more comfortably, but doesn't it risk ruining the iPad battery faster too? thank you.
Modern lithium ion batteries are actually pretty good when it comes to power management so not the problems that older batteries often presented with battery memory and charge cycles. I do take it off the charger and let it go down to about 20% occasionally just to ensure it remembers how to charge. 😎
Hey Jeff. Apple don't make it super simple to make direct contact (that I'm aware of anyway), so not sure sorry. There is a fair bit of banter about it over on the GarageBand Users Facebook group, studiolivetoday.com/gbu, but we are far from official! 🙂
After exporting created tracks as songs, they seem to remain greyed out and inaccessible as whole stereo tracks on my side. Please tell me what I’m doing wrong
Hey there. Just confirming that you are trying to import the stereo file in to GarageBand and now open it with GarageBand? Check out this video for more information on importing. ruclips.net/video/9NwsiCVAh3U/видео.html
Pete. When I mix in my studio on my KRK 5 powered speakers, I have the speaker volume down all the way. My GarageBand track volumes are usually set around 25%. The wave looks good (plenty of head room). This gives me a nice comfortable listening volume. However when I listen on my iPhone, with ear pods (blue tooth) , even with the volume maxed out it’s too quiet. If I turn up the volume on the phone, the next time I listen in the studio it blows me out. Luckily I haven’t blown my speakers (still turned down all the way). Any suggestions? Thanks, Dave
Hey Dave. This is one of the challenges of mobile recording I’m afraid. A decent set of monitor speakers through an interface vs a pair of low impedance headphones directly is always good fro be very different. I tend to use the EQ master track trick to turn up and down between devices like I show in this video - ruclips.net/video/0Wr3dTPy0RI/видео.html
Nice one. Yes, you may have observed a was just a little rushed in this one, so didn’t have time to cover everything. On the iPad I have plenty of room to EQ here but on the iPhone it is definitely something that I use.

Good video and tutorial. Quick question i dont have the AU in the EQ section are these are only on iPad? Just asks me to look on the app store at paid apps. Oh song songs great looking forward to hearing it on itunes
Hey James. Seems a few folks are having his issue so here’s what should help to enable them. There’s a setting in iOS under “Settings -> GarageBand” called “Enable iOS effect plug-ins”. Close down GB, enable this and then open again. Sometimes you’ll also need to reboot the iPad/iPhone as well before they will show up. Hope this helps!
Excellent! I might have to do a quick tip video on this one as I’ve had a few folks asking about his recently. Unfortunately the documentation on these is very light on, but they mirror the AU plug-ins in the Mac version so you can always use tutorials and info from Mac to help understand them.
Hey, Mr. appreciated your help last time🙏🏾. Quick question.. what do I do about the bass and kick peaking once I bounce out wav to master?? I’m confused as to why it’s making my mix louder in some areas.
Hello my friend! Yes; unfortunately GarageBand iOS has a feature where it will “auto normalise” your tracks when you export them. And unfortunately there is no way to turn this off. What I have had success with is really turning down the levels of my tracks to make sure there is a heap of headroom before I export. The other thing that might be useful is my tip to adjust master volume using the FX track which I’ll link below. Best of luck with this - it can be challenging.
Hi there. Unfortunately the iPad 4th gen does not support iOS 11 or 12 which is required for the latest version of GarageBand, and there is no way to install this on older iPads. Take a look at the compatibility chart here to see all models. studiolivetoday.com/ipad
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you! Will the UR12 work on iPad 4 ? I am in doubt either to go for Focusrite iTrack solo or UR12 which one produces the best sound quality ?
Hi there. The sound quality is about the same between the Focusrite And the Steinberg. And yes, the UR12 is fully iOS compatible and class compliant so will work with the iPad 4, though not with the latest version of GarageBand as mentioned above.
This is actually a very good question! I think I started using this process for mastering well before I fully understood how to use the merge function. I’m going to revisit mastering in GarageBand again soon so I will definitely test out the merge function. Cheers for the feedback and for watching. I really appreciate it. 👍
Nice guy with good information but every time I watch a video, I know it’s going to remind me of those joke videos where they never get to the point, and re-explain the same thing differently in anticipation forever
Hi There. What particular part of the song are you referring to? I'm not sure which icon you are asking about so if you can point me to a point in the video where it is visible that might help me out. Cheers!
Ah - gotcha. That is the "monitor" icon. When you record through the audio recorder, you can turn that on to hear the audio played back as you record it, or leave it off if you don't want to hear the track being recorded. It doesn't do much during the mixing process, but if you go the video where I'm recording vocals or guitars, you'll see it being used. ruclips.net/video/_p_o0i3ThPg/видео.html
Great video man. Answers all my questions perfectly. Keep up the good work. Do you know how to make all my tracks the same volume before burning to cd?
Hey there. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. You will want to use some sort of limiter to get all your volume levels the same when mastering and before distributing or burning to a CD. I his can be a little challenging directly from GarageBand but he AU PeakLimiter plugin can work quite well for this.
Hi there. Are you referring to the audio quality on the video? I actually use a separate condenser microphone and output the iPad audio in to my PC’s audio interface, then combine this audio with the video, which helps me get better quality audio.
Yes, I found that too using the built in mic. I use my standard headset with a mic quite often and this improves things, or maybe grab a USB mic like the one in the link below that I recently reviewed. ruclips.net/video/bF9uBA5MpB8/видео.html
I’m trying to follow you here but I’m getting lost. When you add limiter. You tap edit. (I’m still with you up to here) but when you go to “add” I can’t tell where you go. I can’t pull up the AUPeakLimiter. Please help.
Hey there. Sorry for the delay. I wanted to take a look at the video you were referring to and make sure I understood the question. So, it sounds like you may not have the Apple AU effects enabled which is why you can't see them. I think this video might help you get these enabled and then the mastering video will make more sense. See how you go and let me know if you're still having issues. ruclips.net/video/iFgTDZoXj54/видео.html
Hey there Vince. These are Apple’s audio unit plugins that are included in iOS. They have some issues but are fun to play with. Here’s a video that shows how to enable and use them. ruclips.net/video/iFgTDZoXj54/видео.html
Hey there. I'm not quite sure what part your referring to here sorry. It's been a while since I watched this video! If you can let me know some more details I'll try to take a look.
Ah yes. This function is labelled as “merge” in my version of GarageBand and you are quite right that you could use this to mix down the tracks in to one track instead of exporting and re-importing.
Hey pete really enjoy your content. Im trying to master my track using iPhone 7 but couldn’t find the peak limiter. Any other suggestions for me to peak up the gain ? Thanks
Hey there. You can use the standard compressor but it won’t actually stop the signal going on to the red like a limiter does. If you go to your settings app and enable the audio unit iOS plugins you should be able to get the longer and other plugins. My latest video shows how to get to this menu and you can try to adjust from there.

Pete Johns I was wondering if you could do a free audio tune and how to use it unless you have already done it.
So helpful!
Thanks David! Glad you found it useful and thanks for taking the time to comment.
I have never mastered anything ever. I never knew how but you gave me a starting point to learn. Thanks Pete. It does sound really great!
Thanks Jose! Yes, the key is to just try things. You’ll be amazed by the results you can get. Thanks for watching the series and for your support.
Thank you Pete

Brilliant channel
Thanks Alan! Really appreciate you watching and taking the time o comment.
You sound like Paul Carrack ! Gread vid, thanks :)
I do? Hole that’s a good person. 😁
Pete Johns It’s one of my faves. Great voice & pianist (Mike & thé Mechanics, sideman on keys for Eric Clapton)…
Thanks for the contribution!!!
Thank you for watching and for your kind words.
Good song!
Thanks my friend. All my music is here. petejohns.com
Thank you mate!
You’re welcome. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic yes I did!
Is it possible that adding tone and the eq could be saturation to the master ?
You can over saturate with too many effects? The biggest issue with final mixes and masters in GarageBand is just having the volume too high which can kick in the auto normalisation.
Thank you 🔥🔥
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
Another great tutorial, it’ll be good to finally get the chorus out of my head 😂🤣
Haha! You and me both my friend. Been a love/hate relationship with this one! 😊
Great video!!!!
Cheers Granger. Appreciate the kind words.
Thank you man
I had the issue that my songs all have different loudnes levels
No i gotta do this with all my tracks and reupload them on soundcloud
Very welcome. It definitely helps balance out those volumes. ruclips.net/video/AKPwwGjnN4w/видео.html
Hey Pete, if you download the SoundCloud App. You can share immediately from that share screen.
Pete Johns ok thank you!
Pete Johns thanks a lot Pete that really make sense really appreciate your big help my friend God bless you 😊🙏🙏🙏🙏:)
You’re welcome. 👍
Thanks pete
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Releasing songs, is that video ready by now? Did not see a link to it below. Thanks for sharing. I do see these various release sites on your website though. Ingvee.
Hey there. It should be there but a little outdated now. I would use the videos linked here for info in 2021 - studiolivetoday.com/distrokid
When I transfer my file to my phone (music player) to test, it was not so loud, I dont know where I did less or wrong :(
Thanx! I like the song!!! Are you singing there?
Yep, that’s me. If you want to hear the complete album including this song, head to petejohns.com or just search “Pete Johns” on your favourite streaming platform.
Hi Pete, great video, just wondering where did you get all those audio unit extensions as mine is blank when I open it up?
Pete Johns thanks mate
Jordan Clack looking at your current avatar, I would have expected your response to be “Okay.” 😄
Hi Pete, hope youre well. Just a quiry, is there a way to record a bass guitar using the midi? for me to get preset bass like what a midi keyboard can do?
I want my bass guitar to sound the preset bass on garageband. Thanks Pete
Hey there. There is an app called “MIDI Guitar 2” that apparently supports this. I haven’t used it personally but worth a try.
thank you Pete, I’m trying to get a new ipad pro soon. fingers cross its gonna be handy 🤟
Quick question. I have merged all tracks together to get the single final track and then taken these steps in this video. What are pros and cons of doing it this way?
Hey there. It really doesn’t make much difference whether you export or merge.
ruclips.net/video/AKPwwGjnN4w/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks so much!
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok perfect,thanks for answering me 🙏☺️
Looking forward to the au effects being fixed, so settings are saved, instead of lost.
Yes, I’m really not sure why this hasn’t been fixed? Seems like a pretty simple big to squash but perhaps not high on Apple’s list.
Is there a forum somewhere I can pester Apple to get this simple thing fixed? Maybe if enough people bring it to Apple's attention.@@PeteJohnsMusic
Hey Pete, can you tell me how to get a clean microphone? I my case it’s always already with a filter..
Hey there. Check out this video - ruclips.net/video/_b6i6VIHTgg/видео.html
You can use the “clean” setting under “fun” for a completely clean track.
Hey can you do a dancehall vocal plzzzzz❤️❤️❤️❤️
Hey there. Not really my area of expertise sorry!!
remember you can expand the EQ with the two arrows under the gain slider on the EQ
Nice one. Yes, you may have observed a was just a little rushed in this one, so didn’t have time to cover everything. On the iPad I have plenty of room to EQ here but on the iPhone it is definitely something that I use.
I need to listen your music! Where can I?
Hi there. Just search “Pete Johns” on your fave streaming platform or use this link. sng.to/pete-johns

Cheers pete ill give it a go tomorrow hopefully thats it
Hi pete cheers thanks that worked.
Excellent! I might have to do a quick tip video on this one as I’ve had a few folks asking about his recently. Unfortunately the documentation on these is very light on, but they mirror the AU plug-ins in the Mac version so you can always use tutorials and info from Mac to help understand them.
go teacher song sounds good
😎👍
Good luck pete
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Pete.
Hey, Mr. appreciated your help last time🙏🏾.

Pete Johns thanks!
You’re welcome. Hope you can improve your sound. Let me know how you go. 👍
i have iPad 4, somehow I can not upgrade to the newest version of garageBand, do you have any tips or work-around to achieve this ?
And yes, the UR12 is fully iOS compatible and class compliant so will work with the iPad 4, though not with the latest version of GarageBand as mentioned above.
hey buddy why didn't you just merge the files in stead of exporting then does this not comprise any quality??
This is actually a very good question! I think I started using this process for mastering well before I fully understood how to use the merge function.
I’m going to revisit mastering in GarageBand again soon so I will definitely test out the merge function.
Cheers for the feedback and for watching. I really appreciate it. 👍
Nice guy with good information but every time I watch a video, I know it’s going to remind me of those joke videos where they never get to the point, and re-explain the same thing differently in anticipation forever
Watch my more recent videos. This is my wife’s pet peeve too and she’s conditioned me over time to get to the point much sooner!
What the fourth icon on volume section means?
Hi There. What particular part of the song are you referring to? I'm not sure which icon you are asking about so if you can point me to a point in the video where it is visible that might help me out. Cheers!
Pete Johns 0:49 in the volume/mix section. There are 4 icons, what the 2 last before the volume bar means?
Ah - gotcha. That is the "monitor" icon. When you record through the audio recorder, you can turn that on to hear the audio played back as you record it, or leave it off if you don't want to hear the track being recorded. It doesn't do much during the mixing process, but if you go the video where I'm recording vocals or guitars, you'll see it being used. ruclips.net/video/_p_o0i3ThPg/видео.html
It reminds me of The Kinks.
Nice! That can’t be a bad thing. 👍🤟
Thanks for this great tutorial! i have a question, how did you make it to hear your voice and the ipad audio so clear!?
Hi there. Are you referring to the audio quality on the video? I actually use a separate condenser microphone and output the iPad audio in to my PC’s audio interface, then combine this audio with the video, which helps me get better quality audio.
wow thanks, i was using screen record on the ipad but i was gettinh just the "tap sound" of my fingers, think i´ll use a mic too!
thanks!
Yes, I found that too using the built in mic. I use my standard headset with a mic quite often and this improves things, or maybe grab a USB mic like the one in the link below that I recently reviewed.
ruclips.net/video/bF9uBA5MpB8/видео.html
It’s not installed on my system. Is it third party?
They are included in iOS, but not visible by default. Here's how to enable them - ruclips.net/video/iFgTDZoXj54/видео.html
What audio extension is this
Hey there Vince. These are Apple’s audio unit plugins that are included in iOS. They have some issues but are fun to play with. Here’s a video that shows how to enable and use them.
ruclips.net/video/iFgTDZoXj54/видео.html
Can’t you just click left on the track and than click mix instead of export?
Hey there. I'm not quite sure what part your referring to here sorry. It's been a while since I watched this video! If you can let me know some more details I'll try to take a look.
Pete Johns There where you can do automation is also a mix button
Ah yes. This function is labelled as “merge” in my version of GarageBand and you are quite right that you could use this to mix down the tracks in to one track instead of exporting and re-importing.
Pete Johns Okay thank you. Yes I‘m from Austria so I thought it was mix in English 😂
All good! I have friends in other countries and this one always confuses us. I think it also translates as “combine” in other languages!
Here’s the link to the video I mentioned above, and thanks so much for the kind words.
