16:00 shows that big glitch Garage Band has to where it wont replay things sometimes if you try to play it again from the middle of a section. They should really fix that. Notice how at 16:00 you dont hear the Sweepimg Pad at all. Great videos!
Hey there. Yes, it’s actually something that is the case in most DAWs I have used. Because MIDI is just a data point triggering a virtual sound, of the play head doesn’t pass the note, it doesn’t trigger the sound. There’s no way from it to know what the sounds would be at the mid point. Does make it a little frustrating when mixing. What you can do is merge the track in to an audio track if you we ant to hear the playback at all times. ruclips.net/p/PLc8Xg_23Wa56tIxtD1AHcq_Cte5u2wrRd
Love your videos! Quick question: if I automate volume on GarageBand track to -6db and then export as WAV will GarageBand auto normalize that to 0 DB or will it remain at -6DB
It will auto normalise still. But it can help by pulling your overall peaks down. Basically it will simply normalise the loudest sound to 0dB so as long as you have dynamic range in your song you can just turn turn the input in mastering to give yourself more headroom.
A problem I’ve had with mixing is when the song has different dynamic sections ie quiet parts and louder parts. How do you balance the bass guitar volume across these sections? Do you have to use automation?
Hey Richard. I do use automation a lot when I need to significantly vary the volume. It is easier to try to play quieter too but automation can work wonders. I also used compression for more “automated” automation.
I can't thank you enough for your videos. I've just started creating music in garageband and it can be overwhelming for a beginner. You have helped me SO much! Hi Pete, first thank you for your valuable uploads, they are very helpful, I learned from one of your lessons how to merge and export the songs in one master track however the Issue I'm facing is after exporting the track the volume decrease and I think also the sound slightly changes. I tried to increase the volume to max on all the individual tracks before merging them but all I get on the final exported track is just more saturation and distorted sound without a significant volume increase. I'm wondering if you have a fix for this?

Hey there my friend. Have you tried any other standalone mastering apps? I would suggest checking out Final Touch or Grand Finale if you’re still having problems getting your masters to the level you want. Sir i watch every garage band video made by you. They helped me a lot and now i was transformed from a beginer to a skilled person. U helped me a lot. Thank u sir.
I have a problem when importing a multi track midi file into GarageBand for iPad. I want to remix my composition; but all the faders seem to be locked in place, and cannot be moved. I wondered how they can be unlocked? Something similar happens in Logic Pro for MacBook. Though I've found this can be resolved by changing the automation settings on each fader individually. This is rather time consuming when you have lots of tracks: so I wondered whether there's a default setting that would prevent the faders being locked in the first place?
@@PeteJohnsMusic Many thanks! It's a similar fix in Logic Pro; though the UI looks different. It's just a shame there's no way to turn off automation across all tracks simultaneously, rather than having to uncheck each one individually. That can be a pain when I'm importing a midi file with 50+ tracks!
Hi Pete, I'm getting into mixing and mastering my original songs. I wanted to ask you does the volume at the top of the screen important while mixing songs?
Hey there. Not really. I recommend keeping the volume so it’s not hitting the red at all and the yellow too much. This video will help if you’re finding your volume is peaking. ruclips.net/video/ngGA8iz0ncc/видео.html
Hi Pete so enjoy you videos so helpful. I have now wrote my first song I say song very loosely 🤣🤣 2 questions 1 how to save 2 can I burn to disc or stick .If there is a video on this please let me know carry on the great work Regards Steve
Saving? Just exit the project and it is automatically saved. Exporting? Yup - plenty of options for this. I would check out my video about sharing from GarageBand here - ruclips.net/video/C1zyo4IbI5w/видео.html
Checking out and enjoying out all your GarageBand videos as I am having a go at doing stuff on the iPad for thr first time. Just one question though. What mouse are you using and is it very hard to do this without one. Thanks!
I’ve used a few nice over time but settled on this one - ruclips.net/video/_nbZU0eYnQM/видео.html Here’s a video about connecting mice and keyboards - ruclips.net/video/PJCGENM7zj0/видео.html
So unfortunately Logic projects aren’t backwards compatible with GarageBand. The only way to do this would be to export individual stems (each track as a WAV file) then import in to GarageBand.
You are a great teacher. Thank you for what you do. I do turn the playback speed down a bit as I’m not used to your accent, it helps me process your info. !
OK Pete you have probably answered this in a previous video but I'm going to ask anyway. Is there any way to automate a left and right panning back-and-forth in a certain section kind of like Led Zeppelin did on whole lotta love? Also do you know if there is any way that you can produce surround sound effects Like what would be in a movie? Just curious
Hey there. Panning automation? Yes, you can. You need two tracks with the same sound and then to use volume automation to send the sound from the left to the right and back again. Here’s a video showing this - ruclips.net/video/d-YUR1espa4/видео.html Surround sound? Unfortunately not in GarageBand as it only supports stereo audio, not 5.1 surround or other formats. There are some plugins which suggest they create a virtual “depth” pushing the sound further back, but this is just an effect and not actually using more channels.
Thank you so much. I think you are the only one person on RUclips that explains garageband so detailed. I'm sad that didn't find your channel 5 months ago when started to explore this app 😅
Brass can be tricky and depends how it is recorded. You’ll want to ensure that it’s not overloading your mix so you’re usually looking for any frequencies that are sticking out and competing with other instruments.

Great video! I learned a lot. Can you please suggest me the pan settings for two track recording (vocal and acoustic guitar)?..it would be very helpful..
Two track recordings can be tough because there’s not really much you can do besides keep everything up the middle. What I have been doing lately is using the Wider plugin from Infected Mushroom to spread the guitar a little to give some stereo width. ruclips.net/video/PfKrZ8tJB4Y/видео.html

I have recently retired and now i have the time to finish some midi projects . Here is what I have now About 200 gm style 16 track midis I need to do a final mix down from flash drives A rather old midi software on a very old Sony laptop with vista ( embarrassed to admit) from 30 plus years of music writing ( will not connect with keyboard due to driver issues ) plus it just crashes all the time A 11.9 inch second generation iPad Pro with 256 gigs on it… I love it Multitracker software on the iPad. And all the connecting cables. I have a Yamaha Psr -ew410 All the mikes , cables , and multi USB ports needed fo iPad production (camera device and midi cable ) I can purchase cuebase 3. For the iPad but can’t afford a windows based windows 10 computer at this stage . I play guitar , piano and keyboards. Will the current set up of iPad , Yamaha , iPad and midi files work in concert with each other ... as a last comment I have large hands and big fingers that are counter productive for touch screen piano keyboards ... I am spoiled with actual piano keys Here’s what I would like to do ...find a software that would accept gm style midi files Load them into my iPad , edit minor and some major flaws out of them Play them into my ew410 ... and record out of that ... I also have a digital recorder and small mixing board .... it is important I can change the individual sound ( ie piano sound to guitar ect) If you could recommend a software and any settings I have to make the Yamaha ew410 work in concert with my iPad Worse case scenario I could buy a cheap windows 10 based laptop and software if I have to but I have a 256 gig iPad Pro 12.9 inch second generation that I would really like to use Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Pete! i love your channel. i’m learning tonnes of stuff but argghh, why is the red record button always enabled on one track? i can’t turn them all off so that i can mix without accidentally recording over a section. I’ve got a live drum kit recorded on 5 tracks. Is there some kind of mix mode vs record mode that this super-beginner doesn’t know about yet? I’m asking you because i can’t find the answer anywhere... thanks for all your great work!
Hmmmm….. so I don’t think there is a way to disable the track selected having redoes enabled, which I know is frustrating. I must admit that I didn’t notice this these days so it will likely get easier for you over time. Check out my GarageBand FAQ for more tips and tricks. studiolivetoday.com/garageband

It really depends on each individual song and how loud parts were recorded. Might not need any reduction at all on some tracks. Others I’ll drop by 10 or even 15 dB.
Pete. How can I stay in "arrange" window while recording? It always opens the instrument window. Read in a FB group that someone suggested to activate recording on two tracks because you recommended it. Tried it. Still opens one of the two tracks instrument window. Been looking for your tutorial on this topic but couldn't find it. Thank you! By the way... heard your spy song... very good song and very funny!

Hey there my friend. So you’re looking to import the audio of a video in to GarageBan then add tracks? I haven’t done anything like this but it sounds interesting!!
Hey there my friend. Yes, using a mouse can really help out. Unfortunately there is no way to use any sort of control surface with GarageBand at this point in time.

You’re welcome my friend. Yes, it really is just about trial and error. Keep practicing and your songs will keep improving. I hope you enjoy the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Sir i watch every garage band video made by you. They helped me a lot and now i was transformed from a beginer to a skilled person. U helped me a lot. Thank u sir.
Thank you Ravi. I’m so glad to hear that my videos are helping my friend. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
God bless you for the greatest information bestowed unto me🙏
Nice!!! Glad to help.
you are the best garage band youtube channel! you've helped so much thank you!
Awesome! Very glad to hear. Thanks for your kind words.
do u have a video on how to mix ur voice ? and i'm sorry for my English
Hi there. Yes, o have with it e a few vocal mixing videos. I would start with this one - ruclips.net/video/ccn6hzAwIe8/видео.html
Hey there. This is automation. And you can fix it like this - ruclips.net/video/4VbIYR1hVcU/видео.htmlsi=VeEPHNY1GZD1evHs
Please do not listen whilst driving or operating machinery.
Always good advice!
You play roblox cause in one of the videos you went to app store and i saw roblox was download it
My kids do mostly but sometimes they manage to rope me in to okaying too. 😎
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you so much!
Hi Pete so enjoy you videos so helpful. I have now wrote my first song I say song very loosely 🤣🤣 2 questions 1 how to save 2 can I burn to disc or stick .If there is a video on this please let me know carry on the great work
Regards
Steve
Saving? Just exit the project and it is automatically saved. Exporting? Yup - plenty of options for this. I would check out my video about sharing from GarageBand here - ruclips.net/video/C1zyo4IbI5w/видео.html
I learned more than I was expecting to from this 😮
So glad to hear!
Man your videos are amazing, so much thought for the viewer.. Great help!
Thanks Ben. Really appreciate the kind words my friend. 🙏
Should vocals be louder than the instruments in a song?
Sometimes. Depends on the song and the style of music. Check out the mixing videos here on the channel.
if i import an mp3-download from youtube, is the mixing progress the same (mixing with vocals)?
or is it only possible with the garageband sounds?
Yup, pretty much the same so try imported files. Here’s a video showing how - ruclips.net/video/PBTz8J5LxeA/видео.html
thank you once again Pete, literally a lifesaver
🤘😎
Great video. And you explained a lot of tough concepts really well. Learnt some tips I'll use in my future projects.
Cheers my friend. Glad to hear you found it useful. 👍
Checking out and enjoying out all your GarageBand videos as I am having a go at doing stuff on the iPad for thr first time. Just one question though. What mouse are you using and is it very hard to do this without one. Thanks!
I’ve used a few nice over time but settled on this one - ruclips.net/video/_nbZU0eYnQM/видео.html
Here’s a video about connecting mice and keyboards - ruclips.net/video/PJCGENM7zj0/видео.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Will do that thanks :)
Hi pete
My preferred workflow would be to edit in logic and mix in garageband,
Is that possible?
So unfortunately Logic projects aren’t backwards compatible with GarageBand. The only way to do this would be to export individual stems (each track as a WAV file) then import in to GarageBand.
@@PeteJohnsMusic
I think you can just export midi and drag it to gb
Am I able to download karaoke tracks from RUclips to garage band and then record my vocal on different track?
Yes, check out this video for details - ruclips.net/video/XXplSV3GhrA/видео.html
You are a great teacher. Thank you for what you do. I do turn the playback speed down a bit as I’m not used to your accent, it helps me process your info. !
Nice one! Yes, I've slowed things down a little over time so hopefully you're finding me easier to understand these days.
Here’s a video showing this - ruclips.net/video/d-YUR1espa4/видео.html
Surround sound? Unfortunately not in GarageBand as it only supports stereo audio, not 5.1 surround or other formats. There are some plugins which suggest they create a virtual “depth” pushing the sound further back, but this is just an effect and not actually using more channels.
@@PeteJohnsMusic 0h ok. Thank you so much
Can you have any peaking instruments?
Each individual instruments peaking aren’t generally a problem as long as they are virtual instruments. (MIDI tracks)
Hey Pete! Nice iPad Pro that you recently purchased. Nice to see you still going strong with your channel. Awesome.
Jose! Always good to hear from you my friend. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you so much. I think you are the only one person on RUclips that explains garageband so detailed. I'm sad that didn't find your channel 5 months ago when started to explore this app 😅
Well glad you found me my friend!! ruclips.net/p/PLc8Xg_23Wa55IUY55fNYokmyKf9GN1EH3
Keep going this series sir! We want more about mixing and vocal effects
Thanks alot
You’ll be happy to know that I have an “intermediate” and “expert” mixing video in the works. 👍
You are amazing! I am new to singing and song writing and your videos are extremely helpful! I cannot believe these videos are free! God bless you! 🙂
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Do you have any suggestions for improving trombone EQ and balancing the mix equally??
Brass can be tricky and depends how it is recorded. You’ll want to ensure that it’s not overloading your mix so you’re usually looking for any frequencies that are sticking out and competing with other instruments.
This guy needs to be sponsored by Apple
Haha! They wouldn’t like everything I have to say about them. But they have been very helpful as I’ve progressed.
What’s your tipple? I want to send you a bottle you have taught me so much.

Literally most helpful video out there, thanks !!
Awesome! Very glad to hear my friend. Happy New Year.

Here is what I have now
About 200 gm style 16 track midis I need to do a final mix down from flash drives
A rather old midi software on a very old Sony laptop with vista ( embarrassed to admit) from 30 plus years of music writing ( will not connect with keyboard due to driver issues ) plus it just crashes all the time
A 11.9 inch second generation iPad Pro with 256 gigs on it… I love it
Multitracker software on the iPad. And all the connecting cables.
I have a Yamaha Psr -ew410
All the mikes , cables , and multi USB ports needed fo iPad production (camera device and midi cable )
I can purchase cuebase 3.
I am spoiled with actual piano keys
Here’s what I would like to do ...find a software that would accept gm style midi files
Load them into my iPad , edit minor and some major flaws out of them
Play them into my ew410 ... and record out of that ... I also have a digital recorder and small mixing board .... it is important I can change the individual sound ( ie piano sound to guitar ect)
If you could recommend a software and any settings I have to make the Yamaha ew410 work in concert with my iPad
Worse case scenario I could buy a cheap windows 10 based laptop and software if I have to but I have a 256 gig iPad Pro 12.9 inch second generation that I would really like to use
Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Pete! i love your channel. i’m learning tonnes of stuff but argghh, why is the red record button always enabled on one track? i can’t turn them all off so that i can mix without accidentally recording over a section.

I’m having a problem I don’t know how to edit in fx.
Bummer! FX can't really be edited, unelss you're talking about effects (plugins)? This video shows how to use plugins effectively - ruclips.net/video/8954811TrLQ/видео.html. And this one covers the FX function - ruclips.net/video/Bg0FHdACzRs/видео.html

Thanks my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven’t already. 👍
How low does the volume have to be? so when it comes to normalization, it sounds good
It really depends on each individual song and how loud parts were recorded. Might not need any reduction at all on some tracks. Others I’ll drop by 10 or even 15 dB.
Excellent video Pete on the basics of mixing in GarageBand. I'll go onto the plug-ins video that you linked in this video here😇🎶 thank you
Nice one. Hope you find my GarageBand tutorials useful.

I basically only make music with GarageBand, this video is always my go to for basic mix set ups 👌🤙🏻thanks man
Awesome!! Glad to hear it my friend.
Thanks for the kind words about the spy song. 😊
You’ll need a multi-channel audio interface to get this done. This video is a good place to start. ruclips.net/video/eRh8EC4gCas/видео.html
Coming back to mix the next song for my album, you’re a life saver Pete!
Maybe how tk mix loops as well could be helpful ;)
🤘😎
Hi Pete, thanks so much for all theses videos, I hope you are thriving! I have a question, it might be an idea for a video or you might have already covered it. I'm new to ipad, just got the new pro. Is it possible to make a new video and then edit it , add tracks in garage band?
Hey there my friend. So you’re looking to import the audio of a video in to GarageBan then add tracks? I haven’t done anything like this but it sounds interesting!!
Excellent! Those finished volumes sure seem low. The cymbals don’t register at all. You’re saying those should be good to go for a final mix down?
Yeah, listening back to the final mix I think I went too low on some of those tracks. Not quite sure what happened there!
Thanks a lot! it was very helpful..

Hey, you mix with a mouse, right? Do you know if it's still impossible to use something such as the Akai Midimix? Or anything else? Thanks!
Hey there my friend. Yes, using a mouse can really help out. Unfortunately there is no way to use any sort of control surface with GarageBand at this point in time.
Hello :) Thank you for the quick answer, keep making amazing videos and take care of yourself :)
Pete Ive been doing quite a bit of work with GarageBand for Church due to the current situation we find ourselves in. I’m Playing most of the instruments and utilise a couple of the Virtual instruments - The vocalists send me their independent tracks and I attempt to mix it all in - But have never had a true understanding of the true power of GarageBand and how to exploit all of the Tools - I’ve just spent the last 2 hrs binging on your content and What a treat - Thanks for the all the Tips and Keep up the Great Work - 👍😀
