Thought I’d let you know that I found a free soft clipper plugin for iOS called BlindFoldEQ, it’s really 🔥 you should definitely check it out possibly do a video on it if you haven’t already done.
Wow, I had no idea I had all those plugins, let alone a limiter, on GarageBand for my iPad. Thank you for making this series of videos for GarageBand for iOS!
You’re very welcome my friend. I hope you get value from the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing. 👍
Always find myself coming back to this video, so helpful 👍
Glad to hear it. 🙏

Woah woah woah woah! I'm an android user so you watch it buddy! (This is still a hilarious comment 😄😄)

Haha! You folks rock. 🤘
I am still a little flabbergasted bu the fact that there are still people who spend their time finding videos about things they don’t like so they have something to dislike and post a negative comment about.

Ok so mastering is just like turning up the volume but not letting it crackle. Huh.
Pretty much! There’s a lot more that you can do with it, but limiting is definitely the most useful and common thing.
Hey Pete,
Here's a quick tip. When you're trying to export/share the file, tap on "Mac". It will save the file automatically to the File Transfer folder in Garageband.
Sam Ogbonda ohhhhh..... yeah, great tip! I hadn’t tested that since the new update but makes sense that it send it there. 👍

You’re welcome. It’s definitely worth playing with. 👍
Hi Pete - thanks for your feedback. Now that I can operate Final Touch, I feel like a rocket scientist. Final Touch really does enhance a final mix to a 'radio ready' quality sounding recording. Just in passing (regarding no master volume on Garage Band for iPad), what I found that works rather well is to push FX button, then visual EQ while your song is playing. Then lower the gain on the right of the screen until the yellow pulses in the volume switch at the top of the screen disappears so that only the green pulses remain. Do this for all the yellow peaks throughout the entire song. Then leave FX and return to the actual song. You will see only green pulses in the volume switch at the top of the screen. You can now raise the volume of this switch as high as possible and there won't be any yellow pulses, only the green pulses will appear (at any volume). Once again, thank you for your series of videos, they have been indispensable to my learning how to use Garage Band and Final Touch. Best wishes - Patrick.
Very nice tips here Patrick!! It can be challenging to manage volume when it comes to GarageBand iOS. 👍
An excellent demonstration of limiting versus normalisation. Thanks Pete!
I've been trying to use Grand Finale on some of my final mixes. But no matter what I do, I always seem to get a sausage-like waveform when using the presets. Of course, they also often sound good, but they are very compressed and all dynamics are squeezed out. I need to find a way to raise the overall volume without losing the dynamic range completely. Maybe I've just seen how........🤔?
Yes, using a simple limiting approach like this is often best if you already have a mix that you like. I agree that whole Grand Finale is good, it can be a little aggressive. I often need to turn down the input gain quite a bit to retain any dynamic range.
Instead of AudioShare you can use iOS VoiceMemo, import the WAV file, then "Edit", then you can visualise approximately the same thing. Not as convenient as AudioShare, but that's an option :)
Yup good call. Voice Record 7 is another excellent option.
This was confusing for me even when im looking at the steps im just lost in confusion
Im not good at mastering I’ve been trying for the longest to get quality sound i make music on soundcloud i get alot of love but people always say you have the lyrics Dizzy but the quality is garbo
and i need that quality sound to get the most out of my songs awesome video im just not good at it

Sounds like you have imported a single mono file in to a stereo track? You might need to mix down in to mono or joint stereo. Something like this might help.

@@PeteJohnsMusic I can't wait to put some of this into practice! I literally just plugged my new focusrite into my new iPad pro and recorded my first thing yesterday (probably a bit of a stretch to call it a song!)
Can't wait to get into it!
So that is what mastering is... I am going to try that right now! 🙏🏻😎
A very basic form of mastering but yeah, it doesn’t need to be super complicated to be effective. 👍
How many DB is ideal for taking away from a mix before mastering it?
It depends on the type of music and how you’ll be mastering it. You generally want at least 5-10dB of headroom. (Below 0dB)
Hi Pete, is this the longer version of mastering verses the “merge” function way, that you shared in another of your later vids?
I believe so? If you've watched the more recent ones, you've seen these methods I'd say.
Thanks Pete! Trying to keep it simple! :) 🎵
Is there a soft clipper plugin I can get for GB iOS ? If not is there a work around or what would you recommend?
Not one that I’ve used personally but bound to be. In fact I believe there’s something in the MixBox app for that.

Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m thinking the new 4 pockets Multi Track auv 3 effect would be a workaround to getting a mixdown out of GB and avoiding the auto-normalization. 🤔
Ooh? Good call! I haven’t even downloaded it yet but hearing good things and planning to check it out soon. 👍
I noticed after I had done my mixing and sent the audio to audio share before mastering that parts of the audio peak at 0db. What do you suggest?

Yes. It's a good idea to generally do at least some mastering to ensure your tracks are at a competitive volume. There's easy and free options like BandLab - ruclips.net/video/msAnDa-BmJA/видео.html

Turn that phase out of the mix a little !
😊
Hi John it’s me again lol. I mixed & mastered my first track. Then I compared before & after like you did in AudioShare. I noticed AudioShare has a Normalize option in Tools. Should we use this after mastering or don’t use it? Thanks again.
Hey there. Your master should be hitting up to 0dB anyway so you won’t need to normalise. 👍
@@PeteJohnsMusic ok thx for all your help. When I did the master I dropped the visual eq down to -5 like you did. When I did the master I did it on 6 db’s. It sounds so much better than just a mixed track. You’ve taught me a lot in 3 days 😄 You’ll be hearing from me in the future lol. Thx again & Merry Christmas.
Is there the same reason to import the WAV file to the same project file instead of a new one?
With a new project, you would end up with a less heavy file. I don't see what is the benefit to have it in the same project file, as it the WAV track won't update anyway if you change the other tracks.
Thank you for your videos. This all is totally new for me. I have a lot of experience with graphic and 3D software. Learning this, so I can help my SO to record her songs. )
Yeah it’s more of a convenience thing so you can make changes and re-import. And all your files are in one project. But no other practical benefits.
hi john. why didn't you do anything when you sent the song to audio share program. you didn't normalize it in audio share program, then you sent the song back to garageband. So why did we use the audio share program? I couldn't understand. Can you explain please?
It’s been a while since I made this video but I was probably just showing the difference it makes by viewing the waveform?
Is a professional metering plugin available for iOS/iPad? I have not been able to find one (something like the free TBProAudio mvMeter2 which unfortunately has no iOS version).
Looking specifically for a LUFS meter for GarageBand iOS/iPad. YouLean LM Light is free and will at least display LUFS readings. You have to upgrade to Pro to see graphs and access the online streaming presets. Lifetime access to Pro version is currently $19.99 which unless I can find something comparable I will probably do the upgrade 9although the free light version is probably enough for my purposes for now).
I would recommend exporting to something like Final Touch which has much better metering. ruclips.net/p/PLc8Xg_23Wa576LHjLmYHbYtuxAObdbiBh
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks Peter, yes I’m using the metering on Final Touch Maximizer, but it doesn’t show LUFS. For now I’ll keep using Youlean for that
Well my first attempt is more blue than black haha but it doesn’t seem to distort. Not much headroom to change anything
👍
Do we turn the the visuals EQ back on? Once doe with the final pet of master? Cu I saw you put it down 5 but then turned off the visuals eq effects
It depends on the volume of the song so will take some trial and error.
@@PeteJohnsMusic yes I was able to figure it out. Thank you for the help. This definitely will have a big update on my music
Where did the file go after you asked for it as a wave
Not sure what part you’re referring to sorry? Maybe ask over at the Create Record Release Facebook group at createrecordreleaae.com, or the Discord group here - studiolivetoday.com/discord.
How come when I did this it shortened my track? Plz help !
That’s odd? Maybe ask over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group studiolivetoday.com/gbu
@@PeteJohnsMusic I did it again after I lengthened the track and this time it didn’t shortened it. I did all your settings but just left the output at 5 umm I feel like it slightly sounds better but I think I hear a little bit of clipping. When you set the output in the limiter and you could see the blue bar moving, does that mean it’s clipping or only when the bar goes more than halfway because mine was definitely half and if it helps I write rap beats.
Hi Pete I m often getting optimising performance issue is that it affect the track performance?

Hey Pete any idea why my phone will simply not allow me to select the wave file once it is exported into my files? The file just appears as a dimmer color to indicate that I can’t really do anything with it and I’m oh so frustrated to say the least
Hey there. This video might help explain things.
So when I’m content with a master track.. I’m just a little confused.. maybe I missed it in the video. Been pausing and going back and forth in the video. What do you do with the imported wav file? Do you leave it on with the other tracks, to create a dubbing effect? Is that the right word? I’m just lost at where the track becomes a complete song? Do I export the tracks and wave file together(not on solo), as a song? I’ve got a bunch of tacks that I thought were finished(only because none of my tacks were peaking.. I found out about the peak limiter through this video, and dropping to -0.5db like you mentioned.. and when do I turn off the FX +0.5db for the track when exporting as a song? Does all that I’m asking about even matter? Lol
So I’m finding it a little hard to follow your question sorry. I have a heap of other videos showing this and similar processes so I’d recommend watching a few more in this playlist.

Hi Pete - it's been a while...hope you're doing well! I have another question regarding mastering. Have you ever mastered a project that only had one instrument? ie, if you were to release a solo piano recording, would you still go through the process of exporting/importing the recording as a WAV and then applying the peak limiter to it? Or could you skip those additional steps and simply add the limiter as a plug-in directly to the piano track? Would you still use your FX "hack" and reduce the "master" volume by 5dB? Or could you simply reduce its level with the volume slider on the left? In my scenario, I am simply using the internal classical grand piano sound in GB and use the online Loudness Penalty Analyzer when I'm done. If I don't go through any of your mastering steps, I find that my track will be raised by 8-12 dB by the various streaming services. If I master it, I get a better result in the penalty analyzer, but I find the piano sounds a bit too "brash". How can I make the piano sound "big", but not be right in your face? I use reverb, but still can't seem to get it to sound right. :( Apologies for another long-winded comment, but would love to hear your take on this. Thank you!
Hey Paul. Great question! First up, full disclosure, this isn’t something I have a lot of experience with.
In short, the limitation you’re going to get with a solo piano is that it will be a little low on overall gain which is why mastering will help to lift the overall average volume level BUT has the downside of reducing some of the dynamic range.
What I’ve done in the past is some very light limiting. Really just normalising to ensure the volume is brought up to the 0dB level at its peaks. If you limit or compress too much you’ll lose your dynamic range and it will sounds too boomy and overloaded. It’s a balancing act for sure.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for such a quick reply! To clarify.. when you say "just normalising", are you referring to GB's auto-normalise function (ie, you wouldn't use your FX hack in this instance to just let GB render the track louder)?
This video is a blessing, thank you sooo much!

Thanks my friend. More GarageBand info here. studiolivetoday.com/garageband
Hello again! I had watched your other video on mastering. Interesting that in this one, you import your wave file as a different track in your original GB session! As an added bonus, you can probably use the solo/mute button to A/B the original and the mastered versions without having to jump around. I wanted to ask about Apple's auto-normalization. You explained the nuances between simply raising the volume vs Apple's auto-normalization vs raising the volume via the limiter, but do you think that Apple's auto-normalization was intended to essentially help you avoid mastering? Also, when you share your mastered file in GB, does it not get auto-normalized again by Apple to create the new wav file? Cheers.
Hey Paul. Yep, there are a lot of nuances to consider here related to mastering and normalising. The volume move is to basically reduce the number of peaks and overall level so you can then turn down the volume and add the limiter. It’s a bit of a hack but creates good results.

Hi Pete, here you have exported the mix as a wav file and then opened it as new .. the way I do it is I merge all the tracks and it automatically creates a single track in a new project. Is there a difference ? Is exporting as a wav is the better way of doing it ?
Hey there. So yes, I have done that before and arguably it is actually better because you are not going through GarageBand’s auto-normalisation process twice by keeping it in the project like that.
Might be a good future video to show this method as well?

I’m on iPhone XR and when I hit ICloud Drive ‘Downloads’ doesn’t pop up as an option. The only thing that does pop up is ‘GarageBand file transfer’. Am I missing a step before this?
Cristian Casarrubias hey there. You don’t need to use the Downloads folder - it just happened to be where I was storing this. You can use any folder you like. The “Downloads” folder will be created the first time use the new download manager in Safari to download a file.

Pete Johns I have another question for you. I’m on IPhone XR and am currently in the process of releasing a single through Distrokid. I tried exporting the file for the track on the Distrokid website but it apparently doesn’t allow me to do it straight off my iPhone. Is there any way for me to export the track (GarageBand wav file) to a google chrome book (laptop).
Yes, DistroKid sadly doesn’t like you uploading using a mobile browser so it is best to send it to Windows or Mac.
If you have iTunes installed you can sync your phone and use iTunes File Sharing to transfer files.
The quicker (and easier in my opinion) is to use WiFi. I use the AudioShare app to transfer files and it works really well. It costs a couple of dollars but is a seriously useful app and well worth the investment.

Yep, you sure can. You just need a 3.5mm stereo to 2 x TRS mono cable to split out the stereo signal then just plug them in to the UR22mkII, set up two tracks and you’re good to go.
Here’s a link to one that I’ve used before for this. You can pick up cheaper ones but you can get what you pay for sometimes with cables, especially super cheap ones - amzn.to/2WLIQJE
