This was so helpful. The quality, time, and effort put in the entire tutorial was definitely not what I expected to come across through a simple quick search. I describe myself as a "flavoured newbie" because I've been playing around with GarageBand the past couple of years, like a little kid out on the loose in a toy store, clicking and experimenting with all buttons my eyes landed on, clearly not knowing what the heck I was doing and for whatever purpose lol. I thought maybe it was about time I try to gain, in the least, some understanding on those buttons. Anyway, the world of art and music doesn't deserve you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm sure future artists who will look into exploring their creativities someday will appreciate this so much when their times come... TO THOSE OF YOU WATCHING THIS TUTORIAL, give Charles's works of art a listen! His song, Nothing But The Glory, hit me hard haha
I'm a musician who writes songs but producing just makes my brain go to mush. I will be watching this video, it just intimidates me a bit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
specially the mastering part of it..inspiration killer lol. Not sure if that video teaches that yet, as Im still watching this gradually, but learning this A to Z would be motivating to write even more songs eventually
Same. I’m a simple man. I write compositions with wood/strings and write lyrics with wood and paper. lol. Can’t say I find a lot of joy in it but it’s needed so I’ve been trying to cram it in so it becomes second nature. I usually go for the most clean and simplistic sound.
I wanted to produce music my whole life so after watching this video I'm incredibly motivated to get started. Thanks Charles for taking your time and going through everything super slow!
I've watched the whole 1:53:21 minutes and the fact that you are taking the time ánd effort to explain all of this in this amount of time, says soooo much about you as a person/artist/producer etc. It helped me so much to guide me through this process. I've seen a lot of video's explaining a lot of things, but NONE of them as accurate and gentle as in this video. So thank you for creating this wonderful video and helping a lot of people! I've subscribed on your channel and put a thumbs up, but it actually deserves much more. Bless!
Funny thing is I have done about 30 songs on Spotify using Garageband to record my guitars, bass, and Band In a Box for the rest, and checking out this tutorial now. And still learning a lot since I haven't done much midi before, just recording analoge playing. Very good video!
Not only am I grateful for your video, but I have to say, as a fellow educator I am really impressed by how accurately and thoroughly you anticipate your student audience. Little things, like telling us what settings we don’t need to worry about and things like that. Amazing.
As a guitarist for about 30 years, I've always wanted to get into home recording. Today I finally had the chance to buy a Mac and it will be delivered tomorrow. I've only heard of GarageBand and wanted to get an idea of how to use it. This tutorial is the first and only one I've checked out and I must say it's incredibly well done. I haven't even received it yet and now I feel like I know how to use and navigate it already. Thanks for the great tutorial, I can't wait to get started!
Hi Charles, great video! I am recording using a mic, and can hear the audio recording on garageband, but there is no soundwave. How do I fix this? Thanks!
Hey brother Charles, Damini here from India . Thank you so much for explaining all this in detail . Well I am song writer, composer and singer. I compose my all songs on tanpura only. This tutorial is so thoughtful and detailed. It's not only about using Garageband but also basic mixing and composition. How you managed to communicate all that in such a harmonious manner is simply amazing. I wish you much success on RUclips. You very much deserve it.
This is a beautiful delivered and extremely useful tutorial. The best I have seen for Garage Band so far. I am through the first hour and 11 minutes and have learnt a lot, especially about MIDI and software instruments. Thank you, Charles!
Just got a MIDI and opened GarageBand for the first time yesterday. I was completely lost. I eventually found your perfect tutorial. THANK YOU! your presentation was clear and covered the basics without loosing me in the details. Now I'm ready to start experimenting. This is going to be fun.
That’s awesome Dankers. Very happy to hear that. You might be interested in checking out my GarageBand For Beginners course. Might be right up your alley.
There are so many Beginner tutorials out there and only a handful of people that have a gift for teaching. You are such a person. My request is for you to make an Advanced user version. Are you up for the challenge? ;)
I actually had GarageBand lessons at my local Apple Store when I was given my first ever computer and I got absolutely nowhere. That was two years ago. I found your video shortly afterwards and I have been using it ever since as my sole reference when making recordings with this app. The time and care with which you put this together is truly outstanding. Thank you so much.
Dude, way to take the lot of cry-babying comments from the previous video in stride and go above & beyond with the feedback! I give you a standing ovation.
It's all about making it clear from the title who the intended audience is. Great that he did both: one for people with recording experience and one without.
This was a pure joy to watch. Adding your own vocals was a brilliant move and made the video all the more endearing and inspiring to watch. Hard to believe the video is almost 2 hrs long as it felt like barely 30 minutes and made me go, "wait, is it over already?" This is a gift and a gem of an instructional video! Thank you so much, and all the best to you.
yesterday I was on a car journey back from france with my family. I downloaded garageband because I wanted to put my foot in the door of music production, as my school doesn't do music tech. I made a beat (which yes, was flawed, busy and didn't have bass drum on the first beat, but I thought it was pretty good for a first attempt) and showed to my older brother, an A-level music student who got a 9 in music on his GCSEs, the highest grade possible. i showed it to him, and he said it was garbage. now I didn't want to hear that, but I needed to, and it prompted me to find this. thank you for making such a great tutorial
Being able to give information in way that anyone can understand is a gift. Most of the so called pundits on RUclips suck at it. They spend so much time trying to show everyone how slick they are, that they forget to teach. Charles Cleyn excels in giving anyone who is interested in learning Garage Band basics a clear, concise, and detailed format from which to do so with no BS. Bravo
Hello, Charles. I really enjoyed your teaching style. Calm voice, excellent details and depth, of course patience. I am not a novice, still I learned a bunch of new stuff from you. Thank you. Kauser
This video is a relief. I’ve been playing music for almost thirty years and I may be the only one of my peers who has never gotten my head around recording. So now I want to take control and record songs as I write them but I’m completely unaccustomed to DAW’s. I write mainly acoustic music so I thought it’d be as easy as point the mic at my guitar, record it, upload it and boom. But I was way off. My room sounds bad, or my mic placement, or my guitar (or the strings??), or maybe all of the above. Either way, I realized that despite my years of experience playing music, I know nothing about recording it.
This was awesome! I have played around with GarageBand for years, but never went through a tutorial that explained things so clearly. Now I feel MUCH more confident and productive in the GB environment and plan to use it MUCH more often. Thank you Charles!
Thank you Charles! I am a beginner and want to help my daughter who is a singer/songwriter produce her own music. You were easy to follow and had a calm and steady voice. I also liked that you are a very good teacher and the videos pace was perfect for me. I liked that every minute I was learning (all value and no fluff) meaning I did not get bored or frustrated because you left your ego out of it and just kept in the education and value throughout the video. I really feel I have a basic understanding and can now explore GarageBand on my MacBook Pro. I have avoided it in the past due to complete ignorance. Thank you so much for giving up some of your knowledge and valuable time to help others. After my daughter, Sophia Lund, and I produce some original music... I will pass it on to you:) You are amazing! In Gratitude! Terri L.
May opportunities and kindness return to you manifold! I'm keen to find out more about mixing and production and your video came up! I've yet to complete the entire tutorial but I had to pause it to say thank you! This was obviously so much effort, with the editing, time stamps and all. Thank you so so much!
I used GB a few years ago to "produce" some guitar tracks. It was a painful process as a beginner because I felt almost completely lost all the way throuh and just by shear luck I was able to complete the task. I´ve been gathering the courage to use GB to create some guitar grooves I´ve been playing for a while and I think taht your tutorial has given me the final push to reconnect with GB. The "drummer" features of GB is what makes me to stick to this DAW. As mainly a guitar player I find a virtual drummer as the BEST "buddie" I can imagine. Thank from Spain!! You are really a great teacher and surely a nice guy to give us your time.
Thanks - I had so much fun following this. Loved your delivery and you were clear, logical and no showboating. You clearly know what a beginner is and genuinely want to help others to be creative. Top stuff. Abba and Floyd look out - here I come!
Charles. Fantastic video. Thank you. I am 69 years old and want to create songs from some of my poems. This is all very new to me but your explanation is slow, methodical and comprehensive. I have been learning the guitar for 6 years as part of my singer songwriting ambition. Now I am confident to start making my songs! You probably do not realize how much this help video means to your viewers. Thanks again. Steve
A long video, but well worth the length and full of great information and explanations! I went from knowing nothing to now feeling like I can jump right in and start making music. I have a full sized Clavinova digital piano that I just realized I can plug in to my computer. Thank you!!
At around 1:42:00, maybe a little earlier you remove a drum fill. You say you move this down to remove it, but it’s not clear what you move down to remove it. Helpful vid thanks
DAWSOME! I thought using a DAW was going to be really difficult. I was able to follow everything you so clearly explained, and now to experiment and finally produce something (actually ANYTHING). I've been collecting the equipment, instruments (flute, clarinet, several basses, mic, etc.), midi controllers (keyboards, EWI, pads, etc, etc. and more on the way [Artiphon I1 and a Orba]) for a few years and now it's finally time for me to make music. Thank you for this vid for beginners (I'm 69yo, so NOT a total beginner in music!).
As a trained keyboard musician, but knowing nothing about digital recording and having a Mac with GarageBand preinstalled, I was eager to know how I could use my musical skills to record and enhance my playing. Your video has opened up a new world to me, and you have taken the time to explain GB features so clearly. I can also hook up my keyboards via MIDI so I’m set to go! Many, many thanks for your help.
This is a great tutorial! A lot to learn, but you present it in a calm and patient manner. You’re a gifted teacher! Thanks for taking the time to try and teach us the basics of GB. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! Perfect for us beginners! 👍
This is a fab video which is incredibly helpful. I like the fact you present in a nice calm manner and haven't gone for the often used OTT style of tutorial. I'm only 15 minutes in and already know more about Garageband than I have learnt in 2 years of messing around with it! I think someone else said it but it really is exceptionally kind of you to have taken the time to make this video and for allowing people to watch it for free. A really huge thank you for that xxx
I searched through tutorials that did not meet may beginner needs. Your tutorial is exactly what a raw beginner requires. I have I watched the whole tutorial and now feel a lot more confident to attempt recording. Many Thanks Charles
Wow, cant thank you enough for posting this tutorial. As a complete NEWBIE always had in the back of my mind that I wanted to learn but intimidated by the complexity. The step by step instructions has made this so exciting and enjoyable. At 60 years of age finally discovered a hobby that interests me. I've been on the mac for 5 hours and can barely pull my self away . Thank you Thank you Thank you. Super Grateful.
love this whole video! really really really thank you for this video i was lookin for videos like this and it is finally there! also shoutout for you to do the whole timestamps, appreciate it! 🤍
Hey Charles, I came here from your other "Beginner" 10 minute video, it's great to see that you responded so perfectly to the feedback you received from those commenters. I haven't yet watched this through, but wanted to share my appreciation as a beginner looking for an in-depth overview in a single video, especially one that is time stamped!
i love this. im 14 and i'd really love to make music and sing as a career so hopefully this tutorial would help me expand my music beyond my piano lol.
I LOVE YOU for making this video. Thank you so much. A classically trained pianist, but never got to express myself musically. Buying a digital piano last year made me realise the possibilities with having a software instrument. This video is everything - thank you Charles!
You're a deeply good soul to have given the time to help people with this video. I've long wanted to seriously make music and this will help me move further in to that journey. Thank you! 🙏
I am impressed, if you really think about it, you will realize the work that is behind a perfectly prepared and didactic 2 hour video. Good job, you earned my like.
Thank you very much sir... Thank you for giving your valuable time to us... very nicely presented.... Even a beginner like me could understand it....God bless you.
I don’t know how much appreciate is enough for this video. It’s definitely great, go through details for a beginner and so much clear to understand. Well done man. You did a cool job. I was expecting automation tutorial but I haven’t watched your other GB tutorial videos. Anyway so much thanks again. ✋🏻👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻🙋🏻♂️
I’m 28 now and just got a MacBook. I play guitar and always wanted to learn how to produce music. I wish I had what I have now in high school. I never would have left my room. Thanks for taking the time to try and explain this software. It’s opened up some cool stuff for me
Thanks bro, my name is Graham and I am a songwriter lol, seeing my name on here blew my mind! Thanks for explaining the things that probably seem obvious to you, it’s very helpful for a musician with no experience in recording!
How come your Steinway Grand Piano sounds sooo soft and smooth? I tried to adjust it so it sounds just like yours a lot but for the life of me couldn't and settled for a modified Pop Key Producer, but, how did you do it so that the Steinway sounds so good, like seriously, that actually surprises me a lot. EDIT (for everyone else who might have the same problem): The Velocity seems to do the trick. While the Steinway Grand Piano sounds rather rough with its default settings, lowering the velocity gives it, no pun intended, a softer touch and removes the strain from playing the keys. Usually the velocity is 98, you can see this very good in the Musical Typing window (command K), and can change it there to a more moderate lower velocity. anything between 20 and 50 is a lot more pleasant to listen to, and this does a great deal of delight with other instruments, too.
You my wise friend are a hero. I was completely expecting to lose track of what you were saying because when I normally watch these type of vids they are quite complex in explaining and miss out a lot of the basic fundamentals, however you are fantastic at explaining what everything means while also keeping it some what simple and comprehensive. :)
I've spent a lot of time with GarageBand learning the basics of many controls. But I felt very limited at putting it all together so to speak, especially when it came to trying to add useful drum tracks. Your video provided many insights into areas I just hadn't dug into and I can see lots of new avenues for experimentation that will make my use of this software move to a more advanced stage. Well done.
This is the best instructional video that I have watched in years. I loved the titled index throughout to locate what you are looking for quickly. I am looking forward to watching the entire video.
Thank you for explaining this slowly and in detail. So many people who publish stuff on YT don’t know how to do this. I think you should make a film teaching folk how to make YT tutorials properly, because most of them haven’t got a clue!!
God love ya, Charles Cleyn! To combine artistry, knowledge and clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. You’re a natural born teacher and I appreciate you sharing your expertise!
Man, I'm truly grateful. I'm mostly familiar to a well amount of terms you use (theoretically), but I'm aware about all the patience it requires to explain every single aspect and component. Thanks a lot, because I've learned a lot during this class. Keep doing greatly, you're awesome. (Sorry I am not a native speaker, so it's kinda complicated expressing myself, but I needed to let you know). Subscribed.
In less than 2 hours, this FREE, clear, succinct, comprehensive, well-produced (love the zoom-ins/outs!), and practical tutorial showed me how to get GB up and running. An extraordinary gift from @CharlesCleyn, much appreciated (and subscribed for more). ¡Gracias!
Excellent beginners tutorial. Covers most important pieces for beginner to start with and avoiding to get lost in the woods of all possibillities. Thank you very much.
Thank you this was well elaborated, I followed your instructions through the entire video and applied almost everything you did. I appreciate your efforts man.
Brilliant! These long tutorials with chapters are like an encyclopaedia and you’re rocking it! You’re defining a new technique for RUclips usage and sharing your expertise in a professional delivery. I hope this generates strong revenues for you - it should 😃

Are you making music via this method yet?
As a trained keyboard musician, but knowing nothing about digital recording and having a Mac with GarageBand preinstalled, I was eager to know how I could use my musical skills to record and enhance my playing. Your video has opened up a new world to me, and you have taken the time to explain GB features so clearly. I can also hook up my keyboards via MIDI so I’m set to go! Many, many thanks for your help.
Fantastic! I went from total Garageband ignoramus to beginner in two hours. Thank you so much.
This is a great tutorial! A lot to learn, but you present it in a calm and patient manner. You’re a gifted teacher! Thanks for taking the time to try and teach us the basics of GB. Your efforts are greatly appreciated! Perfect for us beginners! 👍
Comprehensive tutorial, perfect for the beginner. Each detail well explained.
Thanks Mary :)
Really appreciate the effort you make to put these tutorials together. Very generous.
You’re very welcome.
I searched through tutorials that did not meet may beginner needs. Your tutorial is exactly what a raw beginner requires. I have I watched the whole tutorial and now feel a lot more confident to attempt recording. Many Thanks Charles
Thanks very much Richard. If you’re interested, I have a free pdf download in the description that will help you learn GarageBand faster.
As a GB beginner this video was immensely helpful. Thank you for putting together such a great tutorial!
You’re welcome Bryan!!
This is by far the best tutorial for Garage Band, thanks bro.
Finally a well planned professional tutorial. thanks Charles🙏
Thanks a lot Neilan!
This is golden!!! You sir, deserve a medal (or two)!
Best teacher ever!
Thanks Layla!!
Hey Charles, I came here from your other "Beginner" 10 minute video, it's great to see that you responded so perfectly to the feedback you received from those commenters.
I haven't yet watched this through, but wanted to share my appreciation as a beginner looking for an in-depth overview in a single video, especially one that is time stamped!
i love this. im 14 and i'd really love to make music and sing as a career so hopefully this tutorial would help me expand my music beyond my piano lol.
same, but different age 😁
Good luck!!
Amazing ! Such a clear, well-paced, comprehensive tutorial on Garageband like no other. Thank you for all of your kind efforts !!
My pleasure, I’m glad it’s helpful!
Excellent tutorial! I love your pacing here! I appreciate the time and thought you put into this. Thanks, Charles!
Thanks Alexandra :)
You're seriously a G for making this video, thank you!! ❤️
you're super welcome!
At last, someone who understands how to speak at a rate that encourages listening...wonderful, thankyou 😊
Thank you very much sir... Thank you for giving your valuable time to us... very nicely presented.... Even a beginner like me could understand it....God bless you.
You’re very welcome Nismy!!
Tysm since then I’ve been making some very good beats Ty.
Awesome channel. Very detailed explanations and on point. Keep up the good work Charles.
Thanks very much Richard. I appreciate the kind words!
From a complete novice many thanks Charles for the tuition, gives some real building blocks to help use Garageband
My pleasure, glad to get you started off right. Come back with any questions!
It’s opened up some cool stuff for me
This was fantastic - really clear and comprehensive without being overwhelming. Thanks so much!
I like that you explain EVERYTHING, icons, shortcuts, etc.
Very concise and helpful.
Hi, this is by far the best tutorial I have seen about this software. Keep up the good work
Very great work, you've made it very simple to understand.
Thanks Seth, I'm very happy that it was helpful to you.
Completed your 10 minute video now watching your full course it was so helpful the previous video! I am excited to learn from this video!
Very happy to hear that. I’m glad it’s helped.
You are a phenomenal teacher. I showed this to my 15 year old son, and he's now an expert. Thank you, Charles!
Thanks bro, my name is Graham and I am a songwriter lol, seeing my name on here blew my mind! Thanks for explaining the things that probably seem obvious to you, it’s very helpful for a musician with no experience in recording!
Awesome job, thank you!
Hi Martino! Thanks for watching.
One of the best tutorials hands down. I had my paper & pen out & learned a ton, much appreciated!!!

Thanks for coming back to answer your own comment! Glad you got it sorted.
I want to ask, who is the monster that disliked the video?
Perhaps Maugrim or the White Witch have a thing against Mr. Tumnus here!
It was I >:D jk
Oh, it's people that use instruments to make music.
I'm on RUclips since I was 12 and this is probably the most helpful video I've ever watched in my life. Thank you!!
1.25x gang, reporting!
Hey bro, if you have the focus, hit that 1.5
nahhhh, we goin 2x!
Well done.
great video, I'm the beginner with no friends to help me figure this out. so this step by step is clutch.
Happy to help
This is the best instructional video that I have watched in years. I loved the titled index throughout to locate what you are looking for quickly. I am looking forward to watching the entire video.
Thank you for explaining this slowly and in detail. So many people who publish stuff on YT don’t know how to do this. I think you should make a film teaching folk how to make YT tutorials properly, because most of them haven’t got a clue!!
Dude...this was such a great intro video for someone like me who has basically zero experience with GarageBand. Thank you so much.
God love ya, Charles Cleyn! To combine artistry, knowledge and clarity is a rare and wonderful thing. You’re a natural born teacher and I appreciate you sharing your expertise!
Thanks very much for such kind words, I really appreciate that.
Subscribed.
Thanks for the kind words Diego, hope I can help you on your journey!
This has been surely THE most helful introduction to GB that I have seen so far. Many thanks. You have won a subscriber.
Thanks so much Zalin. If you’re interested, I have a free pdf download in the description that will help you learn GarageBand faster.
30 minutes in! So far so good. This is excellent material
This is one of the best-detailed intro videos on any subject, period! Thank you, Charles! 🤩🤩🤩
Just finished this whole video. I've used GarageBand on and off for years and this was a great refresher. Thanks again!
Thank you this was well elaborated, I followed your instructions through the entire video and applied almost everything you did. I appreciate your efforts man.
This is exactly what I needed - I'm learning so much, thanks for helping out this total newbie!
You had me at "super beginner"... will watch this today. Thanks!
Brilliant! These long tutorials with chapters are like an encyclopaedia and you’re rocking it! You’re defining a new technique for RUclips usage and sharing your expertise in a professional delivery. I hope this generates strong revenues for you - it should 😃
Dude, this is amazing. I am not a GB newbie at all, however, I was asked to teach a course and watching your video showed exactly what I needed to structure and deliver the content in world-class fashion. New subscriber here! I wanna upgrade to Logic Pro and I'm pretty sure I found my teacher. Keep it up and peace out. Much love and respect from Mexico. GRACIAS HERMANO.
brilliant video thank you and especially for your patience
Very well explained! I have intuitively tried to use garage band for my karaoke creation, but this has now encouraged me to use other instruments to try our my own production. Can't thank you enough for explaining details so patiently - this is like social service or community service for all those trying out their music creation. Thank you!
And you even broke your own video down into sections!!! Bless you!!! Thanks!!!
Thanks Teela. If you’re interested, I have a free pdf download in the description that will help you learn GarageBand faster.
